Yahoo Messenger won't sign in Macbook (13" Black) v. 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)

Been having some really weird issues with Yahoo Messenger on my Macbook (13" Black) O/S Snow Leopard v 10.6.8.  My sign-in/log-in screen has been in this perpetual cycle of saying "signing -in" but nothing happens..  I have no other issues with other messenging apps (e.g iChat, AOL-IM, ICQ, etc) work just fine, but just non stop things with Yahoo.  Don't know if it ever worked on here, but now its becoming an issue because I'm starting an online class now and need to have this for discussion groups.   Any help would be great .. Thanks ! (BTW this screen shot has been goign on for about an hour)

The most random fix just happened for me, something I didn't think of trying.
At the Log-In Screen:
Click File --> Preferences --> Select the Connection option (I changed the toggle to 'Behind Firewall') .. Although, I'm not behind a fire wall or anything but just played around with the settings and it worked and now I'm able to log in .  strange.. very strange..

Connect the printer to your Wireless Network and use Bonjour to detect nd connect it.
That's wrong. AirPrint is not just for iOS devices. Since HP doesn't provide drivers for this printer, they say to use AirPrint:

Having a problem downloading previously downloaded Apps to iTune 11.0.2 on a MacBook with OS 10.6.8 with Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

The Mac App Store is for apps/programs for your Mac i.e. they are for Mac OS X - if you've bought/downloaded any apps from within that, and they are still in that store, then they should show in the Purchases tab within it.
The app store within iTunes is for apps for iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches i.e. they are iOS apps
If you want iPhoto for your Mac then the version within the Mac App Store is where you need to look - but the version that is in there needs OS X 10.7.5+, so that won't work with your version. You might be able to download it via this page (whether it will then install I don't know) : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1462

Try repairing permissions. My favorite way is with a utility called AppleJack. Info and download here. It's free. It only works when you boot in Single User Mode. When restarting or booting, hold down the Command key and S keys.
You will get a very different startup screen that looks like the Terminal app has hijacked the screen. Just let the lines of text scroll by. When that happens you will get a text entry prompt. Type in "AppleJack" without the quotation marks.
A DOS looking menu will appear. Choose 1 or d to run Disk Repair. If you get a message that Disk Repair found and corrected errors, run it again. Repeat until you get the "your disk appears to be ok" message. This rarely happens with my experience, though. This does the same thing as as booting from an external drive and running Disk Utility's repair. Only, no external drive is required!
Next, choose 2 or p to repair disk permissions. This will take a little while. AppleJack warns that it will take up to an half hour to run repair permissions. It'n never taken more than about ten minutes for my MacBook Pro.
As permissions are repaired, you will see each repair scroll on the screen. When done, the menu returns, choose q to quit. Then at the prompt, enter "exit" without the quotes. Your MacBook Pro should restart into Mac OS normally after this.
    Hope this helps.

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

I have a MacBook Pro with Intel Core Duo and Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Would like to upgrade to Lion but it requires a minimum of Intel Core 2 Duo. Can I get what I need or do I have to buy new MacBok Pro?

I also have a core duo MBP with Snow Leopard and it runs perfectly.  There are very few things it cannot do as compared to the faster, newer MBPs, but that is attributable to the CPU, not the OS.  There are some who view Lion as downgrade rather than as an improvement.  If there are important applications that reqire a fast CPU or Lion features that you find essential, by all means get a new MBP.
I have an aphorism:  Obsolescence is more often a perception rather than a reality.  Besides the silver keys look much classier than the black ones.

  • Cannot use program, not supported by architecture?  I have a MacBook running 10.5 and have a Snow Leopard upgrade disk to 10.6.3, and that is the error message that I keep getting as to why my update won't install.

I have a MacBook that I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard so that I may upgrade it then to Lion to make better use of my iPad and some of the n we tools that Apple has made available in Lion.  I have checked and double checked that my MacBook meets the hardware expectations, and it does exceed the ones for Snow Leopard.  however, every time that I try to run the install disk it tells me that the program is not supported by the current architecture.  I have even tried to backend the processes by opening the install folder with "View Package Contents" option, but it still gives the same error message!  Someone please help!

Obtain one of these Snow Leopard DVDs instead. They are not expensive.

  • Cloned HD running Snow Leopard won't boot in new MBP running Lion., cloned HD running Snow Leopard won't boot in new MBP running Lion.

Hi, I've seen a lot of discussion on this topic but nothing specific to my situation.  I have two macs, a personal mac (macbook running Snow Leopard vers. 10.6) and a newer work macbook pro (late 2011 running Lion vers. 10.7.5).  I want to use some of the applications at work (that is on the Macbook Pro) that are on my home macbook with Snow Leopard.  I cloned the entire HD of my Macbook onto an external drive.  The clone seems to have worked as I can use it as a boot disk for the macbook (from which it was cloned).  However, if I try to boot the MacBook Pro running Lion, with this same clone on the external drive it won't work.  I get a bit of text in the background and an overlay in dark grey saying (in several languages) restart the Mac by holding down the start key etc.  I don't know if this has to do with the kernel panic problem or the Lion restore disk business.  I don't see the point in trying to do an internal partition of the MacBook Pro hard drive and then add the cloned Snow Leopard, if I can't get the thing to boot externally as it is.
Does anyone have any fixes for what really should be a simple proceedure but is not?

Make sure the mac you are cloning from has the combo 10.6.8 update applied to it. The late 2011 models need at least 10.6.7 and better with 10.6.8. So if your older mac is running anything lower than 10.6.7 it will not boot on the 2011 model.

  • I am in the process of updating the os of my macbook pro and have installed from the snow leopard dvd and did the 10.6.8 combo v1.1 as well and wis to update further but i now cannot get preview so i am concerned about going forward. how to get prev

I am updating the OS on my MacBook Pro from 10.5.8.  I have installed 10.6.8 and the 10.6.8 combo v1.1.  I cannot open my older version of Preview and do not appear to have a newer version which i thought would be on the Snow Leopard dvd.  How can I get the correct version of Preview and is it advisable to upgrade to OS7 andOS8?

It is always installed with whatever new version of OS X is installed or appropriate updates. Since you plan to go forward your choice depends on your model. I would urge you to perform a clean install instead of continuing the upgrade path which may interject incompatibilities.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Yosemite, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Before attempting a clean install you want to first download the appropriate installer application from the App Store. It will download into your Applications folder. You need to make a copy of it in your Downloads folder so you can make a bootable USB flash drive:
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Make your own Yosemite flash drive installer using the Yosemite tool:
You can also create a Yosemite flash drive installer via the Terminal. Yosemite has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:

  • I need to upgrade my Macbook Pro from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. Will I lose any files on my drive if I do that?

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.4.11. I am trying to upgrade from that to Snow Leopard then to 10.7.5. I know that I have to do it in steps. My question ins this. I have a Snow Leopard disk that came with my Imac that I can use to upgrade my laptop. When I go through the process, it says something about using Timeline to restore. Am I going to lose all of my files? All I need is for the OS to be updated. Will it be safe to go through with it or will I lose all of my files on the drive. Any answers to this question are much appreciated.

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!
