Yamaha 01V MIDI Controller Map - Any interest?

Hello
The Yamaha 01V classic (i.e. not 01V96) is not supported directly under Logic Pro 8, however a passable workaround should be possible by:
1. Assigning an appropriate set of MIDI send messages to each control change in the 01V.
2. Developing an Automation Quick Access set in Logic to respond to these MIDI control changes.
Do you think it would be possible to make an Automation Quick Access which is generic and thereby would respond intelligently to track re-shuffles, track additions and similar? e.g. fader number one on the 01V would always control the volume of "sequencer track 1" rather than "audio channel 1".
The alternate solution if a generic set isn't available is to set up a template song with a track count requisite to song needs, but this is less than ideal because the number of channels/software instruments/buses etc usually varies between projects!
Would love to hear feedback from interested parties.
Carl

Automation Quick Access is for using one controller, like a mod wheel or slider, to control any current automation parameter.
There is no such thing as an "Automation Quick Access set". There is only one automation quick access parameter to learn.
What you want is to use the controller assignments window to create a set of custom controller assignments. Yes, you can handle bank offsets for faders and things like that. make sure you read the control surfaces manual and section, and understand what modes and zones are, and the available functionality in the controller assignments window.
Doing a "complete" (-ish) controller assignments set correctly implementing bank offsets, plugin parameters, mixes parameters, audio instrument parameters and so on is not trivial, and some of the more sophisticated functionality that you get with the Mackie Control such as feedback and other niceties you can't use wihout a custom programmed control surface module (which only Apple can make).
Also be aware that the controller assignments are vey buggy. Do it carefully, make lots of backups of your control surface prefs (these are only saved on exit of Logic) and take it slowly.
Good luck!

  • Midi controller doesnt work with ES2

    Hi
Im using my virus TI synth as a midi controller for my soft synths.
It works just fine with my NI instruments, the midi learn functions just fine with those,
but when i try midi learn with the ES2 i cant get the virus to control any of it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks
    digi

With the help of Bee Jay (much thanks), I figured this out. What you have to do is this
First, use the Virus TI graphic user interface to create a Remote Template. You can learn how to do this by going to pages 24-26 of the Virus Control Tutorial.pdf (read it carefully). I would suggest creating a new template titled "Logic".
In creating this template, you will need to create MIDI strings for each of the Virus' knobs (page 25-26 in the Virus Control Tutorial.pdf). I would suggest using some of the MIDI controller numbers for the ES1's parameters, which are listed on page 248 of the Logic Studio Instruments and Effects.pdf manual - if you do that, the ES1's knobs will respond to those Virus knobs for which you assigned the specific controller numbers listed for the ES1. Then you can create some more unique MIDI controller strings any extra (unassigned) Virus knobs. In any case, each of the Virus knobs has to be assigned to a unique MIDI Controller number.
After this is done, you can use Logic's Controller Assignments "learn" function to assign the virus to control the other Logic instruments. First, make sure your Virus is in Remote mode and your new "Logic" Remote Template is loaded, and open up a Logic instrument (e.g., the ES2). Now hit command-L. Logic's Controller Assignments window will appear, but you can just drag it off to the side for the moment. Now click on a knob on the ES2, then twiddle the knob you want to use on the Virus. Do that for as many knobs as you want, then deactivate the "Learn" button on the Controller Assignments window when you're done.
Then, whenever you want to control a Logic instrument which you've set up this way, you just need to put the Virus in Remote Mode and make sure you load the "Logic" Template.

  • Problem with Yamaha PSR-550 as MIDI controller

    Hi:
A friend lent me a Yamaha PSR-550 to use as a MIDI controller for Software Instruments, but I am having a few problems. My MIDI to USB interface is an M-Audio Uno 1x1. I have already used my Roland V-Accordion with no issues- it was plug and play. I assumed the same with the Yamaha and hooked it up but got no sound. Checking the 550's manual I saw that there were a few different templates for MIDI setup. The "Master Keyboard" looked right (using the keyboard strictly as a controller for MIDI data) but it gave me nothing. I tried the other templates too without success.
In GB help I read about Audio MIDI Setup, opened it, created a new device and connected the ins and outs but still got no sound from the keyboard and no indications in Test Setup. Then I downloaded a USB-MIDI driver for the Yamaha and installed that. Nothing. Reading some posts in the Discussions I swapped the MIDI in and out cables, although they specify "To MIDI In" &c. Still nothing. Finally I noticed that the M-Audio Uno is showing no activity coming from the keyboard. I tried all those templates again but am still seeing no signal from the 550. As an aside, I just noticed that when I click on the "New External Device" icon while in Test Setup mode the Out arrow from the Uno shows red and the Uno itself indicates that a signal is going out.
My question is whether I am doing something wrong in the PSR-550 setup, or if the MIDI out on the keyboard could possibly be bad. Thanks to everyone in advance for any help you can give me.

I am working without a net here (not at home where my Mac and Yamaha are), but I will TRY to lend some advice from my experience, and will try to confirm and clarify it tonight when I get home.
I go through the same problem every time I hook up my PSR-740 to my Mac. I too have a Uno 1x1. It usually takes some fiddling with all of the controls.
I seem to recall the main issue is within the Yamaha's setups and I don't know if the 550 has the same options as the 740. But, what I have to do is go into the MIDI Utility function on the 740 and make sure 2 functions are set a certain way - I believe one has to be External ('Control' function?) and the other may be 'Yes' to MIDI output?. Don't quote me on that yet and sorry for the vague answer. Hopefully I can set you straight later today.

I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop? My sound is running through the Saffire Pro 40 Interface (Focusrite) into external speakers with powered amps.
Also, When I record I am hearing little pops in the system. I have checked all of my meters and they are not clipping. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop?

The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?

This is what you have, correct?

    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

Req any examples of how to use a USB midi controller/keyboards with Labview TIA

    Hi,
To access the MIDI ports you will need to call the Windows SDK. To send MIDI commands is relatively easy, here is an example that shows you how to send data to a MIDI controller or keyboard.
As far as input goes, this is the hard part. There are a series of functions that you need to call to open up the device, set some buffers and and possibly a callback to get notifications on the incoming data.
Reading MIDI data will not be an easy task, your best bet will be to implement this in a DLL and call that DLL in LabVIEW, there should be some code available o the web.
= "http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/multimed/htm/_win32_multimedia_... is a link to the Windows multimedia functions that you could use for MIDI input.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

is there any iPhone midi controller that can control logic just by one usb line to the mac?
Free ones would be the best!
    Thanks!

If you have a Mac Pro and an iPhone, surely you can afford a router? It's about the same price a a decent meal for two.

Although not USB, there are a couple of iPhone/Touch apps that can control the Mac using a wireless network. MobileMouse (free & paid versions) do a great job, as well as Logitech's TouchMouse. Both will allow you to use the touch screen to control the mouse, which essentially gives you the ability to do many things in Logic. I've used them, for example, to begin a recording, which frees me from being near the computer.

  • Best USB-MIDI interface to connect Yamaha MFC10 foot controller to MacBook Air

    Hi guys,
I would like to buy a Yamaha MFC10 MIDI foot controller. It has a number of advantages over other foot controllers. For instance: you can connect up to four additional expression pedals to the foot controller, which is something I might need in the future, so it's better to invest in this product so I am prepared for the future.
The thing is, I want to connect this MIDI controller to a USB port on my MacBook Air. What is the best USB-MIDI interface to get in this situation?
I love to hear your thoughts on this.
    Cheers!
    Best regards,
    Theo

Did you set midi communications to USB? I think by default it may be set to the MIDI port on the back. You need USB.
    Press Utilities, then MIDI (F6).

  • Yamaha usb-midi setup.

    Hi all.
I'm trying to get my yamaha dgx-620 connected to my macbook pro. The usb cables are fine. but the mac simply won't recognize that an external device is plugged in. Garageband doesn't notice it, nor does the midi utility application. I've fiddled with the settings on the keyboard to see if there's something up with that, but to no avail.
This is odd because everything else I've plugged into the macbook is recognized immediately and works flawlessly. So obviously I'm inclined to think it's the keyboard. I'll be picking up a proper midi controller soon, but I would like to get this working in the meantime. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I have found from first hand experience that Casio and Yamaha keyboards will only interface with a MIDI in connection as a controller. USB/Yamaha/Apple are not words that normally work in the same sentence in my experience.
Yamaha wants you to use their midi drivers and they are not 100 compatible with Mac yet. That is why their make their own for a Mac, but like it has been said elsewhere in this discusion, go with what is working, M-Audio is a great example. I own the Keystation Pro 88 and it is an exceptional value for the $$. It won't satisfy a concert pianist but for those of us that are interested in creating music with a semblance of realism as we record, the KSP 88 is sweet.
I actually went to Guitar Center, took a G4 notebook along, fired up GB and started going through the whole store with what worked and what did not. M-Audio USB works fine with the updated drivers installed.
What I have not tried is the Yamaha MIDI/USB UX-16. I am currently using the MIDI-Uno by M-Audio on my Yamaha S80. It works fine as a controller, but since the voice generator onboard the S80 is not compatible with Mac, GB will not recognize the MIDI out to the Synth voices.
Too bad, because this would have really added to the options in GB.
You are doing a great thing to research and ask tons a questions. In a home recording studio, there are too many variables with gear and software. It is amazing that things work as well as they do!

  • How do I hook my Keyboard up to my computer to use it as a MIDI controller?

Ok, I'm new to MACS and new to LOGIC. I just installed logic and all of its components on my IMAC. OSX 10.6.3 Once I installed everything, I tried to hook up my electric piano to use it as a MIDI controller. Mind you, I am also completely new to MIDI. My Piano is a KORG sp-300. I used an Alesis Audio Link USB- MIDI cable to connect my keyboard directly to a usb port in my MAC. I hooked up the midi side of the connector to the midi in and out on my keyboard, and plugged in the usb side to the computer. I then went to the Audio Midi set up, and looked in the midi studio, and there was the USB2MIDI(which is associated with the Alesis cord, and not my Korg piano) and the IAC driver from MAC. I checked so that both are online, and didn't change any of the other settings. I did a test set up, but when I played notes on the keyboard nothing happened.
So now when I open Logic, or garage band for that matter, it doesn't recognize that I have a midi controller hooked up. When I look in midi preferences in garageband, it says that there are 2 midi devices detected. In logic it says that there is no input or output.
I read the manual for LOGIC and for my Korg, and I am lost. Korg says that it transmits on 1 channel, automatically set to channel 1 if not adjusted, and receives on 16. If I am correct, right now I am not interested in receiving, only transmitting.
At this point, I just want to select a software instrument in Logic, play my Korg, and see notes(or MIDI data) appear in the arrange area. I don't know what's going on, but again, I am completely lost.
Could someone please help me here? Am I missing an obvious step? Like I said, I am new to all of this, so please let me know if you have any idea how to get my midi controller to work. It says in the Korg manual that it can be used as a controller, or a multitimbral tone generator. And I did switch the Local Off.
By the way, who would be best to call to solve this issue. MAC? Sweetwater(where I bought the Alesis cord, and Logic)? Or Korg?
Please let me know if you have any helpful advice.
    Thanks,
    Tristan

  • USB MIDI controller no longer recognized by mac (not even in System Information).

    Hello!
I have an M-Audio Keystation 49e that I have been using with my MBP (early 2008 model) for a few years with absolutely zero problems ever. I recently bought a very generic Chinese MIDI interface ("Sanoxy" brand) to go between my full-size Yamaha and mac so that performances of parts into logic would be on weighted keys and such.
For a while I used both the MIDI interface with the Yamaha and the little 49-key MIDI controller (via USB and also powered by the USB) with no problems. I believe this problem occurred when I tried to use both the MIDI interface and MIDI controller on one USB port using a Targus external number pad (unpowered) that has two USB ports on it (bad idea I'm sure). I did this because my MBP only has two USB ports on it and I was using the other for my audio interface.
I have reset PRAM more than a couple times, reset SMC, cleaned caches (even though this could be done more thouroughly maybe with a recommended program besides Cocktail - trial is expired), even replaced AppleMIDIUSBDriver.plugin from my parents iMac which the MIDI controller still works on. All this and nothing. The keyboard is not recognized as even being plugged into the USB port on System Information even though the lights are on, much less AMS.
Any other information you need I'd be happy to let you know.
    Super thanks!

  • Onscreen piano keys stuck when using midi controller

    Hi,
I am using a Yamaha PSR-172 as my midi controller. I use SoundTech's Lightsnake as my midi-usb connector. It is supposed to power the Yamaha keyboard from the usb, but it doesn't; I still need to use the yamaha power adaptor. Anyway, my onscreen keyboard displays the notes I play on the Yamaha; they colour as I play them via the controller. Sometimes they continue to make sound after I have released them, and the onscreen keys stay coloured. The sound continues until I change instruments or close garageband. There is no problem with the Yamaha PSR-172 when I use it as a stand alone instrument. Any explanation or suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

No, I'm not using a sustain pedal. I'm using the Microkorg and the keys are pretty horrible (sticky and aren't that responsive), could it be this that's causing the notes to sustain indefinitely (until I press the key of the note that won't stop ringing)?
Yes, it could be that no note off (or similar/equivalent message) is being sent. You should watch your MIDI in/out on the right side of the display in the transport bar and assert if any message is being sent when you release the key. It could be that when you strike it a second time that the note off message is being sent, especially if the electrical contacts are dirty.
A new keyboard will probably solve that, yes. Unless it also has dirty contacts.

  • What to buy? I want to use my Technics KN-5000 as the MIDI controller.

    Hi,
I tried searching for similar threads but couldn't find something that close to my particular situation. I'm completely new to Logic and computer MIDI in general, at the moment I have...
    Technics KN-5000
    iMac 24"
From what I've read and heard I am planning to buy...
    Logic Studio
    a USB-MIDI converter cable
    My main questions are:
Is this all I need to get started with Logic?
Are there any disadvantages to using an older keyboard as opposed to a new purpose-built MIDI controller?
Will I only be able to use the software instruments from Logic, or will I be able to use the instruments from the KN-5000?
Will I be able to map any controls from the KN5000 to Logic functions (sliders, etc.)?
When capturing MIDI will Logic capture the full range of features from the KN5000 (sustain pedal, etc.)?
Is there anything else I should consider buying?
I appreciate that I've given a whole load of questions, if anyone can answere any of the questions it'd me much appreciated. Also, I can only apologise for being an annoying noob!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Welcome to the forum!
    1. To get starting with Logic Yes!
you don't say how much ram you've got
    but it is advisable 2GB.
    2. Nope.
    3. You can use both, but after listen the sounds you have in Logic
    I don't think you'll use the KN's.
    4.Problably Yes.
    5. Yes!
    6. An audio interface if you plan to record audio,
Monitors (speakers) I believe it's a must, I don't believe you get satisfaction from
    iMac speakers...
Well, next time try to post only one question, I'm getting dizzy... ;o)
    Peace,

  • Yamaha 01v vs. apogee rosetta 800?

does anybody have an opinion about the best converter between the yamaha 01v 96 and the apogee rosetta 800?

I will say I have done a recording on the DM2000 and would like to say Yamaha is better than I expected, commenting on how some people don't like companies that make several different areas of products.
I used to be skeptical about Yamaha too, but I have learned to respect them a lot more. A friend of mine owned a higher model Ibanez guitar and then started playing on a mid-range Yamaha. He chose the Yamaha over the Ibanez in the end. I'm not saying Ibanez is amazing, but they are obviously respectable in the guitar manufacturing area whereas Yamaha only recently in the past 5 years or so have started to really show an interest.
On the note of respectable users who use Yamaha. Don Davis uses the O2R96s in his studio. He did the scoring for the Matrix Trilogy.
On the note of converters, my opinion and guess is that the Rosetta 800 will sound better converter wise since it's a dedicated unit rather than the all encompassing 01V96. But then again, I have heard some people saying that they a MOTU's 828 converters over the Rosetta 800.
On the note of this not being a posting for Logic Pro, I would highly suggest going to www.gearslutz.com That is an amazing forum for your needs. I would assume better than what we can offer, but who knows.
