Yamaha CVP-98 & Garageband...HELP!!

OK, Here's the deal...
I'm trying to connect a Yamaha Clavinova CVP-98 through Audiotrak's XP MIDI Mate to my Intel Mac Mini so that I can record in Garageband.
When I connect the MIDI Mate, Garageband recognizes it and says that "A Change in the number of MIDI Inputs" has occurred. That sounded great to me until I tried to press record on a "software track" for a grand piano. Garageband never recorded anything, and I don't know if the piano is really getting through to the computer. I've worked with various settings for about 5 hours to no sucess, and I decided that if everyone here couldn't find a solution, then it probably didn't exist.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I've tried plugging the in to the out on the Clavinova and vice versa as some had originally instructed but to no success.
Any help would be appreciated....

I posted this in the wrong forum..I meant to post in Garageband 08.... sorry guys..

  • Using Yamaha Keyboard with GarageBand

Tried my Yamaha keyboard with GarageBand for the first time. To my amazement, it worked. However:
Cant' seem to get the volume up (on the Yamaha Keyboard). Checked all the volume settings, including the iMac's System Preferences, GarageBand volume settings but it's still relatively "soft."
I'm using a USB 2.0 15-ft. cable. Could the length of the cable have anything to do with this. Would a shorter USB 2.0 cable.........say 4-ft. ...... make a difference?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions

don't think I have some of the features to control
sound you suggest. (GB's Track Fader? Master Volume
    Fader? "Generator" settings. "Pencil" icon.)
You have all these things. Each track has a fader (volume control), and at the bottom right of the window is the Master Fader (volume Control). Select a track and open Track Info ("i"nfo) icon), click details, and the pencil icon to the right of the Generator PopUp menu.
preferences, it does not show that USB port as a line
    in......
Because it is NOT a line in. MIDI ≠ Audio.
just internal mic and audio line in
    As it should be.
I don't understand why, when going to the audio
settings........both on Mac audio preferences and
GarageBand..........it doesn't show that USB as an
    audio line in.
    Because MIDI ≠ Audio
Also tried with Sound Studio...........a music
recording application that came with my iMac when I
purchased it a couple of years ago. It has worked
with the Mac's audio line in and with the internal
mic.........but doesn't pick up anything from the
    keyboard via USB cable in.
Because there is no Audio to pick up. MIDI ≠ Audio.
Could the length of my USB cable have anything to do
with this? I am using a 15-ft. USB 2.0 cable.
    No.

  • Yamaha PSR-172 & Garageband '08 - Help!

    I have a Yamaha PSR-172 keyboard and a MacBook with GarageBand '08.
Can anyone tell me the simplest, layman's term method of connecting my keyboard to my MacBook such that it will work in GarageBand?
I know that I don't have the right cables because I have nothing I can put in the MIDI in or out jacks. If anyone could tell me what I need to get to make it work, it would be extremely helpful!
    Thanks :o)

My PSR 270 loves the Yamaha UX-16 Interface. Got mine for $26 off Ebay - works beautifully

  • Yamaha Dgx 220 iPad help

    Hello everyone,
Last week after graduation, my aunt gave me the new iPad, which I love very much. I am currently using it to work on a movie project for a scholarship, and I'm using GarageBand for the audio. I wanted to use my Yamaha DGX 220 to record the instrumental. I first tried to record but as you may have guessed it turned out very badly. I then tried to use the Apple camera connection kit to connect the Yamaha keyboard to my iPad. Unfortunately I received the message that this USB device is not supported. I tried to look online for a solution but I could not find one for the iPad. For macs, it was suggested that an intermediary box of some kind be used. Would this work for the iPad? I would hate to go out and buy unnecessary hardware.
Thank you all in advance for your help,
    -M65

is it a DGX-220 or PSR-220? My PSR has an OUTPUT on the back (to run to an amp) - simply run a standard guitar type cable (1/4" jacks) from the OUTPUT on your keyboard into your Mac's LINE IN (using a cheap Radio Shack 1/4" -> 1/8" mini adapter) and you can use the built-in sounds this way... Set it up as a REAL INSTRUMENT. Be sure to turn MONITOR on so you can hear yourself

  • GarageBand Help and User Manual

The GarageBand User Manual and Help seem to do a fairly good job of explaining what can be done and how to do various things with GarageBand. However, for someone such as myself who is just beginning to learn how to use GarageBand, neither the User Manual or the Help explain the various features - what they are, what they are used for, when or why you would want to use such a feature. I'm specifically interested in such features as "AUTO WAH", "AU BAND PASS", "AU DYNAMIC PROCESSOR", "AU HIGH SHELF FILTER", "AU PARAMETRIC EQ", etc. Can anyone recommend a good book that would explain the meaning and purpose of these features, and when or why they would be used when editing audio / music tracks? Thanks!

Before you look for a book, I'd suggest doing some web searches. Drop the "AU" part (AU stands for Audio Units and is simply the 'type' of plug in that GB uses) and search for "band pass" and "parametric EQ", etc. You'll likely find more information then you could read in a life time.
For the "When/why", for the most part that is subjective. You use an effect when the song you're creating requires it, either as an effect to add a little flair to something, or as a way to make a recording sound better. Once you learn what an effect does (and BTW, playing with effects at their min and max settings can tell you a LOT about what they do), you let your ears tell you if and when to use one.

  • Desperate Garageband Help!!

    Alright,
I have posted many times concerning my garageband problem. Plain and simple I had garageband. It worked. I got an MBOX and pro tools. All the sudden GB and my Audio MIDI setup utility stopped working. Here are links to my previous posts
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1223980&tstart=0
I got leopard hoping it would help. It didn't. When I try to open GB, it bounces on the dock and nothing happens. I posted this problem on the digidesign board. I was told that since Pro Tools doesn't work with leopard I should just uninstall Pro Tools and everything should be cool. I did that and my Audio MIDI setup works fine but Garageband still wont open or work. Please I need help. Should I try and get a new iLife? Can I do some type of GB uninstall?

  • Yamaha CVp-509 Voices

I am trying to import my digital pianos voices to garageband. I can use it as a midi keyboard but I only get garage bands voices it will not import any sounds from my digital piano. It is hooked up with a usb host cable. How do you do this. Thanks in advance. Also would logic 9.0 be able to do this ?

You can't, unless you find some software out there which can access Yamaha's proprietary format for storing sampler instruments and turn it into the kind of file that GB can work with. I doubt that something like this exists.
There is a plugin called MidiO that you can use to send the midi information of a track out to your keyboard. That way, it would play the keyboard's sound. Of course, that's only for playback, a mixdown of the song wouldn't contain these sounds.

  • No recording signal on new Garageband - Help!

    Hi there - prob being stupid but need help? I recently got a new iMac with the latest Garageband on - used to be able to poodle away without probs on my old 2007 version but I am struggling. I don't seem to be able to get a recording signal despite the track to which I am recording seemingly being 'armed'. Here's what I am doing;
    1. Creating a new track
    2. Selecting the guitar
    3. Connecting the guitar via an Apogee One interface.
    4. Guitar seems to register against track but with little input volume? I've checked and double checked things are turned up and also tried with manual and auto recording level.
    5. I arm track - when I start the track is clearly recording but it's not picking up the signal from the guitar and I just can't understand what I am doing wrong?
    6. Have tried other guitars - still the same.
    7. Also, despite clicking the monitor button I am not getting anything.
Totally exasperated so if anyone can gfive me some idiotproof guidance I'd be mighty grateful?
    Thanks

why did it work OK last week when the lock was in place?
When the enclosure lock is locked, the server will only recognize devices that are attached at boot time. It won't recognize any device plugged in after the server has booted.
Is is possible that the devices that were working last week were attached at boot time?

  • Left and right channel panning for drummer backing tracks in Garageband - HELP

    Hi there
OK, so I've finished my song on garageband that I've recorded with a USB keyboard with many STEREO keyboard parts and a click track.
I need to be able to mix down to the following specification for my drummer.
Left Channel - Mono keyboard sounds (to goto PA)
Right Channel - Same Mono keyboard sounds plus click track (to be heard through headphones)
So basically the keyboard will be the same mono track at the same volume playing through both the left and right. I cant simply put the stereo keyboard sound in the centre as that would mean the drummer would get SOME parts of the keyboards stereo fields and the PA would get the other parts of the stereo field so it wouldnt sound right.
Any ideas how to do this?
I hope I've explained myself OK

I need to be able to mix down to the following specification for my drummer.
Left Channel - Mono keyboard sounds (to goto PA)
Right Channel - Same Mono keyboard sounds plus click track (to be heard through headphones)
Here are instructions on how to split a stereo track into mono tracks:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/StereoToMono.html
On top of this, you will want to re-import the mono keyboard track back into Garageband, duplicate it onto a 2nd mono track,  then add the click track (on a separate 3rd mono track of course).  Then pan one mono keyboard track hard left, and pan the other mono keyboard track hard right and the click track hard right as well.  Export as normal and everything should be good.

  • Will updating to the latest GarageBand help with RAM issues?

Without fail, whenever one of my GarageBand projects exceeeds 4GB in filesize, I get the "Project cannot be played - too many instruments" error. I proceed to lock every track and delete every unused track. It makes zero difference and I can only play the project 5 seconds at a time.
Anyway, I am using the 2008 edition of GB. If I upgraded, would it make any difference? I have 4GB of RAM and the latest ver. of Logic can open the aforementioned GB file no problem.

I'm not sure of the answer, but if you're using the latest version of Logic, my inclination would be to upgrade to the latest version of GB. It's not expensive, it might actually solve your problem, and the worst that could happen is you have the latest version of GB.

  • Using Xbox Mad Catz Drum kit as drum controller for Garageband - Help!

Trying to get Snow leopard to recognise the mad catz portable drum kit - once it is recognised as a midi file i can then use it to play garageband drums!
Read online of a 2 stage solution to use a mapping programme and keyboard typing, the problem is i can't get the mac to recognise the USB controller.
In Sysprefs/usb it gives the name and id, but the '360 controller' converter is installed but nothing shows up in the available controller field, probably because the plist file (system/library/extensions)doesn't include it.
So i tried duplicating a device entry in the list with the right name and id - but still nada.
The controller lights for a second on plugging in and then nothing.
In "about this mac/usb" it says
    +Mad Catz Portable Drum Kit:+
    +Product ID: 0x9871+
    +Vendor ID: 0x0738+
    +Version: 4.10+
    +Serial Number: 0B97EB42+

    +Location ID: 0xfd313000+
    +Current Available (mA): 100+
+Current Required (mA): Unknown (Device has not been configured)+
So i tried adding the following to the plist:

    Any ideas?
I want to be able to play drums with this thing by various midi mapping, but am stuck. Any ideas?
(yes i know i could buy a set of midi drums for £200, but aren't you tempted by a £10 solution that stacks away in a little box?)

Have you found a solution to this?
It would be awesome to link my madcatz portable drum to my mac!

  • Garageband help please?!

I am recording voice tracks only (using "Basic Track" and "No effects" settings ) and then sending them to Itunes to convert to an MP3. I am using a snowball microphone, using mono 1 as the recording setting (not stereo) and the recording is set at a level of 100%. After I record and then send the track to itunes, three things occur:
    1. There is a high pitched whine in the audio. (I am in a booth with the microphone only and my laptop is outside of the booth)
    2. There is a "swishy" affect in the audio. Almost as if the two channels are out of sync or something is happening when the audio gets converted to mp3.
    3. The file ends up converting as stereo even though it was recorded as mono.
Is there anyone with experience recording voice in garageband out there that can assist?

Thank you so much for the reply, that was what I thought too, but nothing is soloed or muted. The tracks are there, they just won't play. I have gone as far as creating a brand new project and copy and pasting each track, and I think there are about 15 and it worked. I got the mix I wanted and the play head was white, to yellow/red, so I locked the tracks as the Garageband book said and that made the playhead white again. It worked great and was 100% done. I saved the file and played it and it worked fine. I closed it to work on another song and re-opened it later and again same problem and it would only play the bass drum, lead vocal and 2 harmony cocal tracks. Any other suggestions?
