Yamaha Promix 01 & logic 8

Hi
Ok i'm thinking about getting my hands on a Yamaha Promix 01
Does anyone know if this can be set up via midi with Logic 8
I know it wont be a case of plug n play & i'll probably have to tinker with the settings learn controller ETC thats not a problem
I just need to know it is possible
it must be easier than setting up an 02R v1 or is it ?
Thanx

Wow, a Pro Mix 01.... I used to use one of these in a live setup years ago (with Logic 2). I remember building my own elaborate environment that controlled everything in a live band scenario. It was awesome at the time... running it with a MOTU midi express and my faithful Powerbook 520, with expanded 20 meg of RAM and 160 meg HD.
Had all the vocals and their effects all midi controlled and set up from Logic. This is before laptops could really do the audio thing.
I'd sure do it different now if I were doin' the gig thing.

  • Connect my Yamaha MOX8 to Logic.

I've been having the most trouble trying to connect my Yamaha MOX8 to Logic. Would someone please kindly explain to me how?

Pac Center. I have a good one for you. I think I'm dealing with the same issue but I hopefully I can explain it better.
I have a Motif 8, Motu Traveler, and a Macbook Pro running the newest OS. I want to be able to use my Motif inside of Logic 9, fully. I can use it now, but I have to have Local Control in the Motif set to "ON." And I have to print audio as I go. I know that I need to have it set to OFF, but if I set it to OFF then no sound comes through. I have an enviroment just for the Motif that I downloaded a while back, and I was able to change my patches within Logic, up until a few days ago. I'm not sure what happened.
The Motif 8 is going through input 5-6 in the Motu Traveler.
If you can provide some insight that would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mapping Yamaha DTXplorer in logic pro - Environment window clicks and Ports

The midi signals for Yamaha DTXplorer are off from GM. The snare (G0) and bass drum (A0) output notes do not trigger snare (D1) and bass drum (C1).
I am a novice to both MAC and Logic Pro.
I have the midi out of the drumset going USB right into my MAC.
    I've gotten as far as...
    1. Environment window>clicks and Ports
    2. Verifying the channels that DTX triggers for snare and bass drum.
    3. Changing the output notes to D1 & C1.
    Nothing changes with the sound.
In fact, I can change the output notes for drums that are set up correctly and they don't change either.
None of the alterations I do in the Environment window seem to do anything to the midi signals!
Do I need to activate or save the changes? If so, how (precisely)?
    Thanks in advance.

    You can do that from within the app, under menu Logic Pro X;

  • Yamaha Clavinova to Logic Studio... can it be pure n simple?

I play a Yamaha Clavinova CV409 - which is great for spontaneously writing tunes.
I am running a MBP with Logic Studio (pre-latest), but I am not so familiar with this app yet.
Yes, I can hook them up via USB and get them crudely talking to each other. So what's my beef?
Well.... after writing a tune on the Clav, it would be nice to be able to import this with full integrity into Logic Studio, edit in the same channel format etc. and play it back seamlessly on the Clav, with no messing around.
The important bit is to change something on Logic and then export it back to the Clav and get it to play faithfully as though it had never left the Clav....
Has anyone out there had a similar challenge trying to keep life simple? Can't be too hard I presume...
As always, a few tips can save hours of time and frustration. So thanks in advance!

Hey Pete - Have you made any progress yet?
I've done some more experimenting.. And it's getting better..
I can now record Tyros performance into Logic - and then play the song from Logic back to Tyros, with out using Tyros sequencer. I recorded Tyros song (created there first) into synced Logic. Make sure the instrument track you are recording into does not echo back to your Yamaha. I just recorded it into a muted EVP electric piano.
Next create your 16 external midi instruments. Then use Spit/de-mix command by channel (under region). This will give you 16 midi tracks. Some may not have any information in them other than an 'initiate' command consisting of setting release and sustain time.
You may end up with MIDI channel one containing note data and sys-ex commands. The sys-ex commands in my event list are notated as going to channel 67. I believe sys-ex is meant to go to the device so the channel it is on, is not really relevent. I seperated this from midi channel 1 (which had part of my right hand playing). And I put it on a Tyros midi channel ALL.
Normally when you play an arranger keyboard, you are constantly changing registrations, pushing buttons, changing volumes, etc. Individual midi channels are receiving new program patches, you switch between variations, so that the individual parts alter, to create more interest etc.
Then I experimented with playing, along with all 16 midi tracks and muting it. The sys-ex track spits out quite a bit of data. When the sysex data is muted, song still plays pretty well. When I muted sys-ex track. Song still played except Intro/Variation/Ending sections didn't change.
So I deduce that all this sys-ex data is mainly driving the song section of Tyros. When you change from Intro/Var/Ending. Tyros then puts out program changes, volume, filter, controller data. But that is output to the desired MIDI channel and recorded into that particular midi track.. From then on it is on individual MIDI channel, and it doesn't matter that song sections change.
Normally when you play an arranger keyboard, the instrument itself scans the left hand keyboard and figures out what chords you wish to use.. The Tyros (and clavinola I suspect too) has seven different fingering systems. I am currently playing with "AI Fingering". This is a type of shorthand so you don't have to use full conventional chords as a normal keyboard player does. This frees your left hand up for hitting various registrations, and buttons on keyboard while playing.
So in short muting the sys-ex channel, really didn't make much difference in playback other than Tyros front panel changing lit buttons.
There are several issues of individual tracks, not selecting designated program changes, whether or not sys-ex track is playing.. The Tyros has what's called 'Multi Pad Control'. These are four buttons that you can assigning a instrument and a small performance. These might be some percussion parts, harp arpeggios, acoustic guitar finger picking etc. Most of these will derive their notes, from the left hand chords you play.
While you are working on Tyros sequencer these are refered to as 'multi pad' track. It is one track with 4 different pads. Once song is recorded into Tyros sequencer, they come up as MIDI channels 5 - 8. Likewise when recording in Tyros, you have a "style" part which consists of two drum rhythm tracks, a bass part, two chord tracks (either guitarlike, or keyboard), a pad track (strings, choir) and two phrase tracks (horn riffs, guitar riffs). This style is what gives the arranger KBD it's power. These tracks are generated according to what your left hand is holding down. When these are generated they end up being recorded on MIDI tracks 9- 16.
Once they are in the Tyros sequencer they are now longer a style, but part of the song. In the Tyros
you start with 16 channels, 9 - 16 I described above. 1 - 8 are song, style, mpad, mic, left hand, and Right 1,2,3. Once you record a song these parts are then output MIDI channels 1 - 16 like a tradional DAW. I am not sure if Clavinola works in same manner - I would suspect it does.
Once I recorded Tyros performance into Logic and split by midi channel, I could display it in the score. This gives you a great overview into what the Keyboard is really doing. I could look at event list make subtle changes, fix some bum notes I hit. You can edit these in Tyros event list, but it is cumbersome to say the least. I could adjust volumes, filter brightness, etc.. You can see everything Tyros is doing from the event.. Quite impressive.
Program changes are still puzzling me. Tyros uses MSB/LSB and Program change to call up voices. I need to find a data list of Yamaha's MSB/LSB to figure out the exact program in each bank. On the Logic event list program 80 will be a 'square wave' but once you are in a different bank, of course it ISN'T, but it is still described as that.
There is a online data list PDF manual, that lists the banks, with programs, but I don't see a relationship between the MSB/LSB bank number that Yamaha uses and the MSB/LSB numbers in Logic's event list for a particular instrument. They don't co-incide. There is also an issue, that some data gets sent on same clock count.
    event time 1.1.1. MSB, PRG
    event time 1.1.2 LSB
It is my understanding that MSB and LSB must be sent BEFORE PRG, otherwise you get wrong voice. I'm not sure why, (PPQ differences between Tyros and Logic seq) but you need to go manually in, and move the PRG event to be AFTER the LSB event.
So once we figure out the scheme that Yamaha uses for MSB/LSB banks, we should be able to duplicate Logic's performance to sound the exact same as the Tyros. This aspect is over my head, I haven't been able to figure it out.
(HINT - Erick any one else with more tech experience - perhaps you could glance at this and make sense of Yamaha's MSB/LSB and Logic's MSB/LSB. This is the link to Tyros data list. Mike you'll have to find Clavinola's data list, but I'm sure interpretation would be the same for both instruments even if banks of data are different (I'm sure they would be too)
    http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/emi/english/port/tyros3en_dlv10c.pdf
Another issue I noticed is. Some of the performances in Tyros sound great. When you export the individual tracks to Logic and play from there it is not the same.. Tyros has filters and effects on individual tracks. and an overall compressor. EQ. Of course pulling each track individually alters how the compressor is going to react. So Tyros playing up too 16 tracks live sounds better than when you export each one individually.
Much as I love being a control freak, I'm tempted to record the Tyros "live two track" because most of the time is sounds so good. Getting the individual tracks into Logic and tweaking them, (little less filter here for one section, more volume there etc) would be the best of both worlds. And if there was a need to remix the song later. You could call up the file and quickly make a change.

  • Started using a Yamaha n12 with Logic... having problems!!

    Hi Guys
Just wondering if anyone is using a Yamaha n12?
I've just bought one to replace (tentitively!) my Mackie Onyx 1220...
First thing I noticed was that the n12 wasn't "plug and play" the way the Mackie Onyx was. It didn't show up in the "sound" control panel until I loaded a special application called "M-Lan connection manager"...
... that kind of freaked me out - one more driver to go wrong, or to have future compatibility issues!
Anyway, it seems to be working OK, although a few "error 36s" have come up while playing from a random point in a song in Logic.
But the main problem I am having is that Logic is not receiving or sending ANY MIDI over my old M-Audio Midisport 4x4 while the Yamaha n12 is running. I still need to use the Midisport 'cos I have several MIDI devices (the n12 only has one MIDI in and one out).
Has anyone had similar experiences to this? Is there a way to keep using my Midisport alongside the n12? (When I switch back to the Mackie Onyx to test, everything is fine...)
On this whole subject, I would LOVE some feedback from anyone using an n12. Is it a bit unstable? Is having to use this "connection manager" thing annoying?
I am already finding it quite irritating that the n12 isn't usually recognized when I start the Mac, and I have to cycle it on and off to get it to show up....
Perhaps the Onyx is a better way to go after all, even though it's a bit simpler?
Thanks heaps guys - look forward to any words of wisdom you have to offer!
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Guys,
If you're using a Yamaha n12, there is a new version of the firmware (1.03), and the firwire firmware (1.0.7).
More importantly, Yamaha have released new drivers, called "Yamaha Steinberg FW drivers"...
Not only do these solve the problem of the n12 being recognized (and the issue of blocking other MIDI interfaces), they allow AMAZINGLY low latency. Projects which I had to run with a buffer of 128 on my Mackie Onyx will now run at a buffer of 32, with no glitches!
Very impressed with the n12 now I have the new drivers and firmware!
I definitely recommend that other n12 users update these if you haven't already!
    Cheers,
    Mike

  • How do i set up my yamaha dtxploxer on logic pro 9?

    Hi Apple Community,
I have an electronic drum kit - yamaha dtxplorer. I'm having an issue setting it up on logic so that I can record a jam in real-time as either an audio or midi file. I don't believe it's an issue with my audio interface (lexicon U22). I think it's because I need to program logic.
I do get a sound when I plug the kit in via the inteface, but, for e.g, if I hit the low tom it doesn't make a low tom sound, it makes the sound of a crash cymbal, and when I press the foot pedal it doesn't make any sound!!
If anybody has any suggestions I'd be most grateful.
    Cheers
    Wadders

I don't think you will need other software.
I looked at the DTX drum assignments in the manual, it's very close if not exactly set to the GM standard.
    Here they are.
     Input Instrument Note Number
    1 Snare 31
    1 Snare-open rim 34
    1 Snare-close rim 37
    2 Hi tom 48
    3 Mid tom 47
    4 Low tom 43
    5 Ride 51
    5 Ride edge 52
    6 Crash 49
    6 Crash edge 57
    7 HI-Hat open 46
    7 HI-Hat close 42
    7 HI-Hat foot close 44
    7 HI-Hat foot splash 85
    8 Kick 33
    9 Option 55
The suggestion at the Apple store was a good one, the Garageband drumset will probably be closest to General MIDI. All you really need is a drumset to match your note output. Be sure to set the track you're using to MIDI channel 10.
One other suggestion I might make is to use the "transposition" feature in the inspector, you may be able to transpose a drumset to match your note output.

  • Help with controlling Bank changes on Yamaha S90ES from Logic

Can anyone please help me with getting Logic to control the bank changes on this beast. I have it controlling the patch changes no problem it is just the bank changes I need thanx

Yeah, I'm a bit confused too. Assuming your keyboard is sending bank/program changes in the same format is receiving them, Logic will just record your data, and play it back as the keyboard sent it.
Logic is ignoring bank changes sent from my Korg Triton.
So, when recording into a region, you only get program changes, and not bank changes in your recorded data?
However, Logic is sending bank changes to the Triton perfectly.
From playing back a sequence recorded from program changes generated by the keyboard, or using Logic's bank/program change parameters in the instrument parameters?
If I use my keyboard to set the instrument, Logic sets the program,
    but the bank is ignored.
I don't understand what you mean by "Logic sets the program".
n the event list, the incoming data looks as standard as could be:
my keyboard is sending a bank MSB and LSB, via events 0 and 32,
    followed by a program change,
And you are saying that if you play that back, the keyboard doesn't change sounds correctly?
followed by a sysex "66/48" which I assume identifies the source
    of the message (the Korg).
You can't assume anything - it could be anything. It could be a sysex patch dump of the patch, or it could be some mode setting. You'd need to read the keyboard manual to find out what it is.
So the question is: how do I get Logic to PAY ATTENTION to the
darn bank change being sent by my keyboard?
I really don't understand what you mean by "PAY ATTENTION". If you squirt MIDI data at Logic, Logic will record it into a region, and then play it back, as would all sequencers. What should Logic do differently?

  • Yamaha promix 01 code/driver?

My church has recently been given a digital sound board (for mixing audio from multiple sources).
The manual shows a number of standard MIDI commands as well as custom commands to address settings unique to this board.
I have searched and searched but so far I have not found any Labview code/drivers for this sound board.   There doesn't seem to be much MIDI control written for Labview at all.
I am guessing that any code that is out there is MAC specific and I don't have access to a MAC version of Labview.  Anybody have any ideas about how to get started talking to a MIDI music device with Labview on a PC?
I have a fair amount of experience writting complex Labview code so if I can't find any code available I will eventually build some drivers but it will take a few months to find the time to do it.

    Hi BDS,
Unfortunately, you are correct that there isn't any native MIDI control in LabVIEW.  However, I did find some example code that shows how to use the Windows Multimedia DLL to communicate with a Windows MIDI device from LabVIEW.  I hope that it will provide you wiith an excellent starting place or simply a good template for your own driver.

  • Audio interface for Logic 9

    Hi all,
I'm looking into upgrading my home-studio gear, abandoning my Tascam FW-1884 (no LCD, too much space, 2 dead faders) in favor of a new control surface + interface combo. My DAW will not change, still using Logic. I'm trying to catch up with what's been around in the last couple of years, which I've spent mostly away from Logic, tracking old-style on my Yamaha AW2400. Logic has evolved, too... time for a change.
For the control surface, I'm pretty much set on the Euphonix MC Mix, even though there are apparently some problems still. The only other option (in my budget) seems to be the Mackie Control which is just as huge (physically) as the Tascam.
Since I'll be separating the control surface from the interface, I will be needing, well, an interface. After reading tons of stuff on the web about the recent products within my budget, I've narrowed down the options and I would be happy to have some advice, knowing that I compose and record mainly alone, sometimes using guest musicians for some instruments that I don't play (violin) and vocals. A MIDI port would be nice but is not essential, as I'm running everything through my Fantom X6's USB port. Portability is no concern.
I wanted to get an Apogee Ensemble, but then I saw the Focusrite Saffire 56 which is almost a fourth of the price. What I don't get is the difference in price: the Saffire is priced almost the same as the Duet, which only has 2 input channels, no Word Clock, no ADAT or S/PDIF... I know the Apogee preamps are supposed to be unbelievable, but I'm not sure I will be hearing the difference (I'm recording with an AKG C4000 and listening through a couple of KRK V6s). Preamps are important, of course, but most of what I work with are AU instruments (Kontakt and Synful, essentially).
There also seems to be the option of a RME Fireface 400 which has very good reviews but which is not a recent product (I know it's a silly reflex to always get the newest thing, but I'm not immune to silliness).
I know almost everything there is to know technically about the Apogee devices and their tight integration with Logic. However, I'm used to be surrounded by gear and software, and I don't mind a trip to an external applet (Focusrite mixer or RME TotalMix) to handle routing. I'm just trying to find the best interface I can find for my money. I'm not too excited about the "Power Trio" hype from Apple, Apogee and Euphonix, since from what I read in the forums there are issues with every Logic update and the integration is not that wonderful.
    Any ideas are welcome.
    Thanks.

I use the Power Trio and it works great. There have been a few software issues along the way but what software doesn't have issues. My best advice is to check it out for yourself. The duet is a great interface the sound is fantastic. Based on it's performance and sound I would get the Ensemble if I needed more in's and out's.
I replaced the older Mackie Control with a MC mix and couldn't be happier. My MCU never worked right from the non calibrating faders to the fact it needed it's own midi interface to work properly. I'm sure the new MCU works a lot better but it's still huge. The space on my desktop where the MCU would sit is now taken by MC MIX, MC Transport, 4 Hard drives,Akai MPD 24,FirewireUSB hub, Ethernet Desktop switch. The MC MIx is a gem, plug and play. I'm really starting to dig in to pulling up plugins on it and tweaking them from the MC Mix and controlling duet from the MC Mix also.
I went with these products based on their reputation for making quality stuff and plug in play operation with Apple but if it didn't work I would return it.

  • Logic 8 Ducker plugin causing audio hang-up

when the stop button or the space bar is pressed during playback, the ducker plugin with the lookahead feature turned on causes the audio of the sidechained track to hang-up repeating a small half second sample over and over. in this case a voiceover announcement. I've tried re-booting and re-estblishing the plugin but it keeps doing it. when the lookahead feature is turned off it works great but I need the music bed to start ducking before the voiceover announcement begins for a smoother effect.
Logic 7.2 did not have this problem.
Also, both Logic 7.2 and Logic 8 puts the duration of the lookahead feature at the top of a bounced file creating the need to re-trim the beginning of every bounced file.

    HI Sereen & Pancenter,
Great suggestions. I did follow the instructions that at the link Pancenter listed.....But no change in the results. Still crashing w/the Transform/Transpose....features.
Otherwise all the other "Transform" features work ....just not "traspose".
I am on Logic 8. I probably will upgrade to Logic 9 to see if this bug gets fixed. I guess I need to do that anyway as Logic 8 also won't controll a weighted yamaha keyboard (USB) that I bought about a year ago. Logic kept trying to blame Yamaha  and Yamaha was blaming Logic. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
And Pancenter you are right - the Terabyte is storage. the RAM I have is 2 gig.
Thanks so much! Great forum support!

    Hi
Looks like the Promix is transmitting MIDI Note messages with velocity as the "range"???
MS does not like Note message velocity as a "continuous control".... or so it seems??
Can you reassign the transmitted MIDI message to a CC on the Promix?
