Years of data gone, backup DMG won't mount "No mountable file systems"

Could someone help me here, I have this problem.
The reason for this was that I ran into some complications with my boot camp windows install and wanted to start over. After returning the boot camp FAT partition space to Mac OS X it froze while attempting to create a new boot camp partition. "Boot Camp Assistant" suggested I backup my "Macintosh HD" and re-partition my HD because "some files could not be moved." Ok so, I backed-up my "Macintosh HD" volume to a DMG using Disk Utility selecting the volume and clicking new image icon, it is compressed, it is Leopard. I then booted with Leopard install DVD and began the restore process. Everything was working smoothly until the progress bar stopped animating, waited awhile and forced restart. When I restarted my internal HD had only an "Applications" folder which ended its contents with a half copied iDVD.app preceded by 73 other apps successfully restored. Now worst of all my Backup DMG produces the "No mountable file systems" error. Help, oh please help!

Ok, here is the output. It shows there is a problem with the resource fork XML, just like yours Shad Guy. If only their were some specs available I could try to fix it myself. An Apple engineer could most likely fix this in 20 min.
Also, thanks for your help man, having people tell me to give up is the worst.

  • My Backup.dmg is not mounting: No mountable file systems

I had Mac OS X Leopard running with Boot Camp (Windows Vista). I needed extra space for my Mac OS so I deleted the Windows partition using the Boot Camp Assistant. Then, I shut down the computer, but after I turned it on, there was the flashing question mark, which meant that the computer couldn't recognize the Macintosh operating system that was installed. Therefore, I put in the Mac OS Install Disk, and tried to repair the disk but it said invalid BS_jmpBoot in block 000000. Seeing this, I decided to reinstall Mac OS X, but backing up with Disk Utility: Create New Compressed .DMG Image before doing so. After a successful installation, I tried to mount the image, but it says No Mountable File System. I feel hopeless, because all of my precious data was backed up in that disk image. When I try to verify or repair that disk using Disk Utility, it says Unrecognized File System. Are all the files on that image corrupt and impossible to recover, or is it possible to recover those files (but of course, losing some files, since the image appears to be corrupt).

Again, if you cannot mount the image then there's no way to recover the files. If the image would mount then you could try repairing it with Disk Utility or try using recovery software to recover files from it. But if it doesn't mount then there's nothing you can do with it.
If you want to try you can see if recovery software can find files on it. See the following:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
You can download trial versions of the software. The trials can be used to see if the software can recover anything, but then you must purchase the software to actually do any file recovery.

  • DMG backup image won't mount

name-lt.dmg won't mount and says "File too large" as the warning error.  I used Disk Utility to make this compressed image for backup purposes and now I'm afraid I won't be able to open it.  A friend told me to use HexEdit to edit headers on the image.  Does anyone have any advice?  It's a 125gb backup image.  All other images I have made will mount and work fine.

The image was taken using my iMac (10.9) connected with a firewire to a macbookpro running 10.7.5

  • No mountable file system error when open dowloaded dmg

I was provided a link to dowload Fireworks CS3 for Mac. The link allowed me to connect to the adobe ftp server and downloaded a 1.1MB dmg for Fireworks for Mac. However, when I attempt to open the file I get the following error: "The following disk images failed to mount, no mountable file systems". Note the file size seems too small for the full program, but I have downloaded it twice with no error messages on downloading and same file size.
Previously posted under Fireworks but no responses....any ideas?

You have an incomplete file. there is no way that a 1.1MB file could contain the app Fireworks. redownload the complete file and it will mount.

  • Encrypted dmg won't mount

Not sure where best to post this - admins -- if desired please feel free to move.
I created an encrypted .dmg file in disk utility to secure a small amount of info. I did a time machine backup of my machine, then did a clean install of OS X (getting ready to sell my mbp) and later tried to access the dmg on the time machine external drive. When I try to open the .dmg I am prompted for the password (this is NOT a forgotten password issue) and then I get the following error, "The following disk images couldn't be opened....no mountable filesystems"
I also did some searching on this and tried to do command line "hdiutil attach", and get the same no mountable file systems error.
I also tried entering the password and saving to keychain, but no results.
any help appreciated, extremely important info on this disk, thanks.....

Solved my own question with some more searching - the solution that worked for me is described here - step by step:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/52C5671CD2608532862575ED0001F1EC
and in case that link ever gets broken here's the copied text:
    Open Terminal.app (Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
Once the terminal opens, type 'cd'  without quotes.
Navigate to the folder that contains the .dmg file.  In this article the .dmg file is located on the desktop and is called LabVIEW.dmg
Click on LabVIEW.dmg once and hold the mouse button down.
Drag the mouse into the Terminal window, and then release the mouse button.  This will add a static link after the 'cd' command we typed earlier.  You should see something similar to this:
Delete the actual file name (in this case LabVIEW.dmg) so that only the file's folder path remains:
    Press the Enter key.
Type 'hdiutil attach LabVIEW.dmg -shadow'  without quotes.
(replace LabVIEW.dmg with the name of the .dmg file you're trying to mount).
The Terminal will pause briefly and then mount the .dmg file.
National Instruments only recommends using this solution for .dmg files that are read-only.  This is due to fact that a shadow image is created that contains any changes to the .dmg file.  Since all National Instruments .dmg files are read only this method will work without issue in Mac OS X.

  • DMGs Won't Mount!

    Hello,
I am downloading iTunes 6 for my PowerMac G4 Cube. The DMG file downloads fine. But it won't mount. When I double click on it to mount it, this comes up:
"The following disk images failed to mount
iTunes6.0_Mac_OSX.dmg - Reason: No mountable file systems.
I have deleted a couple of apps such as Chess, Image Capture and iMovie but I do not believe that this has any effect on this problem.
    Thanks!

Hi, the DMG could be corrupted. When it's an extremely large file, sometimes missing a few packets makes the file broken. Have you tried redownloading it several times?

  • DMG "no mountable file system" created when booting Leopard DVD

I was in the process of rebuilding my managers MacBook but I decided to make a full disc image before messing with any of her data. I plugged in a firewire hard drive and booted off my Leopard DVD. I selected the internal hard drive and clicked the new image button. Saved the image to the external. No errors were reported. Everything ran fine. Made a 50.3GB image file.
I them selected the internal HD and selected Restore and used our corp image file for and restored the internal drive with our image. I rebooted ran some updates joined it to the domain. Now it was ready for her user data. I went to mount the image of her data and it gives me "No mountable files system".
I have tried LOTS of things to get back at her data. I have used Data Rescue II, Disc Warrior, trying terminal commands listed in the following threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8036718
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1218394&tstart=0
When I do the command "hdiutil udifxmldet <yourbrokenimage>" it tells me no XML data is present. Data Rescue II shows me all the files in the image but when I try to restore them all the data is 0 bytes. When I scavenge the data files it gives me files with random names and some data but a 2 page PDF file is 100MB and there is no file large enough to be her entourage database. So somehow things are kind of smushed together.
Is there any way to recover this data properly? He last backup, which she is responsible for doing on her own, was 6 weeks ago. But i know I will never hear the end of it if I lose 6 weeks of her data.
Please help if possible. Her MacBook is still under AppleCare and the Leopard DVD is a licensed retail copy though the computer is actually runnning 10.4.11 I used the Leopard dvd to make the image. And yes I tried opening the image with a leopard machine.

If you failed to mount the image after initially creating the image (a bootable backup/clone would have been a better option); then, I surmise that her stuff is gone. Sorry, but I have nothing else to offer.

  • Corrupt DMG file - "No Mountable File Systems"

Hello, I have an important backup DMG file that I can't mount. When I try, I get this error..."No Mountable File Systems".
I have tried the following with no success...
    - repairing the DMG in Disk Utility.
    - converting the DMG in Disk Utility to a R/W image.
    - Repair in Data Rescue 3
    - Repair in Disk Warrior
    - Repair in File Salvage (this actually recovered a single mp3 file, so this makes me think the data is still there)
    - Repair in Stellar Phoenix
    - Repair in Disk Drill
I have read on one of these forums (I can't seem to find it anymore) that someone had a similar issue and someone helped them through a lot of digging around in the broken file (something to do with headers?)...and in the end they managed to repair the broken DMG file. I would really like to repair this file, so just in case someone who knows how to fix this sort of thing, I've shared the file here...
    files.me.com/jeffvandyck/x4qv9c
I have a few other files like this and would really like to recover those as well. I'm relatively technical, and once I understand what I'm looking for I can try to fix the others.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • Problem with DMGs and error: "No Mountable File Systems"

Problem with DMGs and error: "No Mountable File Systems"
The files are not corrupt. The problem is occurring with all DMGs that are apparently formatted in MS-DOS FAT16. No the file will not mount with Disk utility or any other disk mounter programs I have found.
This is now the second time this occurred and now effects my MBP and my iMac. First time i spent days with Apple support and the only solution was ultimately back up the data, reformat the HD, start over from scratch and reload everything. That lasted about a month before the problem resurfaced and is now an issue on both iMac and MBP.
I tried to identify all the programs I installed immediately before the error, as I am convinced it is the result of a software conflict.
    Recent programs includes:
    1) upgrading from Parallels 5.5 to 6.0 on both machines.
    2) using an HP secure II usb drive and setting up a secure disk.
    3) installing new itunes 10
    4) new update to Flip For Mac.
The files affected are downloaded dmgs, including personal brain and google earth, both which are formatted in FAT16.
Any help or thoughts? Apple has now spent hours trying and they say i now have to reformat and wipe and start over. That is unacceptable and based on pasted experience the problem is likely to repeat itself. having to wipe and rebuild a HD ever month is not an solution. i need to fid the root problem.
In the meantime, anyone got a real solution on how to extract the data for a DMG using a different method?

Where you able to find the solution, i am having the same problem, all was fine till i install some programs only same one i saw did we both did was flip4mac i uninstalled it but the problem is still there, i also restored and erased the hardrive but im not up to doing that all over again. If you found anything out let me know i would greatly appreciate it

  • Dmg - no mountable file systems

I am running 10.3.9 - all my dmg files now come back with this warning: The following disk images failed to mount
    Image: <dmg>
    Reason: no mountable file systems
I've got no multiple users (just me) no file sharing no file protection that I can think of and this just strated out of the blue
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It really depends how you're acquiring these .dmg files. If you're saying that you've got some .dmg files on your Mac that you've had for some time and that you used to access and now cannot, then I'd be concerned that you've a disk problem. In this case I'd run First Aid from Disk Utility or run your Apple Hardware Test CD and see what responses you get. It never hurts to Repair Permissions as well... Oh, and verify your disk's SMART status - you'll find this by highlighting your HDD in the left-column in Disk Utility, and the SMART status is reported in the pane at the bottom. It should read Verified. Otherwise, I'd make a backup ASAP.
If you're saying that every .dmg file that you are downloading recently has reported this error, then it may be that these are simply corrupt, especially if they're all coming from the same source (e.g. P2P, the same website, etc.).
You may want to check out this thread at another discussions board. The reply from Silversleeves should help.
    Good Luck.

  • Problems mounting dmg images "no mountable file systems"

I have noticed with many DMG images I cannot open them. I constantly get an error "no mountable file systems".I sent the same DMG image to my friend on his Mac and he can open it, so it is on my side. I also have noticed my pen drive is not showing up on the desktop, but shows in disk utility. I have noticed these problems since I cloned and replaced my HD. I have also added a 50 GB partition to Boot Camp, if this should matter. Any idea??

    repaired permissions and rebooted.
    all ok now

  • DMG Won't Mount. File Mount Greyed Out In DU?

    Had this problem before.
I can mount the .dmg by double-clicking it but I can't do it in Disk Utility as the Mount command is greyed out.
I believe that last time I was told to hold the Shift or Option key down whilst selecting File>Mount but I can't get it to work this time.

Yes the grey "Mount" changes to "Open".
Last year someone told me how to un-grey the "Mount" in the File menu but I can't remember exactly how or find the original thread.
In those days I was on Leopard so maybe it's changed.
It's not a problem . . . . just one of those irritating little things.

  • Dmg won't mount

I have one encrypted disk image that failed to mount. It accepted the password, just didn't mount. Other similar DMGs work fine.
I recreated the image from data in the trash, then dragged the bad one to trash. Now I can't empty trash because that dmg is "in use". I can retrieve it from trash, but can't do anything with it.
What can I try to make this image mount? Pretend like it's important data.
I've tried logging out and back in, no go. Tried repairing permissions, I didn't expect that to do anything, and it didn't.
I'm a new user (3 weeks). OS X has been horribly unstable. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before thinking about a reinstall.

Try power cycling the entire network
That means powering off every device in any order that you want
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run 2-3 minutes
Start the next device connected to the modem next, and let it run a full minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until the entire network is back up
Check the network for proper operation
