Yellow bar in Storage

In "About My Apple" under the storage tab, what does the yellow bar "other" mean? Other takes up most of my storage and I'm out of space on my disc so I'd like to trash some things.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
          iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

The storage yellow bar is pretty full.  How can I lower this storage part in my computer.

Anything that's not an audio, movie, photo, app or backup. So it could be text files, spreadsheets, system files, pdfs, ebooks, presentations, email, fonts, etc.

  • How to reduce, or remove the yellow other bar in storage?

I just recently got a MacBook Pro 13 with Retina Display.  I was looking over my storage capacity after I transferred my backed up information form my previous MacBook, and I noticed that the yellow other bar takes up 100.64 GB out of my 256 GB hard drive!  Someone PLEASE HELP me either lower the amount of storage that the yellow other bar takes up, or erase it completely!  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The yellow bar is merely a display of information. There is none on your disk drive. It simply reflects all the files on your disk that cannot be placed in the other categories. For example, most of OS X is in the yellow category. All your data are in that category. You can easily remove all of it by simply reformatting your disk drive.

  • Ipod touch 4th gen - what is the yellow bar know as "other" in storage on itunes?

ipod touch 4th gen - what is the yellow bar known as "other" in storage on itunes?  It is using all the space and not allowing me to download anything else.  Is there a way of getting rid of it?

It includes arwor, mail. messages and some app date. Basically, what is not icluded in the other categories. If over about 1 1/2 GB that usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.

If Other (the yellow bar) is too big something is corrupted.  The only solution (that I know of) is to restore from your most recent backup using iTunes (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).

  • I need to add a website to the sites which are allowed to install add-ons & have instructions to do so but do not have a yellow bar across the top of my screen in order to click on "Edit Options."

I tried to install an update for Adobe Reader but Mozilla Firefox will not install it until I add them to the Allowed List. The first step is to click on "Edit Options" in the yellow bar across the top, but i don't have a yellow bar or actually anything that says Edit Options.

The instructions on the Adobe site are outdated and do no longer apply to current Firefox versions and you can ignore those instructions and save the Adobe installer to your desktop and start the installation with a double-click on that file.

Hey Gurus I've just shot a seminar, three cameras, Cannon's reasonably new XA20HD's. File format 1920X1080 MP4 17mbs 25 frames. Am running PremProCS6. I import the files into Prem, they come in ok but will not display. Got a yellow bar and a yellow Media Pending screen. What the? Have to cut this stuff soon! Wont even import into Media Encoder. Says there are no usable streams in the media! Just saw a podcast title about stress in the editing business. Better listen to the one! Any help would be most appreciated. J.

Copy ALL contents of SD card to a folder on edit hard drive. not just video clips, everything. Then in Premiere, import using Media Browser (tab at lower left of Premiere screen). This usually does the trick. There is metadata contained in the SD card files that is needed, not just the video clips alone.

  • FAQ: Why do I have a red or yellow bar over my sequence, and how do I render previews?

The first thing to know is that a yellow bar isn't a sign of a problem (nor is a red bar, necessarily).
    See this article for details:
Red, yellow, and green render bars and what they mean
... and this movie for a somewhat less detailed explanation:
Why is there a red or yellow bar in my sequence?
    Here's the summary:
green: This segment of the sequence has a rendered  preview file associated with it. Playback will play using the rendered  preview file. Playback at full quality is certain to be in real time.
yellow: This segment of the sequence does not have a  rendered preview file associated with it. Playback will play by  rendering each frame just before the CTI reaches it. Playback at full  quality will probably be in real time (but it might not be).
red: This segment of the sequence does not have a  rendered preview file associated with it. Playback will play by  rendering each frame just before the CTI reaches it. Playback at full  quality will probably not be in real time (but it might be).
none: This segment of the sequence does not have a  rendered preview file associated with it, but the codec of the source  media is simple enough that it can essentially be treated as its own  preview file. Playback will play directly from the original source media  file. Playback at full quality is certain to be in real time. This only  occurs for a few codecs (including DV and DVCPRO).
Note the uses of the word probably above. The colors aren’t a  promise. They’re a guess based on some rather simple criteria. If you  have a fast computer, then a lot of things marked with red may play back  in real time; if you have a slow computer, then some things marked with  yellow may need to be rendered to preview files before the segment can  be played in real time.

This is not the work of a virus, or any other kind of malware. What it sounds like is a very badly corrupt hard drive causing all manner of corruption in your various system components and applications. You probably need to erase your hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch, as ds store has said.
If you actually had malware, Sophos would find it. If Sophos found nothing, there was almost certainly nothing to find. If something like Sophos ever should find malware, unless the malware has "OSX" or "MacOS" in the name, it probably isn't Mac malware and thus isn't something you need to worry about (other than not passing it on to other people).

  • Can't preview "yellow bar" stuff

I'll make this as simple as possible.
When I have a clip that won't play back in realtime, Premiere often marks it with a yellow bar, indicating a belief that it can render the clip on the fly.
    Here's the problem:
    - This belief is commonly mistaken.
    - Since it's marked yellow, not red, I can't render a preview.
    Thus:
    - It is impossible for me ever to watch this section of timeline without manually rendering and replacing it with the rendered file.
    Outcome:
    - This is not so much a performance issue but a logical loophole: I can't render effects that I absolutely know will not render in realtime. This can make the software practically unusable in certain situations.
    The fix:
    - The root cause of this problem is often not rendering effects, although it can be, and it's a logical loophole that needs to be closed regardless - if I hit "return", that's a very strong message that I want a preview rendered.
However, this is sometimes not the problem. Premiere Pro CS5 on my system, with the CUDA acceleration working, is more than capable of rendering advanced effects on the fly with 1080p25 material. The problem in my application is often uncompressed media, with which Premiere Pro CS5 has seriously crappy performance as I've mentioned several times previously.
So once again for the nth time, Adobe, can we expect any movement on this?
    P

    >> it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that it's Premiere that's
    >> wrong because it's the sole remaining variable.
So, if I understand you correctly, you're saying that there is no
possible way that could be interfering with or
    affecting ?
Sort of. At some point, it is the responsibility of the software to be
reasonably compatible with a range of environments. If I had several other
pieces of software giving the same trouble, I would be making these points
elsewhere, but that's not the case - everything else works fine. If some
microscopic sub-option of configuration is causing this - as is of course
entirely likely to be the case - then I would be overwhelmed with joy to
work constructively with someone to figure it out - but the only someone
who can really do that is Adobe.
And on another level, it is absolutely a disk bandwidth issue. If you
throw a ridiculous amount of bandwidth at it, Premiere works fine with all
codecs. Everything else works fine, and Premiere works fine on some codecs
without demanding excessive bandwidth. These facts localize the problem
really rather well to Premiere's file demuxer and codec handling modules,
and that's not a political point made in anger, that's just an engineering
    deduction.
We have a very simple way to check your configuration, http://ppbm5.com
I'll look at that as soon as I get a free couple of hours.
