Yellow Ink Won't Print

I have a Photosmart Wireless B109n-z which stopped working a while ago because of a "carriage jam".  I've managed to fix that by a service/reset option (hurrah!) but now the yellow ink just won't print!  The printer is recognising that it's there as the levels are depleting rapidly - who knows where it's going though!!!  I've done a second level printhead clean but to no avail.  I replaced the cartridge with a new one today (my retailer very kindly gave me a new free one) but still nothing.
Any thoughts on what could be wrong?
Thanks
Rej

Hi @Gwen7,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that your yellow ink will not print with your HP Officejet 8500. I am happy to look into this for you!
Please see this post, Re: 8500 won't print yellow, by my colleague @X-23.
If you have gone through the guide posted there already, and replaced the cartridge, the next step is to replace the printhead, and as my colleague stated there is a chance the printhead may not resolve the issue, and therefore a new printer is needed, if the printhead does not fix the issue.

I have changed over to new Laptop and am runnign WIN 8.1.  Installed 6520 Photosmart which was working perfectly on XP before change over.  Updated with new drivers- installed-uninstalled and installed printer upgrade from HP website.  The Black ink won't print. I have cleaned printhead...many times.... but the black still won't print.  Have replaced cartridge- naturally use HP products.  Still won't work..... do I need to replace printhead??
    Running AVG virus.
    Appreciate some further help.

    Hi Folks,
    @Perth-Aussi-
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 6520, you are unable to print in black ink after replacing the cartridge.
I would like you to continue here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, I understand you may have done some of these steps already but I need you to complete all steps in order to resolve the missing black issue you are experiencing.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
If you are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker
@Grun- Please use the same troubleshooting document as mentioned above. If you are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. I highly recommend you call our technical support at 800-474-6836, I trust they will be able to assist you regardless of the warranty status. • Blank ink won't print on 5520 Photosmart

I have done everything....cleaned, aligned, checked and double checked.  I have installed four new cartridges, and my black still won't print.  Everything was fine and then all of a sudden my 'old' black wouldn't work (it was only 1 month old), so I printed a couple of printhead and alignment pages.  No changes.  Still no black.  So I went out and purchased all new cartridges (and all HP) and a substantial cost.  The problem is still there.  I don't need to know about the four steps, etc as I have done them all at least three times.  When the alignment sheet is printed, all I get is blue and a couple of red words at the bottom of the page.  Should I just give up, throw this *!*!*!*!* away, and start using my Canon?  I am so frustrated that I could just cry

As this is a 5520 I'd advise calling HP Phone Support about, regardless if it's out of warranty, as you may require a replacement printer.
Can you please let us know how you get on?
    Thanks

  • C309a black ink won't print - just put in a brand new cartridge

I have gone thru all instructions on how to make the ink print but nothing is working.  It is printing but it is so faint you cannot read it.  I went thru the set up and cleaned the print heads twice. I have reinstalled the print cartridge many times.  I checked the vent and it looks OK.  Still will not print.  Next step in the instructions is to replace the printhead.  Not sure if that is worth it??  It is no longer under warranty so do I just need to bite the bullet and get a new printer???

If the troubleshooting steps in the document here do not resolve the issue the post here may help.

  • Cyan ink won't print on my officejet pro 8500

Windows 7 64-bit.  But printer does the same thing from my XP computer.
I get no error messages from my printer.  Nothing at all has changed - but the blue has just stopped printing.  no upgrades, new programs, etc.  EVerything is the same as it was yesterday.
I have followed the troubleshooting document, and run thru the first 2 levels of printhead cleaning.  I have no streaks anywhere, just a missing blue, even the the cartridge is 1/2 full.  One day it printed, and the next day it stopped.  Same paper, etc.
I have hard reset the printer, I have hard reset it with the cyan cartridge out, then put it in when I get the error msg that its missing, I've restarted my computer (it does the same thing from my other computer though, so its not the computer).  I have read all the HP maintenance instructions and follow them.
    Suggestions???

What is the model or product number of your printer?  If you have the Officejet Pro 8500 All-In-One A909a, you can take a look at this document, which describes cleaning the printheads.  How long have the ink cartridges been in the printer?  The cartridges should have an expiration date on them.  If they have been in a while, I would replace all of them, then begin troubleshooting.
Please let me know if this helps.
    Good luck!

  • Black Ink won't print & "Ink System Failure"

I have a 3 year old HP Photosmart Plus e-ALL-IN-ONE B210, Product # CN217A.  I was doing a lot of printing yesterday, noticing that I was getting low on Black ink.  Then I got a very light page and changed the black ink cartridge.  I installed it and....nothing!  I cleaned the print heads...nothing.  Thinking I had a bad cartridge, I went to the store and exchanged it.  Again, nothing.  So following direction's on HP's website, I removed the print head and gently wiped it off.  I placed it back, following directions, reinserted the ink cartridges and now I get the "Ink System Failure."  I also cannot align the print cartridges, either.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As it's 3yrs old, it's likely out of warranty (typically warranty is a year from purchase date). It might be worth soaking the printhead as described by @Bob_Headrick below....
    1) Get a pan and put 1/2" of very hot (not boiling) water in the bottom.
    2) Next remove all the ink cartridges, then remove the printhead assembly.
    3) Gently put the printhead nozzles down in the water and let it soak for five minutes.
    4) Remove the printhead and gently dry the electrical contacts.
    5) Put the printhead back in the printer and then reinstall the ink cartridges.
Please let us know if this works
    Thanks

I even replaced both black & photo black cartridges thinking that was the problem. I have cleand the print heads & printed test pages. printed color inks only.

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve black not printing on your Photosmart c410 printer.  If the steps there do not resolve the issue the post here may help.

  • HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m Black Ink won't print

My HP photosmart Plus 209a-m stopped printing black ink. I've had it for less than a year and it worked perfectly up until last night when all of a sudden it stopped printing black ink.. All other colors work fine. I've taken every action suggested by HP support site, I've cleaned the print heads, ran alignments, changed cartridges twice to new one (have never used anything but HP new cartridges) and still no black ink. So I searched for an answer outside the HP site and tried every suggestion I came across but still to no avail. I did find, however, that there are a lot of people with the same problem but I've yet to find one person that has solved it. Please somebody help me!

I just replace all of my ink cartridges.  My yellow ink is not printing out.  I cleaned the heads, but no luck.  The old yellow cartridge didn't print either.  Help?
    This question was solved.

    Hello @ThruHiker,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are not able to print in yellow on your HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Now I know that you have tried 2 yellow cartridges and cleaned the printheads to no avail. At this point I am going to walk you through some additional troubleshooting steps. However, there is a chance that the Printhead mechanism built into your HP Officejet may be defective. The Printhead is the part that the cartridges fit into. It controls 'reading' the cartridges and putting the ink on the page. If the Printhead is defective, than the print system in your printer is defective and a whole unit replacement may be needed. In saying that, please follow the steps below so we can work together to identify what is causing this issue and ideally resolve this issue.
First, I'm going to have you print a standalone Print Quality Diagnostic Report. This report will let us know if you're experiencing a software or setting issue on the computer, or a hardware issue with the printer.
How to Print a Print Quality Diagnostics Report:
    1. Load plain white paper into the input tray.
    2. On the printer control panel, touch the Right Arrow () to display more options.
    3. Touch Setup (). The Setup Menu displays.
    4. Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Reports.
    5. Touch Print Quality Report. The test page prints.
    1 - Printer information
    2 - Test Pattern 1
    3 - Test Pattern 2
    4 - Test Pattern 3
If yellow prints successfully: Than the yellow quality issue is not an issue with your printer. Rather, your printer is experiencing a setting or software conflict on your computer that is causing yellow not to print properly. To ensure that everything is installed properly on your computer can I please have you click here to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will run on your computer and 'fix printing' issues for you. Should any software, driver, or connection conflicts be detected than the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you.
If yellow fails to print: Than you are experiencing a print system hardware issue. To resolve this issue can I please have you click here and run through the Print Quality Troubleshooting steps provided. Please run through Solution one: Use genuine HP cartridges, Solution five: Check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty cartridges, and Solution six: Print and evaluate a diagnostic page, and then troubleshoot defects. Also, be sure to run through any sub-steps included in the Solutions I listed above.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • HP OfficeJet Pro L7590 suddenly won't print yellow ink.

My OfficeJet Pro L7590 suddenly won't print yellow ink.  The cartridge isn't empty.  It still prints everything else.  Things that require yellow ink come out a different color (ie: green comes out blue).  I've cleaned the printheads several times from the "tools" menu and the report says the printheads are in "good" condition.  I've also tried soaking the printheads in hot water for 5 min like was mentioned on here.  Still nothing.  Any suggestions?

Hi - you've worked through all the steps in the support document here? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01957673&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...
If you have, and still see bad red and green blocks on the PQ Diagnostic page (as described in the document), you may have to replace the black/yellow printhead (even if the printhead health is reported as 'good'). You can check your warranty on that printhead here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&docname=c00206040

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 - Now won't print in Black Ink Only!

Hi! After previously owning the Hp Officejet 8500a pro and experiencing numerous issues related to the 'Black Only' printing! We then decided to scrap the HP Officejet 8500a and move on to a new printer! We did a LOT of research into the new printer and at the time of purchasing the 8600 around August 2012 last year, we found no online content of similar issues relating to the 8500.  We even contacted Live HP support to check if the 8600 would print in Black Ink Only with the colours cartridges levels at empty. The HP live chat representative informed us the printer WOULD indeed print in black only with all COLOUR cartridges installed and empty. Since we bought the new 8600, we have replaced just the Black setup cartridge with a Genuine HP Black 950xl. A few days ago all colours where at about 10% levels, apart from the yellow which then ran empty. We have been printing in Black Ink Only with the following message appearing, since the yellow ran out: "Yellow Cartridge out of ink, click continue to print in Black Ink only" As of this morning, the below message appeared with no option to print ink black only! "Depleted cartridges must be replaced to resume printing" The Yellow and now Magenta where out of ink, with no option but to purchase both cartridges, we replaced them and ran off 8 order sheets in Black Ink Only.  Both cartridges where replaced with Genuine HP. Directly after printing these 8 pages, the current Ink Levels are now: Magenta - 100% fullCyan - Has now ran out with a Red X (Annoying!!!)Yellow - Is showing a 10% Ink level with a brand new cartridge installed!!!Black - 40% full 1. Why am I no longer able to print in Black Ink Only with the empty colour cartridges installed?2. Why is the Yellow showing 10% full with a brand new ink cartridge installed full of ink? Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this, I would very much appreciate some imput. Kind RegardsKev Challis

I know it won't print without a cartrige. I was trying to explain that this "problem" is one that needs to be prepared for in advance by not having empty cartriges installed. I am not trying to find a way around the way the printer is made to function. My printer came with the color cartriges that I plan on having for a long time because I rarely need to print anything in color. The link Jason posted clearly states that this printer, being a IIC, needs all cartriges installed in order for it to print. Here is the section:  For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function. (empahsis mine) Why it needs all supplies installed to function? I don't know and don't care. Why does it not print with empty color cartriges installed (the first question of the person that started this thread)? I don't know and it doesn't really matter. Have one set of color cartriges on reserve in case one of the ones you have runs out of ink. Don't want to hassle with this "problem"? Own another printer that is not an IIC inkjet printer.

  • Won't print black ink

HP5510 All In One.  Printer started printing in very light blueish gray ink.  Changed the black cartridge (NEW HP ISSUED not refurbished) and it still didn't work.  Cleaned printeheads, aligned printer, unplugged printer and still didn't work.  I then ran out of yellow ink so I replaced it and it still wouldn't print black.  Then I ran out of blue ink working on all these issues and replaced blue cartridge now it won;t print at all.  I have repeated all the above steps. Now my magenta ink is low.
When this problem started all the colored cartridges were close to full. The ink has been depleted with repeatedly following the directions to correct the black ink issue.
I have put the printer in greyscale, black ink only and still the issue is unresolved.  The printer is not in warranty.

    Hi @turtleinthesand,
