Yellow 'Other' Capacity.

My iPhone 5 is taken up by 7.53GB of 'Other'. I don't have a ridiculous amount of contacts, calendar events, voice memos, notes, emails, saved safari pages or anything like that (especially after I went through and deleted half of them all to decrease the size of my 'other' capacity, not that it worked). I even restored my iPhone and it barely made a difference. I've tried everything that I've read on these discussion boards and none if it has seemed to help. I've read a few things about 3rd party apps and 'tmp lost files' or something but I have no idea what any of that means. I'm considering just taking my phone into an Apple Store and seeing what they have to say. Unless someone here can help me? This yellow bar is taking up over half of my phones full capacity.

"If i do that will I lose anything off my phone?"
Yes.
You should make sure that everything is on your computer first

  • How to reduce, or remove the yellow other bar in storage?

I just recently got a MacBook Pro 13 with Retina Display.  I was looking over my storage capacity after I transferred my backed up information form my previous MacBook, and I noticed that the yellow other bar takes up 100.64 GB out of my 256 GB hard drive!  Someone PLEASE HELP me either lower the amount of storage that the yellow other bar takes up, or erase it completely!  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The yellow bar is merely a display of information. There is none on your disk drive. It simply reflects all the files on your disk that cannot be placed in the other categories. For example, most of OS X is in the yellow category. All your data are in that category. You can easily remove all of it by simply reformatting your disk drive.

  • Why would my Ipod Classic 160 GB (Late 2009) have remaining 224 MB or 0.20 GB of Used "Other" Capacity when everything else was restored to default as I intended?

I'm running the latest version of Itunes 10.3.1.55. I have updated the most recent update of Ipod software 2.0.4 PC. After a recent OS crash on a different PC running Vista I lost all files so upon this installation of Itunes I performed Restore to accept my loss of media and start a new library on this Windows XP SP3 PC. Upon restoring to factory settings, Itunes, and my ipod in the about menu say I have 224 MB of Used "Other" Capacity. This reads as 0.20GB on Itunes. I have 0 songs, 0 photos, 0 videos, 0 podcasts, 0 iTunesU, 0 Contacts, 0 notes, and the 3 default games which I assume are apart from the total capacity as they were the first time I plugged my Ipod in. The 0.20GB is part of my total available capacity taking it from 148.79 to 148.5 or so. I have restored 3 times, the first of which was when all my Ipod contained was 5.1 gigs of unknown to myself "Other" files. which it diminished to the 0.20 I am at now. I am confused as to why Restoring would eliminate all except whatever is left that I can't identify, when it cleared everything else that I intended it to. Any Ideas would be appreciated. This is not Urgent as I'm currently importing albums and expect them to sync correctly, and the used space is not significant, but I am confused as I've explored the disk in windows, and seemingly all but manually formatted the drive. It may even change after I sync for the first time again so I hope I haven't spoke too soon. If that is the case I will post when that time comes. Haven't seen this situation on the forums or on google search. If you want to take this task on, Good Luck!

my summary tab shows the total capacity of my ipod as 74.31 GB's with only 5 GB's of music and other on the ipod. What is taking up the other space? It should be showing a total capacity of 80 BG with 75 GB's left. What's up? Any body know?
All hard drives never have the full advertised storage space, and as a general rule it's around 7% less than stated.
It's because hard drive manufacturers calculate hard drive space different than computers actually read it.

  • I have a problem since installing ios6 when backing up to a laptop I got a message stating there was not enough room on the c: drive, the iTunes bar indicated that apps, etc were using space, but the yellow 'others' category was eating up all the space

I'm running out of space on the bar that shows the usage split (how many gb's for apps photos, music etc) the yellow 'others' category seems to be taking up all the available space. This is happening after updating to ios6. I don't seem to be able to get the backup on my laptop to complete successfully. I'm also unable to get Music to work on the phone. The picture of the cloud appears on screen, sometimes the blue bar appears, but after a while it bombs out and nothing else happens. Any ideas?

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • I have a massive 267GB yellow 'other' file in my memory. How can i find out what it is?

I am cleaning up my Mac and have gone through the usual processes of removing downloads, emptying trash and other usual cleaning up of unwanted files.  On my memory storage I have a massive yellow "other" usage of 267Gb but cannot find out what this consists of.  I have the usual music and photo files but how can I find out what this consists of?

  • Why is my "other" capacity so high when I don't have anything but music

I only have music on my IPOD which is about 3.2 GB and the 3 games it came with but my "other capacity" is the same as my music so my entire IPOD is full with only half actual music. Why is it double dipping? I tried resetting it it still says only 736 KB free.

Instead of doing a Reset, have you tried to do a Restore on the iTunes for your iPod?

  • How can I remove "other" Capacity if my ipod is completely empty?

i just reformatted and restored my ipod to a mac. I have not added any songs yet but under the summery page it states I have 20.8 MB Other Capacity (Orange).
    Please help

If it's in GBs it's unusually large. This often happens when the iPod data base becomes corrupt.
If the iPod is enabled for disk use, you can look at the folders on the iPod through Explorer or Finder and delete anything you don't want.
if it's a corruption it may need to be restored, see how to restore the iPod to factory settings which will erase the iPods contents and reclaim the used space.
Then reload the music from iTunes.

  • HUGE amount of yellow "Other" space being taken up on iPhone 4S. Please help!

I looked around the forum for a solution of the huge amount of yellow "other" space that is being eaten up on my iPhone 4S. Even after a restore, the yellow "other" space is taking up 7.1 GB of space on my phone, up from 6.5 which is what it was before the restore. What is going on? Usually I just erase some texts (I send a lot of pics to my hubby and mom,) erase some voicemails and it drops down to around 1 GB. But I've noticed since iOS 6, that hasn't worked. 7.1 GB is ridiculous. Is there ANY way at all to get rid of it without having to erase absolutely everything about my phone and start over from scratch, including downloading 40 apps all over again?
This seems to be a problem a lot of people have been having over the past few years, why has it never been addressed? There needs to be some sort of utility or something that cleans things up if they have problems with junk not getting deleted or corrupted files sticking around.

Ok, so I appreciate the suggestion that it may be a corrupted file. But have you noticed that I am not the only person having this problem? Actually look. It is a valid problem, and I'm not the only one having it. So asking for Apple to fix it really isn't wrong.

Obviously the problem is not new. And it isn't huge, but it is inconvenient and annoying. How are files getting corrupt so frequently that they are taking up 8 GB of space? There has to be a cause. And the fact that before iOS 6 happened, all I had to do was delete text messages and that would immediately fix it. Why has that changed?
Also, it's a crime to say the word Google? Sorry it offends you, that's what I used to search.

  • I'm using ios5 in iphone4, but the 'other' capacity in itunes is keeping increasing every time after sync iphone4 from PC

I'm using ios5 in iphone4, but the 'other' capacity in itunes is keeping increasing every time after sync the iphone4 from PC, now the 'orther' usage is 0.64G.

You are of course deleting the tunes from within the iTunes interface.
The settings that I am referring to are your device settings for the iPad. It should show in the left column of iTunes when your iPad is plugged in.
Go through your playlists and make sure that the tunes(s) are removed from any playlist. You can prevent the sync as noted above then do a sync and the iPad should update with the content from you Mac.

  • What does the yellow "other" category mean when syncing my iPhone

i am trying to sync my iPhone with my itunes on my computer.  there is not enough space to sync my iphone.  i know i can limit the amount of music i sync but i don't understand what the yellow "other" category means and it is taking up a lot of space.  please help if you know what that means

It represents something that iTunes doesn't recognize as music, videos, books, podcasts, etc.  Normally, the "other" is limited to a few hundred MBs (operating system, app data, etc).  If it grows to a GB or more, it probably indicates corrupted data from an interrupted sync.  Sometimes adding a new song or app will clear up the problem.  You can always restore from your backup to regain a normal amount of "other".
Note:  During a sync, you'll see the "other" bar grow and shrink.  It doesn't mean anything until the sync is finished.

  • Erased and cleared iphone 4s has 1.95 G of yellow other

    Hi
I just cleared and erased my iphone 4s, and when I went to set it up on itunes it showed the phone had 1.95 GB of  yellow other on it. There is nothing on the phone, only what it came with from the factory. How can this be? The only settings that have been set was wifi that is all, nothing put on the phone. How to clear it off?  I tried Diskaid and there were no files to be found, where is this coming from.
    Thanks for any help!

Not matter what your going to have at least 1.0 gb of others on your phone.  If it is bigger than 1.0 gb, then you have corrupted files.
what you have now is perfectly fine.  I have about 5.80 gb of others on my phone, but just don't want to restore as new.

  • HELP!!!! How do you clear up some or more of the yellow Other in iTunes for iPhone?

HELP!!!! How do you clear up some or more of the yellow Other in iTunes for iPhone? To Free up more room on your iphone?

A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup... But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup... Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

A large "other" indicates corrupt files.  A restore should resolve.
Typically it is  a GB or less.

  • What is going to stop my "other" capacity increasing every time i sync new videos to my ipad 2?

I have read several posts all indicating there is a big problem with syncing and "other" capacity increasing.
Everytime i change my video content (every few days) my "other" storage volume increases and total capacity decreases in line with the videos i've removed from the ipad. having done 2 or 3 syncs my other volume is up to 16gb. i am aware that performing a restore will fix this temporarily but i am not going to restore 64 gb of data every 2 or 3 syncs.
what is the proper and actual solution to this problem? (i.e. not restoring constantly)
