Yellow 'Other Storage' Taking up space and won't go away

My son seems to be doing something that makes his iPad and iPhone fill up with 'Other' storage.
over 3/4 the space is now 'other'.
Looking at the 'Usage' section, there are none of the usual suspects using space (Mail, iMessage, Documents).   In fact, Video and others all say they are zero.  If you manually add up the apps that it lists, I'm using 6.53GB total, yet on a 32GB iPad I only have 9GB free.
I'm tired of playing the restore game now that iOS 7 makes you turn off find my ipad and all that crap every time you try to restore it.   Plus it doesn't fix it, it just deletes whatever that stuff is and whatever is happening is making it come right back after a bit.
The other thing is he isn't a heavy user, he mostly watches iTunes library of TV shows.   It's like the Video app is caching something, or putting it somewhere but then saying 'I don't have it' and filling up the iPad.
Any ideas?  this is getting really old.   We've got 5 iPads in the house and his is the only one doing this, but he's the only one who constantly watches purchased videos on it.
"restore it" isn't an idea, because it comes right back.   I'm tired of that game.

It normally builds up slowly.
Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Ways to get rid of/reduce the "Other" storage taking up space on my iPhone?

I didn't really know where to put this question and I'm sure this is a common one but I have 3.78 GB being used up in the "Other" catagory. I know that deleting texts helps, do you guys know of anything else that could help give me back some storage? Oh and same with "Documents and Data", not really sure what that even is to be honest.

    Very welcome.
If restore from backup does not solve, then restore as new.

Assuming you are using iTunes 11.1:
Connect your iPhone to your computer.
In iTunes towards the upper right of your screen you will see the name of your iPhone. Click on it (not the eject symbol.
This will open a series of windows with tabs.
    Select the tab for photos.
Untick the ones you do not want on your iPhone and at the bottom right click on Apply.
    They will be removed.

I'm using a 2009 Macbook Pro and have installed the lastest update 10.8.1

I've been seeing this for some time now and getting quite sick of it. It happens when I've been away at work for the day and come home to find frozen notifications.
You can fix this temporarily by quitting Notification Centre from Activity Monitor but it keeps happening to me every week or so.

  • Green emblem has appeared on the lower left desktop and won't go away.

a few days ago, a small green emblem that looks like a D followed by a reversed C with an X through it has appeared on my desktop in the lower left corner and won't go away. it is on top of everything else on the desktop and is the first thing to appear on startup and the last thing to go on shutdown.
it is there even during the startup screen when the apple appears.
does anyone know what this is and how to correct whatever is occuring in my G4 running OSX.3.9?? thanks.

what do you know. i thought to myself, what would be the simplest solution here that we may be missing. and i tried another monitor. emblem gone.
i guess my old sony VGA monitor has an issue that it is trying to tell me about. in any event, we're good for now. that is a relief.
thanks so much for working with me on this.
With the emblem displaying, hold down the Shift,
Command, and 4 keys simultaneously and take a
screenshot of that area of the screen; if it shows
up, it is present in the computer's offscreen buffer,
and is therefore caused by software. If not, it may
be generated by a process which is drawing directly
to the screen, or it is a hardware issue. Since it
appears at the screen with the Apple logo, it isn't
running under your account, as the contents of your
home folder aren't even consulted until the progress
bar which appears later disappears. It cannot be one
of the Startup Items that may have been set up in the
    Accounts pane of System Preferences.
Anything which would make a change at the Apple
screen would need to be running as root; most often,
this would require that you type in your
administrator password, but there are other ways of
having a process run as root.
In addition, restart your computer from a Mac OS X
installation CD and see whether or not the emblem
appears; this may help determine where it is coming
    from.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • "Other" Storage taking up too much space

I have a macbook pro that's almost 2 years old now. When I checked storage, it said I have 187GB of Other storage. How can I find out what these files are? My HD seems to be running out of space. And Others is the only thing left for me to check.

Other is just that; everything besides the categories listed.
OSX, it's work files, caches, logs, etc.
Everything in user accounts other than the categories listed, such as documents, spreadsheets, emails, contacts, etc.
See Lion's Storage Display for details.

Restart the computer and the iPhone might resolve a backup issue. Also, try resetting the iPhone by holding both the sleep/wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo reappears. Afterward, attempt to restore again.
Before you restore,  consider a few other things... One particular onging thread regarding "other" data has users finding that text messages with photos and/or videos taking up the "other" space. Deleting those text conversations helps regain space. (Before deleting, transfer any photos and videos you want to keep to your camera roll or computer.) In addition, check for any deleted phone voicemail messages and delete those to as well as voice memos.
If you decide to restore, the recommendation is to restore as new phone because the backup probably has the "other" data.

  • OBIEE 11G Hidden Sections Taking Up Space and Skewing Dashboard Alignment

    Hi OBIEE Experts,
I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. I am using a dashboard prompt to hide sections within an OBIEE Dashboard. Everything is working and functioning as I wanted, except for the Dashboard/Section alignment. The sections and their content are hiding depending upon the result of the Dashboard Prompt, but even though they are hiding they are taking up space on the Dashboard. In my Dashboard I have this basic layout:
    _____________________COLUMN 1_____________________
    _______COLUMN 2_______ _______COLUMN 3_______
COLUMN 2 contains my Dashboard Prompt that hides/unhides the sections in COLUMN 3. COLUMN 3 has 9 different sections in it, with only one section showing at a time based on the Dashboard Prompt. The Section Headers are set to show for each of these 9 sections.
The problem is coming in that if a user selects the Prompt value that activates the section highest in the Dashboard Layout (Section position 1 in COLUMN 3), the dashboard aligns correctly. The Section Header for the Dashboard Prompt Section in COLUMN 2 is perfectly aligned with the shown section in COLUMN 3. However, if a user selects a prompt value that triggers any section other than the highest to be shown, the alignment gets off. It is especially bad and noticeable when you get to the lowest section in COLUMN 3.
I have attached screen shots (data blacked out) that demonstrate this problem.
    - http://kathrynlwatson.com/Dashboard%20Layout.png Shows the Dashboard Layout
    - http://kathrynlwatson.com/Selected%20Subject%20Area%20-%20Topographies.png Shows the Dashboard and Alignment when the Top Section in the Layout for COLUMN 3 is shown. This alignment is correct.
    - http://kathrynlwatson.com/Selected%20Subject%20Area%20-%20Patient%20Demographics.png Shows the Dashboard and Alignment when the Bottom Section in the Layout for COLUMN 3 is shown. This alignment is incorrect.
Does anyone have any tips for how to correct for this? I have set the format in all sections to have 0 padding all around. I have also tried putting each section in different columns, but that encounters the same problem, with the alignment being affected horizontally rather than vertically. Any help will be very much appreciated!

Well try using percent for all sizing for all columns like (50% width, 30% height..etc). You need to play around to get the closest match. Also, try using blank sections for extra padding with fixed %sizes

  • I am having problems opening pages in safari. the rotating wheel at the right end of the address window doesn't stop even after the page has filled up. then if i try to open other pages it gets stuck and won't open them.

I started having problems opening pages today. When first open a page it seems to download the page OK, but the rotating wheel on the right-hand end of the address field keeps rotating after the page is completely filled up. Then if I try to open other pages it becomes slower and eventually stops filling-in the pages, while the rotating wheel keeps rotating.
I wonder whether junk is being downloaded into my mac, or what is going on. Help will be geatly appreciated.

When was the last time you emptied the Safari cache?
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that didn't make a difference, go back to the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes then click Reset.
And how much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space. Freeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac Guides
If emptying cache or resetting didn't help and there's enough free space on the startup disk, login to another user account, launch Safari. Same problems there indicates a system wide problem. Log back into your admin account so you can check the startup disk.
    Launch Disk Utility. /Applications/Utilities
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
I wonder whether junk is being downloaded into my mac
Nothing should "download" to your Mac unless you initiate the download yourself. You can check the Downloads folder from the Safari > Window menu or your Downloads folder in the Finder.

  • Help! Random blue screen appears and won't go away also getting glitches.

    Hello,
So recently a blue screen has been randomly appearing taking up the whole screen, it won't go away until I hold down the button that turns laptop off. My screen has also been glitching and just now a glitch took up the whole screen then my background dissappeared to be left with this blue screen. Please help, I can't afford a new laptop!

That is odd and I'm not savvy enough to tell you what it means. But I'd venture a guess that you're in some kind of a debug mode. Again, a wild guess, but perhaps if you created a new admin account and log in with that, maybe the more (if that's the issue) will go away?
I'd start up in safe boot mode first and see if that helps. Maybe it's something running in your startup items?
Have you Googled the phrase? You might find something on a more technical Mac site that way? I just Googled <<event sysontoc>> and came up with a few leads you might want to check out.
