Yes fan speed question again..but with a slight

I use my new 27" strictly as a monitor (target display mode) for my mac pro.
The fans all idle while sleeping..upon screen wake after some 15-20 mins the cpu fan slowly creeps up and does so reaching say 1750+ after 50-60 mins...it may get to 2000 or more. All this is with 0% cpu usage and note.. does so by creeping up.The other 2 fans escalate marginally.
I have done the SMC firmware and SMC reset. I suspect the LCD temp sensor controls the cpu fan ( and possibly the others) as the fan speed does hold or somewhat reduce if I put monitor into a dim state. If I put imac into sleep then wake right away it reverts to a much lesser speed..top left corner of case is virtually untouchable....normal ?
EDIT:It appears going into tdm may load the imac cpu but I can't determine because it can't be viewed when in tdm...the fan seems to diminish whem the imac is run in imac screen mode...more testing to be done

I was not trying to insult you, but more to break the ice since it felt like you were "talking down" towards me,

I mean my application is a small 3d game a) what does small or large have to do with anything? The best design is the approach you should use.
b) how do we know that from the question?
Our approach is to suggest the best approach that we know. This approach may or may not be appropriate, that is why you read the tutorial and make up your own mind. Of course all Swing components use KeyBindings. Many of them like the text components or JTable will bind 20 different keys. it's not that i didn't take your advice from the first time you gave it, i read the tutorial of both keyListener and keyBinding, and browsed through the documentation of them both, but still a few things were not clear to me as to the efficiency of a wider usage of keys that's all.
and btw I have the utmost respect to you guys and what you do, and i hope we can still get along, so thank you for your help, i'll menage from here.

  • Fan Speeds, and Mirror Raid with New Internal Hard Drive

    Regards,
I recently installed and formatted a new hard drive in my PowerMac dual 2.3 ghz computer and I have a few questions.
    1. Now that there are two hard drives do I need to do anything to ensure that the fan on my computer can keep them cool? I think the fans I have in the hard drive bay is enough, but I do not know if they will automatically set themselves to run properly. I can monitor the fan speeds and temp from iStat pro, but do not remember what level the temperature was before installing the new one.
    2. Given that my new drive is a SeaDisc hard drive and the older one is a Western Digital, will this cause any problems in creating a mirrored RAID. I believe that both are 7200rpm drives, and my second hard drive is a little larger (I will just have unused space after making the RAID). I am concerned with the fact that these two drives are from two different manufactures. Will this cause problems or drastically slow down the reading and writing of data? Has anyone else experienced problems in making a mirrored RAID from two hard drives that are not exact matches, and even come from different manufacturers?
    Any advice will help.
    Thanks
    earpshmael

    Hi earpshmael;
Generally when creating RAID arrays the more similar the drive the less problems you tend to have.
The real question is exactly why do you want or need RAID?
I think so many people seem to think that RAID will solve all of their problem. I hate to tell you the bad news but it will not.
Generally there are to varieties of RAID available using the software RAID built into OS X which are 0 and 1. RAID 0 or stripling is generally for moving large file rapidly for applications like HD video. It usually doesn't help the OS. RAID 1 or mirroring is for protection from drive failure. It is not a valid backup solution.

  • Sorry, another CPU fan speed question.

    Hi,
Just got a new 2011 iMac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 21 inch. First mac and loving it so far! I can hear the fans just slightly at idle in a quiet room and checked on this forum to see what is the normal idle fan speed.
Most of the results come back with the CPU fan running at around 938 rpm. mine is constant at 1199 rpm. A few others have this speed too, but he majority are around the 938 rpm level (some much higher). My temps also seem lower than most at idle too (due to the higher fan speed i guess).
    OP Drive 998
    HD Drive 1099
    CPU 1199
    My question/s:
Why the difference between machine (shouldn't they be set the same in all machines with the same spec with software)?
    And is the normal??
    Thx

Also, would I notice it being quieter with it at 938 compared to 1199?

  • Fan speed question

    Greetings,
After having some problems playing watch dogs on pc and looking for solutions on the internet I started to notice that my graphics card was producing alot of heat when i was touching it (my case is open on one side & don't ask why :/ ). I started googling and i came upon MSI Afterburner in which you can manually change the speed of the fan.
I changed the settings of the fan speed a little bit, but since i'm no expert i wanted to ask how the other pcgamers would handle this 'fan tab', since i'm no expert on pc hardware/software. I did play a bit yesterday with these settings and i did not get a single crash so i think it has worked allready. I noticed that the speed increased as a was playing and i don't think my card does that automaticly when its getting hot.
I don't care so much about the noise when i'm gaming since i don't pay attention to that (and i could turn the volume up) but i read somewhere that you shouldn't use the fan speed at +70% all the time since it could break sooner.
Here's an image to show you how i arranged it. Its in dutch but i think everyone will still be able to understand the graph (^_^)
I'm using an amd radeon hd 7800 card btw.
Thanks in advance and if you need other information, pls let me know

Well, touching is not a valid way to check if a card gets too hot but checking temps in load and idle with Afterburner. If you want it to be the coolest possible you can of course use a more agressive fan profile with Afterburner that is active as long as Afterburner runs no matter what program you are using besides (browsing internet, running games or whatever). Fan speed will use the steps you predefinded in Afterburner according to the current temps. Don't woryy higher fan speed will not cause a noticeable limitation of the fans lifespan.

  • Macbook Air 2013 fan speed doesn't increase with temperature

I've been noticing this for the past few days now. Even with some minor CPU activity (browser, iTerm along with music playing in the background), temperature increases after some times (according to iStatMenus - CPU Core PECI). What's curious is that unless I use iStatMenus to increase the CPU speed, the default settings don't cause the fans to speed up in order to lower the temrerature. So if my temperature goes up to 50C or above - at the time of writing this, it went up to 55 - the exhaust speed remains around ~1200RPM. It even went as high as 70C once, and yet there was hardly any increase in fan speed.
I'm even more bothered that there doesn't even seem to be any real corelation b/w CPU consumption and the temperatures. At least not any that I have observed so far.
I use the Air on a flat wooden table. I even have the backside propped up so the laptop's backside is isn't even touching the surface.
So, what's the deal here? Any programs you guys recommend that I can use to customize the temperature/fan-speed curve (kinda like I can do with my PC using Afterburner) ? Not that I'm a fan of all the noise, but I'd rather have a noisy laptop than one with a degraded CPU life because of high temps).

Its not CPU use and temp but CPU/GPU temp and fan.
All such fan control are useless patches to correct either fundamental misuse or a flaw at some level.
What model Air do you have, 2013 Air runs much cooler.
    Reset SMC
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Do you have any actual evidence your Air IS running hot?  If not, dont worry.
70C or 158F isnt that hot or "on the verge" of thermal shutdown.....212 F
    no worries

  • Fan speed questions

I have a few questions about the fans and temperature inside my Mac Pro.
    1) what is the temperature sensor labeled "northbridge"?
    2) can using a smc control app to up my minimum fan speed and lower component temperatures be beneficial to my machine or I in some way?
When I am using an application like handbrake/mac the ripper to decrypt a DVD it sets all four cores crunching at 99-100%, performance is spectacular but I wonder about heat.
    thanks

Intel designs their cpu to protect itself before heat would damage the chip. however the same can't be said for FBDIMMs though there the system would k/p or have parity errors I think.
video cards can die, just from dust preventing air from being drawn into the chamber area.
Disk drives could have a shorter life if they operate above 50º regularly.
but in all scenarios the fans should kick into high gear (1500-2500 rpm) if those sensors are working and exceed safe temperature.

  • I had itunes on my computer and items in my library/account. It wouldn't recognise my iPod and ipad. I have deleted itunes and tried to download it again, but with no luck! Help

Why won't itunes download on my PC? I had it downloaded and had items in my library.  It won't recognise my iPod. So I deleted itunes and have tried 3 times to download it again, unsuccessfully. help!

same thing happened to me...i just did the following from another reply and it worked! good luck
Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.

  • Kernel_task high cpu usage, high fan speed, and low cpu tempterature

    Hi,
I've noticed that a lot of people have been having trouble with the kernel_task process, but I couldn't quite find a situation similar to mine (most seem temperature related).
Here is the situation (15' MBP, mid-2010):
    - on boot (while the apple logo is shown), the fans speed suddenly jumps, and stays there, even if the computer has been off for a while.
    - boot takes a little over a minute, which is considerably slower than what I was used to before today
    - when finally started-up, the activity monitors shows kernel_task using between 160-180% of the CPU!
    - temperatures are shown to be around 30C, except for the mem controller at 40C (still very low temp), but the fan speed is arround 6000rpm for both fans.
    - this happened out of nowhere, as I woke the mpb from sleep this morning.
    Since then I've tried:
    - multiple reboots
    - install all updates
    - uninstall flash player (some people where having trouble with that)
    - empty the system cache with Onyx (reported as a cause of slow boot)
    - reset PRAM
    - reset SMC
    - put some ice packs under the mpb to cool things even further!
And so far, nothing has worked! I've had this laptop for 1 year, and nothing had ever failed. I upgraded to lion a few weeks ago, and everything had been working fine since the upgrade. This really happened out of nowhere, and none of the many forums I have read could offer a solution, and cals to apple support do not seem to yield better results (though I scheduled a call with them at 9am this morning, we'll see).
Has anyone had a similar set of problems?
I appreciate any help or advice you may have!
    Thanks!
    -Sebastien

I have the same issue (2.66 2010 MBP Hi-Res Anti Glare.)
I took it to Apple Store Covent Garden, JUST within warranty.
18 days later my machine has a new Main Logic borad, heat sensors, top case, palm rest. etc.
    I turned it on.
The fans kicked in. All processors at 50%, big ole kernal task.
I took it back, geniuses rest SMC and tested it under load and it was fine.
weirdly it failed diagnostics at first but then seemed fine
I came home. Fans kicked in...
I took it back. Diagnostics failed heat sensors again
Replaced logic board and heats sensors again, but more carefully this time just in case, tested again.
I took it home. FANS FANS FANS.
Last time I was in the store I was told my machine was fine and had been thoroughly tested.
    In mac store, no fans.
I erased hard drive and clean installed Lion
    FANS
I replaced hard drive with OCZ SSD, clean LION.
    Fans
    Software update
    SMC
    PRAM
    permissions
    Onyx complete clean/maintenace
    FANS/CPU
switched back to Snow Leopard SSD
    PRAM SMC ONYX etc.
    FANS/CPU
    replaced RAM, memtest-ed. fine, FANS
gonna try again but up to nearly 2 months of all my spare time trying to shut this thing up so I can sell it.

  • Backups run but with warnings - always with WIDwriter and DB Why?

    Hello Members,
I give up.  Trying to get a backup to run.
System: Windows 2012 Standard running on a Dell T320, 8GB ram.
Programs: Symantec EPP, EPP client, and Symantec System Recovery 2012.
Attempting to run window server backup - once a day, and SSR once a week.
No matter what drives/partitions are selected (baremetal, host, system state, recovery,c:,e:,f:) or NOT selected,
the WID writer service and/or database ALWAYS ALWAYS FAILS, the widwriter starts in stable state, and as soon as a backup (either Windows Server or SSR) attempts VSS snapshot - we get either failures (SSR) or warnings (Windows Server).
Can anyone fix this?  Below listed are the errors:

    I am open to ideas,

    Network and Server Installs

My MacBook Pro runs hot when the TB Display is connected, too. Fans are usually constant at 6000rpms (although I barely hear them). But I do run a lot of GPU/CPU intensive apps concurrently, so I've just learned to live with the high temps/fan speeds. I have 2 LaCie connected first in my daisy-chain; a 4TB 2big and a 8TB 2big. But copy speeds are as expected and both drives have the second drive (I un-RAIDed them) as Time Machine devices.
    However...
I've not noticed any slowness whatsoever. I also have 16GB of RAM and, although I sometimes run up against the RAM brick wall (likely because I have 6GB of RAM being used for Windows 7 running under Parallels) I don't notice anything strange about RAM usage.
So... I expect that temps/fans speeds will be high with TB display attached. The 'slowness' that you're having is the only thing that I would find unusual... does Activity Monitor show anything strange?

  • CPU heats up on file copy/backup and fan speed does not increase

    Hi Friends,
I have been having issues with fan in my Dell Studio 1555. It has an ATI Radeon card and I had installed the proprietary catalyst driver as the open source driver is too noisy.
Recently, I noticed that on accessing my hard disk and copy files or running backup (luckybackup), the temperature shoots up from around 60 deg C (just using chrome) to 100 deg C when it would shut down itself. However, it seems like the fan speed does not increase with the increase in temperature to help it cool down.
I tried to get the fan speed details with "lm-sensors" but it would not show the fan speed. Here is the output of sensors:
    [user@domain]$ sensors
    acpitz-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +60.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    temp2: +59.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    temp3: +66.0°C (crit = +100.0°C)
    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 0: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
    Core 1: +58.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Following the Arch wiki, I added acpi_enforce_resources=lax to kernel parameters but it did not help as well.
    Here is the main problem:
    1. CPU temperature shoots on accessing hard drive but fan speed does not increase - Any guide/direction to investigate would be really helpful.
    2. Sensors does not show the fan speed. Read about i8kutils, but couldn't figure out how to get it working with systemd. Any indicators here?

Im having similar issue on a vostro 1710, fan never works... :-/
The fan was bad. I had to replace the fan. However, I have not been able to figure out how to see fan speed in sensors.

  • Dell Vostro 1400 fan speed

I am not able to get lm_sensors to detect the fan speed, so I installed i8kmon and i8kutils and modprobe i8k force=1 to load the module.
Now the sensor applet tells me that my fan speed for Fan1 is around 27000 RPM and for Fan2 it's around 10000 RPM, while both cores of the CPU are around 50 C.
I've never thought of monitoring fan speed until today, but the figures just seem way too great...
I guess I am not doing it the right way. Any suggestions?

I have loaded this driver and added the newid=0x14e4 0x1713 but still
no luck. Still can not ping the Zenworks server or do anything. The
Network lights stay lit when it tries to obtain an IP address for eth0.
I read on another site that you need to update the initrd with the new
tg3.ko driver. I will try this later tonight and see what happens.

  • Fan speed & temperature

    hello guys...
After 8 months before buying my geforce4ti4800se videogard, I began to notice some changes to fan speed & temperature while checking 3d turbo experience...
first of all, when I bough the card (winter season) I cant remember the fan speed but the card's internal temperature was about 39ºc while not playing and 45 ºc playing games... external temperature was around 15 - 20 ºc...
Now , card's temperature stays around 56ºC (without playing games) and jumps to 58 - 59ºc after playing games... Local temperature (32ºC) ...
I cant remember the fan speed at winter but now Im getting a blink message on the driver and the fan speed stays at 3300 rpm....
The increase of the temperature is related to a fan slowdown..? If YES, how can I fix the fan to get more speed? (Its not a source problem)....
Is 58ºC ok for the card or should I get worried about it ?
Help me please!! Thanks a lot,

Without full system specs in your sig line, it's very hard to help. Minimal information gets minimal help. Some people here won't even bother to answer w/o the info, and I can't say that I blame them, especially when the instructions are at the top of the forum.
To me, w/o any other info, it sounds like you have a case ventilation problem.

  • Fan speeds go up when charging?

Hello, this is my first time posting here, and my first mac.
I was using my macbook pro 2.2 today while unplugged, then once i plugged it in when it was low, i noticed the fans sped up to about 3500 - 4000 rpm. I looked in the iStat widget and i guess the highest temp was the memory control, it was about 60c.
Is this normal to happen? If so, can someone explain why?

Yes, fan speed can increase when charging. This is simply due to the fact that the act of charging a battery produces heat which can just be enough to ramp up your fans, especially during summer when ambient teemperatures are higher.

  • Ordinary fan speed with max load?

    Hi all,
I did a search and couldn't find anything so I figured I'd start a new topic so I hope this hasn't been answered before.
First of all, I decided I wanted to start gaming on Win7 in boot camp (3.0) for the first time yesterday, so I installed and started up CounterStrike: Source, initially I was getting 70+fps on all levels, but after a while my framerate would suddenly drop to ~17fps, and the laptop felt very warm (and the fan didn't seem to be spinning much faster than the standard 2000rpm).. A few topics I found said that Windows doesn't seem to be able to control the fan speed and recommended installed smcFanControl (which I'm now using). First off, I was wondering if someone could confirm if this is true? (And is this the same with Vista/XP too?)
Second, I decided that if I were to set a fan speed in smcFanControl, that I would want to be sure that it is capable of removing the heat from the computer, so I decided to run a few tests to see what the standard spinning speed was when the computer was running at 100% (Both cores of the CPU), so I ran 'yes > /dev/null' twice in the command line (once for each core), and I realised that the fan on my MBP (I only have one since I have the 13") didn't really increase from the default 2000rpm until the temperature had reached the late 90˚'s C.
(Both temp and speed measured with iStat/smcFanControl)
I was wondering if this is standard for everyone else? (It seems a little late to just start increasing the fan speed; I'd assume that they'd increase with speed linearly as the temperature rose to keep the laptop at a constant temperature.). So, when does everybody else's fan suddenly kick in? (Mine kept a constant 97˚C afterwards and the fans were running at around 5400rpm - they didn't seem to reach the max 6200rpm that the fan is capable of in a 10min test.) - Although they did reach highs of as much as 101˚C.
When the laptop had cooled down (idling), I decided to run the test again, this time setting the minimum fan speed at 6200rpm and the laptop didn't seem to get much hotter than 85˚C. Surely it would be better if Apple had the fans running at max to keep the CPU temperature lower than 100˚C.. I mean, if my CPU got to 101˚C with the fans still at 5400rpm, when would they reach the max 6200rpm, considering that the CPU is only rated for a maximum temperature of 105˚C?
I'm not complaining, I love my MBP to bits and I think Apple have done a pretty good job designing them and OS X, but I do just wonder if there's either something wrong with mine (or is this the standard for everyone?), or if Apple should perhaps have the fans come on a little sooner to take away the excess heat.
    Thanks everyone.

    hi,
i made a post a few days ago and it looks like heat is a normal problem (as in it normally sails into the 'danger zone). have tried some of the other solutions but not having much luck ..
