Yes you can use a USB drive to transfer photos to the iPad, this is how...

To transfer photos from a USB thumb drive to the iPad you need to:
1. Plug the USB device into a Mac.
2. Open the Disk Utility app.
3. Pick the USB device in the left hand window.
4. Click on the Erase tab
5. Pick MS-DOS (FAT) and hit Erase.
6. After the formatting is done. Click on the USB device to open it up.
7. Make a new folder a name it DCIM (that an eye i)
8. Drag your photos to that folder.
9. Connect the USB kit to the iPad and plug the USB device into it...done.
Now you can on the fly transfer photos to the iPad using a USB thumb drive. No syncing to iTunes. For Windows computers use FAT-16
I've written up on how to play Flip videos on the iPad without converting the video.  Yes it can be done. I will post this later today. (I'm getting old and tend to leave out nouns, adjectives and verbs when writing. I hope you understand the above.)

I made a mistake. The one USB drive that did not work was a 4GB not 2 GB. It is formated in FAT 32. The FAT 32 format is not the issue since II have successfully connected both FAT 16 and FAT 32 formated USB drives. I think it is just too big (too many chips inside) and draws too much power.
Doing a Google search it appears that the maximum drive size with FAT 16 is 2GB (one place hinted it was 4 GB). Since many SD cards are bigger that 4 GB today they can't be FAT 16 and thus FAT 32 has to be acceptable with the CCK and the iPad..

I did this with a two year old 4 gig USB thumb drive. Did you format the drive on a Mac using the DOS format? If your on windows you need to use fat-16. If you use fat 32 or the wrong Mac format you will get an error that this device draws to much power.
I know somebody else that made this work. If you can't get it to work then it's the drive or you didn't format the drive right. You know this is a work around and work around don't always work. I posted this for the people who come into these forums looking for a fix.

if i sync with ipad using pc will i lose my photos in the ipad phot library?

You won't lose photos that you've taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit or saved from emails/websites - those photos aren't affected by syncing.
If they are photos that were originally synced from a computer and this isn't the same computer, then you should be prompted as to whether you want them replacing - but there is a risk that they will be removed.

It doesn't. Nothing does except for specific graphic files, as was expressed in your other thread. You will need to synch with iTunes to transfer files, or use a cloud based service (which QuickOffice does).

  • Must have to transfer photos to the ipad in order to view them?  Or can I view them externally?

I would like to view photos externally from something such as an SD card, rather than first transferring them to the Ipad.  Is this possible?

There is a camera connection kit which has an SD card reader for copying photos to the iPad, but that will only show the thumbnails of the photos on the card, you need to select and copy them to the iPad before you can see them full-screen.
And if you are copying the photos onto the SD card from your computer (as opposed to it coming direct from a camera) then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them

  • Do you need an apple hard drive to transfer photos safely

I tried importing my photos but while I was dragging the "photo library" it had a stop sign. Why?

Answer to your question....yes, buy an external HD. You do not need an expensive one and you do not need a huge one. I run two 500 GB externals - both attached (occasionally) to my MacBook Pro.

  • Scrolling through photos in PE is a nightmare because you can be looking at or selecting a photo and the next thing you know, your position has been moved far away from the photo you want.  How do I stop this from happening?

Can someone tell me how to prevent the screen from taking off and navigating to a new place while I am viewing photos in PE?

I don't think so.  It's an apple mouse that and under the setup menu it's referred to as a Bluetooth mouse

  • Using a USB drive with a Droid Ultra

Anyone have any experience with this?  Since I've fallen afoul of some backup issues, I bought the recommended stick for my Ultra but can't figure out how to transfer anything but documents.  I downloaded two file managers.  I really thought I was better at this stuff.  And if anyone from Motorola is reading this forum, why did you take away my mini SD port?

    Hi,
I'm going to configure time machine over the next few days, I was wondering if I could set the Western Digital MyBook to use HFS, set time machine to use the drive... but also still be able to manually add files and folders on ther as well.
In other words - if I use Time Machine on the drive, does it mean I can no longer treat the drive as a storage device (I don't like storing my music library directly on a computer as I feel it wastes space).
As Mr. Boyd says, you can do this, but it's best to partition the drive.
Be sure to allocate enough space (see #1 and 5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.)
Also, while you can use TM to back up another partition on the same drive, it's not a good idea to have both the originals and backups on the same physical drive, so be sure you have other backups of your music.

  • Can you download iswifter to your laptop and put it on the ipad

    Pls answer

Any apps that are available in your country's App Store can be downloaded in iTunes on your computer and then synced to your iPad. Or you can download the app to the iPad itself without having to use iTunes - but yes ... You can download it in iTunes then sync it to the iPad.

  • HT1848 How can I add photos to the iPad while not deleting any currently on it? I have some photos from my brother's camera that I can't get again.  How could save them onto my iMac?

I have uploaded photos from my brother's camera while on vacation to my iPad (1).  Now that I wish to add even more photos to the iPad,  iTunes say that it will replace all the photos once I sync again to add from an album on the iMac.
    WHOA.
I'd like to upload the photos to the iMac! HOw can I do that?
How can I add photos from albums on the iMac and not lose the ones I currently have stored onthe iPad.
I cannot find this task addressed in any Help reference.
I do not understand why I cannot make a simple file transfer back and forth.
    Many thanks!

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Can I use a USB drive to install windows 7 on my Macbook Pro?

I currently have the Windows 7 iso on a usb flash drive.  I am running bootcamp 4.0.3, and there is no option to create a windows 7 install disk via usb drive.  Also I cannot download the Windows support software.  Is there a direct download to the drivers, or another version of bootcamp that would allow me to install via usb, like the MBA?  Or is there a way to work around this problem?  I don't have access to any writable CD/DVDs so the usb drive is really my only option currently.

Copy the ISO to your disk and try using that to write the ISO to (another) USB device.
    Instructions for the Air: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4407
download a free iso burning program for Mac (we used SimplyBurns Mac). That program runs you through the necessary steps to properly burn the iso file you need. After doing so, Bootcamp recognized the installation file and everything worked as it should.

If for some reason you downloaded Windows from Microsoft instead of buying a package with a disc, you need to download the ISO version and burn it to a DVD. See this article on downloading the ISO: http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download -links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/ (Make sure you choose the ISO that matches the version you bought).
