Yesterday's Updates (09.11.11) udev/kernel broke usb support

that's right... udev spits out an error on boot i can't see, because it's CLEARED by the login prompt... again. i can't do anything but hit the reset/power off button, because somehow my usb keyboard doesn't do anything. i only know that udev seems to be the culprit because for a fraction of a second i can see a "FAILED" flash up next to it. i don't know if that's the whole story, because for a few days now i'm getting a strange message all over my login prompt saying something in the lines of "Couldn't open input device...". weird, but everything seemed to work until i tried to boot up my archlinux today.
seriously linux world... wtf. this borders on the insane. i just wonder, what i would do now, if i didn't dual boot any more. i now know, why i should never use archlinux in a production environment. i'm just glad it happened on my local machine and not on my remote linux only server. free software or not, something like that just can't happen and i don't care if i get flamed to oblivion for my tone, but this is simply unacceptable.

Yes, it was more less something like that:
I had recently bought a new SSD drive, and I wanted to make it my / partition, so I cloned my old partition into the new SSD disk, and configured grub to use my new / partition.
I didnt give any importance to the fact that grub was still installed in the old drive's MBR. So when I upgraded the kernel, the /boot folder beeing upgraded was the one in the newer SSD partition, but the /boot beeing used on boot was still the one in the old partition.
I just installed grub in the new disk, and changed the config in my mobo to boot on the SSD disk.
Hope I made myself clear!

System less responsive after udev/kernel upgrade

Yeah, another udev/kernel upgrade question. After upgrading udev and the kernel yesterday my terminal is less responsive. For example, scrolling is slow and jerky, and uses an inordanite amount of cpu. ls /usr/bin will cause the cpu usage to spike ~70% which is much higher than normal. I can cause the cpu to go to 100% by scrolling quickly in vim. I do not see this in firefox, however. Scrolling there is responsive and does not use any additional cpu beyond what it took before the update.
I really don't know where to start to troubleshoot this - the only thing I have noticed is that the speedstep-centrino module is not loading any longer.

This is on an ibm thinkpad T40p. I am still getting cpu scaling, but the system is generally less responsive. It may be taking longer to scale up the cpu frequency on demand. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, this worked. Prior to the upgrade I was using the speedstep-centrino module, and loading it in the modules array in /etc/rc.conf. After the upgrade the acpi-cpufreq module was being autoloaded at boot prior to my trying to load the speedstep-centrino module, hence the "device or resource busy" failure when I tried to load the speedstep module. After blacklisting all modules listed in /lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq except the speedstep-centrino, things are working fine. The correct module is loaded at boot time.
Is there a cleaner method to achieve this other than blacklisting all unwanted modules?

Udev kernel 2.6 boot problems and questions

Hello there.. During these days I'm trying to install a new linux kernel. I have the insane Idea of installing an old kernel. I compiled the "new" old kernel and I can't manege to get it to work efficently..
I keep receiving a message this message during the boot.
Failed to start udev Kernel Device Manager
Although I followed the requirements for undev related to the kernel 2.6
Why am I trying to install and older kernel? Well, the my reason is simple: my laptop keyboard that it's so annoying.. Every once and then it's not recognized at boot and it force me to reboot the system even for 4 or 5 times consequintely..
With the kernel 2.6 I never had such problems and so I thought It was worth trying..
Another interesting question that keep coming to my mind is related to the kernel that it's been update after pacman -Syu.
I notice that in /usr/src there is a a new directory eithe the new kernel called linux-3.9.5-1-ARCH, well if I try to build the kernel inside thi directory I get a message
linux-3.9.5-1-ARCH]# make
scripts/Makefile.build:44: /usr/src/linux-3.9.5-1-ARCH/arch/x86/syscalls/Makefile: No such file or directory

The linux-headers are seems to be correctly installed to me...

Arch userspace is too new to survive with an older kernel. This isn't going to end well for you.
If you want your keyboard to function properly, I suggest you file bugs against the relevant parties and work with them to get actually get it fixed rather than go down this bizzare rabbit hole.
edit: even our LTS kernel (3.0.x) is too old for Arch userspace.

You should be able to reconnect to iTunes and then you should see an option to restore to your ipad from your last back up in iTunes.

Yes all contacts checked and getting pop up message that says "your contacts, calendars,& bookmarks are being synced with ICloud over the air, so it isn't necessary to synch these items using itunes. icloud sync can be configured using your devices mail, contacts & calendar settings".
I have that setting as referenced above and only contacts showing are the 9 contacts I renetered manually today after losing all 3oo contacts. I then restored my iphone back to orinail and still no contacts. Please help

It seems that old logic files where it was previously loaded still have the plug in live, but on a new project file it simply isn't there to select and activate.

Not sure about your issue. What did you update from and to? Is ARC still in the plugins/components folder?
I'm an ARC user too. I have it plugged in to Audio Hijack Pro which is set to hijack audio from Logic. This way ARC is after logic and you don't have to remember to bypass the plugin before you bounce.

Here's and update on my problems and here are are some screen shots of the types of problems I've been having since the v5.0.1 update. Keep in mind these are native apps and I have tried the rebuild phone crap many times, nothing helps.
This is screen shot of a what happened when I tried to use my camera one day, both the front and back cameras were all black. I had to power cycle the phone to get rid of this problem. The cameras appeared to be working correctly, I could focus and zoom but it was all black.
Here is an image of what happened when I searched for something in a map. This is after I picked the choice I wanted, the keyboard disappeared but the list didn't. I had to force close the app and restart it for this problem to go away. Who knew five bars on ATT was possible.
And finally this is the messaging app, although you would not know it. I had to return to home screen (after a long pause for it to process the button push) and return to the messaging app. This happens all the time with the messaging app and the notifications sounds drive me crazy. If i'm using the phone, say browsing the web and I get an incoming message its almost 100% of the time the messaging app will screw up. The sound will play at the wrong time or not at all, message will show up in notifications and diasapear in message app or Ill have a problem like this:

IMac 7,1 running 10.5.8 can not access recovery mode, during update to 10.6.8 kernel panic

Good day everybody.
I'm facing next issue. Having iMac v.7,1 running 10.5.8. EFI and SMC firmware update is done.
Trying to update to 10.6.8 thru bootable USB drive. After rebooting showing kernel panic. Made Apple Hardware Test (long one, took around 90 mins) no issues found. Trying booting in Single User Mode, showing "0x7" error.
My attempts to boot in Recovery Mode (cmd+r) completely ignored. Im not sure if there is one.
I tried to Boot in Recovery Mode via Bootable USB with 10.6.8 on it, holding "option" (alt) button, two scenarios, other complete ignore and keep booting to login screen OR again same Kernel Panic.
Guys need some help.
Im ready to change parts, but no idea was that HD or RAM or whatever else.

Recovery mode is only available in Lion (10.7) and later OSs. You can only upgrade to Snow Leopard by booting with an SL disc. You can get it from http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

   Im just looking at the syslogs im getting from the fabrics.
   I noticed alot of warning about :
%DAEMON-5-SYSTEM_MSG: time reset +0.257072 s - ntpd[5315]
%KERN-4-SYSTEM_MSG: set_rtc_mmss: can't update from 49 to 0 - kernel
%KERN-4-SYSTEM_MSG: set_rtc_mmss: nowtime=1339758026, save_control=0x82, save_freq_select=0x72 - kernel
   To me it looks like the kernel complains when the time get updated by NTP. Someone have those entries in logs also?

Would help to have the version of UCSM you're running.
There's an open bug on a similar issue: CSCti71838   - %KERN-4-SYSTEM_MSG: set_rtc_mmss: can't update from 52 to 6 - kernel
It's a general Nexus OS NTP bug, not specific to UCS. At this stage it appears purely cosmetic and does not affect the system. The bug is still in the "new" state. Please monitor the bug toolkit for updates.
Can you also check that the delta between the UCS current time and NTP server are less than 30min?
I'd suggest you open a quick TAC case, provide the output and request your case be linked to this bug. This will increase the priority to have it resolved.

Are you getting a message about an unsupported SIM? It sounds like you had a phone that had been hacked to work on a network other than the one it was locked to and updating it has re-locked the phone to the original network.
Where exactly did you get the phone? What network are you on? If you did not purchase your phone directly from DU or from Etisalat (assuming you are using a carrier in the UAE) or from a carrier in the country where you purchased the phone or directly from Apple, then you got a gray market phone and it was most likely hacked to unlock it in the first place. Most of these gray market, hacked phones come from the US and were originally locked to AT&T.
Only the carrier the phone is locked to can authorize an unlock. If it is locked to AT&T, they will NOT authorize an unlock.
If any of my assumptions are incorrect, I apologize. We need more information, though to make a recommendation.

Well, if you updated to 8.2, then you are living in a different world than the rest of us. 8.1 was just released on Monday.
Do you not have an iCloud or iTunes backup that you can restore to? Have you not been importing your photos to a photo library on your computer?
Maybe you could start from the beginning and we can see if we can help. If you had to restore your device, and you have absolutely no backups, then, I'm afraid you are out of luck. However, if you have backups, or if you have been importing your photos on a regular basis, then probably most of your stuff can be recovered.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit recognizes 8 cores. 32-bit recognizes one physical cpu.
I've had very little trouble in two years. And now I do like Windows 7 but also eager for the RC.
I've been using the latest Nvidia. There is a method to the madness of how to uninstall/delete and install graphics drivers, or madness in the method. The W7 drivers are easier.
Nope. Something else. More sensitive to disk errors. You aren't running a program to boost fans. Something.
And some AV software is more prone to causing trouble. But all you need is a good AV/malware program, and even Norton AV 2009 is acceptable, or Avast or one of the others.
