Yet Another Help! Connecting to Windows 2000

Hello all, I see this is a popular topic. Got the latest 60 gig ipod and my Windows 2000 SP4 with the latest ipod updater and itunes. All of this and the program simply won't recognize my ipod. Windows sees it as a generic usb harddrive and that's it. ipod won't see it nor itunes doesn't. Thought it might be the ipod but I plugged it into my XP laptop and it works seamless. Any hope for Windows 2000 users? I already did the support page process but it didn't provide any help
Any help would be great
thanks

  • HELP Photosmart D7560 Windows 2000

Trying to install a new photosmart D7560 on a windows 2000 platform. The support center has drivers for this but when you try to run it states windows not supported. The cd also won't install and a call to support states it won't run under windows 2000 yet they sell it for windows 2000. Before I bought it I checked the support center and found drivers so it appeared it was supportrd so I purchase it. Now I find out it is false advertising. Any help would be appreciated?? Thanks.

Winamp is a program similar to iTunes that helps you to manage your music on your computer and then sync the music to your device. You can download it for free (just Google Winamp) or there is a Pro version for a small one-off payment. It supports Windows 2000. There's a wealth of information on the website, including a Help section, FAQ and a User Forum. As the program is open-source, it supports plug-ins which modify the software to suit a user's needs - you may be able to find a plug-in in order to use your Zen with it. I use it as I personally prefer it to Creative's own offering and find it'sa powerful but easy program to use.
MediaMonkey is a similar program although I haven't used it personally. Google it and you can download it for free. It has the plug-ins already installed to be able to detect and sync most MP3 players. It is supports Windows 2000 (in fact it supports Windows 95!).
    Hope this helps!

  • Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network

Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network.
My Mac runs lion and the windows desktop runs Windows XP
I have tried for a few hours or so to connect my mac to this printer over a home network.
For your information it does work when connected directly to my mac using a USB Cable.
If there is no soultion could I have help getting the drivers for a Dell All-in-One Photo 926

In most cases you can connect to the Windows shared printer from the Mac. But there is a dependence on the Mac driver being compatible. For many consumer inkjets, the vendor created driver cannot be used for this type of connection so you need to look at alternative drivers, such as Gutenprint or PrintFab. If you can tell us which brand and model of printer you have shared from Windows then we can answer your question with the preferred procedure on the Mac.

  • Error -36 connecting to Windows 2000 Server

I'm trying to connect to a windows 2000 server that appears in my Network browser but I can't authenticate using the Network browser or via smb://.
I have been able to connect in the past no problem and I can login to the server on another machine using my user and password.
    I get two errors:
If I go via Network browser I can click and get a username and password dialog box. When I enter my details and hit return I get - 'The alias (servername) could not be opened because the original could not be found'
If I go via Connect to Server i get a "can't connect to server blah blah (-36 error)" and I can cancel or try again.
I've searched high and low for a solution but can't find anything like this.
I suspect I need to trash some preference or other, like you could do in OS9, but I have no idea where to start with OS X.
    Can anyone help?

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    See the following article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301580
Basically the steps are as follows:
Follow the steps below to configure your computer to use plain text passwords to make SMB/CIFS connections when the specified Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server does not support encrypted passwords. (You must be an administrator to do these steps.)
Make sure that you are not currently connected to any Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers and that you do not have any Samba or Windows-related error messages open.
    Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
At the prompt, type: sudo pico /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
Enter your password when prompted, then press Return again.
You should see an empty file and a "New File" notice at the bottom of the pico window. If you do not see the "New File" notice, this file already exists.
Enter the following into the file so that it appears as follows:
    [default]
    minauth=none
Save the file (press Control-O), press Return, then exit pico (Control-X).
    Type: sudo chmod a+r /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
    Restart your computer.

  • Alias connected to Windows 2000 network share

Using a Mac (10.3.9) I can connect to a Windows 2000 share. I then create an Alias of the share so I don't have to go through the login every time. Unfortunately the Alias 'forgets' and asks for the location of the server or gives me the option to delete it.
This doesn't happen to other macs so I guess it must be a preference file or something like that on the Mac.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Paul

I found a work around for this in another thread. Thank you gnaegi.
    Below is what was posted...
Open Terminal.app from /Applications/Utilities and then enther the following:
mkdir myshare #(do this only the first time)
    mount -t smbfs //[email protected]/sharename myshare
When you work this way you should unmount the share before you log out, shutdown or put the computer to sleep. To do this, open the Termina.app and enter:
    umount myshare
The mounted share is now in your home.

  • How do I connect a Windows 2000 PC desktop to my home network (laptop mac)

    Hi,
Sorry to be such a novice. I have created a wireless network with an airport express. My Macintosh laptop can connect to it without a problem and can access the internet. Next step is I want to connect my desktop PC (running Windows 2000) so that it can also connect to the internet using the wireless connection.
Do I need special equipment so the desktop can find the airport express network? How do I set it up on the PC?
Also - does anyone know the easiest way to connect a TIVO to the home network as well?
    Thanks for any guidance!
    -Lori

Your PC needs to have the ability to join a 802.11b/g compatible network. If it doesn't have that hardware ability, you will need to add a wireless card or wireless adapter.

  • Yet Another YouTube Connection Issue

    Hi,
Long time Mac user, 1st time poster
Yes, I have the (apparently) infamous "I can't get the YouTube URL to work" problem. I have gone thru a number of the related/similar questions already on the ASC but still no joy.
For the past few months I cannot get my MacBook Pro to even see/load Youtube.com while at home using our iMac as a WiFi hub. It is not a video/Flash issue as I can load/view streaming video from many other sites. If I go on the road, Youtube loads & works fine. Our boy's Window's PC loads & runs Youtube fine from the same iMac at home. Wife has the same issue as me with her MacBook. It is only Youtube that will not load as an URL (as well as any imbedded YouTube videos).
The fact that two MacBooks have the identical problem running off the same WiFi connection (plus that the site works when using other hot spots) leads me to suspect its something on the iMac that is not allowing our MacBooks to load this site, but yet an old PC laptop using the same WiFi as us loads YouTube fine.
On the MacBook end I tried the HTML5, the direct IP, clearing all caches (including Library ones), reseting Safari, trying other browsers (Firefox has the identical problem), etc....and still can't see Youtube.com.
Could there be something on the iMac that is blocking this one site? The iMac is o-l-d & is simply used for WiFi.
    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Even the cheapest wireless router will work much better than what you have as a WiFi access point, and over the life of the device you'll probably save enough on electricity to recover the cost.

  • Yet another MBA connection question

I just purchased my MBA in July and it started off working beautifully. Just in the past month or so my internet connection has gotten a bit lousy. My Airport says I have a full connection to the internet yet pages either never load and sit in internet limbo forever or i get a "safari can't open the page - operation could not be completed' message pop up. I bought this computer for it's portability, but no matter how light and thin a computer is made, when it has no internet it is a useless brick. Is there anything i can do to fix this? I am a new mac user so if you can put it in english that would be great, most of this mac-ese is still a bit greek to me!

Do you have any other computers on your wireless network? Are they running ok? Do any of them run Torrent software? Or on your MBA?
Have you taken your MBA to another location with a different wireless router and tried it? was the connection ok from there?
I would try it from another location first - that will narrow down the issue instantly to either your MBA - or something with your home network.

  • 10.3 using afp to connect to windows 2000 share

Here is my problem, I have two machines running 10.3 when I click on go - connect to server and enter my server that I want to connect to it tells me it could not connect to the server becuase the username or password is incorrect. • Yet another release with no Window Switching???

How is it that we still do not have a method for effectively switching between ALL open windows on a Mac?  How?  Command+Tab, switch to an app, dang thing should pop to the front, and not require me to go click on it form some dock or something.  WAY too many keystrokes to go to a mission control of some desktop layout animator just to get to the last window you had up.  To me it doesn't matter that its a Linux thing, a Microsoft thing or whatever - its a "thing" that many seem to expect and want, and has still not been delivered. Any idea why?
    Thanks.

I don't know if this helps, but the keyboard shortcut to switch in an app to the next window of the same app is ( Command ) + ( ~ ).
    ( Command ) + ( ~ )
Also if you have multiple windows open in an app and you want to switch to a specific window you can ( Command ) + ( Tab ) and then while still holding ( Command ) down press the ( Up Arrow ). It will allow you to switch between the windows of said app.
( Command ) + ( Tab ) Then while holding ( Command ) Press ( Up Arrow), No longer need to hold ( Command ) / ( Left or Right Arrows ) to switch windows ( Return ) to select.
Sorry if my explanation is confusing.

  • Help connecting to Windows Small Business Server?

Is there a document that does a step-by-step for adding a Mac to a Windows domain on Small Business Server 2003? Microsoft has a two-year-old document that doesn't seem to apply to Mac OS X 10.4.8.

Note both of these give a detailed instruction on how to do it the apple recommended way - that is with an OS X server as an OD master and a Win2k3 server running AD. As such youre going to have to do alot of tuning and figuring out if you dont have an OS X server at your disposal.

  • Help connecting to windows please!

    Hi,
This may be very simple for you, however I am not a windows user and am posting for a friend.
I think the problem is that she is getting an error message when trying to install the latest version of i tunes as she does not have windows xp sp2.
    Two questions i suppose.
    1. Is the sp2 a free update for xp or would she have to buy this.
    2. Can she use the xp version she has and use an earlier version of itunes to activate her ipod touch.
    TIA

no, updating the SP will not cost anything, and is highly recommended, especially since it includes a lot of security updates. actually, the latest SP available is 3, so she should definitely at least upgrade to SP2!
    *Windows system requirements*
    *PC with USB 2.0 port*
*Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later*
    *iTunes 8 or later*
unless she has SP2 and iTunes 8, she won't be able to activate it.

  • Yet another slow connection issue

My broadband speed is totally unreliable - and from a quick scan of the forums it seems I'm not the only one!
Much the same as numerous other posters, I'm paying for up to 8meg broadband but typically getting far less than that.  Being in a rural location i appreciate that the local phone exchange probably isn't the most high tech facility in the world, but we're only 2 miles away from it and the speed tester has recorded up to 7meg on occasion.  Today, and this seems to be an increasingly frequent occurence, the speed tester says "your IP profile is 250k".
We had an engineer out 3 weeks ago for the same problem but he could find no faults at the house, said there were no reported faults on the local exchange and the morning before he arrived the IP profile had already been reset to a more usable level.  Rang the call centre again today and after wasting about an hour trying to explain the problem then waiting for him to check things and call me back, then explaining the same thing over again, absolutely nothing has been resolved and they want to send out another engineer.
I have a couple of very simple questions which the customer services team seem incapable of answering:
    1. what is the reason for my IP profile being set so low?
    2. what needs to be done to fix it now?
    3. what needs to be done to stop it happening again?
I don't think the guy I spoke to actually knows what an IP profile is, let alone how to resolve a problem with it.  What is the point of a technical support helpline when the staff quite obviously have no technical knowledge?!

Have spent another hour of my life on the phone to BT helpline this afternoon.
Apparently the reason we hadn't received the call back yesterday was due to a "technical issue" at their end and the request had not been passed on to the engineer team.
Having gone through exactly the same conversation and process as on Tuesday, the helpline chap has run his tests and when pressed told me that he could determine no faults on the line.  An engineer might be able to determine other faults though so he would like to book an appointment for an engineer to call.
Unfortunately, even though I've waited 2 days for this already because they didn't pass on the engineer request the other day, they can't do anything to prioritise the call so I've now got to wait up to another 48hrs for somebody to ring me to book the appointment.  As its Thursday now, that probably means that it could Monday before that happens and therefore probably the middle of next week before the engineer actually gets to the house.  So another week of broadband that is barely faster than dial up.

  • Leo cannot connect to WIN 2000 SP4 Server via AFP!

    Dear folks,
I set up an PowerMac G4 MDD as a first Leopard-Test Machine for our production environment. Mac OS X 10.5 was installed on a clean HD without any old stuff on it.
My serious problem ist that this Mac cannot establish a connection to a WIN2000 Server (SP 4) via AFP.
I am able to enter cmd-K, server IP, and in the following dialogue login and password.
Instead of showing the available shares I get an error -41 (unknown error) an should contact the server admin.
Interestingly, I have absolutely no probs to connect via AFP to another Win2000 machine with SP 2 installed.
Also I tried several manipulations on the appleshare plist file I found here and in other forums. With no luck.
I have no idea anymore what else to try.
With Tiger and Panther everything is fine.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Regards,
    Stefan

I have not been able to reproduce error -41, but I have been able to reproduce a failure to connect on Windows 2000 SP4.
On the windows server, make sure you are using either 'Microsoft Only', 'Apple Encrypted', or 'Apple Encrypted or Microsoft'.
You can check this by right clicking on 'My Computer', selecting 'Manage', right clicking on 'Shared Folders' under 'System Tools' and selecting 'Configure File Server for Macintosh'. It will be on that first screen that comes up.
If you just MUST use unencrypted passwords, or can't access the NT server, you can set the following and it seems to work fine.
Err:~ eb$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afpcleartextwarn" -bool YES
Err:~ eb$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afpcleartextallow" -bool YES

  • ISW NT connector on windows 2000?

I am installing identity synchronization for windows 1, on a directory server (5.2) that is replicated with another directory server (5.1). I may not upgrade the other directory server. It's part of a software product, and we won't have their support anymore if we upgrade subcomponents of their product.
Password synchronization with windows NT works fine, because changes in password on the NT servers are written to the for me accessible directory server which replicates them to the inaccessible directory server.
For AD however, the password is checked through the Directory Server Plugin (when the dspswvalidate attribute is true), and i can not install that plugin on the inaccessible directory server.
Is there a way to install the NT connecter on Windows 2000 servers anyway?
    Thanks,
    Willem
