Yet another kernel panic...

Until I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I had never heard of a kernel panic, much less experienced one, much less several times a week.
There's no predicting when one will happen; sometimes I go for days with no panic, then there are a couple a day.
I took my early '09 iMac to the Genius Bar and the young lady ran various diagnostics and said "hmmm" a lot and finally declared that she thought my aftermarket Bella video editing keyboard was at fault.  So, I went back to the tiny little Mac keyboard and the original mouse and the occurence of kernel panics...slowed down...a bit...but they still happened.  (FWIW... the Bella keyboard and my Logitech trackball are back in the mix.  Also, it doesn't seem to matter whether the external drives are hooked up or not.)
So here go the hieroglyphics:

Please, somebody who just loves deciphering this stuff, gimme some insights!  I really don't want to have to do a clean install!
Thanks!

Kappy:
Thanks for the quick response.  I'm afraid WYSIWYG.  This was copied right from the screen after the most recent panic; the info in the System Diagnostics Log is the same.  Let's try one from a couple of days ago with more stuff...

3 usb hard drives, one firewire device, usb camera, as well as a zoom location recorder.
4gb of 3d party ram, as well.
I had tried removing the 3d party ram and reinstalling the original 1gb that came with the

  • Another kernel panic saga

    So to briefly recap....
We had an isolated grey screen episode a few months back which seemed to be triggered by a long session of work during which the printer was unplugged while still powered up. After rebooting in safe mode everything settled down to normal.
More recently it happened again after another full day of work (normal usage is normally just evenings). Once again, boot up in safe mode ok, and back to normal. Grey screen again after recharging an iPod overnight. Which made me think we either had a heat issue, or a bad USB socket (I did have to shift from one port to another a while ago, as one would no longer connect iPod properly).
So I went to see a genius at out nearest Apple store on Saturday. Based on the fact that the machine will boot up to the install disc, their advice was that it was a software issue on the hard drive, and recommended a reinstallation (preferably a complete wipe). And to come back for a replacement hard drive if that didn't fix it.
I am chicken. So after making some backups I did an archive install last night. No difference.
Wife needed to work at home today. So she went through the whole sequence including an archive install again this afternoon. Still no difference.
I remain sceptical about the diagnosis. The issue seems to be getting more persistent.
I have booted to install disc, rerun disc repair, rebooted to install disc and rerepaired permissions. All of which showed nothing.... the local genius cited this as evidence to support theory of corrupt data on HD which disk utility would not recognise and hence not report or act on
    Should I....
    a) suck it up and do a wipe and install
    b) get a second opinion..... any ideas what else could be amiss if HD is not the problem
    All suggestions gratefully received

For what it's worth the last bit of the kernel panic reads as follows(ish)

  • Another Kernel Panic....

I have recently have been having Kernel Panics relating to my bluethooth, however, today, I got another one that I have never received before.
I had left my macbook in sleep mode for about an hour, when I returned, it would not wake from sleep mode, and holding the power button did nothing. I noticed that my macbook was extremely hot underneath (battery, etc...). I could not get it to turn on. Finally I inserted the power adapter and held the power button a couple of times, before it finally booted up. Can anybody explain what happened...Here is the Panic...thanks in advance for the help...

from the log file, i don't know if the general public could unscramble the source of this panic...usu. the log would show the source. you could call apple up and see if they can decode it...although i doubt that would happen.

  • Another Kernel Panic- translation please

The only things plugged into the computer are the apple monitor, apple keyboard/logitech mouse USB combo, cable ethernet connection.
All hardware checked out by Apple tech testing beyond the Apple Hardware CD methond. No hardware problems to report

There's nothing specific in the log entry you've posted, although I believe it's not the complete panic log entry.
However, were I you the first thing I would do is replace the keyboard and mouse with the original ones that came with the computer and uninstall the LogiTech software drivers. Then boot the computer into safe mode and see if the panics cease.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.

Having a Problem with this (and also with mkinitrd). This is kernel 2.6.17.1.
    I dont get it.
    Blind
    BTW: /boot  is  /dev/hda1

Sorry phrakture, you are right. Not enough information in the first post.
First of all, let me say it is a SMP machine:
dual Athlon MP 1900, 1GB RAM.
The panic appears after LILO booted the ramdisk and he wants to mount the root filesystem as far as I understand it.
As I am at work, I cannot provide you with the whole kernel message. As I remember, kinit complains about not being able to mount/find the root partition (which is why I added the rootfstype flag in the append). This did not really improve the situation (although now it stated that it mounted root)  but at the end it says:
kernel panic: kinit::attempt to kill init.
I will provide you with the full message as soon as I am home.
I have the mkinitcpio.conf, because it is the same as on my laptop:
    # vim:set ft=sh
    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array. For instance:
    # MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES=""
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes, into the CPIO image, and additional
    # binaries a given user may wish. This is run first, so may
    # be used to override the actual binaries used in a given hook.
    # (Existing files are NOT overwritten is already added)
    # BINARIES are dependancy parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES=""
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in anyway. This is useful for config files.
    # Some users may wish to include modprobe.conf for custom module options,
    # like so:
    # FILES="/etc/modprobe.conf"
    FILES=""
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'modload' may be used in place of 'udev', but is not recommended
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    # This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    # No raid, lvm, or encrypted root is needed.
    # HOOKS="base"
    # This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
    # work as a sane default
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
    # This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    # No autodetection is done.
    # HOOKS="base udev ide scsi sata usb filesystems"
    # This setup assembles an ide raid array with an encrypted root FS.
    # Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H raid' for more information on raid devices.
    # HOOKS="base udev ide filesystems raid encrypt"
    # This setup loads an LVM volume group on a usb device.
    # HOOKS="base udev usb filesystems lvm"
    HOOKS="base udev ide filesystems"
So nothing special. I am using the same kernel and a very similar setup on my laptop (/boot is on the first partition) - except they are reiserfs: No problem with it there.
Do I have to install any extra software to use mkinitcpio/kinit/etc. that is not resolved in the dependencies? I am running the same Arch system on my Laptop since one year, so maybe I have some stuff on here, that is not on the other machine, which I only installed recently (and is only using current/extra).
    Thank you for your help,
    Blind

Thank You so much for helping me out

Well, this isn't really an AppleScript problem, but it looks like you might have a problem with the AirPort hardware in the laptop or the driver for it might be corrupted.
If I were you, I'd probably reinstall the OS (using "Archive and Install" option or BACKUP everything and do a clean install). If that doesn't solve it, I'd take it in to the Apple Store or some other authorized Apple repair joint to get it fixed.

    Thanks for replying.
    To answer your questions:
    1) Nothing new or changed
    2) I have not disconnected my Firewire drive because it's where I store my iTunes library.
    3) I'm not sure. Sometimes I have a few programs open, sometimes only one.
    4) It froze (no kernel panic) this evening while I was using Firefox, iTunes, Thunderbird, and while changing a file name in Finder.

  • Another Kernel Panic...Reason?

    Hi guys,
I just bought my MacBook Pro a few days ago and started to used it with joy! but I left him for a while (so it went to sleep mode) and when I came back, wake it up made it have several Kernel Panic in a row...
I restarted the beast several time and it repetitely shut down by itself.
I've seen other people posting copy of the panics.logs file, so I copy it here for the two last errors.

Does someone know what could happend? It seems that it just started to occur since I made the update to Mac OSX 10.4.9 but I might be wrong and it could simply be the first time I left the mac go to sleep...
Any help would be very appreciated!

    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Guys...
following my local Apple shop I had my MBP sent back to the technical lab. There, the guys diagnozed a problem with the HDD and did replace it.
Then the mac came back to me as new.
The problem now is that after 3 days of normal usage (without any problem) I'm having Kernel Panics again. After waking up from sleep (whole night long) the mac reboots (showing the transparent message in 4 languages telling me that I need to restart). If I restart immediately, the laptop just restarts endlessly (showing me the same transparent message everytime).
If I let it rest for an hour or so, it works again (at least it seems since I'm writing down this message).
Any idea of what could cause this???
Here is a copy of the last three Kernel Panics:

  • Yet another kernal panic issue

    I'm having kernal panics too....
My iMac starts up with no startup chime, and then it starts up OK, but then when it gets to the part when the login window comes up, its just a blue screen, and every 3-5 seconds the little "startup spinny thingy" comes up for about 1/5 of a second. I call it the blue-screen of death. I'm pretty sure its the memory, and I'm preforming all the tasks apple says to do on the support page. I've heard of people saying that buying a new keyboard or slapping the mac would work, but it doesn't for me. Usually I just reboot in safe-mode and all goes away, but now I can't boot up in safe mode OR hear a startup chime.

Please read this in conjunction with my responce to your other post.
Have you tried disconnecting all external devices (standfast the Apple mouse and keyboard) and seeing how that goes? You may also wish to try removing the SODIMM RAM and Airport card if present). Some questions for you:
Have you added any hardware/software recently?
What does the Apple Hardware Test disk report? (Here's a more extensive RAM checker.)
Do you have another Mac/External Firewire Hard Disk (they can help troubleshoot).
    cheers

  • Kernel panics & grey debug screen at startup

Tiger (10.4.10) on a 2 GHz Mac mini (Intel) and Airport as well as IPv6 disabled.
Not sure which torrent client I installed first but I think it was Transmission and everything was fine. Then I installed Azureus on the advise of a friend and started getting kernel panics. Switched back to Transmission and KPs continued. Soon I started getting them with just running Safari or even Firefox.
Next there was a Mac OS upgrade (10.4.11 and a couple other things) and the machine would not even start up anymore. Always got a grey debug screen with msg to press powerbutton.
Tried doing an archive and install and it failed twice.
Tried doing a clean install (OS only) on external 30GB USB 2.0 HD and it failed as well.
Apple Support and Apple store were clueless.
At least the genius was able to boot with their troubleshooting HD and run Disk Warrior which found a couple minor issues and I was able to see that my data was stull there. Unfortunately the 30gb HD was too small to copy my user folder (86gb).
Went and bought an external 320gb firewire disk and tried to do a clean install and it failed.
Called Apple again and suspected bad DVD media. They sent replacement disks and they failed as well.
Ran Apple Hardware Test and it found bad memory (?) with 2x 1GB Corsair sticks. I even tried them individually. That memory has worked since August 2007 until I started seeing the kernel panics in December. What are the odds of both SODIMMs going bad at the same time ? Could a bad app cause memory to go bad ? I doubt it.
with 2 GB Corsair memory: 4MEM/4/40000000:2c02fd60
Swapped original 2x 512 MB Apple sticks in and AHT found another error.
with 1 GB Apple memory: 4SNS/1/40000000:TAOP
From other forum posts I found that 4MEM usually indicates a memory or system board issue while 4SNS seems to indicate a sensor issue, but that could have been due to unplugged (termal?) cable in front of mini due to the need to swap memory in and out for testing.
    What gives ?
I was however, able to install now on external FW disk and copy my user folder to it as well.
So this indicates a problem with 3rd party mem but there may be something else wrong with mini system board or Apple mem as well.
    TX

    ::UPDATE::
Okay, I eventually got my iMac to start up successfully, without crashing after logging in. But I still thought there was something wrong so I booted from the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my computer and I got yet ANOTHER Kernel Panic! Here is what it said:

  • IMac G4 800MHz - Kernel Panics and Blank Screen At Startup

Two days ago, I was listening to iTunes, just browsing the internet, and suddenly I got a kernel panic. Yesterday, the exact same thing happened. After that, I got frustrated and just left it alone until today. When I attempted to turn on my iMac G4 800 MHz today, the screen does not turn on and the mouse does not even receive power. The only thing that appears to receive power is the power LED on the display.
I experimented with it for a few minutes and found that if I unplug the power cord for a few minutes, plug it back in, and turn the computer back on, the screen will turn on. However, as soon as I log in, I get another kernel panic, and it goes back to the screen not turning on.
    Any suggestions?

  • Kernel Panics Are Increasing

I've had a high number of Kernel Panics appear within the last 6-8 weeks on my dual Power Mac G5 running Tiger (10.4.11 Build 8S165). I've had my PPC Mac for years and don't recall this many panics ever in a short window of time. Today, I suffered yet another Kernel Panic and had panics happening daily Nov 23, 24, 25th.
Just in my observation, it seems to have gotten worse with the last Apple security update for PPC users. As well, panics occur when I wake my Mac from sleeping after having left Firefox running. I have no Energy Saver Sleep settings enabled and the Options set is to "Allow power button to sleep the computer."
About 2 weeks ago, I encountered this error on startup where my login window would not appear:
"*getty: /dev/console: Operation not supported by device*"
I went through the battery of troubleshooting that the Apple Support site advised, from booting numerous times in safe mode & single-user mode, booting from my original Tiger DVD to run Disk Utility, running fsck -fy, resetting PRAM & NVRAM, repaired my permissions many times, repaired my disk, disconnected all peripherals and insert them one by one. None of these steps resolved it until I performed an Archive and Install (Preserve Users and Network Settings). I have since performed all necessary updates since the reinstall. I did not reset the Cuda/PMU.
Here is the Kernel Panic experienced this morning prior to this post. Does anyone know what this panic means? Btw, I have read a link that someone posted to another site on breaking down the panic. However, that example is not my experience, so it was not much help to me.
    Thanks.
