Yet another Mac Book Pro (A1211/2.33 GHz) freeze problem

Hi everyone,
I have yet another freeze mystery, if people fancy having a crack at it.
I had this notebook for about 4 and a half years and it served me well until 2 months ago. It is a 15' MBP from December 2008 (A1211) with a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM.
Now I constantly get lags or freezes while I am using it.It manifests itself via the beachball and a frozen screen. First, I thought it was the hard drive but I replaced it with a tested new one and I still get the same behaviour. The reason I thought it was the HD is that it seems to freeze often when there was a lot of access to HD or memory. For example, firefox would cause a freeze quite often when it was trying to access the cache or history. I get the same behaviour when trying indexing my music for the genius feature. Often when I close applications, it will halt the system for about 2 minutes.
I think the number of lags also correlates with temperature. I am pretty sure that the notebook's heat diffusion properties has deteriorated strongly over the past year as it seems to be using the fans a lot more extensively. The heatsink seems to get really hot these days as well. So my next step would be checking the thermal paste on the heat sink. Before I am going to do that, I want to consider any remaining options as dismantling the laptop up to the heatsink is a bit of a pain.
My gut feeling would be that it has to do either with the memory or maybe some 'bridge' that transfers the data between HD, GPU, CPU and memory. I am aware that bridge is the wrong word and I am simplifying the architecture of the mainboard too much, but I am sure you get what I mean. The data rate between some of those is inhibited.
The reason why I am saying some is that often the system seems overwhelmed by the amount of commands, just sits there and then resumes executing all of them as it had taken a break. This can be easily seen when streaming video in a web browser. I often get the beach ball and my whole screen freezes, but the movie, or at least the sound, keeps running in the background. After a while it usually resumes and shows the movie at the current playing position. Sometimes it doesn't recover, not even after 30 minutes and I have to switch it off.
I hope I provided enough information for you guys to have a think about this.
Any help in this matter would be gratefully appreciated.

Before re-installing the operating system, which might also work, I found this article helpful:
http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Fix-Spod-How-To-Fix-A-Spinning-Pinwheel -Of-Death.htm
I've followed the directions since they seem to make sense and am waiting for the next Pinwheel of Death. They seem to be saying the same thing you are Chris, but ascribe the problem to 'permissions' which are fixable (gasp) via the OS disc utility.

I just brought my Mac book pro 15" 2.3 ghz on 12 september 2012 not even one week I've used it the battery cannot be charged.
the upper corner right says it's plugged in but not charging.
How do I solve this I'm going to London the next week! (23/09/2012)
I need this replaced or repaired ASAP. Is tat possible? It hasn't being used for even a week and it's already cause such a trouble? Is this what Mac is?

    Hi Steve,
I just got back from the apple service centre. I must say they treat us pretty bad and raising voices and stuffs.. If you wanna question or doubt on such service, I've recoded everything in my mobile and iPad. The company I brought from is TECHNOCRATS in 1Borneo Hypermall. The service centre headquarters is DIGITAL FORTRESS SDN. BHD. located in Damai Point.
    Here's what happened..
I went in the service centre and disappointingly, no one entertain us (my boyfriend and I).. we stood there for a few minutes. :(
Till we enquire for administration and problems. A girl said she doesn't know much. She gave me a number to her superior named Charles. She asked us to contact him. Then we asked "aren't you suppose to call your superior regarding to this matter?". "it's this the part of your profession to call Charles? Why is it my job to find him?"
Soon the lady calls him and she passed the phone to my partner.
Wow, there was raising voices and stuffs in the phone. So my partner asked him to come up to the office and discuss this matter since he was jst downstairs. For your information this is the second visit of the day, so we visited the second time after lunch hour which is 2:15pm
Well it was dramatic, Charles with his raising voices and terrible attitude for a greeting. So he straight forward blamed us for not putting the mbp down to the registration. (FYI no one there bothers to serve us for the 1st and 2nd visit). For my concern, this mbp is not cheap. And how can I just put down my laptop and leave? Without any rational reasons.
Long story short, I told him my problem and he said he will make a diagnosis and will return the answer to me tomorrow probably before noon.
Here's what I'm upset about. I enquire about the genius bar. He kinda felt offended and told me tat only apple store has genius bar! Im just asking you don't néed to be so loud on this.. I'm still very new to Mac products and stuffs.
Now that I have sent in my Mac book pro to diagnosis with the cables and everything. Hope to get the answers soon and hope it wasn't really bad since it was new.
Now its pretty much scarred on my side about Mac's Brand. I just wanted a reasonable solving problem and yet I get negative feedbacks from the service centre. Is this how it should end? I'm still pretty upset right now.
    Any suggestions for me? Please?
    Worried,
    Shirley

  • Why Should I Buy Another Mac Book Pro

I purchased a Mac Titanium Powerbook back in the day when it was so fresh and new, big bucks.  Within 2 years the logic board began freezing all the time.  It was fixed with big bucks again.  2 years later the laptop began doing the same thing, freezing up and so I went along with the extremely annoying issue.
When the Mac Book Pro came out I decided to start fresh with a new computer, with big bucks of course.  Guess what happened 2 years later as i lived in another town, took it to another Mac repair place.  They told me the Logic board was dead.  So after big bucks I replaced it, so rediculous.  And now, 2 years later it is freezing again, not only that, I can't connect to my wifi anywhere I want to in my own place with my own internet.  I have to walk to certain spots in my place so my Mac Book Pro will communicate with my router that always worked with the new Mac Book Pro since day 1.  But, after these updates Apple puts out to better the system, at some time it borked my internet connection.  Reading these boards and seeing similar problems with other Apple users and seeing there is no solution is decerning.  Then seeing a new security update from Apple about detecting virus popups and nothing addressing it's wifi issue is the last straw for me.
My wife bought a Toshiba 4 years ago and we put win7 on it when it came out since vista is disgusting.  There isn't one problem with her laptop, nothing.  And you can run still get on the internet with a laptop that runs win98.  I cant even load a page when I get on my Mac Titanium Powerbook, that has to be connected to the internet via ethernet cable becuase detecting wifi on that is something that never occured, even though it should.
I am on the fence, Mac vs PC?  Pricey vs Something that breaks less?
So why should I buy another Mac computer?

I don't think the experiences of a place where people discuss problems is necesarily an indicator of the overall populace using the product. Just as if you went to a hospital, you could not ascertain the relative overall health of everyone who is not in the hospital.
Statistically, you are probably an ideal candidate for a MBP, as it is extremely unlikely that you would have another problem of similar character. That is of course assuming that nothing you are doing is cutting short the life expectancy of your computers.
I am on my 4th MB variant, and have only had one major issue, which was handled terrifically by Apple. However, I am not entirely without worry that an electromechanical device nmade by humans can't fail. That is why I also have had AppleCare on everything.
But we differ in one great respect, I think. I figure that any computer i buy has a maximum life expectancy of 3 years. I have never used a computer longer than that, and I am routinely trading up within that time period. This time will be different though. I've only had my MBA for a little over 6 months, and It can't come any sooner that I'll move to the new one in about a month, if it nears my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the value you place on longevity. But I really think that unless your activities are especially harsh in a physical manner on your computers, then it is unlikely you will have the same experience once more. I do beleive that the current units are as good or better than anything Apple has had in their notbooks, in terms of quality.
But it is your decision,, that should be based on ALL facts and not just the experiences of those who visit a help forum.

  • Mac Book Pro Wifi Data Locked up/freezes.

Hello, i have had this problem now for about 3 months.  I have tried to search for the issue but i may be missing some key terms so if this is a known topic or somone can provide a link to a solution i would love it.
So i primarly use my MBP on wifi in the home, i have an ipad on wifi, pc laptop on wifi and a hardwired TV.  Sometimes while on the computer all of a sudden i will stop getting data from the internet, usualy i notice because a webpage loads about half way or does not load at all then i get the thinking wheel in the web browser.  If i turn off the wifi card, wait about 15 seconds then turn it back on it always comes right back on and away i go.
For some details  It is a Mac Book Pro 8,2 16gig ram, OS10.6.8  all security and software is up to date.  I recently put a new hard drive in the machine and use the migration assistant to transfer everything across from the old one but with a fresh install of the OS.  The problem existed before and after the HDD swap.  I use Chrome as the primary browser, but it is not application spesfic, mail and safari both loose the network data as well.  I do not have a lot of large downloads, 90% of my network use is e-mail, and web no bit torrents or streaming on this computer.  Finaly to see if it was the router while the laptop is locked up the other devices on wifi and hard lined all still work fine.  Also according to the laptop i still have 100% wireless strength and connection, i dont have any other wifi networks so i can not try to switch to another one, the only fix i have found is to click "turn airport off" wait a second, then back on.  Also time does not seem to be a part of it, i can have the machine running all day for several days no issues, then it goes down, or i just open it up and in an hr it locks.
To me i hate to hear that it is a bad network card in the computer, but if anyone knows if there is maybe a setting or somthing i can reset on the network card that may be setting me up on a "timed lease" of my ip address, thanks for the help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Boot from your original install DVD and run Repair Disc and Repair Permissions, this might then allow you to Boot as normal and have all your data intact.
If not then you need to re-install the OS from that same DVD but select 'Archive Install' and it will preserve your User data and Applications.

  • Mac Book Pro 2011 (Installed with X Yosemite) Problem. Help!

I tried to start up my Mac Book Pro and it took me to the screen where you choose the user. I click on my account and put in my password. A grey loading bar appears below. It gets about a third of the way there and then the whole computer shuts down. Just shuts off like I pushed the power button. So I tried to Safe Boot but my computer doesn't seem to recognize it as a Safe Boot for when I hold shift upon it restarting, it just takes me back to the "choose your user" interface. So then I tried the Utilities screen which I was able to open. I tried to repair my "MacintoshHD" Disk (The top one in the left column) and it said that it was unable to fully verify the disk. I kept trying and this fixed the problem (I think?) since it stopped saying it couldn't verify it anymore. I went back to the "choose your user" screen and still no dice. What should I do? Is there any way to save my files on that account? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

My Mac tech friend tells me there is a pending class action lawsuit about this problem. So stay tuned.

  • Mac Book Pro - Mouse and Track Pad Freeze

I left my mac book pro asleep for a few hours, everything had been working fine. When I returned it would not wake up so I restarted it.
It makes the chime and comes to the password page as per normal. Then I cannot move the mouse and the keyboard does not work. Also impossible to select Caps lock (light does not come on)
    Things I have tried:
    PRAM
    Safe Start Up Mode
    Attaching external keyboard and mouse
Restarting holding down ctrl, apple and power key
No luck with any of the above.
    Any ideas.
    Thanks in advance!

It's not completely clear if you are using an external USB mouse. Some people use the term "mouse" for the clicker bar so I want to make sure I understand how you are set up instead of guessing.
If you are not using an external mouse, remove the battery and inspect it for bulging or other deformation. That can put upward pressure on the underside of the trackpad assembly and take it down, often taking the built-in keyboard with it.

  • MAC BOOK PRO 17 Build 2009 Random Freezing

    Hello people!
I was working with my mac at work editing some videos when suddenly everything just stop working and i had to turn it off only by holding the power button... Mouse froze, keyboard not responding But i noticed backlight was responding if it helps....
I have this problem over a year now from time to time and didn't gave too much attention to it until i lost 2 hours of video editing work. I always thought that my running applications were the problem so i called apple asking various questions and positive answers on how do i diagnose a problem when i see one...
Anyway.. After i called on the second time apple they said that it would be a good idea to format it ...
I formated my drive and installed only the MAC OSX and update to the latest version and also installed iLife only and finally i started to transferring my data back to the system when it froze again... I spend 4 hours on searching on apple site on how to reset the PRAM and NVRAM... SO i did...
Note: After i Reset the PRAM and NVRAM takes a long time (Weeks) until it freezes again and it happens unexpectedly.
Right now just came back from the service department and i was told that my mac has passed all the tests they did...
If my mac has passed all the test how come it freezes???
So if any suggestions or solutions please let me know people... I have only 19 days left on my warranty and its my first mac and i like it.... But i don't know why its freezing... Read the details below on what hardware i'm using if it helps...
    Regards.

Updated News.... Or a novel if i may say....
    Hello everyone!
Unfortunately they didn't locate the problem but its pretty sure that is hardware related...
For me it was a lot of trouble driving 45 miles maybe more to find an authorized service center when i ended up wasting my time really...
Funny thing is when i took the laptop at their store "Not Official Apple Store" it crashed once with a grey screen after i tried to transfer a video from my Nokia phone over the USB Cable but it looks like they run the same test i was doing for the past 5 months... "idiots they were having the laptop their sitting rather than using it" BUT IT LEFT AN ERROR CODE
They didn't even bother to check the event log and i had to find a friend who has good skills to check it out for me so i went to their shop and took it away before they do some more serious damage to the computer and my temper...
    Anyway! :s
I took it back home and my friend was surfing the net with the event log code to see what message i was getting at the last moment i gave my MBP to them and crashed when i plugged the phone.
We turn on the laptop normally!!! and found the code that is written below BUT AFTER FEW MOMENTs THE LAPTOP RESTARTED AND MACOSX COULD NOT BOOTUP!!!! So i lost all of the error report :s sorry
" cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003 " what the only thing he could remember SO!!!
This is the first time i get this error message in my one year of use and 3rd time formatting the drive so i can find a possible solution to this problem...
Finally i spend almost 2 hours with a very good apple care assistant on the phone from greece, talking & trying avery possible step and solution to boot mac osx. Finally i format my System Again...
Also bought Apple care just in case that i highly recommend that you do the same...
So im closing this topic for now, but im still not marking it as answered until i get a prober answer to this problem from Apple Official Service Center and share it with you all.
I will travel to UK soon and i will ask them to check the hardware from top to bottom until they find something because Software Testing will not show anything no matter how many time you repeat it!!!!...
    cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003
Any reply to my novel would be grateful about that error code
    Regards

  • Mac book pro 13 (v8.1) airport connection problem snow leopard

    Hi!
my MBP 13 (8.1). on Snow OS. It's 2 day old and I have a serious bug!  It was working perfect until batery power down... now won't connect to ANY WIRELESS. I can't turn on and off the airport on my laptop!
My network is an airport extrem (7.5.2). I own an older MBP (1.1) work perfect! I changed all possible setting of the airport (rebust network, 5ghz, 2.4ghz, 801a/b/n, password/no password, default setup, reset, etc...) nothing work for the new laptop anymore, and i did restart, change airport setting, bla bla bal...!
I will try to reset the 2 tings talked over other threads (SCM and PRCAM or something like so...), but ****, it's brand new, don't feel like reset a 2 day old computer... I've been using mac over 20 years, profesionnaly, and now i'm getting despointment... and big time!
    Thx!
    Mr Uneasy

If it's not your hard drive and it's not your system that leaves either your user account or your connection. But that wouldn't account for trash error messages.
Have you tried repairing your usser account by
Booting up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
From the menu bar choose Utilities then select Terminal.
    At the prompt type resetpassword
    Press return
The Password reset utility will launch (do not reset password)
Instead, click your Mac hard drive.
Then from the drop-down select the user account you want to repair. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac.
If it's not that then you need to go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and remove your Login Items and test. I know the problem is that it's intermittent but you'll need to run w/o them for a while or in a fresh test account to see.

When i tried inplace upgrade it errored out with a message that I cannot upgrade. I wiped the disk clean using Disk utility and tried booting with the 10.6 DVD. Hey, Mac geniuses and wizards - what is going wrong with my macboo

Have you ever waited and let it do it's thing? I was ready to force mine to quit the other day after waiting 2-3 minutes, and all of sudden, it shut down. I restarted it and then shut it down again. This time it was normal.
Try this yet before doing an Archive and Install.
    1. Boot from your system CD, run Disk First Aid from your Disk Utility and repair your permissions.
    2. Use a utility like Onyx to clean your system cache out, including your kernel cache. The computer will restart slow right after that, but I keep rebooting the computer about 3 times in a row, and I'm back up to speed.

  • Running M/S Access on a Mac Book Pro

My wife is starting college and needs a laptop.  Her first courses include a basic computer class (she won't be a computer major in any way, just wants to know how to better use them).  Her prof says any machine must run all the M/S products, including  Access.  We want to buy another Mac Book Pro (naturally).  I know it will easily run all the M/S apps except Access.  Is there any good way to make Access run on the Mac Book correctly (and satisfy the Prof).  I hate to get a PC just for this one rqmnt and be stuck with it for the rest of her college time.

You really haven't much in the way of options.
Install Windows on the Mac and use it to run Access.
Try Libre Office which is suite similar to Office 2007 and includes a database module similar to Access.
Determine what the database needs of the course will be to determine if some other Mac database program could be used in lieu of Access.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
    6. Last is Q.  Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs.  It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.
