Yet another macbook not starting.

So... I was uninstalling some programs (I had a ubuntu parallel desktop running on my macbook that I was deleting because I wanted to memory to run windows on bootcamp for school) and I restarted my computer and now it will only show to the apple logo and the spinning ball thing. I tried holding option-command-r-p and the bootup disk and no luck. I am going to take time off work/school and bring it into the mac store asap but I want to know if there is a way I can get out of the drive/busride to the store.

Put in the first dvd that came with your computer and hold the c key before the chimes. Go into disk utility run repair disk, repair permissions when those are finished go into startup disk and select your hd.

Will the MBP operate with the power adapter attached?  If not, make an appointment with an Apple store genius bar.
    Ciao.

  • Yet another MacBook Pro with display issues (NVdia chip)

Exactly one year and 1 week after purchase, my video controller started freaking out. So just 1 week out of warranty, my display started flickering, blinking, showing garbled clumps of pixels and got progressively worse over the last week until, now, it locks up and/or reboots after about 15 minutes of uptime.
    I have:
    - installed all updates, including firmware
    - reset PRAM
    - re-seated RAM
    - replaced RAM
    - used SMC FanControl to try and keep the GPU cool
    - parked the MacBook in front of the fan/air conditioner in an attempt to keep the GPU cool
    - ran the Hardware Test, which returned a faulty video controller
None of the above have had any positive effect whatsover.
I've dug through these forums and hunted around the rest of the net for more info. Every symptom points to the NVidia GeForce issue. It seemed to be heat related. Maybe it was at first (even though max temps were never over 180 F), but after just one more day it doesn't seem to matter anymore. The machine is just FUBAR.
Tomorrow, I'm taking it in to the Apple store for service. Everything I've read here tells me it'll be at $1,000 logic board replacement since I'm a week out of warranty. Needless to say, if I come home tomorrow with a $1,000 receipt AND no laptop I'm going to be pretty upset.
What really concerns me is that, if I have to get the logic board replaced, they'll just put in yet another faulty board with another NVdia chip that will do the same thing all over again. There has to be another option, short of just getting a new iMac or tower with an ATI card instead. What else can I do?

http://noizesurge.com/downloads/gpu2.jpg - incidentally my computer had completely frozen at this point.
I'm pretty sure from observing these types of glitches that this is a hardware fault. I shall ring Apple on Monday and hopefully they can pick it up and sort it all out! Does anyone know roughly how long a turnaround is in the UK?
Yes, your video controller is toast. That's exactly how mine looked.
Just to make certain, run the Hardware Test:
    - Put in DVD 1 that came with your MacBook Pro.
    - Shut down
    - Restart, holding the D key
    - You'll be put into test mode, run the default test (no need to run the robust test at this stage)
I'm betting it will return a message that looks like: "4VDC/1/40000003: videocontroller"
If so, your logic board will have to be replaced.
The Apple Store I went to (Michigan Ave, Chicago) told me it would take 5-7 days. I'm not sure what UK times would be like, but I'd expect a little longer.
    bikemonkey wrote:
Incidentally, people are saying that they've have logic boards and what not replaced only for the problem to reoccur. Does this mean nVidia haven't properly fixed the issue?
Correct. Nvidia hasn't done a thing about this (that I'm aware of), and Apple seems to be putting the same logic boards with the faulty Nvidia chips back in.
Until we see a new/refreshed line of MacBook Pro's, I think we're stuck.

  • Macbook not starting up after water spill - beeping sounds

I was cleaning the keyboard with water while it was turned off and accidently spilt about 50-100ml of water onto the keyboard, also accidently turning the computer onto sleep mode at one point. I tried cleaning up the water by letting it drain, but it started coming out of the sides of the computer. That's when the computer started making a strange beeping sound like it was an alarm sound so I quickly pulled the battery out and left it to dry out, took a night for the water to stop dripping out of the sides. In the morning I used a haridryer on coold settings to try and evaporate any remaining water, and tried plugging the power cord in and turning on, but it's not starting up!
My macbook was the 2008 model so it's past warranty, but it's only 2 years old and I really can't afford to buy another one right now because I'm just a poor college student
If anyone has advice on what I could do I would be really greatful...

Have you tried turning the computer on while the computer was plugged in?

  • Macbook not starting up - Invalid Sibling Link

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch (Early 2011). It refuses to start up anymore. I have done the following tests/checks
    1. Try booting into safe mode. It gets stuck there as well.
    2. Boot into single-user mode and run fsck. It get a "Could not repair Macinotish HD" (or something similar, I ran this a long time ago and am recalling what it said)
    3. Booted using the OS X Install Disk, and ran Disk Utility. Tried repairing and got
    Invalid sibling link
    Rebuilding catalog B-tree
The volume Macintosh HD could be repaired
    Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restor your backed-up files.
    4. I also ran fsck_hfs -r as some sites suggested, but this didn't work either.
I believe this is not a hard disk fault, since I can boot into my Windows partition without issue.
Is there any way to fix this problem WITHOUT having to reinstall the OS?
In cases reinstallation is the only option, how do I go about backing my data? Should I create a New Image (using Disk Utility) and back up everything on an external HD? Won't this also image the corrupted part?
Here's my problem with reinstalling the OS. I have a software that I have absolutely have to use in 3 days. However, I do not have access to the installation disks for that software. Thus, I would really not like formatting my HD. If I back up my data using the New image feature above, can I retrieve that software?
BTW, I also have access to another Windows laptop, if that will help at all.
This is a time urgent matter and I would be grateful if I get a reply asap. I really need my laptop to work. Thanks a lot!

  • Help!  Why is Macbook not starting, making clicking sounds, and rejecting install disk??

I was working on my Macbook (OS 10.4.11) when the screen froze.  I forced a shutdown.  When I try to power it up again, I get a blank screen (not sure if gray or blue; looks sort of in between) and hear clicking noises. Eventually, a flashing question mark appears.
I found a post on this problem that said the hard drive was looking for instructions to start up (hence the clicking noises) and an Apple article about possible solutions, <http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1440>, but none of the steps worked.
I then booted up again, inserted Install Disk 1 for Tiger, and forced a shutdown again so that I could boot up with "C" held down see if I could solve the problem from the Uilities menu on the Install Disk.  However, when I pressed the power button to start up again, the computer just spit out the Install Disk (even with "C" held down).
Can anyone tell me (1) what the problem seems to be with the computer and/or the CD drive; (2) whether a low-tech type like me might be able to fix it if I can get the Install Disk to run, or whether I just have to take it to my local Mac shop?  The computer is no longer under warranty, so getting it repaired will probably be expensive.
Thanks so much for any good advice out there!

  • Macbook not starting when in sleep mode

So my white 13 inch macbook was in sleep mode for a couple hours and usually I just press either the enter/return button or the power/startup button to wake the computer but for the past two times, it wasn't starting up unless I held the power/startup button until it completely turned off. I then had to completely restart the computer. And that was the only way I could get it to turn on. In the past, like I said, everything worked fine when I hit the enter or power button. Has this happened to anybody else's macbooks? I guess from now on I'll pretty much always have to shutdown the mac completely when not using it.

    HI,
*"Will it wipe the hard drive? Will I lose files? What will change exactly*
If you read the material at those links it explains everything. It's very simple. It won't wipe the drive or lose files.
SMC: "As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping."
These are just simple trouble shooting techniques for sleep mode issues.

  • Yet another "MacBook Air vs. Pro" question, now with specifics!

I'm upgrading from an older Mac Mini 2GB purchased in '08.  I've looked at some recent comparicson threads here, but help me clarify my thinking for my specific situation...
I'm strongly considering the 13" MacBook Air. Aside from Web surfing and email, the most demanding regular use I foresee is photo editing in Aperture and maybe Adobe Lightroom. I'm not a pro, just a fairly avid amateur. I use iWork for home word processing, editing a club newsletter, etc. For photo editing I have a new non-Apple 24" monitor with DVI input. Hence, I probably will not need the sexy Retina display, tempting as it is.
Beyond that, I may download and demo industry specific software, both Windows and Mac versions, to practice and learn for my job. Adobe Captivate is on my list right now.  I see in another thread that dual booting Windows in BootCamp is doable and works well.
I'll also occasionally use the Adobe CS suite (CS4 for now)  for web design - no application development.
I also like to keep my computers as long as possible to amortize the cost. 4 years for my old Mini is actually pretty short. I had my old G3 tower for nearly 10 years! So I wonder if the limited upgradeability of the Air would be much an issue.

Your last sentence probably makes the MBA unsuitable for your consideration because the RAM is not upgradeable and the SSD uses a proprietary connector which limits your choices should you want to upgrade it (and increases the cost). The MBP offers the same portability with better graphics performance (it has a discrete video card rather than Intel integrated video), and its RAM and drive can be upgraded.
I have an early 2009 MBA which I've upgraded to 8GB and added an SSD to. Except for when I'm traveling, it is my professional workhorse and I can easily believe I'll get at least another 2 years of use from it. Because the MBA cannot be upgraded like the MBP can, I'm completely unwilling to estimate how long I might keep one. OTOH, I tend to resell my notebooks after 2 years and get a very good resale value from them.

  • Macbook not starting

Hi, I've noticed a few times since I got my macbook on Tuesday, that it won't start. I have to remove the battery, several times, then attempt to boot it up, opening and closing the lid periodically. It usually takes about 10 minutes to get the laptop to start back up again.
Any thoughts on what this problem could be?
I don't so much mind, so long as I can get it to start up again, but I am a little concerned.
If you know what may be wrong? Any thoughts are really appreciated. Thanks!
(And of course it refused to start when I was showing it off to my friends... Who loved it after it decided to boot up.. sigh...)
Oh well, I still want to cuddle it anyway

Do you think that how erratic it occurs is as signal for a hardware issue? (I'd rather not send it in to have to wait for 6 weeks to get it back unless I really, really have to.)
For some perception, it occurs once every.. hrm... 30 or 40 times it is shut down and rebooted? (I travel with it, so I am not comfortable with carrying it in a bag while in sleep mode, and with the heat and cases of some duo core systems catching on fire, I really don't want to run it overnight. My temperature is beautiful so far as I am concerned: (Averages 36 C on the hard drive, and 60-65 on the CPUs during moderate to heavy load.)
Thanks for letting me know how the PMU was reset! I didn't know that.

  • Macbook not starting from  install disc

Hi, I have a Macbook that I want to fully erase. I tried starting up with a Leopard install disc holding down C. Result was the grey startup screen with the icon and then a message to restart. Same result with a Snow Leopard disc and selecting the install disc as the Startup in System Preferences. No go for the lot. I would be gratefully for any suggestions. Thanks. Geoff

You must have retail install disks, i.e. generic disks for any mac model previous to that generation of Mac OS. You do not mention this detail. I suspect you do not use appropriate install disks. What happens if you use the original install disks? Or you do not have them any more?

  • Another Mac not starting up out of the blue

    Hello all,
I know this topic has been discussed quite a bit and I have searched through the archives. However, I figured I would post my experience in the hopes that someone out there may have insight for me which may be unique to my situation.
I have a modified G4 Digital Audio machine which over the years has given me some trouble from time to time. Usually however, I can figure out what is plaguing it and fix it.
My computer was on and had been on for some time yesterday (multiple days). As I was watching a Quicktime video, all of a sudden the computer just powered itself off. When I tried to restart the machine, the power button would glow, but nothing would start up. No startup chime, no nothing. The power button would stay lit only as long as I hold it, a red light goes on the motherboard, fans try to spin, once I release the button, everything goes dead.
PMU reset does nothing. Also, I have put a fresh battery in and that changes nothing either. I left the machine unplugged overnight, also left it without the battery, same behavior when I try to start it back up.
All of this seems like it might be the power supply, right?
I replaced the power supply about 6 months ago. Could be the case again, but I am doubtful since it was replaced and I had done nothing to cause this (no pinched cables) as the computer was running fine, then powered itself off out of the blue.
I will say that when I opened the case, the motherboard, computer contents were hotter than usual when I open the case.
Also, I noticed recently that my GeForce2 video card's fan had recently stopped spinning.
As an educated guess, I am thinking that my video card has fried since it was so hot in there and the fan has stopped spinning on it for who knows how long. Would that prevent power up and cause behavior like the glowing button?
Power supplies and video cards are not cheap items for a Mac, therefore I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for how to test this without replacing all those parts? Since I'm leaning towards it being a video card, does anyone know of other AGP video cards which may work in this machine? I've looked at replacing GeForce cards in the past, but they never say anything about being compatible with OSX. Does anyone know if they will work anyway? I'd like to get a cheaper video card to see if that may be what is causing this.
    Any help appreciated...
    Thanks,
    Shane

What applications are open?  You can tell by viewing the Dock.
Not knowing what the installer is trying to install I would close the disk image and delete it.  If you don't know where the disk image file is located Control (right) - click on the Installer icon on the Desktop and select Get Info from the contextual menu.
The Info window will show where the disk image file is located like in this screenshot:
Since the installed is generically named as is the disk image be very wary of it.

  • 2 macbooks not starting

I have an interesting problem. 2 of my children each use a macbook, I believe pre 2008 model (A1181).
This week one stopped working. After shutdown pressing the i/o button would no longer turn on/boot up the laptop.
Followed all the reset instructions multiple times but no luck.
Yesterday the 2nd macbook 'gave up'. Exactly the same symptons.
Battery led shows some power in one (switched them around to try to find the problem).
Connecting the laptop to power results either in green or orange led on power side.
Not sure where to go from here. I can't believe 2 identical laptops gave up the same week.
If the battery is the problem the laptop should boot while under power. My wife was using a 3rd macbook and that one simply ended up with a dead battery after 4-5 years while still working under power.
Both my children are heavy movie viewers so wondering if they downloaded a virus.
Anyone any suggestion what to do or how to trouble shoot ?

I don't know what else to suggest now other than to let an Apple Store Genius take a look at it. If the device is bad and it is out of warranty, Apple does have a replacement policy, but it comes with a cost.
My iPad is not eligible for warranty service. What are my service options?
Apple offers two service options for iPads that are not eligible for warranty service.
    Battery Replacement Service
If your iPad requires service only because the battery's ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, please refer to the Battery Replacement Service information.
    Out-of-Warranty Service
If you own an iPad that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will replace your iPad with an iPad that is new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.
    iPad model
    Out-of-Warranty Service Fee
    iPad mini
    $219
    iPad 3rd, 4th generation
    $299
    iPad 2, iPad
    $249
A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in US dollars and are subject to local tax.
Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPad that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.
Apple reserves the right to determine whether or not your iPad is eligible for Out-of-Warranty service. Replacement iPads have a 90-day limited hardware warranty or assume the remainder of your standard warranty or AppleCare service contract coverage, whichever is longer. Please see the AppleCare+ for iPad and Apple Repair Terms And Conditions for further details.

  • Yet another "Could not activate cellular data network"

I updated my factory unlocked iphone 4 about two weeks ago, and ever since I can't connect to internet services. I have locked everywhere for a solution for this problem and I keep finding people complaining about the very same thing yet no good solutions forthcoming from Apple.
Does anyone know a working solution for this that does not include:
-Pointing out that the iphone might not have been factory unlocked- I definitely was and I paid a high price to Apple for thar.
-Restoring iphone- I have done that about 5 times now. To factory settings.
Also: I have noticed that even when I remove my sim card and ask the iphone to return the network to factory settings, it restores my carrier's APN. The point of an unlocked IPhone should be not to have a default APN and I am hoping that if I manage to get the APN back to its original carrier-free settings I could somehow work around the cellular data issue.Any tips for that? Does anyone know the APN settings of a brand new unlocked phone?

There is no expectation that the error will occur when connecting via Wi-Fi. The device simply is not using or attempting to use cellular data at that time.
Contact the carrier and troubleshoot the issue with them.

I Recently replaced my macbook battery with a new one, and when i tried to power it on, it powers up for less then a second and shuts down. So i installed my old battery and even then it did not power up.

  • Macbook not starting up, spinning on grey screen

    Hi,
Before Christmas, I was entitled to a free battery from Apple. They told me to take my laptop to one of their external mechanics and they'd fit it for me while I wait. I did that and when I got home that day, I turned on the laptop but I was unable to get past the initial grey screen with the apple logo. The wheel would come up and just start spinning and spinning forever. I left it on for hours but still nothing.
Eventually, I discovered my hard drive may have got corrupted. How, I don't know, I'm inclined to blame the people who changed the battery as the minute they gave it back to me, it stopped working, but they're refusing to take any responsibility, neither are Apple.
I backed up the hard drive using disk utility and making a dmg of it but I'd left my laptop down in London for a few months so I didn't get around it sorting it until now. I've deleted the hard drive and re-installed OS Lion and the laptop began as if I'd just bought it. So I restored the dmg and now I'm back to square one, the spinning wheel and only being able to access disk utility by pressing CMD + R on startup.
I have so much stuff that I can't afford to lose on that dmg, what can I do to ensure I can get my laptop back to the way it was? If it's a lost cause, is there a way I can access the files and back them up one by one instead of as a dmg?
I have an appointment at the Apple Store on Wednesday but ideally I'd like to get this sorted myself so any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!
EDIT: Should also add, I'm trying to load it up in safe mode by holding shift but when I do this, the spinning wheel doesn't even appear, instead, the laptop just turns off after about 20 seconds.

    Just an update on this...
The guy at the Apple store felt it could have been a corrupt file on the hard drive that triggered after the battery swap. Personally, I don't buy this as it was working fine before and I did regular checks and scans on all my files to ensure nothing like this would happen but there you go.
Anyway, somehow he made it so I could access my files, something to do with partioning the hard drive and whatnot. So I dragged the files onto my external, restarted everything (i.e, clean OS reinstall) and dragged them back on. Not the most ideal way as I have to install all my apps again but it could be worse.
Moral of the story is: when all else fails, complain to Apple in-store and don't take no for an answer!
