Yet another MacBook Pro touchpad driver support thread (regarding KDE)

I recently bought a MBP Retina 13" Late 2013, just because this masterpiece of hardware has the best price-performance ratio in this price segment. OS X sucks, because developing on it in a scientific way is a pain. GTest with c++11 problems, curious compiler, no (gnu) g++, no sophisticated vim etc etc ... I just wanna get back to bleeding edge software and pacman. Theres just one thing: I dont want to pay 1500 € for kickass hardware, when I cant use it. So I want to ask what's the recent state of the touchpad support of linux. I wish to have those features with KDE:
- 3 finger swipe to change desktops
- normal 2 finger swipe support to scroll vertically
- eventually horizontal 2 finger swipe to move backward and forward (filebrowser/webbrowser)
- 2 finger pinch to zoom
- 3 or 4 finger pinch to make cool things like expose, which kde has
- Don't care about rotation stuff
Basically most of this would be manageable, if I could convince KWin to recognize those gesture. How far goes current driver support to realize those things genrally? Are all those things like swipe in from edges, pinch/swipe horiz./swipe vert. with 2, 3 and 4 fingers supported and further how are they handled/given to X?

I have no solution to any of your questions, but I am also very interested in their answers. I hope someone can shed some light on this issue or _real_ multitouch on linux in general.

Yet another MacBook Pro with display issues (NVdia chip)

Exactly one year and 1 week after purchase, my video controller started freaking out. So just 1 week out of warranty, my display started flickering, blinking, showing garbled clumps of pixels and got progressively worse over the last week until, now, it locks up and/or reboots after about 15 minutes of uptime.
I have:
- installed all updates, including firmware
- reset PRAM
- re-seated RAM
- replaced RAM
- used SMC FanControl to try and keep the GPU cool
- parked the MacBook in front of the fan/air conditioner in an attempt to keep the GPU cool
- ran the Hardware Test, which returned a faulty video controller
None of the above have had any positive effect whatsover.
I've dug through these forums and hunted around the rest of the net for more info. Every symptom points to the NVidia GeForce issue. It seemed to be heat related. Maybe it was at first (even though max temps were never over 180 F), but after just one more day it doesn't seem to matter anymore. The machine is just FUBAR.
Tomorrow, I'm taking it in to the Apple store for service. Everything I've read here tells me it'll be at $1,000 logic board replacement since I'm a week out of warranty. Needless to say, if I come home tomorrow with a $1,000 receipt AND no laptop I'm going to be pretty upset.
What really concerns me is that, if I have to get the logic board replaced, they'll just put in yet another faulty board with another NVdia chip that will do the same thing all over again. There has to be another option, short of just getting a new iMac or tower with an ATI card instead. What else can I do?

I'm pretty sure from observing these types of glitches that this is a hardware fault. I shall ring Apple on Monday and hopefully they can pick it up and sort it all out! Does anyone know roughly how long a turnaround is in the UK?
Yes, your video controller is toast. That's exactly how mine looked.
Just to make certain, run the Hardware Test:
- Put in DVD 1 that came with your MacBook Pro.
- Shut down
- Restart, holding the D key
- You'll be put into test mode, run the default test (no need to run the robust test at this stage)
I'm betting it will return a message that looks like: "4VDC/1/40000003: videocontroller"
If so, your logic board will have to be replaced.
The Apple Store I went to (Michigan Ave, Chicago) told me it would take 5-7 days. I'm not sure what UK times would be like, but I'd expect a little longer.

Correct. Nvidia hasn't done a thing about this (that I'm aware of), and Apple seems to be putting the same logic boards with the faulty Nvidia chips back in.
Until we see a new/refreshed line of MacBook Pro's, I think we're stuck.

No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

I just actually did that the other day. My newer MacBook died on me. So I took that drive out and installed in my older 2009 Macbook Pro and it works.
I however, can't tell you if moving your older Macbook Pro hard drive to your newer Macbook Pro might work. If the OS is the same version, it might. But if the OS in your older Macbook is not the same version, it might not.

Macbook Pro hard drive failed, data recovery possible?

Hi everyone,
I have a 13 inch MBP i purchased in 2010. Late last year I experienced some issues with the computer generally slowing down and one day it would not start up, getting to the gray screen with the apple logo and loading wheel. Contacting apple support I was talked through the process of copying my hard drive contents onto an external harddrive, re installing the operating system, and then copying the contents from the external hard drive back to my internal hard drive. Then after up dating the operating system (I think to snow leopard :S) I took it to a genius bar appointment and the guy did a few tests and said my hard drives looks ok and suggested upgrading the RAM from 4gb to 8gb, which I did with no noticable improvement. But seemed to work ok for another 8 months or so.
So last week after using my MBP alot during end of semester, it suddenly turned off while using google sketch up. I tried restarting a few times which did not help. Then I searched through apple support to find an answer. I managed to get into disk utility, which told me the disk was OK. I then tried to re install my operating system which took a very long time and failed twice before getting no response at all I booked another genius bar appointment.
The guy did some tests a very quickly came to the conclusion that it was my hard drive that had failed. He gave me the option to replace the harddrive for $200, which I think I will do, however as STUPIDLY did not have any of my data backed up, I am desperate to try and recover a few important documents and my iphoto library, so have put off replacing the hard drive until I try to recover my data.
So the apple guy gave me two programs to try and recover my data. He said its a confusing an tedious process especially with no experience but I am willing to give it a go. The two programs are DISC WARRIOR and EASEUS. I know disc warrior costs money and easeus is free. He should me how to boot my MBP into target disc mode, and sold me the appropriate cable (initially a firewire cable, but then told me a thunderbolt cable would be more efficient and was cheaper.. Im sure they are right but can anyone confirm that a thunderbolt cable can be used for what I am trying to do) to connect my MBP in target disc mode, to another macbook pro, and it should connect as an external hard drive. Then with one of these programs try to recover some of my files
He said what I can recover just depends on the extent of the damage to the hard drive and what sections have failed. I am waiting for a friend to use their MBP in a few days to download one of these programs and connect my MBP.
Does anyone have any experience or advise with using either of these programs recommended by the apple guy or anyother programs that I could use? Or any advice at all in how I should go about trying to recover my files by using another Macbook pro and target disc mode? or anything else that might be helpful?

Early 2008 MacBook Pro hard drive was killed; how to sync stuff

My early 2008 MacBook Pro hard drive was reimaged (not by me) and they lost everything on there, and have now put in a new hard drive, saying nothing was salvageable on the original HD. I have an iPhone, iPod, iPad. When i get the MBP back, how will I be able to get those devices synced so that everything I've bought/have goes back onto the HD?
The original HD was being reimaged because my work requires use of Windows, and I was using Windows via Boot Camp. Windows got a terrible rogue virus (from my clicking on a link), which shut everything down on that side. Work tech folks said they needed to reimage the Windows part of the drive, but said in the process, the reimaging took everything, Mac stuff included. That's why I'm in this situation. They are going to put in a new hard drive, but it is a blank slate.
Long story short: last time I backed up was 2 years ago, and it wasn't using Time Machine, but an external hard drive. That was also before I got my current iPhone, the iPad and made some additions to iTunes. (For those who say shame on me, for not doing a backup sooner, you're right: But we have gone through 3 moves in 18 months, so it has been kinda nuts.)
I expect the MBP to get sent back to me in the next day. I have no idea how to put these pieces back together. I'm not even sure about data recovery, but am most concerned about iTunes/iPhone/iPod/iPad.

How did you move the music to the external drive? What exactly is on the drive? The entire iTunes folder or only music? If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier. If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move. iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

I have a Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro (NOT Retina - I wanted the optical drive...) connected to a 27" Thunderbolt Display. If I get a MiniDisplay Port <-> MiniDisplay Port Cable (and connect it between the Thunderbolt Port on the Thunderbolt Display, and the MiniDisplay Port on the iMac), will the MacBook Pro also be able to drive my 27" Mid 2010 iMac as an external Monitor?
If not, will the iMac be able to drive the Thunderbolt display?
I'm trying to get to documents side by side on the 27" monitor so I can move data between them - Word/Word, Word/Excel, etc.,
It would be nice to know the answer before I go to the store and drop the $ on the cable...

After lots of reading, it seems it is possible (thanks for the link, OGELTHORPE), but I haven't been able to figure out the right cable configuration.

Confirmed this is possible based on the below...

Yes. If your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac supports two Thunderbolt displays this is possible. Your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac will need to be connected to your Apple Thunderbolt display and the iMac will need to be connected to the Thunderbolt port of the Apple Thunderbolt display. Not all iMacs support Target Display Mode. See Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for more information. Once connected, place the iMac into Target Display Mode to enable it as the second external display.
Notes:
Make sure the Thunderbolt Display is connected to your Thunderbolt-equipped Mac and is being recognized and used by the Thunderbolt-equipped Mac before connecting the iMac to the Thunderbolt display.
If the iMac is placed in the Thunderbolt chain before the Apple Thunderbolt Display, the Thunderbolt display will work as an external display for the iMac and it will stay active as an external display for the iMac, but it will not function with the main Thunderbolt-equipped Mac using the iMac's display.

The bulletpoint that worries me is the last one. I have tried with both a mini display port cable AND a thunderbolt cable, but the last bulletpoint seems to suggest that this is not possible if the iMac is NOT a Thunderbolt enabled iMac (which mine isn't). It does however say elsewhere that my iMac acting in TDM mode acts as a Thunderbolt Display, so it's all a bit confusing!!! It seems that my MacBook Pro can't drive both displays; so now I'm trying to figure out how to get the iMac to treat my Thunderbolt display as a second monitor.

It may well be a driver issue but considering the loading: Xorg trying to load different drivers is somewhat normal. @cafe you can see that these are autoconfigured by X above the loading in the log:

New 15" Macbook Pro hard drive failure

It is common for a 15" Macbook Pro hard drive to crash after 3 months? How does Apple Support generally fix? Genuis bar seemed overwhelmed by holiday crowds and recommended an $8k 3rd party vendor.

Over a large sample, the drives used are extremely reliable. You did not have a large sample, you had ONE drive.
Now you are much smarter than you were before this disaster. Apple will not pay for your data recovery. You (and everyone) need a backup solution.
Apple provides an excelent backup solution called Time Machine, that can do hourly backups to an external drive without disturbing your current work. Buy yourself an external drive at least twice as large as the built-in. Turn on Time machine, make sure it is working, plug it in at least daily, and then don't worry about it any more.

Trouble re-formatting Macbook Pro Hard drive

I've recently had to reformat my 13" Macbook Pro Unibody and have been unable to do so. I've done it previous times before however now, I recieve a POSIX error as well as others regarding an "input/output error" or that it is "unable to allocate the memory."
So far I've tried booting from the disk and used disk utility (that's where I get the errors) and I've tried to format using terminal to no avail. I recieve the same errors. I've come across suggestions to use "gparted." I was able to create a partition however it is not recognized when I go into terminal or try to install OSX 10.6. Can someone walk me through or point me in the right direction to re-format my hard drive? I'd appreciate the help and would rather resolve the problem my self with the help of others rather than going to the Apple store and spending loads of money I don't have. Should you need more information feel free to ask and I will provide.

I found a ton of other threads and posts about this problem... most of them were talking about external drives connected via USB (which worked fine with FireWire for some reason), but I found one who had the same exact problem as you with a 13" MacBook Pro internal drive.
That guy said that he replaced the hard drive cable (the one that connects the drive to the logic board) and everything worked fine.
It seems to be some type of firmware issue. And now that I think about it, I had a client machine with a similar problem at one point. We ended up sending the machine to Apple (it was still under AppleCare) and they did in fact replace the hard drive cable due to "firmware issues."
I would give that a try. It seems to be most logical being that you had the same problem with two different hard drives.

Macbook Pro Hard Drive Failed

Hi Everyone, this is going to be a tough one, but please help me.
Two days ago, my computer slowed. So I decided to do a system update, but during the update it got stuck, so i hit the reset button.
Then the laptop did not want to boot, and would get stuck with the apple logo and the circling thing underneath.
So then I entered recovery mode, but the disk utility repair always ended in an error, and installing the OS online wasn't working as well. I inserted my original LION os cds and hit the C button during start up but it wouldn't boot from CD, instead it would end up in recovery.
I bought a firewire-firewire cable, and couldn't access my laptop through target disk mode.
Finally I used disk utility to erase Macintosh HD, restarted and nothing happened. I reentered target disk mode and now I can see my hard disk. This time I erased the GIUD partition table as well, which wiped out my recovery partition.
Now when I restart, its showing a flashing question mark. The command R key does not work. The ALT or C keys also dont do anything anymore, I just end up with a white screen. I can still reset NVRAM, and the good news is I can see the hard drive through the target disk mode from another macbook pro, but thats about it. I ran disk utility's repair disk from my working macbook pro on the non working one, and it comes up okay with no problems. But when ever I restart my computer, I just get a flashing question mark.
Please help me, I just want to have a wokring laptop.

Start the MBP with the original Leopard OSX install disk holding the C key.
Proceed with the instructions until you see a menu bar on top of the display.
Select UTILITIES and from the drop down menu select Disk Utility.
Click on Disk Utility>First Aid and run verify and Repair.
What are the results?

macbook pro touchpad curser problems. typing randomly jumps to wherever the curser is resting at the time. unbelievably maddening. multiple devices same all have same problem. hard to believe we cannot find anything on the apple site about this. MANY complaints outside of this site on this issue... clearly a touchpad/battery design flaw being ignored by Cupertino. during the writing of this post, the curser jumped randomly and started typing in a different location six times. IMPOSSIBLE to use as a word processor since typing becomes quite frustrating. HELP. any ideas? Fanboy and shareholder. three macbook pros in the house...all the same problem. (please do not offer separate keyboard as solution...this is a laptop, not a Surface Pro...)

Go step by step and test.
1. Restart
2. Shut down the computer.
    Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
    System Preferences > Point & Click
    Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after testing.
3. Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries? If so, replace the batteries.
4. Reset PRAM:   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
5. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
    "Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
6. Close all windows and quit all applications.
    Click the Spotlight -the magnifying glass icon- in the menu bar. Enter Disk utility in the box.
    Select Disk Utility from the drop down. When the Disk utility window opens up,
    select Macintosh HD, then First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions button.
    Ignore the time remaining estimate.
