Yet another Newbee having Airport problems

I am new to mac and also my macbook. I have been reading thru the discussions trying to find an answer to my problem. I believe I am not alone! I have a Belkin modem/router and although all my setups say I have Airport connection, I can open Internet Connect and select Airport and my network and it say that I have connection. But as soon as I loose the Ethernet cable.. guess what... No connection!!! PLEASE someone help the NewBee Aussie!

Well I have several macs (and PCs) of different kinds all connecting happily to a number or wireless networks. So OSX works fine so dont expect any 'fix' from Apple anytime soon because there isn't anything for them to fix! I suppose there is an outside chance that there is a problem with your Macbooks wireless card but I think it unlikely, you'd have to try to connect to someone else's network to be sure. In my experience if the airport icon in the menu bar shows you are connected but you can't get an IP address this is almost always either a router glitch which will normally go away if you restart it, or a password problem which should be reported by OSX but often isn't. Firstly I would check the router and its settings. Unfortunately the newer the router the more mechanisms it will probably have to stop people connecting so a good strategy is to start with no security and take it step by step from there. Also make sure you have the latest firmware upgrade applied from the manufacturers website, there usually will be one. 'Auto' -ing everything that can is also a good starting point. If your router keeps logs of traffic enabling these can provide a useful source of diagnostics. Of course once it is working you must introduce at least some form of encryption for your own peace of mind, which brings me neatly on to the next point: passwords. There is a big problem with WEP (well several actually!) in that the way the router translates an english phrase into hex is not always the same as the way the mac does it. So you either need to enter the same hex string into the router and the mac (prefixed by $ for the mac, this is what tells it it is getting hex), or sometimes you can see the hex equivalent generated by the router and then just type that in to the mac. The hex key will be 26 characters long for 128bit WEP eg 23f45fa1f1ba91a6241f7f0eff However if there is not a good reason not to use WPA or WPA2 (such as other older kit you need to connect) then this is much better. Set your router to WPA-PSK (TKIP) or WPA2-PSK (AES) and the Mac will recognise what is required and ask you for the passphrase. In this case you CAN use the same english language phrase in the router and the mac as it always seems to work.
Finally we need to make sure that any bad stuff we've done before is not messing us up now. Trashing the preferences as described in the earlier post is a good plan. Also open your keychain with the KeychainAccess utility (in yr Utilities folder) and delete any wireless network entries that have been saved in there. Stick with it it can be sorted out its just a matter of working methodically step by step until you are successful.

  • Yet Another iPad Wi-Fi Problem

So, I'm having the famous iPad Wi-Fi issue everyone else is. I've tried everything that people have said, yet YouTube rarely works. Some days, it works perfectly, though a little slow. Other days, like today, it doesn't work at all. What's the problem here?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • I am having airport problems on my macbook pro

When I go online me screens partly load and then stop and then no other pages will load, and i have taken my macbook in for other internet issues which they tell me have been fixed. any help would be great!!

i dont think it has to do with the router. its not just at home that it happens. it also happens when i use a wireless connection at school, or any other place.
It has (mostly) nothing to do with the router settings.
If you have the same problem on other places too, you might try the following if you run Lion (OS X 10.7.x).
Switch off wifi on the machine.
Then delete the below mentioned (bold) files. On Lion, the Library is hidden. You have to use "go to" -> "Go to folder" on finder to access them.
You will find the files on your system drive (not your home folder) as follow:
    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist
    /library/preferences/com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist
    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /library/preferences/SstemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
If there are files in this folders with the same name but additional .orig at the end, delete them too.
If done, go to Disk Utility (Applications - Utilitys) and perform a "permissions repair" on the system disk. You can safely ignore upcoming warnings during that process. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1448
When the run is finnished, reboot the Mac.
    Join your wireless again.

  • Yet another strange N97 wifi problem!

    Hi,
I have a problem with my N97 that doesn't seem to be addressed yet.
I tried to connect via wifi to an internet connection, somehow that connection got placed in the "uncategorized" section under "destinations." SO i chose "move to other destinations" -> "internet" it sorta got moved since I don't see it under "uncategorized" but it doesn't show up under "Internet"!!
I still see the signal when I scan for it, I clicked connect but after I type in the WEP key, it doesn't connect, in fact the thing hangs (only way to get out is to press hang up key). I also cannot add it to access point. Anyone had this problem? I tried restoring factory defaults but doesn't work. Any help?
    Thanks in advance!

I hope you've checked that it is not a 'Protected' access point.
By the way, why don't you simply delete this connection and then search again for that wifi signal?

  • Yet Another Guild Wars 2 Problem

Hey, so I ordered the Digital Version about 4 hours ago and I downloaded the BB app and everything. Now I know people are having trouble opening up the app, but mine seems to be working fine. The problem here is that my order still says it's "in process."  My friend ordered the game last night and said he recieved his second email within 20 minutes with the serial number to join the GW2 beta. Why is my email taking so long?

I ordered the Digital Deluxe Version exactly 4 hours ago and I downloaded the BB app and everything is good to this point. The app seems to be working fine, I am logged in at least. The problem here is that my order still says it's "in process."  I paid $80 for this product and I have been a loyal Best Buy customer for over 20 years now, but a seemingly simple Digital Download not even starting after 4 hours is absurd.
Why is my game email taking so long? It seems that the whole point of Digital Downloads are to make it easier for the store employees and the customer. I could have driven to the store, actually I could have crawled to the store and back home by now.
I emailed Customer Support and hour ago and so far I have only received this message:

  • Yet another Music Store Connection Problem

First time iPod/iTunes user. Just Installed iTunes 5.0.1.4.
I Get The Error Message: iTunes could not connect to the music store. The network connection Timed Out.
I tried many of the suggestions that were posted to no avail.
Whatever iTunes is doing it seems to be pretty anti-social when it comes to network I/O. I noticed that when I operate iTunes, IE couldn't see any web sites. So I stopped iTunes, opened a command window and started the command "ping yahoo.com -t". It responded normally and uneventfully. But once I restarted iTunes, the ping results started timing out. I get the same result when I ping my router instead.
    Any Ideas ???

Well.... This has been a hot topic in these forums for a long time. I had this problem for at least 6 months without a resolution. The answers usually involve turning off a software firewall like the new Windows XP security center or Norton firewall. Believe me when I tell you I tried everything to fix this including turning off all firewalls. I eventually was able to find a copy of Itunes 4.7 and have been using that successfully (being able to connect to the music store).
I solved all my connection problems yesterday. I started up my disabled Zone Alarm Firewall program. I went to the allowed to pass through program list and clicked allow for all the programs that connect. Now every thing works great and I was able to install the latest Itunes for windows & connect to the store. The Zone alarm is running as well as the windows security center firewall. I think the Zone Alarm has opened up communication ports that the window security won't. I know many of you will think that I am an idiot. Maybe I am but I got the darn thing working. My belief is that this is not an Apple malfunction. I take back all my curses at them.

  • Another Newbee with Artwork Problems

My feed seems to be working ok, my podcasts are showing up in itunes, but the artwork never shows. Any suggestions, or could someone check my feed. Here's the feed address:
    http://podcast.getfitpod.com/rss2.aspx

The URL to your artwork is invalid:
    http%3a%2f%2fmedia.podcastingmanager.com%2f71509-3378%2fDefaultImage%2fEpisode+3 .jpg
All those weird % numbers at the beginning and elsewhere are causing the problem. Looks like whatever you copied the URL from used some kind of odd characters instead of : and \
Fix that and your artwork should show up in a few days.

  • Yet another iPad mini screen problem

I have a screen issue with my iPad Mini WiFi, i searched the forums but I couldn’t find anything related to my problem.
There are times when I unlock the device (manually or with the smart cover) which the screen gets messed up at the left side only, kinda scrambled and distorted almost like when you try to switch a higher resolution to a monitor and it doesn’t supported.
I don’t know how else to explain it so i made a picture using Photoshop since i can't take a picture: http://i43.tinypic.com/ddkpqr.jpg
When this occurs it goes away after 1 second but it’s happening more and more often now. Could be this a hardware problem?

To answer my question, i found this topic that looks a lot like my problem only in smaller scale: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2497498?start=0&tstart=0. Looks like a hardware problem after all

  • Yet another 10.4.7 Problem

    Hello eveyone, please help...
I've read through all the post about problems with the update and I fall into the category of "corrupted download" .
-I re-downloaded the update and it was successful,
-Ran the update, and it never came back. (spinning cog, powers off)
-I have tried the cmd-opt-p-r route,
-I have tried the Disk Utils route with the install DVD- no luck- fails with an error "Invaild B-tree node size " message,
-I have tried numerous restarts and and retry with the disk utils.
-I tried the archive and restore from the DVD- the drive does not show up.
    - and no, i don't have a full backup of my most recent things, so i would REALLY like to repair this drive, or atleast look into it to pull some things off before wiping the structure competely.
Whats next to try? is there a way to pull data off the drve with a messed up structure??

HI Jonny, this is the G5? <holding breath>
Let DW do it's thing. It may take quite a while. If DW cannot complete the task, I'd try running AHT ("Apple Hardware Test").
If CD's came with your computer it is on a CD labeled "Hardware Test" To test with CD, insert the CD and restart holding the "c" key until you see the spinning gear.
    If DVD insert DVD then:
    1. Turn on or restart the computer.
    2. Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manger screen appearsThe Startup Manager scans for available volumes.
    3. Optional: Clicking the circular arrow rescans for other volumes, including NetBoot Server volumes. You can eject any disc in the drive or open an empty tray-loading drive by holding down the Command (Apple) and Period (.) keys. The Command-Period key combination will also close the drive. After inserting a CD capable of starting up your computer, you could rescan for volumes.
    4. Click the startup volume you want to use. "Hardware Test"
If hardware test does not mount or does not run bring the computer to Authorized Apple Repair.

  • Anyone NOT having Airport problems w/1.5 GB?

I would like to upgrade the RAM in my iBook 1.33 12 inch to 1.5 GB RAM, but all I am seeing are reports that it kills Airport. Has there been any fix identified? Has this been resolved with software updates?

    Good to hear additional qualification on the cure;
as that was suggested to be the answer at some
point in time, and I really had not kept up with
the discussion -- and had not needed to upgrade
over the 512MB on board in my iBookG4 1.33 12".
But now the question for me is to either buy the
    additional 1024MB chip for the iMacG4 or the iBook;
as they both use the same user-installed chip, and
    the iMacG4 would free-up a 512MB notebook chip if
that received the new Samsung 1GB chip from OWC.

  • Yet another, more difficult palindrome problem

    Hi guys,
I also have a Palindrome problem! For this problem, we are given a string and we have to print out all the possible palindromes of all the subsets of this string, in order.
For example, given "ab", the set of subsets would be {a, ab, b, ba} and we'd have to print out:
    a
    aa
    aba
    abba
    b
    baab
    bab
    bb
Each substring has 2 palindromes (i.e. abc has palindromes abcba and abccba).
I know we can easily generate all the substrings and all the palindromes and then just sort it. However, for a string of 8 characters, we're required to print out all the palindromes in 3.2 seconds! (If the 8 characters are unique, that's over 200,000 lines!).
Any ideas on how to go about this? Is there an elegant recursive solution for this? Would using an ArrayList slow down my program? Is there a faster way to print things?
    Thanks a bunch!!!

    Hi,
I've actually finished writing it. I've been trying
to speed it up for 2 days now. I've managed to tweak
it from 13 seconds to 7 seconds, but it's still too
slow (i need it to be faster than 3.2 seconds).
Thanks!Who are you? Are you val018?
I have to be a bit stupid, but I don't understand the rules. You say:
given "ab", the set of subsets would be {a, ab, b, ba} O, that I understand, and then you show the example output.
    a
aa <-- How do you construct this from the subsets shown?
    aba
    abba
    b
    baab
    bab
bbThat is. Are you allowed to use the same subset more than once? In that case you have an infinitive result set:
    a
    aa
    aaa
    aaaa
    etc..

  • Yet Another EJB/JBoss/Datasource problem

This is my first try at creating an ejb. I got that working, and now i'm trying to hook the ejb to a database via a datasource. I know I'm just doing something stupid and missing a tag or an xml file of a java: or whatever. If you can find this probem, I'll be completely in your debt forever.
I've googled and searched this form to death.
    Here're the relevant parts:

}If you can make this work, I'll be your best friend.

I think it would be better if u develop ejb by using
weblogic Server and X-Doclet tags. Then u don't need
to think about the xml files and their hectic tags. You don't need weblogic server to use x-doclet. It can be done even on jboss. The xml files can be automatically generated with some tool/plugin available with popular IDEs.

  • Airport problem 2

since apple closed the previous port related to airport problems , now noone can put their experiences, that i think it can help apple to see the problem we are experiencing here. please put all the details so apple will read this and arrive to a good idea of what's going on.
    i have 2 mbp
    1 2.33 ghz ,2gb, 120gb 10.5.1
    2 2.0 ghz ,2gb, 120 gb 10.4.11
the laptop runing 10.4.11 is also aving issues with the wireless, so is not only the leopard one. now, i downgraded my 10.5.1 to 10.4.10 and i have no more wireless issues anymore with that laptop. so there's a problem in networking software design with 10.4.11 and 10.5 and 10.5.1 . that is what i experienced. i did not want to go back to windows, so i purchased a linux machine to survive junt in case apple will ..... but still have faith, just i'm waiting for months, like others are doing too.

There's another thread called "Airport Problem" that goes into extraordinary detail about the behavior he's experiencing. Since someone locked the thread it is now being pushed back by current updates to other threads, in this category, but I recommend going back and skimming the comments in that thread to get a better idea of what is going on. You can't miss it, it has 33,000 views and 530+ comments.
I have been experiencing similar wireless behavior. I installed Leopard 10.5.0 (as an update) and my wireless connections became intermittent: I would see the airport icon in the menu bar indicate full strength, a few seconds later the icon indicates zero (0) strength, and then the indicator shows full strength again. This happens about three to five times per minute, and makes real time tasks, like playing in a raid on a Warcraft server, appear to lag badly for a few seconds up to about three times a minute. My interim solution for this was to drape 50' of cat 5 from the router to my office and wire in. Worked well enough for me to get work done and let Apple take the time to identify and fix the problem.
I did eventually do a clean install of Leopard, but that did not clean up my wireless signal problem.
Here's the interesting news, however. I'm using someone else's wireless facility at this moment. That facility used the same wireless router I've been trying to use with Leopard at my normal office location without success. So, predictably, when I first tried to use the wireless router here, I was seeing the same problem. Then a couple hours later, that router's transmitter appears to have died, because nobody here was able to see it on the Airport list.
We replaced the dead router with a new one of the same make and model (different revision), but with a different third-party firmware package.
I now have a rock solid wireless connection. It no longer drops signal strength to zero three times per minute.
This leads me to conclude that while there is still a problem with code in Leopard that makes it not work with some wireless routers that worked fine with Tiger, it is entirely possible to work around the problem by installing a different 50 dollar wireless router. Take your machines and try (with permission!) to use different wireless connections to see if any work.
I notice that AP Grapher indicates another wireless access point using the same channel as the AP I'm attempting to use, and the app also shows my transmit rate dropping to zero periodically. Nevertheless, the wireless appears to work now. I'll be changing my own wireless access point shortly.

There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
