Yet another slow speed thread....
Every so often I have issues with the speeds pertaining to my two BT Broadband lines into my house.
So here we go again, I've problems with one of the lines which for my rural village location usually nets very good results...
Normally I get this :-

Why I ask does the speed keep changing, today BT India claims it's a line CHOKE problem, likely story.
Net result wait another 48 hours for another phone call.
I get these issues every 6 months or so, I suspect the grass wouldn't be any greener with other ISP.
Can anybody offer any thoughts?
No changes, nothing at all, in actual fact I don't even have a PC connected to this broadband line it's purely for the games consoles. I have a separate broadband line for my home office etc.
Just had a call from BT India, with out wishing to sound derogatory I might as well talk to my pet cat. Apparently they were ringing to see if the problem had been resolved, I only reported it 2 hrs ago.

Yet another grey folder thread, help!
Sorry for yet another grey folder thread, but here goes:
Today, earlier, installed Firefox update, along with some addon updates for that program. Quit Firefox and attempt to relaunch, relaunch fails. Reset computer, thinking that will do the trick, I now have grey folder with question mark.
Resolve attempts: reset pram = fail; apple care cd = will not launch/fail; disk utility from original install disks = fail; cannot get repair of disk or permissions to work, continually get error about "failing on exit"; safe mode launch = fail
So, I've done everything, and I've come to conclusion that I am f***, and my HDD is fried (but I hope I am wrong).
So, dear gurus, my question(s)
A) Is my HDD salvageable at all? is there some trick to getting the AppleCare cd to work? Anything?!?!
if not, then B) How can I recover my documents/music/pictures? Long story short, there are several things on there that never had a chance to make my back up schedule, and I desperately want to keep them. Any way to make/copy a disk image to save the docs/imgs, or Firewire them to an external hdd? Do I need to consider a professional HDD rescue?Looks like a mechanical failure, and Apple won't cover the replacement due to a drop it sustained a year or two ago (the power cable was in, and it fell on the connection point, denting that in, Apple states there is a critical board their and that it would be $950 Tier 3 repair which I can't afford). So I'm going to try a Firewire Migration and a few other things and see if that works. If not, oh well. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

Hi all, trying to find out why such as slow speed. I live about 1/4 mile from the exchange. Have phoned BT 2 weeks ago who said an engineer will look in to it, but not heard anything as yet. So was trying to see if its a prob within the house. We only have the 1 socket in the house.

Go to Solution.Surprise surprise, yep on a fixed line 512. First guy i spoke to at sales said he hadn't heard of a half meg contract, then i said a FL 512 and he said "oh, i'll just have a look for you " came back and said he would transfer me to another sales dept who might be able to sort out a new contract. Next guy, when i told him the situation and the FL512 he said " yeah, thats exactally what you've got ". Sorted a new deal and hopefully should be getting 7.5mb next week. So i hope i wont be back here next week !

Yet Another Slow DSL Issue - Speed No Better Than Dialup?
I consider myself fairly computer savvy (as I work with them as a profession), but must admit that Internet Connectivity is not my forte...
I currently subscribe to the Hi Speed DSL Enhanced - lately, the speed has degraded to not much better than dialup. I have had this service for several years - nothing has changed on my end hardware-wise, so this event is not assumed to be from my end.
I am running:
Westell 6100 Modem (Transcever Rev 7.2.3.0/Software Version 4.04.03.00)
NetGear RangeMax Duo Wireless N-Router #WNDR3300
(2) computers are hooked up:
(1) XP - hardwired directly to the Westell modem
(1) Win7 - hooked up via wireless
Both computers are running latest version of OS, IE and all software is up to date.
Both computers use Kaspersky Internet Security (internet speed the same whether it is ON or OFF)
Absolutely NO Maleware/Spyware or Viruses on either computer
I reboot the modem several times/day - with no result in increased speed
(2) phones installed in home - both with appropriate filters installed
My 1st resort was to call support - I can tell you that will be the LAST time I utilize that 'service' I have come to the end of my rope with waiting extended periods of time, only to be connected with a foreign country, with a poor connection, with an operator that barely speaks english, only to have them read thru a script telling me to do ridicuously stupid things like 'reboot the modem' (no kidding) or swap my hardwire CAT cable from my computer to modem end-for-end?
Next resort was this forum - infinitely more helpful!
Ran a Transceiver Stats Check as a baseline - Speed (Down-Up) was a crappy 96 Kbits/sec by 448 Kbits/sec

One thing I did notice when attempting to check for newer version of modem firmware - when trying to update from web it gave me a 'Cannot Connect to Server Error'?
Speed is noticeably increased - but is it still where it should be?
If not, what other fixes should I attempt?
And finally, why is it that every time the weather gets even slightly inclement (sky clouds over, rain, thunderstorm, etc) our DSL goes off entirely?
Thanx for all your help in advance!Can you fill us in a bit on what you did to improve the synch speed on the modem? Did you find some advice around here to connect the modem to your NID or did you investigate for damage to the home wiring? Your line should be running at a higher speed, which for what you seem to have is 1184kbps down, 448kbps up.
Do you also have voice service with Verizon? If so, how is that, especially during storms? Getting any noise on it? It could be possible if the line is not having issues due to corrosion, somewhere along the line shielding could be missing, and in comes a storm CRC'ing the line out of service.

Just another thread to document the major issues I'm having with Lightroom 4.
System: Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel i7-720QM, 8 GB RAM 1333MHz, 500 GB HD, ATI Radeon 4670 1GB with Wacom Intuos 5
Working in the Develop module has been completely unacceptable and is costing me hours of editing time and frustrating, which means its costing me money. Everything from navigating between photos to adjusting slider bars seems to be laggy to put it lightly. After using the Adjustment Brush, making universal changes is taking forever! And if I got back to create an additional adjustment with the Adjustment Brush tool, it's almost not even worth it because it is so slow to respond. Similar to the slow downs after using the Adjustment Brush tool, any changes made after making any adjustments in the Lens Correction tab seem to be super sluggish as well. Oh top of it all, my computer is running extremely hot when running Lightroom, which ever occured in past versions!
I've tried several suggestions that I've seen in forums, such as creating a fresh Catalog and importing the files directly into that new Catalog, hiding the Histogram to free up resources, reducing the size of the Catalog to just the working set I'm currently working on... I've now installed the 4.1 RC and do seem to see some increase in response with the sliders within the develop module, but once I start using the Adjustment Brush and Lens Correction, it seems to be back to it's sluggish self. And after editing a few photos, the entire program is crawling.
I think it's great that Adobe has such a strong following that people seem to be so understanding and patient about these issues, but find it unacceptable that such an unpolished release was issued to the public. If the issues are eventually remedied I will be fully on board with Lightroom, once again, because I do think that the revamped develop module has been a major improvement for editing and workflow, but all those improvements are pretty useless when I'm losing so many hours battling with performance issues.No changes, nothing at all, in actual fact I don't even have a PC connected to this broadband line it's purely for the games consoles. Yet another iPhone WiFi thread - cannot connect to some OPEN networks
I make no apologies in starting another thread about iPhone WiFi connectivity. Judging by the number of references to WiFi issues in this forum, as well as on the Internet generally, this is a big issue with many users and yet there seems very little acknowledgement by Apple that there is problem.
In my case I have a first generation iPhone which works well on most WiFi networks, both open and closed, including my secured network at home, but cannot connect properly with some open networks. I have had this problem while using 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1 firmware.
Sometimes I get the "Cannot Connect ..." message and sometimes I am able to connect and obtain a good signal and see an IP Address and a Subnet mask, but no Router or DNS address.
I'll repeat that I talking about open networks, so there is no password issue. In one local cafe, I am unable to connect to a network that I used to be able to connect to routinely. I have talked to the owner, who is another Mac and iPhone user and he assures me that he has not changed any router settings.
Can anyone offer any suggestions beyond the usual re-setting and re-booting options? Is there something about iPhone MAC addresses or the WiFi signal that certain routers don't like?
SimonThis is not a solution to your problems but:
1- Expecting someone from Apple to respond here is a vain hope. This is a discussion forum for users and you can only expect responses from users. Talk to Apple tech support if you want a response from them.
2- I saw an item on an iPhone blog page somewhere yesterday saying that Apple was now replacing iPhones with this issue if you took it to an Apple store. Don't know if it's true but it also had a workaround that you could use for your own home network if you were having problems—and I am—and that workaround basically worked for me.
I turned wi-fi off on the phone and opened Airport Utility on my iMac. I turned wi-fi security OFF and then tried to connect. I actually got a connection straight away, and I noted down the IP addresses and subnet mask data from the DHCP screen in the iPhone's wi-fi network info screen. I then restored wi-fi security on my iMac. Of course that restarts the router and I lost my connection and when it started up again, the IP addresses had changed but the subnet mask had not. I swapped to the Static screen instead of the DHCP screen and edited all 3 IP addresses. That got me my connection back and it has continued to work throughout today. That's the best result I've had so far.
It seems to me that my iPhone has problems picking up the network data from my home network and I don't know why that is. I was at a friend's last night and tried to connect to his system and it connected straight away. I assume there's something about my settings which is problematic but I don't know what it is but at least now I have a workaround.
It's possible that something similar is going on for you with the public networks you're having problems with but, unfortunately, the workaround I tried won't work for you in a public network so that's probably not much help.
You could try taking your phone to an Apple Store and seeing if they exchange it. The blog I read suggested the magic words were "hardware problem". In my case I don't think it's a hardware problem but it may be in yours. -
Yet Another Sldeshow Quality Thread
I've read many of the discussions on this forum about slide show image quality problems and have tried a number of the suggestions that people have made. ( For example, checked for upates...have tried both encoding in HP and HQ...have slowed burn speed down to 1X... also tried several different disk brands.) The bottom line, however, is that my photos, which look terrific in iPhoto, look crummy after burning to a disk in iDVD....basically, lacking "definition".
It makes little difference whether I play them back on different dvd players, TVs...or on my computer drive.
Most of my slide shows have been made in iMovie (for control reasons). However, I've also tried going directly from iPhoto to iDVD.
To put this in perspective, I was recently given a cd that was created by Easyshare, containing wedding images that were taken by a point and shoot. At the same wedding, my wife took many shots using an 8 mp SLR. The Easyshare images look better than those in my iDVD slideshow.
Pretty discouraging, but not ready to give up and sure would welcome any ideas people might have.To put this in perspective, I was recently given a cd

You must remember that the DVDs we can produce today were designed to be viewed on conventional TV sets and have only roughly VGA resolution (640x480 pixels NTSC or 768x576 pixels PAL) - in NTSC terms this is LESS THAN 0.3 megapixels!
There is no way a 0.3 megapixel image will come anyplace close to the quality of your 8 megapixels digital camea images. Sorry.

Yet another colour management thread
Here is a warm, saturated image worked on in lightroom, converted to adobe RGB on export, converted to SRGB on output from photoshop. (srg profile not embedded).

Now my understanding is that in IE all of these will display the same (and they do, i've tested it), and they all look like the oversaturated red one. I also understand that the gamut of your monitor will affect just how red they actually appear.
Windows also displays them all the same - the uber red version.
So the question is - how the frick are we supposed to supply these to our clients? Bearing in mind they all have different monitors, browsers, OS's. I've just had the client on the phone complaining about the saturation and it just sounds like so much ******** waffling about gamut and colour managed browsers.
Are you to just avoid warm saturated images? Is there an application that we can distribute with the images that will display them correctly? Because if I leave them on a DVD I have no control over what viewer will mangle the colour management.
I'd love some feedback on how other photographers deal with this issue.
EDIT: and joy of joys, adobe obviously strips out the colour managment when these are posted - because the 2nd two look correct in the edit window, but the same as the first when I post itI clearly see the differences in you screen shot, although my version of IE seems to obey the color profiles I embed in our imagery.
I deal with color management like others in this thread - I use calibrated monitors, I profile using sRGB (the lowest common denominator tag for general digital distribution IMO) and advise my clients to do the same (calibrate!). Some commercial clients require CMYK, in that case I edit completly in sRGB and only convert to CMYK when creating final delivery imagery. I use Adobe PS default CMYK settings and I specify this up front in contractual agreements. I have yet to get many complaints that cannot be explained by failure to understand the huge variations in hardware and software that a viewer of digital images might encounter. This allows me to do the best I can and you gotta just let the rest go . -
router reset it self 3 times this morning and the speeds are still slow it's dropped from 1.2mb downstream to about
0.7mb. on bt option 3 only used 36GB usage so not a heavy user and the router has not been turned of for about a month. IP profile 750kbps was 1000kbps. Is their anything that i can do or do i need to wait and see if it goes back to 1.2mb.

Yet another DVD Playback thread...
Gone through every other thread related to DVD playback issues when you do a forum search for "dvd playback". If I try to play a DVD, the disc spins for quite a while while (S)MPlayer just sits there and eventually crashes. Tried this with multiple DVDs, updated all my software...here's the log. It doesn't play in xine or VLC either.

Did you try just mplayer dvd:// ? That's quite a long options list you've got there.

Yet Another Slow Performance Issue
I am noticing some seriously slow performance on my state-of-the-art 2.5 Ghz G5. I don't even know where to start. It happens frequently, it happens switching back and forth b/w apps, I get the spinning ball all the time, I have to restart to "refrech" the machine, which doesn't help, it hangs, it thinks, it does whatever it does. No real reason it would be doing this, I am not taxing the processors in any great way. I only have a few apps open, running a medium size photoshop file, and I'm trying to get some work done on a deadline and it's really reaaly irritating.
What kind of maintenance should I run to cleanse this machine or somthing? Norton? De-fragment? I sure hope there's a solution for this weak performance.
G5, dual 2.5Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.2)Norton Utilties hasn't been good to us, even their AV has had a serious takeover exploit because it runs with root powers.
Applications running with root powers (admin password install) is one of the greatest threats we face as Mac users because it introduces all the more chances of failure behind our greatest security barrier, the admin password.

One thing I need to add to my file above is that Western Digital is coming out with a larger faster drive called the RaptorX. Even though the clear cover is about worthless to us PowerMac G5 owners, the size and speed of this drive makes a excellent boot drive for performance. -
Yet another slow connection issue
My broadband speed is totally unreliable - and from a quick scan of the forums it seems I'm not the only one!
Much the same as numerous other posters, I'm paying for up to 8meg broadband but typically getting far less than that. Being in a rural location i appreciate that the local phone exchange probably isn't the most high tech facility in the world, but we're only 2 miles away from it and the speed tester has recorded up to 7meg on occasion. Today, and this seems to be an increasingly frequent occurence, the speed tester says "your IP profile is 250k".
We had an engineer out 3 weeks ago for the same problem but he could find no faults at the house, said there were no reported faults on the local exchange and the morning before he arrived the IP profile had already been reset to a more usable level. Rang the call centre again today and after wasting about an hour trying to explain the problem then waiting for him to check things and call me back, then explaining the same thing over again, absolutely nothing has been resolved and they want to send out another engineer.
I have a couple of very simple questions which the customer services team seem incapable of answering:
1. what is the reason for my IP profile being set so low?
2. what needs to be done to fix it now?
3. what needs to be done to stop it happening again?
I don't think the guy I spoke to actually knows what an IP profile is, let alone how to resolve a problem with it. What is the point of a technical support helpline when the staff quite obviously have no technical knowledge?!Have spent another hour of my life on the phone to BT helpline this afternoon.
Apparently the reason we hadn't received the call back yesterday was due to a "technical issue" at their end and the request had not been passed on to the engineer team.
Having gone through exactly the same conversation and process as on Tuesday, the helpline chap has run his tests and when pressed told me that he could determine no faults on the line. An engineer might be able to determine other faults though so he would like to book an appointment for an engineer to call.
Unfortunately, even though I've waited 2 days for this already because they didn't pass on the engineer request the other day, they can't do anything to prioritise the call so I've now got to wait up to another 48hrs for somebody to ring me to book the appointment. As its Thursday now, that probably means that it could Monday before that happens and therefore probably the middle of next week before the engineer actually gets to the house. So another week of broadband that is barely faster than dial up. -
Yet, another Motion crashing thread
Same story, one day it works, the next it doesn't. I'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a Mac Book Pro. Latest version on FC Studio 2 and Motion 3.0.2.
Motion opens and then as soon as I choose a project setting it goes to an importing screen and crashes. I've never had so many problems with a piece of software crashing so much than I have with Motion.
Just glad I have After Effects also.

Yet another x64 xfi thread... finally Beta Driv
Ok, a mate of mine told me that are some Beta xfi drivers out. If this is true, then maybe xp64 drivers will be out soon. What i cant understand is why release beta drivers for a Beta OS, when there is a commercial OS that needs a decent driver. Is there any news of some beta x64 drivers comingsoon. Reason i am wanting these drivers

Btw, they work on windows 64 , just run the setup let it unpack when it moans about not vista
dont cancel but copy paste the dir it unpacked , then hit the cancel button because
the stupid exe deletes the unpacked folder when you cancel. Go to the dir
it unpacked and hit the setup button in the driver folder.
Let it install, reboot and then put ur install cd in and run the install
do not install the drivers from the cd but install any utils you want
and the system will now have windows 64 drivers and all the utils -
Yet another organizing aperture thread
I saw some fantastic posts. I read them, but would love some personal advice. I am not a pro so I don't think in terms of organizing for clients or publishing. I basically upgraded to aperture for some pretty basic reasons:
Books are more flexible
Slideshows can use movies
Editing is in aperture does most of what I would need.
The issue: I can't get my head around an organizing principle. I have not brought in iPhoto pics yet. However all new imports are to aperture. So now i have a list of projects by date. Literally date of pics taken is name of project. Considering i take 99 percent pics of family, friends, dog etc. What would make sense for the top line folder. Ie parent folder? Do you do things like home, vacations or keep with date and make parent folder 2011. all projects and albums would then go into 2011.
Advice and thoughts welcome. I know it's personal, but I can't get my head around it.My system is
Top Folder for year
Inside Projects for specific events of the year - vacations, Xmas etc., then consolidated projects for the flotsam and jetsam: 'Spring 10, Winter 09 - that sort of thing.
I do, however, use keywords a lot and this gives me some excellent Smart Albums drawn from the the entire Library - for the kids, for instance.
