Yet another Superdrive Won't Work Post

Hello...
I tried to restart or update the FIRMWARE by starting the computer and going through a process of holding down keys.
That didn't work.
I them opened up the eMac and pushed the reset button (PMU or PMI, I think it's called).
That didn't work.
I am just wondering what I need to do to fix this because, granted my eMac is 5 years old, but now it won't recognize any DVDs or CDs, and it did before I started all this. Well, it recognized CDs.
At first the only DVDs it didn't recognize where ones I'd burned from home movies. Now it's all DVDs.
I am in Mac OS 10.3.9. I have 1 GB of Ram. It's an 800mhz Power PC.
I am open to any ideas at this point.
I thank you kindly in advance for reading helping with this.

First thing to do is run your system through basic maintenance routines. Here is a good page detailing many of the free ones you can download and what they do...
Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance
http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html
You especially want to run the CRON scripts and repair disk permissions.
If that doesn't help, next thing you might try is to create a new user account then log onto that one and see if the drive acts any differently. If it works, then the problem isn't the drive, but something with the settings of the other user account.
Still another test is to whip out your old Restore/Install discs that came with the computer and see if you can boot off of those (hold down the C key while booting). If you can, then you know the drive works at least. If you can't, maybe the drive really is dead.
Also I ran across this completely crazy fix that there are multiple reports it actually works to get a Superdrive working again...
* Open system preferences.
* Go to international
* Under languages: drag any of the other languages to the top, then drag english back to the top.
* Make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to enlish
* Make sure "work break" is set to english(united states, computer)
* Restart the computer

  • Apple USB Superdrive won't work

I just bought an Apple USB Superdrive. I works fine with a macbook air but if I plug it in to a 15" Macbook Pro either a Core 2 Duo or an Early 2008 model it won't work. The optical disc is not admitted when I try to insert it.
    I'm using OS X 10.5
    Any suggestions please ?

Ridiculous! I suppose it's all part of the business stategy to force you to upgrade even though the kit you have is still doing everything you want of it.
But I wonder is there a way of doing something in 'Terminal' mode to get other macs to accept the superdrive?

  • Yet another Itunes won't open, but shows in TAsk Manager

Yesterday I was loading some new music into itunes (6.0.1 I believe), when the application froze. I ended task on it and tried to restart. I got busy and forgot that I opened it, but when things slowed down I noticed that the GUI was not in my taskbar. My computer was REALLY slow, so I check Task Manager and it saw Itunes listed, taking 40meg of memory and 99% of the CPU. I could do nothing to get it to work. THERE IS NO ERROR MESSAGE DISPLAYED! I get the agreement screen, and a quick hourglass, but then nothing except a very slow system.
    Steps taken so far:
    - Removed Itunes and quicktime using recommended method from apple.com. This invloved deleting temp files, itunes and quicktime folders, etc.
-Reinstalled both quicktime and itunes 7.0.1.
-Searched for malware with AVG spyware remover.
-Scraped registry after YAU(yet another uninstall)
-REmoved music folder of the album i was loading.
I am running Win2003 Server with Network Associates Virus Scan Enterprise edition. I do have admin rights on my local machine, even though it is a work machine.
Please, any help would be appreciated. This is really swinging the love-hate Apple relationship back to hate.
Not really, but I am sad.

I solved this myself. Very strange...but the CD I was trying to burn the itunes first crashed was still in the CD drive. So I guess it kept trying to read it...and locked up.

  • Superdrive won't work

This morning my Superdrive on my 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac won't recognize my Sony CD-R 700MB blank disc.  It's worked before.  Yesterday, I burned a memorex DVD+R with no problem.  Is this something that can be fixed by me through some software tweak?  Or, does it require a trip to the Apple Store?

They do fail and they also get dirty and need to be repaired. However  your machine may simply need a basic reset. Please do both SMC and PRAM resets, do 2-3 each. If you don't know how please click https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603 for instructions.
In the event that does not work go to your local office supply store and buy a CD/DVD cleaning kit and clean the drive. Finally if that doesn't work a trip to the Apple Store may be required. BTW if the machine is covered by AppleCare give AppleCare a call.

  • Yet another Applications/OS X quitting post

I have read every message on this forum dealing with this problem and tried every suggestion, but nothing yet has work. I've had my MacBook for a week now (And just switched over from a PC. Sucky to be having this trouble right away) and I have already had to get my hard drive reimaged, which was done yesterday. Before Saturday, when it kept crashing during start up, hence the reimaging, it worked perfectly. Since it was reimaged though, my programs and OS X keep shutting down on me. I haven't downloaded anything outside of MSN and Adium, which I got from the Apple website. I have tried resetting the NVRAM and everything else. This problem has been happening with all of my programs, not just what I've downloaded.
Since I get my laptop through my school, I don't have the Install disk, because they decided we don't need to have them or a paper manual. Is there anything else that can be done, short of going into Tech Services at 7.30am tomorrow, to fix the problem? This is extra frustrating for me since my roommate got her MacBook the same day and has had no problems. I think I've angered the PC gods from switching.

Yea, I was wondering if it could have just be the computer. It's been behaving itself since I made that post though (as is the case for most problems) and hopefully it'll continue to work. When it works properly I like it though, even though I still need to get used to the differences. (The Dock just isn't the same as Window's toolbar. I miss it.)
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Help please!! -- Another iTunes won't work thread.

My iTunes has suddenly stopped working, here are the details:
    -Windows XP Home Edition
    -Norton System Works
There are some VERY strange 'symptoms':
When I run iTunes, the task manager shows it in the PROCESSES list (itunes.exe), yet not on the APPLICATIONS list.
ALSO, when I try to end the process, it doesn't end. NO error messages, no nothing. The confirmation comes up, I hit ok, and the process just stays there.
Another problem is that after I run iTunes, I can no longer launch any other application. Even things that were once running (ie firefox.exe), once closed, can not be opened. (By this, I mean they become like iTunes, and appear only in the processes list). I am forced into completely restarting the computer to use any program that is not open.
    -Steps already tried-
    1. Scanned for Spyware/Adware using fully updated Spybot S&D, Adaware, and SpywareBlaster.
    2. Full System Scan with fully updated Norton System Works (Norton Anti Virus)
    3. Disabled every part of Norton, then uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes.
    -same exact problems still arise-
Quicktime works fine, just the iTunes which causes problems, all other applications open and close fine.
-Thank you in advance for any support and suggestions-

Norton System Works consists of Norton Protection Center:
    One Button Checkup
    Norton Utilities
    Norton Antivirus
    and Norton Ghost
There is no firewall, as in no "personal firewall" feature.
When I disabled Norton to try and reinstall, I completely disabled every feature including "Internet worm protection" and "Spyware Protection" (which is a part of Norton Antivrus)

  • Yet another cocoa without interface builder post

I am sure its been brought up before. I would like to know if its possible to write Cocoa apps without Xcode, Interface Builder, or NIB files in general; another words, write Cocoa programs programmatically using ONLY Objective C. Before you ask me why I would want to do such a thing and that I am crazy, please hear me out.
I come from a Win32 background, and my primary languages are C and C++. I am getting used to Objective C (though I wish I could use C++ to program in Cocoa). I picked up a copy of Cocoa(R) Programming for Mac(R) OS X (3rd Edition) by Aaron Hillegass, and have been trying to learn cocoa from it for the last few months. Basically, I am having big trouble wrapping my mind around cocoa via the very conceptual high level approach this book takes. I can not for the life of me begin to understand this whole making connections with interface builder.
I do NOT plan to write production applications in cocoa by hand, but if I could just write a few trivial applications in cocoa by hand without interface builder or nib files, perhaps when I do use interface builder, I won't have such a hard time understanding whats going on.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't care. Your question isn't about learning how to program and learning via the iPhone SDK. I'll do anything I can for you

Certainly. You can write command-line Cocoa apps. Xcode is just an IDE like Visual Studio.
Before you ask me why I would want to do such a thing and that I am crazy, please hear me out.

You specifically asked to avoid the topic, but I'm sure there are several of us who are really tired of iPhone questions who would be happy to try our hand at explaining the User Interface architecture in Cocoa - if you want to try.
I do NOT plan to write production applications in cocoa by hand, but if I could just write a few trivial applications in cocoa by hand without interface builder or nib files, perhaps when I do use interface builder, I won't have such a hard time understanding whats going on.
You can write Objective-C programs using whatever editor and IDE/makefile you want. You can even work with all the non-UI parts of Cocoa to get a feel of how it works. Technically, you could write code using only Carbon and never use Objective-C, but that is really a dead-end.
A good idea might be start looking at doing writing MacOS X kernel extensions. You should still use Xcode, but only as an IDE. The code would all be C++ (or a subset thereof) with no user interface or NIB files. Realistically, that is probably harder than learning Interface Builder, but it is probably the most productive path available to you for developing MacOS X and avoiding Interface Builder.

  • Yet Another Exchange won't sync Calendar

This is not a question but an answer, most appropriate to add to thread 7713558 but that is closed.
I had my Outlook email, calendar and contacts sync'd and of course made the mistake to also sync it with itunes getting double entries. Removing the contacts and calendar on the iTouch however would leave all birthday events still in the calendar. Since it is easier for me to work on Unix than on iTunes I jailbroke the Touch and following an available instruction SSH'd in and copied /private/var/mobile/Library/Calendar/Calendar.sqlitedb to my PC and edited it with sql to remove the birthdays and placed the calendar back on the iTouch. Now since then it wouldnt sync my calendar. Still would have the contacts and the email. However when trying to fix it, I removed the account and recreated it, rebooted the iTouch - no email no contacts no calendar.
Then I SSH'd back into the Touch and copied the old calendar file in - be it with another name. I then tried to delete the existing calendar.sqlitedb which it wouldnt let me do and then I renamed it. To my big surprise I suddenly saw 3 calendars: the renamed, the backup from the PC and a brand new calendar.sqlitedb with a lot more bytes!! Suddenly als email came in and contacts were there.
I must admit that in the meantime I also switched local syncing off and on with itunes but that only resulted in outlook sync crashes. When I reconnected the iTouch to itunes I immediately stopped the syncing and unchecked the local contacts, calendar and email. I rebooted the Touch. It is all a bit messy in terms of procedure but I dont want to take away the reality of problem finding and dont know exactly what the right procedure is. But I think renaming the calendar was the trick that did it.
One more thing about Exchange syncing. Even when having all the username domain etc fields inputted right then in my case it was still necessary to send an email to my Exchange admin to request enabling mobile access!! You can imagine how many times I tried different settings! D**n it!
I like the iTouch because it is such a lovely Unix computer but it hasnt been one bit easier learning to squeeze this device into my day to day needs than exploring Ubuntu for the first time.

Reset sync history. On a mac open isync then choose preferences and reset sync history. Be sure to back up your iPhone also before this happens. Are you sure that you don't have manually manage music and video checked underneath the options page when you first open iTunes? This could also possibly hinder your ability to sync over music.

  • Yet another Crashing iPhoto, but works in another account

iPhoto crashes on start up, the report log gives this bit of information
    Thread 4 Crashed:
    0 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x0150a5c4 0x1505000 + 21956
    1 com.apple.MediaBrowser 0x3e6622cc -[MediaGrabberiTunes _loadMusicThreaded] + 636

    3 libSystem.B.dylib 0x01e14d08 0x1de9000 + 179464
I have searched thru this forum and done a Google search on iPhoto crashes.
I have Verfied the drive using Techtools - this corrects any errors in the file system. I have corrected the permissions.
I have removed the iPhoto library and the crash still occurs.
I have created a new account on the system and iPhoto runs ok when started from the new account.
What has changed since I last remember using it in March, I have updated iTunes and I believe iPhoto and also OSX and added an iPod for synching with iTunes, and the pictures in iPhoto.
Fortunately I do not use iPhoto for storing my photos, I use Finder and a series of date related folders and use either Qpict or Preview for slideshows.
I only use iPhoto for when I want to put images on Home page or transfer viewable images to the iPod - so this is not a life crisis issue but I would like to get it fixed.
So please can any one suggest any other activities I should do to get iPhoto working.
    Thanks for any comments

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First delete your iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, from your User/Library/Preferences folder. If that doesn't help then it may be another preference file in your Preference folder. Here's a method to see if it's one of the other files;
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Salvaged superdrive won't work

I recently salvaged a superdrive from an early 2011 Macbook Pro that was water damaged.  Only the logic board was damaged, so the superdrive should be fine.  I bought an enclosure from ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/151232844986 and fitted the drive.
However it will not register on my new MacBook Pro Retina, or on an old MacBook 13"
I've added the line to the .plist file that I read about, but this does not help either.
Are there any tricks to getting this to work?
    Cheers.

First, how do you know for sure it wasn't water damaged?
There aren't any tricks. If you have the cables plugged in correctly, the drive should work. If the drive is good, I'd suspect the ebay enclosure.

  • Yet another 'iPhone won't sync' thread

As the title says, my iPhone won't sync selected playlists from the iTunes library. It used to work just fine and then it stopped working. It goes through the syncing routine, but never shows the "Copying 1 of 1145: Song Name" that you expect to see when syncing. It finishes without error, but when I check the phone, there is still no new music on it. Syncing 'All Songs and Playlists' does seem to work. But I need Selected Playlists. Phone is 3.0.1, itunes is 8.2.1.
    What I have tried:
    Restoring phone
    Updated iTunes today
    Force quit iTunes trick
    All combinations of rebooting
    any ideas?

Reset sync history. On a mac open isync then choose preferences and reset sync history. Be sure to back up your iPhone also before this happens. Are you sure that you don't have manually manage music and video checked underneath the options page when you first open iTunes? This could also possibly hinder your ability to sync over music.

  • Blue Yeti Pro Microphone won't work with iMovie or Photobooth :(

I have my Yeti Pro connected to my macbook pro (version 10.6.8) that I use with my beats studio headphones. Whenever I record myself in garage band with the mic and the headphones, the audio sounds crystal clear. Whenever I record myself in iMovie or Photo Booth, with the headphones and the Yeti mic, the audio becomes all buzzy and poppy and the sound comes in and out. It sounds awful. In iMovie I made sure to select the Blue USB audio 2.0 option for the voiceover sound option, but the same thing happens. I don't want to have to record my video seperately from my audio and then edit them to match up later.
    Please Help!
    Thank you

    Hi Kevin,
    Two suggestions:
    Make sure that the camcorder is connected to a power outlet, not running just on battery power;
As alluded to by thesurreyfriends, try a different FireWire cable. If you have a Rocketfish cable, it has been known to cause problems. I have a Belkin 9 pin to 4 pin (FW 800/400) which works perfectly with iMovie '11, using my older Sony DCR-TRV20E.

EDIT: I don't have a Thunderbolt port on my earlier model MacBook Pro, so my situation is different to yours.

I can only seem to find an update for the superdrive of the 15" imac. Can anyone tell me if one exists for the 17"? I can't understand why there would be such a difference. I tried using the 15" fix to no avail. Is it possible for me to change the internal superdrive myself or do i need special tools to open the case to install it?

I get the black screen when i try to startx. i followed the wiki entry to set up X, but it doesn't work. Now, what i want to know is, how do i go back on a fresh install to an older version of X, that *doesn't* use HAL?

It happened to me too. I use LXDE and everything was fine until last X.org update (prior to today's) when the blank screen started happening after every restart. I discovered that if I edit /etc/xdg/lxsessions/LXDE/autostart file as root and close it, even without changing anything, not resaving the file, not doing anything to it, then I was able to enter to X with startx as always. Weird, isn't it?
Afortunately, today I've updated my x.org server and seems everything is fine again.

  • Yet another MPC 1000 L7 Sync post

i searched through the forum archives and didnt find the sync problem im having with my particular setup. im trying to slave the mpc from logic and have the mpc output signal its coaxial spdif.
im using a m-audio 410, logic 7 (duh), and the MPC 1k. i have the midi connected (midi out from the 410 to in the MPC) and the spdif out from the MPC to the 410 spdif in. i set my song settings appropriatly in logic, and the sync stuff appropriatly in the MPC.
now when i hit play in L7, the MPC starts, but the SPL in logic doesnt move at all. and on top of it all, the MPC doesnt read "EXT" like its suppose to in slave mode.
the odd thing is when i do this same setup with the analog outputs, everything works hunky dory.
anybody out there have the same problem?

To be clear, if you pull the spdf out at the interface end does the sync up work? Maybe your interface is seeing the spdf as the master clock or something.
