YIKES Photos disappeared from iPhoto AND Elements

Why are my pictures no longer appearing in my iPhoto program since I downloaded Photoshop Elements 12 to my MAC and imported all my photos? Only boundary boxes exist where the old photo used to be.
I tried restoring those files from my "Time Machine" backup, but this did not solve the problem.
ALSO...
I decided to create "catalogs" out of my folders. Perhaps this was a big mistake as I tried to do it intuitively. I selected a folder, then chose "new catalog. I found myself with a dialogue box that had no "cancel" option, so I went ahead and created a new catalog selecting some random pictures and figuring I could delete it later. Oops. WHOA! Now the only this new folder is visible. WHERE are the other picture/folders that existed prior to the creation of this new one? How can I access them?  I do not have a backup of the files to restore.
Thirdly, when I WAS able to see all the media and scrolled I noticed that there are still duplicates (even though I thought I had previously and tediously deleted them). Is there a way to actually, purely and simply, delete duplicates?
Fourthly, and lastly (for now) just a comment that I was quite surprised by how many "face shots" Elements created out of a simple import. It seems that most of the photos had faces extracted and enlarged. Kinda cool, but not what I asked for.
Anyway, I'd sure like to find see the photos in tact. If you can help, I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks for listening.
Warm regards,
Zangmo

You totally rock!!! thank you, Barbara. Just ignorance of the program on my part. I knew I did not delete the originals (only a few that I did not want anyway). It seems so simple in hindsight. Problem solved, at least for elements. I need to study the manual! I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
I know where all the photos are so I wasn't too freaked out. Understanding that all is impermanent, I'll go with the flow and re-import iPhoto pictures.
Thanks a million,
Zangmo

First i imported my photos to iphoto 8.1.2 when it finished, asked me if i want to "delete them from the camara"  i clicked yes and crashed while deleting  photos (7,000) from my iphone and the photos disappeared from iphone and iphoto

No early version of iPhoto can open a Library from a later version.
You can try revert the Library with iPhoto Library Manager

I'm out of space on my hard drive. How do I move move entire photo albums from iphoto and save them to an external drive to free up space?

You do not move the albums - you move the entire iphoto library intake as a single entity
Make sure your external drive is formatted Ma OS extended (journaled) - then
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Albums /photos "disappear" from Iphoto 08

    Hello
I used Iphoto 08 for many years.
Recently I need to send some photos taken in 2004/2005 to some friends.
Unfortunately, I notice that some albums "disappear" from Iphoto 08.
I don't think I have deleted them by accident or whatsoever .
So, what is the cause and is there any way of "recuperating" these albums ?
Many thanks for your advice, help !
    MY gene

    James:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What exactly are you referring to by the "burn folder" feature on Tiger? Did you create a folder on the desktop and then move the iPhoto Library folder from the Pictures folder into the one on the desktop? If that's what you did and then deleted that folder from the desktop you have deleted all of your photos. The iPhoto Library folder that you now see in the Pictures folder was created when you launched iPhoto the next time and it will be empty.
If you haven't used you computer much since then you may be able to undelete those photos with Data Rescue or SubRoas File Salvage. Use you're computer as little as possible until you've had a chance to run one of these applications.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Photos disappeared from Library and Rebuilding with iPhoto Libr. Mgr worse

    1. For several days, when I attempted to transfer photos from Iphoto to Ofoto, the programs would freeze and I couldn't do the transfer.
    2. When that problem disappeared, I created a few small albums, uploaded them on Ofoto, and sent them out via the Kodak website.
    3. A day or so later, I found that those albums in iPhoto, as well as one in Iphoto that I had NOT uploaded to Ofoto, were empty--no photos. I discovered that all the photos were in the trash.
    4. I selected the "trashed" photos and put them into the Photo Library. They then re-appeared in their original albums.
    5. After this, I discovered that the "last roll" file (uploaded from the camera) within the past couple of days was blank. These photos were NOT in the trash.
After these events, and following advice I saw in this Forum, I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and rebuilt the Library. During the course of the rebuilding a single error message appeared during "Merge," concerning one of the albums in the Library (I clicked "skip") and 13 error messages during "Adding photos to album" (I clicked "skip"). At the end of the rebuilding there was an error message "2817 photos succdessfully copied. 80 photos could not be copied because they could not be found in Library." (They were listed in the Console of Applications/Utilities.)
In addition to losing those 80 photos (all the new ones in Last Roll), the remaining photos are scattered more or less randomly in the different albums.
Any suggestions on how to retrieve those 80 lost photos and unscramble the mess?

Sorry - guess I missed your post somehow
    1. When you say trash the IPLM library, you mean the folder called "Rebuilt Library" that is in the Finder/Pictures, right?
Yes - as I understand it the rebuild library is worse than the original one
    2. Any suggestions on how to back up the iPhoto library?
Copy it somewhere - just have a copy before you start so if things go wrong you still have what you started with - drag it to an external drive or select it and duplicate it - just do it as one operation not in small pieces
    3. Since I'm using iPhoto 4.0.3, I think I have to launch the program holding Tab and alt keys; is this right?
Probably - I frankly do not remember back to iPhoto 4 for this detail - using the wrong key combination will not create a problem

  • IPhoto nightmare. Tried to import photos using Nikon software for the first time and all my photos disappeared from iPhoto 8.1.2 (and everything from itunes too). Newly reinstalled iPhoto crashes as soon as I import anything now.

Macbook OSX 10.5.8, iPhoto 8.1.2. I just tried to import some photos using Nikon software (View NX2) for the first time. When I next looked into iPhoto it was empty (so was iTunes but that's another story). I had backed up photos fairly recently but don't use time machine. Searched in vain everywhere and must have done something wrong because iPhoto wouldn't then open at all, saying it was unreadable. After a lot more attempts to recover I uninstalled iPhoto and the receipts and reinstalled from my original disc. It seemed to be ok and imported some photos from my iphone but as soon as the import is complete iPhoto crashes and when opened again it is empty. Have tried this several times and have shut down and have tried rebuilding with the alt and cmd buttons but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?

not a reply but not sure how to add something to my own thread! It seems that Desktop was damaged too as when I try to open it a screen says there is no application selected to open Desktop with. No idea what I should choose! Any help appreciated, have really made a mess of my MacBook this time.

  • How do I save a photo exported from iPhoto and edited in Photoshop Elements 6 back to iPhoto?

My photos are downloaded to my iMac iPhoto 09.  I am able to export directly to Photoshop Elements '06 to edit but when I try to export the edited photo back to iPhoto it goes to Pictures, not to iPhoto where I want it to go.  Any suggestions?

Did you really export it or did you set PSE as your external editor? If you used file>export in iphoto, then you must import the edited photo back to iphoto as a new file.
To avoid that you can set PSE as your external editor in the iphoto preferences, and iphoto will remember your last saved edits + original, but you must not change the name or format of the image when saving. If you see the save as window it won't work. You may need to go to the PSE preferences>saving files and set On First Save to save over existing to avoid seeing the save as window. It will not work with raw files.

  • Photos disappeared from iPhoto Application

Help! I have had about six months worth of photos disappear when I open iPhoto. The photos still exist in the files system in the iPhoto folder, but aren't showing up when I open the application. I have tried rebuilding the library database, recovering orphan photos and rebuilding my cache - with no luck. I mean the pictures still exisit, which is good but I hate to lose all the metadata (tags, titles, ratings, etc). Any suggestions??
    Thanks!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

None of that stuff works if the location of the pictures was changed, even accidentally.
Check if you have this hierarchy in your iPhoto library:
    iPhoto Library
    Originals
    200<y>
    Roll <x>
    Modified
    200<y>
    Roll <x>
    Data
    200<y>
    Roll <x>
The <y> would be the year number, I mean 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 etc - if you have a photo from that year, there will be a folder for that year.
The <x> would be some incremental roll number, e.g. Roll 1, Roll 2, Roll 3 and so on. Sometimes the rolls seem to skip, i.e. start with a much higher number - Roll 150, Roll 151, etc. Every time you import there's a new roll.
The photos would disappear, if, for example, you moved the 2006 folder from Originals to the 2005 folder. See if that's the case and post back.

  • Photos disappearing from iPhotos

I recently upgraded to iOS7 on my iPhone.  I currently use iPhoto to sync various albums that I created on that program to organize my photos on my iPhone.  Problem is I recently noticed that my pictures on these albums are disappearing from both my iPhone and in the iPhoto program.  Has anyone encountered this before?  I never had this problem before until I upgraded to iOS7 and don't know if the two issues are related.

  • Photos disappeared from IPhoto

I have an imac with Lion and am a new mac user.
I had my library of photos on an external ppc formatted hard drive, and over the last few weeks since I bought the mac have loacded new photos.
Mostly this was by plugging in a camera or phone and importing to IPhoto.
These events were combined with my external photos in Iphoto.
To simplyfy things I have dragged all the photos from the external hard drive into "pictures".
After I had done this I noticed that the phoptos that I have imported directly to Iphoto previously had gone.
I have searched for a known event folder using spot light with no success.
I have looked through the photos in date order to see if I had dragged a couple of folders in to each other but had no success.
I'm sure they are there somewhere!
    Can anyone help??
    Thanks,
    Stu

I haven't a formal "backup" due to the mac being so new and having a workshop to help me understand it better next week.
However, All the photo ups to buying the mac are intact. They are just in the folders on the external hard drive that was formatted for my previous PC.
I have no concern for albums, keywords etc..
None of my photos have been edited and I have n idea what the impact is of not having a link between previews and originals so am not sure that is the concern.
I have noticed that I seem to have duplicates of pretty much every media managed on the IMac.
I have an itunes folder inside my itunes folder for example, so was keen to tidy up. Hence my attempt at consolidation.
Is it possible that in dragging photos into the "pictures" folder I have copied over the photos I had imported directly to the IMac?
I don't know where to look for them and am at a complete loss.

  • Crashes during a session and also photos disappear from page and also in Face Book

No more information other than photos or pictures disappear from any website page including when using Face Book. Also noticed that even Google Logo above search box disappears including the green arrow for returning to previous page or next page. Firefox also crashes during sessions and a widow message appears advising of the crash and requesting to send this on so the problem can be fixed. I have sent this crash report on numerous occasions but have not had any responses yet and the problem continues. Sometimes it works fine for a few days and then down it goes with same issues as mentioned above.

It is possible that you clicked "Block Images" in the right-click context menu while saving an image.
    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Images_or_animations_do_not_load
You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
    * Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
    * Click the favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
    * Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
    * Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
    * Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
    * If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • All photos disappeared from iphoto

I went to bed last night leaving my iphoto to upload 300 pictures to a mobile me gallery, when i can to my machine this morning all photos gone,
i have run my library from my time capsule, i have tried to open from my TC and nothing, any ideas what has happened ?

What connection do you have to the TC? Wired or Wireless?
As to recovery: My guess is that your Library db is damaged:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • All my photos disappeared from iPhoto!

They were there earlier today. I was editing on iMovie and went to iPhoto to pull a picture over for the movie and there were absolutely no photos nor any of the folders I'd created over the years. There was some kind of greeting screen when I fired up iPhoto as if it was being used the first time. Is this the result of a virus? I backed up my disk but if there's an easier way of finding and restoring the original iPhoto library that would be best since I have about 4000 photos.

    Tribecajoe:
No, it's not a virus. Look in your Pictures folder and see if you have two iPhoto Library packages in there. If you do one may be named iPhoto Library_1. If you do select both, one at a time, and type Command+i to bring up the Info window. Move the library package that the smaller of the two to two the Desktop. Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select Find Library. Navigate to the Pictures folder and select the remaining library in there. If it has all of your photos, etc. you can then delete the library that you moved to the Desktop.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I have iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5). After copying my photos to an EHD my photos disappeared from iPhoto. Now when I open that library in iPhoto I can't access it. HELP!!

Following directions I found on the discussion groups, I moved (thought I was copying) my iPhoto library to an icon on my desktop Time Machine Backups which appeared after I connected my EHD. Went back to iPhoto to then trash the photos I didn't want on my IHD to free up space. There were no pictures. I have followed additional directions for accessing my library by opening iPhoto while holding down the option key. It then prompts me to choose a folder, I chose iPhoto Library 2 (as I named it) but my  iPhoto was still empty.
My intention was to keep one calendar year of photos on iPhoto while archiving the rest on my EHD. Can I do that? And, more importantly, how do I get my photos back!!
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I moved (thought I was copying) my iPhoto library to an icon on my desktop Time Machine Backups
Do you mean that you moved your iPhoto Library package to the drive that housed your Time Machine backups? That is is the EHD you're referring to the one used for your Time Machine?
Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
How many EHDs do you have? What are they used for?  You should not use the EHD that houses your Time Machine backups for any other purposes.

  • Photos disappear from Album and Photo webpages in iWeb after publishing.

I just installed iWeb 9. I made some great new photos albums and blogs and published. After 4 unsuccessful attempts and publishing errors, I finally got the new web pages published. When I go back into iWeb, the photos on the album page are gone. All the photos from the photos page are also gone! The Albums page, which had 10+ albums now has 1 space that says, "Drag album here."
The website shows the photos as I would expect. I thought this was a fluke, and started from scratch, recreated the pages, made sure my iWeb patches were up to date... Same thing... No photos in iWeb.
The Blog doesn't seem to have this problem. Only the Albums and Photos webpages.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
    1 - close iWeb.
2 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
3 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    4 - reboot.
5 - launch iWeb and try again.
