Yoga 13" - New Owner - Review

All,
I am new to this forum but the knowledge shared by other members was immensely helpful in deciding whether to purchase Yoga 13". I'm glad I purchased this laptop.
i7, 1.9GHz, 4.0 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD
Some pointers if in case other people are still evaluating:
Lenovo bloatware + Hard drive partitioning woes: Easily rectified, used the lenovo support site to download the partition patchfix. Removed all other pre-installed software with the exception of drivers/Energy Mgmt/Transition.
Fan Noise: Not at all loud for me. Hums away at a few decibels.
WiFi: No issues whatsoever, using the pre-installed wifi patchfix (also available on the lenovo website)
Weight: Can lift easily with one hand in 'normal laptop' mode. In 'Tablet' mode' its still definitely usable although after few minutes you would probably rest it on your lap. Keyboard-at-the-back 'weirdness' thats reported in some places in the tablet mode is not uncomfortable for me.
On Screen Keyboard: Very good. Missing 'arrow' 'scroll' keys which for some reason I found myself searching for always. Fairly Responsive.
Trackpad: Routinely misses about 10-20% of my 'gestures'. Installed latest synaptic driver from synaptic website(16.3.15.1) but that worsened the problem. My recommendation is to stick with lenovo provided latest drivers for trackpad (16.2.21.4). Trackpad scroll really weird on some sites(ex: google search results) - where it selects the text instead of scrolling (same even if you use the touch screen) on FireFox v20; works ok on IE 10. Two finger scroll satisfactory but not always responsive.
Windows 8 OS Windows Update issue: Wouldnt install any windows updates. As recommeded elsewhere, "run > msconfig > services > uncheck all non-windows/non-intel services and reboot and retry" approach worked for me. Re-enabled it after it installed the first set of updates and dont seem to have any issues with windows update now.
Laptop Boot time from shutdown (to login screen): <5 seconds.
I will be upgrading the RAM to 8GB and adding a second 256GB mSATA drive in a few days' time.
In some reviews, the fact that it is not a '1920 x 1080' screen was marked as a negative -- i dont find this an issue at all. HD videos look perfectly fine in full screen mode and for me its more than satisfactory.
Backlit keyboard (lack of it)- Major issue for me as I keep fumbling to see where the keys are at night. The supposedly 'flourescent' keys are not bright enough for me.
Battery Life: ~ 5h 30 mins on normal browsing/'office work'. Have not tested streaming videos on battery alone, yet.
Battery charge time: It does NOT seem to me that this has the lenovo rapidcharge feature in it (upto 80% charge in 30 mins time) -- for me it takes considerably longer, whilst simultaneously using the laptop, for it to charge from 50% - 80% (example scenario): ~50 mins. More testing probably needed to confirm.
Trackpad does get disabled when you tilt the screen beyond 180 degrees. However, for some reason, the keyboard sometimes stays active especially in 'tent' mode.
Keyboard key size/comfort: Very nice keyboard, slightly smaller keys than what i am used to. Typing errors due to small keys, in my case, is less than 10% of the words typed. Small backspace key not an issue for me. Function keys being merged with other hot keys (top row) not an issue for me so far.
Stylus input: Works fairly well on the touch screen with my Bamboo stylus. Although, the iPAD defintely seems to have a much better accuracy. Fantastic to use stylus with powerpoint/word documents to annotate, especially in tablet mode.
Brightness: I wanted a screen with very low 'minimum' brightness and this laptop is perfect. I use the laptop mostly in 'Min Brightness + 1 level' setting during the day and 'Min Brightness' setting during night.
Speakers: Decent sound, satisfied. For anything that is an aural extravaganza, I use a headphone.
Have not tested it as a gaming rig yet - but will update the review once I do.
Hopefully this should help those of you who are on the fence.
Use Cases:
Great device to read long PDFs on. a) Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat (desktop app, not the Metro app). b) Transform the Yoga into 'tablet mode' c) Hold the Yoga such that its in a 'portrait' tablet position. d) Within Adobe Acrobat, go to 'Read Mode' - Acrobat hides all the UI and gives you a full screen view of the PDF document. This way, I can see more than 1.5 pages in full length at 100% as its as though you have taken a printout of the document. Great way to read portrait textbooks or other documents without scrolling within a single page.

RE: Stylus, I am using the Wacom Bamboo stylus. I already had this stylus for my iPad so didnt bother purchasing another one just for Yoga.
I strongly suggest that you have a look at the various stylii reviewed here -> http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/10/2925937/best-stylus-ipad-review
(Obviously, the above may not be only/best review around; but this is what I consulted when purchasing the stylus I currently use.)
I have not used any other stylii apart from Bamboo. However, it seems like Adonit Jot Pro is the most accurate one, from a 'precision' perspective. But, looking at couple of reviews of it elsewhere on the web, it seems that some screens are susceptible to minute scratches when using Adonit; so I would definitely have a screen protector. Bamboo is fairly simple and works as advertised and since it has a normal rubber tip (albeit smaller than others, which I like), I dont have to worry about scratching the Yoga display. Like I mentioned in my first post, I think the iPad is much more responsive (in terms of the stylus 'pressure' and accuracy, compared with Yoga) but nevertheless it is usable. It looks like Windows comes in-built with a 'Journal' application which is specifically meant to support stylus. However, I personally am looking for something similar to an 'infinite canvas' application where I can have infinite white-board-like space to draw my thoughts/flowcharts etc. - this is to be researched in the Windows App Store whether such an app is available. (I used it regularly on my iPad)
Another use for the stylus I personally find is that I can use it whilst in Desktop mode to accurately 'hit' the small buttons/options/check-boxes on various windows without multiple retries, as would have been the case had I used my fingers.
RE:RAM, I really don't think you should spend too much time in evaluating whether 8Gigs will be beneficial or not, simply because the cost is fairly low (~$60) for the 8GB RAM stick with no additional installation/equipment costs. I dont know whether it has something to do with the Windows 8 updates I installed recently or not, but now my Yoga boots from shutdown state to the login screen in <2 seconds which is comparable to using a tablet device. I never imagined that a windows OS would be able to boot up that fast - however I suspect that the SATA III 6Gbps hard drive has something to do with it rather than the RAM. If you are running multiple RAM intensive applications at the same time(e.g. Eclipse for software development etc.), then it will be beneficial to have 8Gigs of RAM.
Hope this helps.

New owner here.  I see that in printing I can select one page and print same.  How do I select numerous pages from a document and print only those selected pages? I would not think that I can only select one page at a time.  Thanks much

Sold my wifi iPad and reset b4 selling
New owner can't sign into his Apple ID keeps asking for old (mine) Apple ID
Thought would have erased with resetting iPad

Hello, your iPad is 'Activation Locked' as a part of 'Find My iPad'.
Log onto www.icloud.com, go to 'Find My iPhone'. Then select 'All Devices', your old iPad will probably show here, select 'Remove from Account'.
If there is no option to 'Remove from Account' ask the current owner to switch iPad off for a while, and remove from account should show in 5 minutes or so.

  • I sold ipad2 verizon 3g but new owner can't register it under his name

I bought an ipad2 with verizon 3g. I never used the verizon connection nor ever registered it with verizon. I sold the ipad to a guy. He is trying to register it to verizon so he can use their 3g network but it tells him that it is still registered to me. I spoke with verizon and they said it is not registered, and never was, under my verizon account. I caled Bestbuy, where I purchased it and they said to contact apple. I have tried repeatedly to contact apple to change the registration and all I have been told was the new owner just needs to log into register.apple.com.  He has already done that before even contacting me. Any way to transfer ownership of the ipad to someone else so they can use it?

Yes, he went to a Verizon store. They were the one that told him to contact me to "disconnect" my service.  I told him not only did I not have service on it, I never registered it - with Verizon or apple. Verizon says they cannot even locate the product in their system to do anything if they could.
If anyone has been successful at this I would appreciate any advice. Flaming isn't proving your superiority in any way.

selling macbook Pro 2011. It came with Lion, I upgraded to mountain Lion and Mavericks. Can license be transfer to new owner? how?

Good question now that Mavericks is free to all.
It used to be - and is probably still the case - that to comply with the license you should erase and re-install the OS that came pre-installed on the Mac when new. If there were restore disks they needed to be passed on with the Mac.
I'm happy to be corrected on this by someone who's more au fait with the legalese, but an upgraded OS is tied to an AppleID whereas the original OS is tied to the computer, not an AppleID.
My guess is, that if you launched the Recovery HD, erased the drive using Disk Utility and re-installed the OS, Lion would be installed.
Be interesting to see what others say.

  • Help: New owner of my iPhone getting prompted for my iTunes account.

My wife is now using my old computer and iPhone 3g.
    1. In iTunes on the PC, she is logged in.
    2. iTunes says she has one app to upgrade.
    3. Clicking upgrade, iTunes then shows her account name and says there are no apps to upgrade.
    4. Go back to iTunes home page and it says she has one app to upgrade.
    5. My account is actually the account with 1 app to upgrade.
    1. On the iPhone, under settings she is listed as the current account.
    2. Try to buy an app from the app store and she gets prompted for my App store account.
Has anyone seen this before? I'm at a loss as to how the two accounts are intermingled like this. Everywhere I look she is listed as the active account. But as soon as an upgrade or purchase is attempted it goes back to my account.
    Thank you in advance,
    Gary

You can do this on your iPad or iPhone - please see Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account - Apple Support (which is written from the point of view of the new owner).

  • I am selling my apple mac pro but do not know how to deregister and register it to the new owner; how do you do this?

I am selling my apple mac pro but do not know how to deregister and register it to the new owner; how do you do this?

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall  an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer with the machine.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

Before beginning the download, try temporarily disabling your antivirus, anti-adware, anti-spyware, and any other anti-whatever that is required with the secure OS your computer is running.

  • Transferring AppleCare to a new owner

I purchased an MBP from the Apple store around August when my state held a tax holiday, but due to indecision ended up not using the product at all. I know this is going to sound pretty weird, but it's sitting in my home sealed in its original packaging. I'm considering selling it on eBay, and I'm wondering if the new owner will have just one half of the original one year of Apple Care, or if there's a way for them to have a full year since the computer is technically new. Thanks.

Applecare starts from the date of purchase, not from the date that the box is opened.
    Ciao.

  • How to prepare MacBook for new owner?

I'm selling my Intel MacBook Pro and I would like to restore it to factory-new condition for the new owner.
I know how to install OS X from the included discs, but after the installation it launches right into the first-time setup (name, registration, network configuration, etc.).
I don't want to do this setup — that's information for the new owner to key in. But I see no way to exit out of it gracefully, so should I just power down the machine at this point? I assume the next time it's started (by the new owner) it will simply try the first-time setup again.
Is there a more graceful way to exit the installation and shut down the machine without doing the first-time setup?
    Thanks.

Wow, this is really great. Exactly what I was looking for, except that I'm not sure I have another volume (e.g., FireWire drive) I can boot from to delete the administrator account.
If the timing works out such that my new laptop arrives before I have to ship the old one, then I'll be all set.
    Thanks.

  • How do I transfer registration to new owner ?

I am selling my powerbook and need to know how to transfer the registration to the new owner as well as the Quickbooks NUE registration.
    Any help will be apreciated.

Unless you are transferring an APP with your PowerBook, there is nothing you need to do. Of course, it would be a courtesy to the new owner to hand over the original bill of sale/receipt for the PowerBook, but the warranty is dependent on the date of first sale which is attached to the serial number on the machine and not to the machine's original owner.
If you have an APP, you would need to follow the steps delineated in paragraph 6 of the Terms and Conditions:
    6. Transfer of Plan
You may transfer this Plan to a new owner of the Covered Equipment by sending or faxing notice of transfer to AppleCare Administration, P.O. Box 149125, Austin, TX 78714–9125, U.S. (fax number 512–674–8125). You must provide the Plan Agreement Number, the serial numbers of the Covered Equipment being transferred, proof of purchase of the Plan, and the name, address, telephone number and email address of the new owner.
You would have to read the EULAs for any third-party software to learn how to transfer those items to a new owner.

  • How to delete current owner/admin account and create a new owner/admin acct

I am the owner and only user of my G5. I've owned it since 2007 when it was new.
I need to delete my current account and establish a new owner/admin account. When completed the new owner/admin account should be the only account on the machine.
    Can anyone offer some help.
    Thanks

    Here's the deal..
I own a software titled "Kinemac". It's a 3D animation software which creates QT movies to import into Final Cut Pro. I've had the software since last April and about a month ago, all of a sudden, the program would no longer open. I contacted Kinemac's Support. They said my computer had apparently been "banned" by the software. (Maybe it saw the computer as trying to pirate the program.?????)
I tried downloading a new copy of the software, reinstalled, entered serial#, etc. and still would not open. There was no crash. It just would not open.
Kinemac said its only way to correct the problem was to enter into a screen share with iChat. I tried for 20 minutes with them to establish screen share with no luck. We could "chat" but not screen share. So, I came to the Apple Discussions pages on iChat and spent about an hour with a Discussions' User on iChat with NO luck there either. I gave up on iChat. Not certain I wanted someone unknown on a screen share anyway.
Which brings us to this point. Kinemac says I can also add a new Admin Acct. Delete the current Admin and then rename the new user with the old user's name. I frankly don't want to mess around doing that but apparently there's alternative for Kinemac. So that's why I'm seeking info on how to do it. I really like the software and want to rectify the situation.
Hope this explains the situation. Thanks.

  • Prep for sale or new owner

I have a iMac Core 2 Duo, 7 years old, running Yosemite. I want to give it away to a charity. I need to get all my personal information off first. How do I do this. I already did an erase and reinstall. It doesn't do the trick because when it gets to the install, it needs a WI-FI connection. As soon as I connect to my WI-FI, it finds my name and puts in all my personal information including accounts, passwords, etc. I don't want that to happen. Please, tell me there is a way. I've had several Macs previously, but, don't recall having this problem. It's been seven years since I got a new Mac.  As soon as I put my Apple store account information in, it makes me the Administrator of the iMac. iCloud seems to be the problem. Can't I just get a blank system with no user information? What does one do to sell an iMac to a stranger? Please help.

    Hi oduinnin,
Good on you for deciding to give your mac to charity and what a good season to do it in.
The best way to have NO personal data on the device is to completely wipe the device and then NOT touch it, do not add wifi info, just leave it.
The whole purpose of this screen is so that the new owner can configure it to his/her standards. If you do not fill this in all the data will be wiped and no personal info will be visible.
To complelty wipe the device, be aware that all data will be deleted.
I recommend you reading this article as it has all the info you need and steps taken before you sell your device, I will type it below swell.
What to do before selling or giving away your Mac - Apple Support
Step six, is where you get up to and as I stated above, just leave it, do not fill anything in.
If you need help on any of the steps the blue writing is a link that will tell you what to do.
I know your Mac is running Yosemite , but the steps for Mavericks will be extremely similar so you can follow them.
Deauthorize your computer from iTunes, if applicable.
Back up your data using Time Machine or other backup methods for OS X Mavericks or Mountain Lion.
If you use Find My Mac or other iCloud features on this Mac, complete these steps:
    Back up your iCloud content.
Choose Apple Menu () > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
Deselect the Find My Mac checkbox.
Sign out of iCloud. When you sign out of iCloud, you're asked whether you want to remove iCloud data from your Mac. Removing iCloud data in this way makes sure that the data isn't also removed from any of your other devices that are using the same iCloud account.
If you're using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later, sign out of iMessage:
In the Messages app, choose Preferences > Accounts.
Select your iMessage account, then click Sign Out.
Reformat your hard drive and reinstall OS X. Follow the appropriate instructions:
    OS X Mavericks
    OS X Mountain Lion
    OS X Lion
After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall OS X, the computer restarts to a Welcome screen and asks you to choose a country or region. If you want to leave the Mac in an out-of-box state, don't continue with the setup of your system. Instead, press Command-Q to shut down the Mac. When the new owner turns on the Mac, the Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.
    Many Thanks
    iBenjamin Crowley
