Yoga 2 13 - Fan speed goes almost silent in tablet mode

I find that the fan generates too much noise on my Yoga 2 13 (not pro), even when the laptop is completely idle.
It seems that somehow the temperature threshold for triggering the fan is set a bit too low (same problem seen on the lenovo yoga first version)
However, I noticed that when I fold my Yoga into tablet mode the fan goes almost silent (which is awesome).
Am I the only one experiencing this issue ?
Is there maybe a way to set the fan speed in laptop, tent and stand mode at the same speed as in tablet mode ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Mat.

I was going to reccomend you use the Notebook fan control program, and I went to go find you a link for it.  However, when searching for it, I discovered that the Notebook fan control program doesn't work for the yoga 2 13 although it does work for my yoga 13.  It seems to be because the yoga 2 13 only has one fan while the yoga 13 has two fans.  I'm not sure.
The best bet for you is to search around on forums to see if anyone has discovered a different program that works.  I tried searching around but I couldn't find anything.

  • Yoga 2 Pro - Black screen when on tablet mode

    Hi,
2 weeks Yoya 2 pro out of the box, and get a black screen when reaching the tablet mode (back of the lid touching the back of the laptop base).
I try hanged the setting under power management, with no success. When reaching the tablet mode, I get the same result as closing the lid in laptop mode.
I connect my Yoga 2 to a TV through the HDMI and can see the screen and interact with the black screen (not easy to touch the right spot).
My bios is updated and I have Windows 8.1.
    Any suggestion???

I found the answer to my problem at
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Yoga-2-Bios-Update-Crash/m-p/1322487/high...
Now that I found that post I do recall the instructions telling me to turn it off manually when I updated the bios earlier this year. However, the current instructions do not mention it at all, perhaps they should be updated?

  • Yoga 2 Pro No Virtual Keyboard in Tablet Mode?

I can't find a way to get a virtual keyboard to come up when Yoga 2 Pro is in tablet mode...even when I click on a search box in my browser or any other text box nothing comes up. Is there a way to make a touch keyboard come up so you can still type?
    Many thanks!

Hi. Here it is. I tried to record the off/on process of this problem. On the seond part i typing in notepad and you can see interuption of letters.

  • Yoga 2 11. Virtual keyboard in Tablet mode

    Hi.
Yoga 2 11 and Windows 8.1 is entirley new to me, so please excuse my lack of knowledge.
When PC is asleep in tablet mode, I cannot get the virtual keyboard in order to log in. When I try to type, it pops up for a second or so (varies in time), but then shrinks back down.
Has anyone see this and is there any way I can sort it out without refreshing Windows? The amount of work to do in reloading programmes and apps is just too painful. If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.
    Thanks
    Rob

    Hi Alaa
    Many thanks.
No actually - I haven't set a restore point, or even thought of doing that. It was Lenovo support that suggested a Windows refresh but when I saw that I would have to re-load apps etc., I backed out. I've done too much for that.
Are you suggesting that if I set a restore point, then I would keep everything already installed?
I now notice that under some circumstances the virtual keyboard pops up. For example it came up when I experimented by trying to answer this in tablet mode. It didn't do it the first time but when I was folding back, it suddenly and randomly came up. Also I was able to search on Maps with a virtual keyboard. But no way will it let me log on.To begin with, (first time I try in a session), it seems to wait until it detects my hand over it,  and then disappears into its shell!
    Thanks

  • Yoga 13" - Touch Pad not disabled in tablet mode/F6 No longer works.

I have updated all of my drivers from the Lenovo Yoga 13" site.  I read on here to pay special attention to the Synaptics driver, mine is 16.2.21.4 from Synaptics.  When I flip in to tablet mode my mouse moves around when I touch it.  Also the F6's "disable touchpad" doesnt work.
Its really annoying to not be able to use it as intended.  Anyone have a fix for this?

    hi OmegaNine,
    Sorry to hear what happened,
    1. Can we Try this,
Go to Control Panel / Programs and features/ uninstall a program
Look for the Synaptics Software, Uninstall it there.
    2. Go to Device Manager and look under "mice and game controllers" and make sure it does not say Synaptics there.
If it Does Uninstall it as well and put a check on the box if it asked "delete driver software"
If the system did not asked you for a restart, Restart the system Manually.
Open Device Manager again and open the category Sensor
      like on this photo
         http://www.codeproject.com/KB/system/wiisensor/wiisensor11.png
Uninstall everything under Sensors but DO NOT put a check on the delete driver Software.
    Restart
    Download and install this driver
Synaptics TouchPad Driver for 64-bit Windows
Restart after installation and Check if You still have the Issue.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers!!

  • Thinkpad Yoga Fan speed

    Hi,
Is it normal that during web browsing (no music, no movies, no additional process running in background) fans are spining fast makes a lot of noise ? The cores (i7 4500U) temperatures are between 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. Laptop is standing on a surface allowing easy air flow.
    Cheers,
    Marek

I have made a claim for the temperature issue twice already. I was told that mainboard with cooling system was replaced. I do not know if that was true but the problem still exist.
Please take a look at the prtscreen. Only web browsing, no stressfull aplication. The CPU temperature are very high and the fan is spinning in the highest mode. That is happening almost all the time.
It can't be normal. Doea any one know what to do ?

  • Mac Mini fan speed shoots up with GPU use

    Hello.
I have a 1.83 C2D mini that's recently been giving me problems. I opened it up to install a new airport card (having separate issues with that!) and at some point my fan started acting up. The mini was always dead quiet. Now, anytime I do something GPU intensive the fan shoots up to 4500-5500 RPM (tested with smcfancontrol).
    Here are some examples...
Browsing the internet in safari is normal, 1500-2000 fan speed.
Streaming a movie over my local network from a server through quicktime, ~3100 RPM
Begin watching a video on youtube or running a program like plex or xbmc, the fan goes nuts between 4k-5500 rpm.
If I exit and go back to internet browsing it will slowly come down.
Before anyone asks, I'm on a fresh install of snow leopard right now with same issues, I tried the SMC reset a few times, and I definitely connected the fan wire when I put the mini back together.
Can anyone help me out with suggestions as to what I did or how to fix this? This mini is basically unusable now for my htpc!
    Thanks!

Hi, I have a similar problem. My Mini is from 2005. I will be working online and all of a sudden the fan speed goes waaay up (I make sure to keep the air intake slots cleaned weekly), my connection ends, the screen goes dark (black) and after bringing the screen back into view a few times (clicking the mouse), the computer will shut down. OR maybe it is the Mac running at hyper speed and not the fan.
As I am basically computer illiterate, I have no idea what causes it. I have slower than molasses dial-up and can't even get my AOL to work right anymore.
I had that "Finder" blinking problem after upgrading to this last OSX version, finally got that fixed.
After that fix about a year ago) , my computer ran better. I noticed (for the first time since I got this Mini) that I had an "alias" HD in my home/users folder. Not sure how it got there OR how I recently lost it, but seems I can't figure out how to get it back. Not sure if that is the problem.
Sorry if you don't understand my post, but it's part of my computer stupidity coming out. lol Sure this sure be "parted-out" into several categories
    ok... help please?
    Thanks in advance..... Murphy

  • R845-S80 lockup with max fan speed

I have Satellite R845-S80, and it locks up from time to time.  It happens very randomly and not very often, but suddenly fan speed goes up and everything locks up.  It happens when it's idle and sometimes while I was typing on MS word. Fan speed going up and lock up is not related with temperature of laptop either. I keep upgrading Bios whenever new one comes out to test if it solves problem, but it still does same thing. Technical support suggests sending the unit for repair, but I don't think they can duplicate the situation unless someone use the laptop for a week or two.
    Does anybody have solution? Thanks

I would have you update the Bios to the latest version, 3.60. I saw nothing specific to the fan or fan speed. But on this computer, they have done 4 Bios upgrades in the last 6 months with a long list of issues being addressed. Again, not seeing anything specific to fans or fan speed, but it's where I'd start.
The fans are controlled by a thermostat on the system board. As the computer gets hotter, the thermostat raises the fan speed. Check you vents for dust, dirt, pet hair, etc. Blowing the dirt back in the computer works, but only for a short while. Best option with a dirty computer is have a tech open up the computer and vacuum out the dirt.

  • T420 fan speed

    Hi there
My T420 with i5 2540M and integrated graphics shows following fan behavior:
    - No load 3300rpm with CPU temp <55 C
    - Max load 3600rpm with CPU temp ~85C (due to CPU throttling, I assume)
Is this a normal behavior observed on other T420 as well? I now reverted to tpfancontrol which stops the fan in idle mode at 52 C and gradually increases it up to 5000rpm for max load.
This works for me, but I would be happy if it worked in BIOS mode as well. Anybody with suggestions or the same problems? Thanks in advance!

Under 15% load, CPU is clocked to ~800MHz and fan is at 3544 RPM as reported by speedfan. Temperature is 42 C. Fan is inaudible.
Running graphics intensive program on iGPU, CPU bounces between 800MHz and 2.5GHz. CPU load is reported as under 20%. CPU temp climbs until it eventually reaches 97C it then seems to throttle, but seems to try to stay around 85. Fan was running at 4,527RPM The processor and dGPU share the heatsink and the dGPU shows a temp of 83C under 0% load at this time. nVidia GPU Activity Icon reports no programs are using dGPU.
Running a single threaded high CPU program, with nothing graphics intensive temperature  will go up to 97C, CPU clocks up to 3.2GHZ and stays around 3.1 to 3.2GHz at all times. Fan speed reported as 4510RPM in BIOS mode. Fan speed goes up to 6487 with speedfan. Turbo Boost Plus allows the fan to go tup 54544RPM.
High GPU program on dGPU (NVS 4200M), CPU reports load of under 30%. Processor speed bounces from 2.5GHz to 800MHz. GPU temperature approaches 99C and processor temperature never exceeds 92C. Fan speed reported as 4527.
High GPU (igpu) plus High CPU, CPU load of up to 75%. CPU speeds around 2.5GHz with minimal throttling as low as 1.6GHz. GPU temperature approaches 99C. Fan 4510 RPM.
I'm interested in finding out why your CPU temp never gets over 85C.

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

  • K8N Neo4 Setup - Issues Adjusting CPU Fan Speed - Alarm Going Off

    Building this PC for a friend, and I just got it to post.  Everything seems to be running stable, only when I get into the CoreCenter, the CPU Fan alarm is going off and the speed is flashing red.  It is currently running at about 820 RPM, but the CPU temp is sitting at 37'C and the sys temp is 32'C.  Is this too hot, is the fan speed way too low, I'm somewhat new to this.  I set it to Cool'n'Quiet and it still does it, I disable Cool'n'Quiet and try to increase CPU fan speed manually, and it won't increase.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  The rig is setup as follows;
    MSI K8N Neo4
    AMD 64 3000+
    Kingston 512MB DDR400
    80GB Seagate ATA
    nVidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB
    Antec NeoPower 480W

You can adjust the alarm level by clicking the little red arrow(Hardware monitor option) on the right side of Core Center, move the slider for CPU Fan Speed Alarm to the left(set it to 500-600rpm), and click OK.
Now you shouldn't get alarms any more.
The fan speed and temperatures you report are very similar to what I see on my system at idle. The fan shold begin to run faster if the system is under load for some time.
    Jens

  • My laptop fan speed is always going so high...

    Hello there.
My laptop fan speed is always running so loud most of the time when I don't even have many programs running. How can I control the fan speed?

    Yes, you can:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049
However, I'd look at the root cause also. See what processes are running and see if any are hogging the processor

  • Imac high fan speed and goes to sleep 10sec after wake-up

    Hi,
Since today my imac's fan speed is high (optical fan and cpu fan speed at: 4000rpm)
Done a hardware test wich gives me 4SNS/1/40000001:IDSR-0.000 indicating something with logic board. According to istat all my temperatures are below 35°C (95°F). istat has readings for the cpu and optical drive temp (both around 26°C)
On top of that if I put my imac to sleep after wakeup (give or take) 10sec later it would go to sleep again. tried the smc reset procedure. no success
Any other tricks to try or just go for an exchange? (imac was bought on 2feb2010)

I've had this problem since replacing the MLB in my iMac a few weeks ago. Initially brought in for repair when the CPU fan came on at 4k rpm and stayed on even after SMC reset and nvram reset. First replacement MLB was a dud, second corrected the fan problems. Now I'm having the sleep issue, I can't tie it to any particular process. Initially I thought it was graphics related as it would go to sleep during graphics intensive work, but yesterday it was doing it when just copying data to an external drive. The temperatures of the CPU and the GPU diode are within spec. I now use a fan controller to keep the CPU fan at 2100rpm and the HD fan at 2100rpm and I don't have the problem. From what I can tell now is that a sensor is incorrectly reporting temperatures intermittently. It may not be the MLB or the graphics card specifically, but the cable connecting the sensor to the board. I ran AHT after the last time it did this and it failed a sensor, but after running ASD on the machine it passed all the hardware. I'm bringing it back into my shop later this month and if i can remember i'll post here with the resolution, not much I can do at home beyond software diagnostics.

  • Minumum fan speed increase with leopard?

I have searched the forum a bit but can't find anything about this.
After installing Leopard I have noticed that I can always hear my fans spinning. I use smcfancontrol. In Tiger I had the minimum set to 2000rpm when nothing intensive was running. Now with Leopard I can't set the minimum lower than 3000rpm. Does anyone else have this problem?
I prefer not to hear the fans unless they are needed and 2000rpm's was almost silent but 3000rpm's is not.
I have reinstalled smc twice and even when I disable it, istat says the fans are running at 3000rpm's. Is this the new MBP minimum for Leopard?

Ok, before it just looked like there was one post. I bought a brand new macbook on Friday, which of course comes with Leopard. Judging from these posts, it sounds like this may be an OS problem and not hardware.
Activity Monitor sometimes shows runaway processes, as others have mentioned. Right now there is something called syslogd taking 100% and the fan speed is 6208 rpm. When I kill it the fan slows down but then it comes back. The fan will run and be noisy even when I'm not doing anything. Right now it says the temp is 34 degrees. I don't know what the target temperature is, so I don't know if it's an issue of running hot or of running the fan more than it needs to. When I called the Apple Care line yesterday it was going to be a 15 minute wait so I didn't hold, but I think I'll try and do it tomorrow. If I get any good advice I'll pass it on. I'll try to see if the fan ever runs fast when nothing is sucking up CPU or only when I get the runaway processes.

  • Bios not reading fan speed

With my new arctic cooler copper silent 2tc install the bios doesn't read the fan speed until the system under load.
When it's under load the system seems ok but when I and just doing a bit of web surfing I'm getting BSOD's (processor.sys error) and freezing.
is this related to the fan speed not being detected can this cause problems?

sounds like its letting it get to hot at idle
    what are your temps
when it goes wrong it's normally in the 30's and then I reboot and watch it in bios stays high 30's or early 40's
when running prime in heat mode it's never got above 54c which was just peak not a constant.
When I was running prime in heat mode the system seemed quite stable and fan was showing around 1600 - 1800 rpm
