Yoga 2 Pro: boot failure and touchscreen unresponsive

I've had my Yoga 2 for about a week and a half and for the most part I love it. First problem has been occasional (maybe 4-5 times) "Boot Failure", or something along those lines, on startup. Every time after restarting it it has worked fine. Also just earlier today I had a problem where the touchscreen went unresponsive for around 20 minutes before working fine again. I was in class so didn't do anything to try to fix it (taking notes so couldn't restart or anything), and it just starting working again by itself. Other than this, I have had no other problems. I have a few days left on my return/exchange with Best Buy, so wondering if these are problems that I should be seriously concerned about. Thanks.

If it were me, I would definitely exchange it. Boot failure may indicate some permanent failure about to happen, not to mention a flakey touch screen. Neither sounds like a software issue on a brand new computer.

  • Yoga 2 Pro: Freezing, BSODs, and restarting

I got my Yoga 2 Pro in March, and I've loved it. About a month or a month and a half ago(maybe), it started having random glitches.
At first, I'd notice it when using the Netflix app. When waking the computer up from sleep when Netflix was open, it would just bluescreen and come back up and act normal. Then, it happened occasionally during shows I watched.
Then, I started having it happen more often, almost never with the same bluescreen error message. I would be browsing the web with the only program open being Firefox, and suddenly Firefox would close, saying it had something go wrong. Shortly after, I would get a BSOD.  I can't do anything to recreate or predict when something like this will happen next.
I recently updated BIOS, thinking that it could help.  I went about a week with no problems.  Out of nowhere, today, I got a BSOD when I was trying to log in after starting it up. Later, I had it restart suddenly, with no warning or bluescreen whatsoever.  Then, I had the screen freeze completely.  I couldn't use the mouse, keyboard or touchscreen. I tried ctrl+alt+delete and Ctrl+shift+esc. I did a hard restart, and it's been fine since. I have googled, looked at discussion boards, and gone through with the Lenovo Solutions Center thing to try to identify a problem.  It can't find anything, but I know there is a problem or it wouldn't bluescreen.
Please help! I may just need a new unit. :/

  • Yoga 2 Pro tent mode and auto-rotate not working

I have had a Yoga 2 Pro since June. Recently the Tent mode and auto-rotate features do not work.
When I put the Yoga 2 Pro into Tent mode the keyboard and touch pad are still active underneth. However, they shutoff when in tablet mode. Lenovo Transition starts automatically and is running.
Auto-rotate does not work at all now. The screen is un-locked.

  • Yoga 2 Pro - Screen Flickering and Screen Blanking

    Hi,
I love the Yoga 2 Pro. But i have fews issues with it. Especially when used on battery.
My screen flicker from time to time. The onyl fix i found was to close the lid to put the laptop to sleep and the reopen it. Not very convinient.
An other issue I encounter is the screen blanking after a while when the computer is not in use. It's like the computer blank the screen to save battery power, but when you want to reuse it again, it won't start again. THe only fix is to hard reset the computer (eg : press 10s the power button)
I am running a fresh clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro with all the Lenovo Drivers up to date (exept the BIOS one)
If you could help me fix my issues. I think it's software related.
Do you think i should put the BIOS update ? Does anybody ever try with a clean windows 8.1 install ?
    Thanks a lot,
    Romain

I have the same issue, only it occurs at low brightness.
It flickers rapidly for a few seconds and goes away. It occasionally comes back, making it unable to work in darker environments with the rapid flickers.
I've checked all the auto-brightness and intel power saving options. I tried using both refresh rates, and they don't make a difference. The problem occurs in all power plans and even in the non-Lenovo energy manger modes. All drivers and BIOS are up to date.
I'm at a complete loss as to why this is happening...I would greatly appreciate a solution. I sincerely hope I don't have a defective laptop..):

  • Yoga 2 Pro Cracked Screen and more....

I ordered a Yoga 2 Pro direct from LENOVO very late December - delivered around January 1st.
I didn't have the time to unpack and examine for about a week.
I unpacked and first turn on the computer around January 7...and over the next few days spent just a brief amount of time setting it up, updating, etc.
My time playing with the computer was brief...just 30-45 minutes every other day or so..nothing more than a general look and feel.
I was impressed with the look and feel...the build quality and performance.
Over the weekend things changed for the worse....I was working with the unit in my living room in the morning....closed the lid...placed in on the coffee table.
Later in the afternoon - some 4-5 hours later....I sat down, picked up the Yoga 2 Pro, and in short order noticed a crack extending from top left - just at the end of the LENOVO name - down to the middle of the bottom.
The Yoga 2 was treated with white glove delicacy the entire time since it left it's box.
I currently have numerous laptops (including 2 LENOVO) and tablets...from APPLE, ACER, LENOVO, AMAZON, etc.
I have never experienced anything like it.
The ONLY ideas I can come up with fall into two categories:
1 - the design is inherently flawed.
There is noticeable flex in the unit - both the keyboard and screen - yes - it is minimal (I never twisted or stressed it in anyway beyond gentle normal operation.  Perhaps the glass can't handle it?  Maybe theglasssize / installissuchthatitcan'thandlethenormalstress?
2 - The unit has issues with thermal expansion.
During the 4-5 hours when the laptop was on my coffee table - the sun had come through the window and warmed my coffee table and everything on it.  The Yoga 2 was noticeably very warm when I sat down to work on it.  I thought I heard a very faint 'crack' or 'snap' sound as I was opening the screen..Though I can't be sure.
Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?
I called LENOVO this morning and have shipped the unit back for a full refund.
The other 'issue' was the native resolution - running programs and apps.
The screen is very hi resolution and looks good.  (though it was on the dark side .... even with max brightness darker areas of photos / videos loose distinction...everything goes to black...maybe I could have adjusted otherwise but never got the chance...)
Chrome browser running as a WIN 8 app is useless....the font is so tiny you need jewlers loops to see anything - and trying to use a fingertip for navigation is impossible.
The same for other funtions...yes, the very high resolution is great  -but usability is very limited and will require running in a lower - non native resolution if youy want to run applications / software.
    Thanks

Hi, I too have had the same problem. I had received my Lenovo Yoga 2 "Pro" today and when I first put it on my lap and opened it, I heard a crack. Oh what a traumatising sound it was. I investigated further and found that I had the same crack as yours. From the Lenovo sign all the way to the middle...
I'm pretty sure the Yoga 2 "Pro" isn't so much of a Pro after all. The build quality is something out of a $500 laptop. The ridiculously thin glass and the bendy plastic isn't ideal at all, the Lenovo team clearly did not know how to design a laptop. I mean afterall, this is Lenovo "the king of laptops".
The reason why I am so offensive is because I had an unforgettable experience with my Surface 2 a couple of months ago. On the same day I received it the device crashed. I took it to a separate serviceman because Microsoft couldn't be bothered to have proper worldwide support. The Nvidia Tegra processor was faulty. You know, it always baffles me why Apple is considered the best. It's because it is, come to think of it. I have NEVER heard of a hardware issue out of ANY Apple device. The build quality on Apple devices is so professionally made, so professionally examined that it is completely out of Lenovo's league. No company can compete with Apple on build quality.
    Apple are professional unlike Lenovo.

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Keyboard and Touchpad Unresponsive While Charging

    Hi all,
I am having some trouble with my early 2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro.
Sometimes when attempting to charge my laptop, if I have been out and about, I can only have the charger plugged in for 30 seconds maximum upon booting up the machine, before the touchpad and keyboard become unresponsive.
The fans normally whirl loudly and then I lose both the touchpad and keyboard, to the extent that my MacBook attempts to search for a bluetooth keyboard as it can not detect one connected.
This has only happened twice but its becoming a major annoyance and a big concern on such a high value item.
Has anyone had any experience of this type of behaviour?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Macbook Pro Boot time and general response time slow.

    I'm running 10.9 Mavericks.
Yesterday as I was doing my every day activites I realized randomly my macbook pro began preforming extremely poorly.
    My problems:
Boot time now takes 2-3 minutes.
Applications take 2-3 minutes to open.
Applications will say they're open sometimes but will not display.
Applications will take several tries to quit.
Applications, especially Safari, will randomly crash.
Everything is slower and takes a while to do, even opening a simple folder will take a minute.
    The things I have tried:
I ran a Hardware test and the results showed it is not a hardware problem.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM and the problems still occur.
I have Verified and repaired the Disk/Permissions, however it seems to stop mid-way through (after about an hour).
I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with it. I can re-install the OS but with my internet it is estimated to take 8 hours.
    Any suggestions?

Your disk may be failing.  Do not attempt to resintall the OS until your disk is healthy.
    Backup your data immediately:
Before proceeding you should make sure you have a current backup.  If it has been getting slower over time your disk could be a failing slowly.  SATA drives have two retry modes: short and long.  They can continue operating as read errors are increasing.  The long retry cycle is very long and can cause significant performance degradation.  If it has started long retries then it is likely to get worse and eventually fail.  SSDs also have a failure mode where the fail slowly.

  • Mac Pro boot failure

Hello everybody. I recently bought a new Mac Pro (2x Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2,4GHz, running OS X 10.6.8) and just encountered a very strange error at bootup. 1 out of 10 system boots take up much longer and end up in having the desktop with a light blue layer on the screen, being able to move the mouse cursor but not click on any item. I'm using the magic mouse + trackpad + wireless keyboard but have also tried to use a cable mouse with no success. The only way to shutdown the system is to force a power down. Then the computer will boot up fine again several times. Then again, the same error occurs. This is what the kernel log says. Have a look at the bold line: this is where the system hangs much longer at startup (I'm using verbose mode at startup).
Thank you in advance for your help!

Okay, I just came a step further with troubleshooting but still hope someone may help me out of this.
Everytime I shutdown the system before the error occurs again on bootup, the shutdown messages contain something like "AppleBluetooth ..." after unmounting all disks - unfortunately I cannot find this message in the logfiles but it's there on shutdown (using verbose mode) just before the system halts. Then, the next boot will lead to the mentioned problems. If I shutdown the system and the message does not appear, everything's going to be fine on bootup.
There must be something wrong with the wireless keyboard + magic trackpad:

  • MacBook Pro boot failure after firmware update

    Hello,
I've had my MacBook Pro with a solid state harddrive about a month.  Tonight I did an update (including a firmware update) and it has failed to boot.  The fans run at full speed, but nothing boots.  The screen remains blank.  What can I do?

iTunes sound works - but no internet sound!!

  • NB100 - Boot failure and how to do a system rollback?

I have tried to do an update on my Toshiba NB100 11R (less than a month old) and it failed, and now I can't boot it.
I sadly know nothing about Linux based systems. Have tried to boot from the CD (supplied) with an external USB disk drive and can't find anywhere to do a rollback/early boot record to restore from, and I am now stuck with a dead machine.
Any suggestions gratefully received! Thanks, Bill

When you switch on, press F12 a few times to enter the boot menu - from there you should be able to choose to boot from the recovery CD (not sure in your case if it would count as a CD or USB device - trial and error I guess!).

  • Yoga 2 Pro: Sound, Browser and Wifi Fixes

These are the fixes I have came across the last couple months. Hope these are helpful.
Sound, when plugging in headphones or HDMI connecton the sound will go out sometimes.
FIX: Press  Mute, then mute again(turning the sound back on). Works fine after.
Browser, I don't have this one licked yet but this is my work around. I would love input if anyone has a better alterative. In Chrome touchpad scrolling is impossible for me to use. It will scroll 10% down the page and stop then start zooming the page in and out. But the touchscreen does work fine. I prefer the touchpad in most cases, so this is what i have done. I do miss the extentions in Chrome.
FIX: Use Firefox. Not a perfect fix but I am happy. The loading times when going back to pages is alot faster and touchpad scrolling def works.
Wfif, works fine most the time. As of the last 2 weeks, twice the wifi went to a "limit connection".
FIX: Windows "Troubleshooot Problems" on the Wifi icon. It like restarts the wireless connection and works fine.

    1. This is a Windows 8/realtek feature. If I am listening to iTunes first and then play a youtube video, it will assume that since iTunes has been playing longer, it must be more important. As a result, it plays the youtube video at a lower. Even if you pause iTunes, Windows will be hooked to the iTunes player for a few min before it realizes the change in audio states and increases the youtube video.
Try: Control Panel > Sound > "Communications" tab > "Do nothing".
    2. Sounds like a Windows problem too.
    3. Have you tried disabling adaptive brightness (it must be disabled in 3 different locations, to properly be disabled).
    4. Try disabling/uninstalling DPTF

  • My MacBook Pro boots up and goes straight to blue screen

After the grey and the apple comes up, it goes straight blue screen.  The only way it will work is if I go into safe mode.  Can someone help me with this issue please?

    Try a SMC reset.

So I am a big fan of the lenovo yoga tablet so I started looking into the new versions of the tablet and I came upon something curious. both the yoga tablet 2 pro and the yoga tablet 2 13 (windows)  have the same processor (a 64-bit processor) as well as very similar technical specs(the main difference being the windows edition has 4GB of ram instead of 2GB and a larger battery no doubt due to the removal of the integrted pico projector). as well Lenovo has the source code for the android build in the pro available on the website.
So my question is if both are running off the same 64-bit processor is there anything stopping someone from compiling the yoga 2 pro source code and installing the yoga 2 pro android OS onto the Windows version of the tablet (dual-booting both) aside from secure boot needing to be disabled?
after scouring the internet and asking a few lenovo representatives I have found absolutely no information on this (the lenovo reps I spoke to couldn't even confirm the specs of the processors but I found that data from the intel ark database) and it is something I really would like to do if possible (especially with android 5.0 having x86 support integrated in the vanila build)
So anyone have any information on anyone trying this or something similar being attempted?

so, lenovo putted a really bad bios on thoses tablets.

To make it short, the uefi bios used on yoga tablets support only x86 so, the x86-64 instruction set can't be used, on windows. Without CSM (compatibility support module) you can't even try to boot some oses. For linux you need to mod it, i'll try later but, i can't build a new bios and lenovo is not present on this board

  • Yoga 3 Pro Slow - How to reinstall Windows 8.1 without all bloatware

My new Yoga 3 Pro is slow and sticking even with using Office 365 and even when browsing it is allready sticking.
I have heard that doing a clean install of just vanilla Win 8.1 pro is a good way to go.
I am not super technical, what is the best way to approach that with the Yoga 3 Pro? Any cautions or recommendations against this approach?

    Hi,
If you go with a clean install I'd suggest first making your recovery flash drive.  That way you can revert to the factory setup if you later change your mind.
I tested a clean install on my Y3P a couple of days ago.  Things I noticed: the initial install screens are tiny due to the Y's high resolution.  The touchpad and touchscreen don't work during install, so you'll need to plug in a mouse or fuss with keyboard-only navigation.  After installation you'll only have 2.4GHz wifi, so you'll need to install the Lenovo driver.  There are probably other Lenovo drivers that will be required - but I haven't taken the experiment any farther yet.
It's convenient that these days you can download the clean install image directly from Microsoft.
