Yoga 2 Pro keyboard light

Hi,
I have a Yoga 2 Pro for just a few days.
I noticed that the keyboard light is not workiing properly.
Sometimes it lights up, sometimes it does not.
Sometimes I can turn it on and off (fn + left space), sometimes I cannot.
Once it came on by itself, but when I pressed a key - a letter key - it turned off and I could not light it up again.
I noticed that when it does not work, if I change mode (from laptop to tent or tablet and back to laptop) most of the times I am able to take it on.
I am guessing this is a hardware problem.
Am I right?
Is there anything I can do to make sure it is a h/w failure before getting it to a service center?
Thanks
Costa

Simultaneously?
I'll give it a try...thx

how can I turn on the keyboard light on a mac book pro and keep it on all the time? the unlit keyboard is barely visible to me, thanks

Hi ddley: I agree the keyboard lettering is very difficult to see in certain light conditions. I came across this little program http://labtick.proculo.de/ to help out. It makes a world of difference for those of us that still have to look at the keyboard.

  • My MacBook Pro keyboard light is out. How do I correct it?

The light on my keyboard is out. Does anyone know how to fix it ?

I just got my Macbook Pro back from Apple replacing the motherboard. A few days later, trying to use it in a darkened room, I noticed that the keyboard backlight wasn't going. So I tried all the techniques given here, even resetting the SMC a few times, no luck.
I opened up the case, using the iFixit screenshots (from http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2010-Logic-Board-Rep lacement/3097/2 ) to tell me where the keyboard backlight cable would be connected, and what do you know? The repairers haven't even left that cable in the machine, let alone just forgotten to plug it in or something.
So, bottom line: IF your computer is recently back from repair, it MAY be that they haven't connected the keyboard backlight cable.
My computer now has to go back to Apple to fix, again. (I'm not blaming anyone: these things are pretty darned fiddly to fix, and anyone could leave out one tiny little ribbon cable... I just wish that it hadn't happened.)

  • Keyboard lights will not stay off no matter what I do on my MacBook Pro. Why??

I've got a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo.
I have ALWAYS left the keyboard lights off for the 4 years I have had it.
But lately, no matter what settings I change or what I try, I cannot PREVENT the keyboard lights from coming on when I've been away from the computer for a long period of time.
Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light is NOT checked in System Prefs. I have reset the PRAM, and left the laptop off with the battery off for hours in hopes of resetting it.
Nothing will work. Almost every time I am away from my computer for hours, I come back and the keyboard lights are on. And when I tap the keyboard light brightness buttons, it just gives me the buster symbol (white circle with a line through it) on screen below the keyboard light brightness indicator for a few seconds. Somehow continuing to tap those buttons eventually makes the lights just turn off. Or holding my hands over the whole keyboard to trigger the sensor can suddenly allow me to control the on/off brightness with those buttons again. In which case I try turning the lights off completely or turning the brightness so low that it goes off.
But once again, when I wake up in the morning, I find the keyboard lights on.
Now the ONLY thing that has changed since this started happening is that I added a new User account. BUT that should asbolutely not cause this problem. I have checked to see if the System Preferences for the keyboard lights in the new user account were causing a conflict, but no, they are exactly the same as my main account.
I have not tried deleting the user account yet because I actually want it and would find it very hard to believe that was the culprit. It's just the only thing I can think of that changed shortly before this started happening.
Is there anything else I can do!?! Is there some preference file that controls the lights somewhere that could be corrupt that I need to trash?
Thank you for any help anyone can provide. This one has stumped me good.

From reading up of other forums with the same problem i have come up with two reasons why it is doing that.
first try doing a smc reset
if that does not work then it is a hardware error. Many people have had the problem and they have not been able to fix it so good luck

  • My Macbook Pro 15" Retina Display Keyboard Lights never turn on? why and what can I do to fix it?

Ive had the Macbook pro Retina for about a year and a half and the keyboard light never comes on.
    How can I fix it?

Have you tried a SMC reset?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Have you checked your settings in System Preferences>Keyboard?
You probably should have addressed this issue when you originally noticed it.  If you have Apple care, then you still can have this rectified under the warranty provisions.
    Ciao.

how do i get the keyboard on my macbook pro to light up?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What MacBook Pro have you got? Only Unibody MacBooks Pro (Late 2008 and newer) have a backlit keyboard. If you have one of these MacBooks Pro, you can set up its illumination in System Preferences > Keyboard. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4882

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you may have to take the MBP to the Apple Store  to have it checked.

  • Macbook Pro screen and keyboard lights problems

Hi there, I have a macbook pro 15'' late 2011. Lately I realised that the screen does not dim when in a dark room and the keyboard lights do not work either. The keyboard keys work for dimming and lighting the screen, but it does not happen automatically. As for the keyboard lights, pressing the F5 and F6 buttons brings up the image of keyboard lights and they seem to be increasing and decreasing, but in fact nothing happens and the keyboard remains without any lights.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks without lighted keyboards that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Macbook pro screen and keyboard light turns off

    Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my macbook pro, if im sitting at a table and i glide my laptop slightly my screen and keyboard light goes off and i cant see anything.
I have to turn it left or right to try and get it back on.....same thing if i close my computer and reopen it again it wont wake up from sleep mode.
anyone else having a similer issue? is this software related?

That seems like a loose or failing cable.
You could try a SMC reset:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964  to elimate the controller.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
    check warranty https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
You could try running the Apple HArdware Test, not always definitive however.  If it shows an error code report back.

Actually, if the setting is correct in Sys Prefs, and it's dark enough, and the lights still don't work, try an SMC Reset (not a PRAM Reset): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.

  • Yoga 2 Pro: keyboard locking while using a browser

I have been having a very frustrating problem with my Yoga Pro 2 13. It started with keyboard and mousepad input blocking while using a browser (any browser, I tried them all), while the touch screen still worked. I would have to restart the computer to get them back to work, however, the computer would get stuck restarting (as in restart screen with the circle would circle endlessly). When I started getting BSOD, followed with the failure to boot, I sent the computer for repair. The hard disk, motherboard and keyboard were replaced, windows 8 reinstalled.,, post has to be continued belowAfter 24 hours of use, the problem reocurred (keyboard started blocking, BSOD appeared, it did not boot) and the computer was sent, yet again. This time only hard drive was replaced. I received it yesterday, updated to windows 10, and, as I feared, the same problem persists. The keyboard has blocked several times, I was not able to restart unless I was doing the power button shut off. Touch screen input is never affected during these episodes. I am extremely frustrated with the problem, and with the failure of Lenovo to fix it (even though they believe it was fixed). I can't keep sending it to the depot every 7 days, and not being able to use it in between. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to approach this problem? Thank you

  • Macbook Pro won't recognize iSight nor turn on keyboard lights

    Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8. I hadn't been able to turn the keyboard lights on with the F6 button for a few weeks now, and they hadn't been turning on automatically. Today, the computer stopped recognizing the built-in camera -- it's definitely a computer issue, as it is happening with numerous programs.
I have tried putting it to sleep and waking it up, restarting it, shutting it down and then turning it on, a PRAM reset, and an SMC reset, although I'm not sure whether the SMC reset went through because it didn't make any noise or anything when I tried it, although the power cord light did change colour. Any idea on how to fix what is happening?
    Best,

You have already tried all the usual troubleshooting suggestions.  The only thing that you did not mention was checking your Keyboard lighting settings through System Preferences.
Sounds like a trip to the AS or an AASP.

  • I just bought a Macbook pro and the keyboard lights flash on and off.  What's wrong? do I need to take it back?

    ahhhh help!

you can switch off the automatic lighting of the keyboard by going to system preferences then keyboard and uncheck 'automatically illuminate keyboard in low light' . after this you can control your keyboard light by using the buttons F5 and F6 at the top of your keyboard

Try ooting into your Mavericks Recovery partition - by holding down the command and R keys shilst booting.
Once at the Recovery screen, open Disk Utility, slect your hard drive icon on the left of the screen (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you'e renamed it) and click on the "Verify" button. If you get green text telling you that everything seems to be O.K., just reboot. If you get red text telling you that the drive needs to be repaired, click on the "Repair" button. If repair is successful, you should be able to bott normally.
    Call back with results.
