Yoga 3 Pro - Accessing BIOS, boot menu and System Recovery

The following tutorial will explain the following topics
How to access the BIOS Setup
Choosing a boot menu
Start a system recovery
It is not the idea to explain every single option of the above, since many of them are complex and it would be too extensive for such a tutorial like this.
To execute any of the tasks above you need to press the button marked with the red arrow in the picture below:
Press the button when the Y3P is off! Use a small pointing device, I use the tablet pen of one of my Thinkpad tablets
Once you press the button you will be presented with the following screen:
Use the cursor keys to move up and down, press Enter to choose an option.
1) BIOS Setup
The BIOS is where you can get technical information about your device, as well to change boot parameters and setting up security passwords. Be very careful when changing certain values, since it can affect the way the Y3P works and/or affect performance and security settings.
Information Screen
It gives the hardware details of the Y3P, like CPU, installed RAM, SSD capacity and so on. This is a display only screen, no settings can be changed here:
Configuration Screen
Time and date can be changed in this screen. Furthermore to deactivate the Wireless LAN and enable the Intel Virtual Technology. If you plan to use Virtual Machine software in your Y3P this setting must be enabled
Passwords can be set up in this section. Secure Boot settings can be changed here.
Primarily designed to protect users from rootkits and other malware attacks by blocking unauthorized executables and drivers from being loaded during the boot process, it must be deactivated if you plan to install Linux or having paralel operating systems
Boot Screen
Boot modes can be selected in this screen, you can disable booting from a USB stick or from a network for example
2) Boot Menu
This option is useful if you have Linux installed (using managers like LILO, GRUB, etc).
If you only use Win8 or higher there 's no much you can change.
3) System Recovery
This option will allow you to restore the system to either its factory setup, or to a previous backup done within Windows
A factory set up will leave the Y3P as it was shipped from Lenovo your private data and installed apps and/or programs will be wiped out. So make sure you have an external backup before such a reset

OK article. Doesn't answer my questions.

• Laptop won't load OS, won't enter BIOS/Boot Menu.

I recently installed Windows 7 Professional on my Compaq CQ56 PC, on a 260Gig HHD partition. I then installed Opensuse linux on the remainind 60Gig. However half way through installation my PC ran out of power and dhut down. I tried booting and changing the Boot Device menu, so that I complete installation, but it won't allow me to go into the boot menu (simply stops on the compaq start screen - fan and cd-rom will be working.) Is there a way for me to rectify this without losing my data?

It sounds as if you were never warned to always do an OS installation or anything that has to do with partitioning while on external power.
Please identify your notebook with more than just the model type. You have given an incomplete picture of your hardware configuration while reporting an extreme hardware/firmware issue. IT would help to remove the battery and take a look at the service tag. Please post the p/n (product number) here in your thread
There are a few things to try.
Remove the hard disk. Connect the power adapter and press the power button. Does the BIOS screen appear and warn that it can not find a bootable disk?
If it does not, then try a hard reset.
Try a hard reset as follows:
1) Remove the battery and unplug the DC power adapter.
2) Press and hold the power button for more than fifteen seconds.
3) Plug in the DC power adapter (leave the battery out for now)
4) Press the power button
Please post your positive or negative results here in your thread.
You can put the hard disk in an external housing and connect it to another PC to try torecover your data. What you will see will depend on the operating system of the PC that you use for data recovery.

• Mac Pro will not boot - HD and Machine are fine.

Greetings, and thank you in advance for your wisdom.
I have a 12-core Mac Pro, and she has been running like a dream. Once a month I run Onyx. Yesterday I did the same and upon reboot I got the grey apple screen and the spinning progress wheel that never stops spinning.
1. I repaired the HD via Disk Utility. All is fine.
2. The contents of the start-up drive are accessible - so the drive itself is not physically damaged.
3. I installed a new HD and made a copy of this Start-up disk via the Disk Utility. It will not boot from this drive as well.
4. I installed Snow Leopard (still using this) on the new drive to make sure the computer was happy. It fires up fine.
5. Everything is disconnected from the Mac Pro
So, I have obvious, and idiotically damaged the start-up disk using Onyx (assumption).
My life would be much better knowing I could do something that would enable me to boot from my current start-up and that's where I seek your wisdom.
Another question would be: If the above is not possible, if I install a fresh OS on the new drive, and then begin to replace all of the folders from the old drive (applications, library, etc.) will I be able to access my files as I did before. My issue is that I use this for music production, and there are literally close to 100 plugins that all have been registered. Going back through that process again would be days of labor, as some of these were purchases years ago. Tracking down serials would be a task. I think you understand.
So any advice that might prevent me from having to do as I said above will be wonderful.
Thank you all so much.
Lance

Under some circumstances, you may need to reinstall Mac OS X. You can reinstall Mac OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.
from:
Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
If your Hardware is functioning correctly, and your disk has no un-repaired Directory problems [Hint: run Disk Utility ( Repair Disk ) first] then re-installing Mac OS X modifies ONLY the files that are part of Mac OS X. Your Added Applications, User files (which contain preferences and serial numbers) are not supposed to be touched.

• Hard drive and system recovery question - "No boot device"

I replaced a 320Gb - 5400 rpm drive that failed with a 750Gb - 7200 rpm drive. Using the HP System Recovery disks to reload the OS, once it goes through the restoration process the mb doesn't seem to recognize the hard drive and I get the "No Boot device" message upon rebbot. Unfortunately, the BIOS is not the best and it won't allow me to see if it actually recognizes the new hdd, which I suspect it doesn't - even though the Recovery Manager seems to . Either that or I have a bad MB.
Sytem information - HP G71-340US
Processor - 2.20 GHz Intel Core2 Duo Processor T6600
BIOS - InsydeH20 3.5
So even though Recovery manager *appears* to be installing W7 just fine, but it's a no go when it's time to actually boot to it, what is the problem? Is this a mb issue or did I just buy the wrong hd?

Well, a few reboots later and it seems the issue is no longer the mb or the hd. W7 is having a tough time though, and am now working on the second system restore, this time from the recovery partition, to try and get it to load fully. When I reinstalled from the System Recovery DVD the second time through, I skipped installing the third (driver) disk and that appeared to help. Just wish I could get the OS to comply. Maybe the third time will be a charm?

• Nokia n8 bios & boot menu

Is there a Bios on the Nokia n8 or other similar? If so, how do I go to these settings? and how to get to boot menu? Symbian does not suit me, I want to completely reformat my phone

Given that you are asking I'm assuming you havent a clue, so the short answer is no
The longer answer is, given the right tools, knowledge and experiance it might be possible to flash iOs Win7 or Android to the N8, tho you'd have to significantly modify the software to handle the N8 hardware, especially the camera module,
however the resultant phone would be hideously slow and stuttery as Symbian is much more resource freindly than the other mobile OS's the N8 has significantly less processing power than the equivalent competition
Also even attempting to do so would void your warenty
The only way of fully resetting the device is the *#7370# reset which should put it into an out of box state (tho pre anna this can be a bit flakey)

• Why is my mac book pro slower to boot up and browse since upgrading to OS Yosemite

Help a new Apple user,
I purchased a new mac pro from Best Buy and learn how to use it pretty quickly and actually started to believe it was a great decision to switch from windows. Then the mac pro gave the upgrade to the OS Yosemite, I upgraded it, and its slow booting up and browsing like windows. What happened to the quick reboot and speed when first started to use the Mac. I have had this Mac Pro for about a month now but not happy at this point. Please help fix this problem, it past my return date now if it continues to be slow like my previous window laptop.

• Windows and system recovery won't launch

I have HP Pavilion dv7-2015TX. It is running Windows Vista when it used to work. It stopped loading windows and initially offered me the recovery mode or starting windows normally. When I chose the recovery mode it kept asking me to find the operating software to repair which it couldn't find. Now I'm not even being offered that option. Hitting esc on startup brings me to the startup menu. I've run System Diagnostics and done a start-up test where it came up with no errors, stating startup test passed. The Error log comes up with 0305 @ Time 07132013-185631; 0601 @ time 06082013-080914; 0601 @ time 06062013-183504; and 0305 @ time 11152012-033540.
Choosing the system recovery option just makes it start to try and load windows and I end up back with a blue screen and an arrow.
If I just let the system continue its boot without hitting the esc key and going to the startup menu, then it starts to load windows but eventually also ends up on the blue screen with the white arrow.
I have made a set of recovery discs but can't get the system to load from them either. Repeatedly hitting F11 on startup doesn't stop the system from trying to load windows and then the blue screen. Hitting F9 just gets me to a black screen with a line of incomprehensible characters.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I really suspect that your hard drive is bad and will have to be replaced. Not sure though if this would also be causing the problem of booting from Recovery Disks. Can you boot from any other disk?
Get a utility cd such as PW. It will allow you to test hard drive, format it if possible.Scroll down on the page and get> Bootable CD ISO and> ImgBurn to burn the iso image to cd-a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here. Once created, boot from it. Delete any hdd partitions, create one and format.

• Problems with restoring my iTunes library after performing an HP backup and system recovery

Hello,
Last Sunday night/Monday morning, I had to perform a system recovery (from the discs supplied by HP) on my HP Compaq Presario SR5310F 32-bit desktop computer running Windows Vista Home Premium, (on the recommendation of samone at HP) and just backing up my 90+ GB iTunes library took 12 hours (the actual system recovery took only about 2-1/2 hours, the following morning). After the recovery process was complete, I 'restored' the backed-up files by either double-clicking or just opening the first backup file (the one whose file name ends in '.1') and following the prompts, which placed the files into something called the 'System Restore Files' folder. I thought I could just restore my iTunes library by dragging and dropping the music, video and iTunes folder files from this System Restore Files folder back into their original places on my computer, but while the song titles did show up in my iTunes library, whenever I tried to actually play one, an exclamation point would appear beside the song's title and I'd get the error message 'iTunes cannot find the file'; when I clicked on 'Find missing file'--or whatever it's called--the C < Users < [username] < Music folder would open, and it would be completely blank, with only the words 'This folder is empty' appearing in it. (And BTW, before you try to recommend the 'Finding missing content in iTunes' or 'How to find missing music in iTunes' articles to me, I should point out that I did try all of the steps in those articles, but my iTunes library was still completely empty at that point, despite trying those steps; that was why I finally tried 'dragging and dropping all of those files back into the Desktop, Downloads, Documents--yes, some really large download files, not from iTunes, showed up in the Documents folder--and also a couple of downloaded music files--again, not from iTunes--showd up 'loose' [by 'loose', I mean not in one of the folders (e.g., Documents, Downloads etc.) in my [username] subfolder] in my [username] subfolder, after which, I was able to get most of my song and video titles listed in iTunes again, but they just won't PLAY! Also, it appears I'm missing about 5 GB from my iTunes library now, as it's saying that I only have about 85.15 GB worth of files in it, where before I had 90+ GB worth of files in it.)
BTW, I can play the files I moved to Desktop, Downloads, etc. if I right-click on the individual files in these locations and then click on 'Play' or 'Open With', but they just won't play in iTunes.
And one more thing: I stupidly deleted my 2 iTunes podcast file titles after I discovered that these, too, would not play; is there any way I can recover these--and my iTunes library--without performing yet ANOTHER system recovery and starting over 'from scratch'? (But if that's what I'll have to do, I'll do it--or else I'll just give up and start all over again with the new computer I plan to buy over the Labor Day weekend [it'll be a 64-bit Windows 7 computer, I know that much at least], as most of my music was ripped from CDs or else downloaded from places like Bandcamp or Amazon MP3, and these downloads were saved to a series of USB flash drives; I was informed that if worst came to worst, I could redownload my iTunes purchases, but my 2 podcasts will be lost forever, as iTunes doesn't 'keep' those--or words to that effect...)
P.S. The computer I'm using has only a 250 GB hard drive, of which 223 GB were available, I couldn't perform the 'Consolidate' function so I could properly back up my iTunes library, as, what with the accumulated Windows downloads (I got this computer in February 2008) and other programs, I had only a few (< 10) GB free--not enough to consolidate the iTunes library, and second, the computer malfunctioned just prior to my performing the system recovery, so that I could no longer log on in 'normal' mode, only in the various safe modes. A lady at Microsoft told me I could back up my iTunes library by logging on in safe mode with networking (since I could do that, albeit with the error message 'Your account has been loaded with a temporary profile') and pasting my iTunes library to my external hard drive, but when I tried this, I got a message listing my iTunes library as '(empty)' when I clicked on iTunes in 'All Programs', and needless to say, my iTunes library wouldn't even open in any of the safe modes (I don't know whether it was 'just' my computer, or whether the lady didn't know what she was talking about--she does work for Microsoft, after all).

OK, before you moved the iTunes folder did the library contain entries for your original files?
This is the normal layout of the iTunes folders. From what you said at the outset it would seem that, as far as that copy of your library is concerned, it thinks the media folder is C:\System Recovery Files\C\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
Not quite sure where you have moved the original set of library files to (that is the five files listed above and the Album Artwork folder) but you should move these to C:\System Recovery Files\C\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes, (leaving everything else in place) then click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately press and hold down the left shift key until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the library file at C:\System Recovery Files\C\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl - fingers crossed this will open your old database, which will be able to find your old files. If that goes well we can look to moving them somewhere more sensible.

• Podcast Subscriptions and System Recovery

I am planning on doing a System Recovery tomorrow (Sept 13) and I'm wondering about my Podcasts. The podcasts themselves, I've taken and copied into my backup folder, which I'll burn before I do the system recovery, so I know those will be fine. What about the actual subscriptions themselves? Will I have to go in and resubscribe to all of them after I reinstall iTunes, or is there someway to back those up as well?

Hi EP Meyer
EP Meyer wrote:
Automatically Download Missing Artwork only works for tracks that are available +for purchase+ in the iTunes Music Store.
I appreciate you clarifying that for me. Distinction noted.
Podcasts either come with artwork, or they don’t. That is up to the person who publishes the podcast.
Right. This I know.
And as far as I know, there is no way to automatically apply artwork to a subscription, previous to actually having the file available.
This is a little less clear to me. I have artwork on all my podcast episodes, even for the new episodes that were automatically added later. I've never had to manually do anything to get the artwork for my podcasts. Am I not understanding what your saying?

It's the recovery disc that we've made. If you go on the support and drivers area of website it explains this and says to order new recovery discs. I am having the same issue and so have ordered the discs and hope they work!
Mine is doing the exact same thing so it's almost like it's caught in a loop. When I reboot I have to use F11 to get back into system recovery and then get almost the same error message. Just a few numbers changed and I suppose that is b/c we have different notebooks.
You can use ctrl alt delete to reboot and then also try to run some of the other commands..I went in b/c I am also getting bootmgr is missing and is the setup it wasn't turned on any longer, but it still didn't help. Anyway, I am waiting for my discs and hope they get me going again. Good Luck!

• Impossible to access BIOS configuration and boot options

I changed the hard disk after a HDD failure in my Z61m and I'm trying to reinstall Win XP but I cannot boot from CD/DVD. I'm trying to access the BIOS to check if the boot otpion from CD/DVD is enabled. I turn on the PC, hit F1, on the screen appears 'Entering BIOS Setup Utility' but after few seconds the screen becomes black and nothing happens. I tried to hit ESC instead of F1 and a boot screen appears: I can see the RAM check, the HDD is recognized and identified, but then the screen becomes black again. If I hit F1 while the RAM check is running, it appears 'Entering Setup...' but again nothing happens. With F12, it appears 'Preparing Boot Device List' for about 15 seconds and then the screen becomes black as well. The only thing I can do is turn off the PC. So, the situation is: 1) The original HDD failed: I tried it in an external SATA case and it doesn't work. 2) The new hard disk seems to be correctly recognized and identified during initial system checks. 3) The Win XP CD works: I tried it in another notebook and I was able to boot and launch Windows set up. 4) The CD/DVD player spins, its LED lights, it makes the regular sound. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I tried external monitor but it doesn't work, neither directly connected to VGA on board nor to docking station port. I mean that no images are displayed on external monitor, it stays in stand by mode without receiving any signal. Frankly I remember that on the second monitor the screen appears after Windows boot, but this is the typical thing that you see every days for years but don't care enough to remember exactly when needed

• Re: Installed Win10 Beta, now can't access BIOS/BOOT and install Win7/8

Also I may put the mSata drives into a desktop or something (gotta find a machine that supports mSata around here) and wipe the drives... this will force the mSata drives to not boot, thus *hopefully* allowing me to pick a boot option.

Well for 10 you don't need any drivers :D this thing will overwrite all your driver and replace on their own from windows update, and you can't turn off WU also anytime you can receive update that will break your system.

(vista version), made a disc with it, "fixed" my mbr... and now vista stops booting all together. something about a missing bootmanager. I love it. really. both. lenovo, and vista.
edit: lucky me, I had a dart cd to repair the boot manager. so I can at least boot again. but, still no solution to my problem... any ideas?
edit 2: I tried again. this time, no error. but still, I have the same problem with a not working thinkvantage. any ideas?
edit 3: seems like the only solution left after reviewing all hints and tips is installing rescue and recovery, but has anyone installed it on a N500 yet? does it work? does it damage the pc? which version should I install, if it works?

My MacBook Pro is having recurrent problems. Initially after installing maverick x it started working slow then it didn't boot up at all and was stuck at apple logo while start up chime was still present. Then it again started working after disc recovery option. However it agin was slow and now and then when I switched it off and started back chyme was not heard and booting was stuck at apple logo.

If the screen is actually showing something the startup chime doesn't really matter. That is actually controlled by the volume set in OS X.
That suggests your Mac is actually starting up but can't find the operating system, OS X, to boot from.
You should take the system to an Apple store to be checked out as I would think you have a hardware problem. Like the hard drive has failed.
