Yoga 3 Pro Performance issue on streaming video

I recently purchased a Yoga 3 Pro despite serious concerns about the reviews citing such poor performance from Intels new M-core processors. I had read at some point in my searching that Intel was supposedly releasing a firmware update that would essentially fix everything. I have a suspision that my issues are related to the processor. The problem I'm having can best be described as performance drop, or fps drops when playing videos in Youtube and on Twitch.tv. I've tried multipled browsers, and updates to flash. The browser is the only program running. It does not come in waves or anything, it is a constant issue on these sites. Beta.twitch.tv however does not have this issue, I believe they switched away from flash-based players. Netflix also has no issues. The issue is not a buffering issue. Maximizing the video also makes the problem worse. If anyone has any ideas or solutions I would be very much appreciated. I love the laptop and would hate to have to return because I can't get a few small parts of it to work.
Thank you!

Hi snickers, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!
Like you I read the performance reviews, so I've been trying to stretch the Yoga 3 Pro. For video I've watched YouTube, Netflix, and VUDU maximised at full screen. I've watched full-length movies. I just watched a few Twitch.tv videos. I have yet to experience any poor performance. My browser is 32-bit Chrome. I'm on a 50-100Mbps Internet connection and either 802.11n or ac.
What are the symptoms you're seeing? When you say fps drop, what are you seeing exaclty? Are you using factory default drivers?
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • MacBook (2006) HDTV Secondary Display Issue (no streaming video)

I've searched the discussions as thoroughly as I could before posting. I do not have the same issues as many others connecting their Macs to HDTVs for primary or secondary display.
I recently bought a Sony Bravia (KDL-32EX710) and displays the desktop beautifully at 1080p with just the Mini-DVI to VGA cable. However, the only thing it does not display, without a workaround, is streaming video from websites like YouTube, various Gawker media sites and similar sites. For example, going to YouTube loads the entire page with playlists, comments and the audio comes through but nothing but a black box where the video should be (controls are also hidden).
To view videos, I have to drag the Safari window to the MacBook's display to start the video then move it back over to the secondary display to view it. Or, I have to enable the video to be viewed in fullscreen (usually by chance) to be able to see the video.
Watching videos from the local/network drives are fine. Watching streaming videos from Netflix are fine (via Safari). Does this seem like a Flash issue as the problem videos seem to depend on Flash?

It seems updating Flash (for Safari, Firefox and Chrome) did the trick.

  • Quicktime Pro 7.0.3 Streaming Video and HD not working

How do I enable the streaming video for web sites to play in the webpage? All I see is a broken file image in the window where the movie should be playing.

It appears you either don't have the QuickTime plug-in installed or it is turned off.
The page worked fine for me.
Your version of Internet Explorer is showing an "image" placeholder and, obviously, QuickTime is a .mov file.
    http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount/missionimpossible_3/mission_impossible_3-tlr1h.640.mov
Open QT Player, Open URL (File menu) and paste the link above. If it plays QuickTime works. Paste the URL in a different browser and see if it works. If it does then the QT plug-in works which means the issue is with IE.
I would throw IE off my PC and get a real browser.

  • Hi, my  Retina MacBook Pro 13' can't stream videos.

I just bought it like 3 months ago branch new and it will get through a 3 minute YouTube video and stop 20 seconds in and take an eternity to load anything else. Same with flash video, same with streaming like hulu. It seems to be performing fine. I use Ableton Live music software and it handles just fine. Other apps work great like pages and VLC. I dunno, I need help though because my computer just won't stream anything! What's up?!?

It seems that the slowness is not due to your machine or any apps on your machine but rather in the speed of your Internet connection.
Since I'm a Bright House customer, I use their servers to test my broadbad speed:
Check with your Internet Service Provider to see if they offer servers for speed tests. If not, you can always use Speedtest.net to check your speed.
Using your ISPs servers will give you the closest to your 'real' speeds, however. I find that Speedtest can report as much as 10% less than your real speeds.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • My Macbook Pro seems unable to stream videos properly!

I have tried every browser and updated flash player. Videos are jittery and slow when played in full screen.

Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • Mac Pro performance issue

    Hi,
    Specs are as follows:
    2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
OS disk: Mercury Accelsior Blade ssd (6Gbps)
    SSD Scratch Disk
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
I have been looking at some benchmarking results from people with equivalent Windows machines, however they seem to be achieving much faster render and export speeds.
Can this be attributed to GPU support that im not getting? Cuda Architecture etc?
It doesnt seem to be using the machines resources to capacity is what im getting at.
Just did a test with a 1 minute long sequence (5dmkii, 720p, 24fps) with colour correction (Magic Bullet - curves, sharpening, saturation etc)
3.30 to render, seems slow to me.
    Any advice?
If this is GPU related, What cards would you recommend? how much of an improvement can I expect to achieve?
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

    Hope thats legible!
This is a screen shot of activity monitor half way through rendering the project (as originally described). didnt really fluctuate from these results throughout.
This was the reason I posted in the first place, it just doesnt seem to be utilising all its resources.
Exchanged the Magic Bullet colour correction for native three way colour corrector, curves and colour balance and it rendered in 2.05. Nearly a minute and a half faster...
Seems to be Magic Bullet then like Jim said?

  • Yoga 3 pro cant stream video on external display or laptop

Saw a previous post on this, didnt seem like it was fixed.  Having real issues with hooking up to an external display, when the web browser (chrome) is extended to the external display, my internet lags hard...i cant even stream a vid on youtube.
I've disabled realtek (fixed cracking speakers) tried a completely new cord set up from micro hdmi to dvi...nothing works.  When i drag the browser window back to the laptop screen, it works fine.
Ok, 5 min follow up:  it seems im now having the similar issue with streaming video on my laptop screen....sound streams fine, the video seems to shake back and forth very quickly, runs, then shakes again...seems to only happen intermittenltly on the laptop...but display shows real lag and shake.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Have you tried changing the screen resolution on the Yoga to something lower than what it is set on? A 1080i screen has a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080, my Yoga 3 Pro has a default resolution of 3200 x 1800. I have not tried connecting my Y3P to the TV yet, but the conversion could be causing an issue.

  • My computer will no longer stream videos? The videos are choppy and show static?

Hello! My macbook pro just recently stopped streaming videos from facebook, youtube, hulu, etc... The videos are choppy and show static. The sound play back is fine but the picture is definitely unclear. I was hoping that there was a simple solution to this as I have never had an issue with this computer before.
    Thanks,
    Charlotte

Thanks, Lawrence. I figured that was what I was going to have to do in the end. I have a few games with quite a few hours invested, and I worry that I'll lose the progress I have as they do not save to the cloud. I may have to bite the bullet, and just take the plunge to resolve this. I just want a way to easily transfer my "Home Computer" for my iPhone. My laptop is years old and in need of being replaced, and it's about time to upgrade my phone. These life events piling up are making me consider switching to a friendlier OS. I'm not using this as a threat. I just hope some apple high up will read this, and realize that we need alternatives. Life happens.
Thank you both Paul and Lawrence. I clicked "This helped me" not knowing it would remove the option to choose "This fixed my problem" too. For anyone else reading this thread. Using the guide provided has done both. It has helped me and given me a fix to my current problem. Lawrence has also provided me with the last bit of information I feel is missing from wjosten's guide. That syncing will completely erase all of your data and reinstall it in one fell swoop. It's a great fix. Even if it isn't the exact one I wanted. Thank you again!

  • Streaming video on youTube

My neighbor gave me an eMac for my 9 yr old daughter to use. I upgraded it to OS 10.4.11 and it works fine except for watching streaming videos. Both Quicktime and Flash stutter in Safari, but since I've reinstalled Quicktime it works only on Firefox. I cannot watch Youtube or Yahoo Trailers on either Safari and Firefox. I've reinstalled Flash a half dozen times, including the newest version- and an earlier 9.0.277.0 version--but the video still stutters. I've tried resetting the Pram and fixed permissions as well.
My internet connection is good, my MacBook Pro plays everything.
Is something interfering with the Flash and Quicktime? Anything else I can try?
    eMac
    OS 10.4.11
    700 MHz PowerPc G4
    1GB SDRAM
    Safari v. 4.1.2
    Quicktime v.7.6.4
    Thank you,
    Ayse Francis

    Hi Ayse,
Issues with Internet connection speeds aside, I am afraid that the age and speed of your eMac is what is causing your stuttering issues when streaming video and YouTube. Your eMac is just not up to the challenge. Plus, YouTube uses video codecs that are designed to run on more recent, modern computers.
Your eMac's CPU and, especially, the eMac's bulit-in video card are just not able to handle the type of content and codecs that a lot of streaming video sites use now. And, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the issues are from the fact that the the highest Mac OS X version you can run is OS X 10.4 Tiger. Your eMac is 6 years old and your OS version is 4 years old.
I have single 1.25 Ghz CPU with a fairly speedy video card and 2 GBs of RAM running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard on a DSL connection and I can watch streaming video in MP4 format from YouTube, but my Mac struggles, sometimes, with 720p HD videos from YouTube and can't play 1080p videos at all.
You could try and wait and load a good chunk of the video before streaming it or use a program like MacTubes to actually download YouTube content and watch it directly from your eMac without streaming it.
You may find these latter procedures may help make the experience of watching videos on your eMac a better experience.

  • Streaming Video in IE

    Hi,
I'm evaluating the Flash Streaming Server product for an
upcoming website I'm working on, and so far it's working! However,
I can't seem to explain why streamed videos viewed in Internet
Explorer are skippy. The audio stream is fine. If a user plays the
same video in Firefox, or Safari, the video is perfect and it
    doesn't skip.
Is there a known issue with streaming video to IE over other
    browsers?
Here's a link to one of the videos:
    http://www.rihanna-online.net/videos/dontstop/DontStop.html
(Note.. to avoid a possible flame post: The site isn't open
yet and I have a license to use the music video.)

    Hi! Thanks for the response!
I'm still confused though. The only problem with the theory
of a buffering issue in IE is, that even if I pause the video and
let the video buffer, then play it, the performance is the same. I
don't think it's a buffering issue. The issue is specific to IE
only. Firefox, and Safari always plays the video perfectly.
Also, I tried using the resize tool in the FLV converter, but
everytime I do, the right and bottom part of the video doesn't come
out right (the image is stretched there). The only way to avoid it
is to not use the resize tool. The only third option to drop the
quality down using the tool is to go from Medium, to Low video
quality, but the drop is too significant.
    Take care!

  • MacBook randomly shuts down while watching streaming video

I've been having a problem lately with my MacBook randomly shutting down. I initially thought it was due to overheating which was logical considering I was using my MacBook in bed and the computer was very hot when it would shut off, but I've recently started using a TV-Table top for it to sit on when I'm using it in bed. My MacBook continues to shut down and the computer isn't nearly as hot as it was prior to using the TV-Table top, it is just warm. It's definitely not a battery issue because this happens when I'm using the power source as well. *I think I've noticed that this only happens when I'm in Firefox watching online streaming video on sites such as YouTube.* I never use Safari so I'm not sure if the problem would occur in Safari or not. I tried installing the MacBook SMC Firmware Update v1.1 but it said my computer didn't need it.

I have the same problem, every once in a not-so-blue moon my macbook pro shuts down while streaming video. It only happens when streaming video. Just watched some of the new south park episode, and it shut down on me! It really ticks me off!!!!!

  • Streaming Video Jerky

I'm having an issue where, if I'm watching streaming video on Hulu or Netflix, it gets really choppy when a Time Capsule backup begins. If I stop the backup, it goes back to normal. Has anyone figured out a way to fix this?

Simultaneously streaming video (especially HD video) and performing a data backup over the network consumes a lot of bandwidth. When either or both approach the maximum available, you get the poor streaming performance that you are experiencing. (Note: The backup performance is also affected.)
To attempt to alleviate this, you would have to ensure that your network has the best possible bandwidth to provide for these activities. Gigabit Ethernet connections would be the best with 802.11n wireless next.
Anything less than either of these would unfortunately mean that the simple answer is either to not to perform backups when streaming video or not to stream video while making backups.

  • Streaming videos on Asha 200

I recently broght Asha 200, a good phone but facing one issue on streaming videos cant open please help me how to play streaming videos on asha 200 and how to configure manual gprs settings on asha 200.

    Hi,
I have a Asha 201, which, I believe has the same spec as the 200 but can use only one sim card at a time. Thank you for providing the link for the device details for the Asha 200 but I can't see on that page were it says that the Asha can't stream or download video content. I've been have a row with Nokia over this issue for my 201. As late as yesterday I was told that the Asha can stream, but can't download by customer services. Finally got an email today telling me that the Asha's OS does not support video streaming. So you were perfect correct in your reply to the original message here.  I think Nokia have got a cheek, as on the website for the Asha there is a youtube app on display which, surely implies that the phone can use the site. Anyway, if you could point me to the part of the page you provided that actually tells the customer no streaming, I be very grateful. Thank you in advance.
