Yomsemite reinstall failed, internal hdd not available to install to

Was attempting a reinstall of Yosemite due to recurring errors with Finder, TimeMachine and launch assistant after my main board was replaced. Rebooted with Cmd-C and chose to reinstall. Everything looked normal until it was around half-way finished. Then the screen went to dark grey and stayed like that for around an hour before it shut down. On reboot I get the grey screen with the "no" symbol (slashed circle). I tried rebooting from my clone drive (made with CCC every week - has worked many times before). It fails to boot past the half-way point. Finally, tried using a USB Yosemite installer, but it doesn't show the internal drive as being available to install to.
Any help would be appreciated.

Although I was unable to boot with Cmd-C it turns out I was able to boot to the recovery console with Cmd-R where I ran Disk Utility. The main partition was not repairable and required re-formatting ("Erase" in the recovery console parlance). After reformatting I rebooted into the recovery console again and was able to restart the installation. Assuming it goes well I will have a fresh install and will restore from Time Machine.
Whatever the issue was with the failed installation last time, it is likely that the issue existed before I tried the install, as I was unable to boot from the CCC clone at all.
This will be the first clean install of OS X for me since 10.2 (all others have been upgrades) so hopefully that wlll fix my issues. Once I have restored from TM I will wipe my clone and re-run CCC to be up to date - and will verify after that I can boot from the clone. Good times ....

  • Finder hangs, internal HDD "not ejected properly"

My finder hangs and then it says "disc not ejected properly", which I'm pretty sure is referring to the internal HDD (in a 1TB Fusion). I know this because in iStats the HDD drops off the monitor.
Already had the HDD replaced once per Applecare when it failed their diagnostic test, but the issue came right back, and a clean install didn't work for long. Then, Apple "repaired" it because this HDD passed their test, 2 clean installs later and I still have same issue. Safe mode, PRAM/SMC reset, nothing has worked.
Anyone seen this or know what to do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Time capsule backups failing - backup disk not available

All of a sudden I’m getting:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk is not available.
Time machine buddy’s log gives me:
    Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://*.local/Data
NetAuthConnectToServerSync failed with error: 89 for url: afp://*.local/Data
    Backup failed with error: 19
I’m connected to the Time Capsule right now (it’s how I connect to the web). I can see it in the shared list in Finder, although connection fails when trying to access it from Finder. What can I do?

Solution - I had the same thing happen to me with a Backup failed with error: 19 and what I did was this.
Stop any time machine backup in Time Machine preferences.
Go into Keychain Access in Utilities.
Go to search field and type "Local"
Delete any files that are of the kind "Time Machine Password". They should end in something like afpovertcp._tcp.local
Now turn on Time Machine back up in Preferences.
Click Select Disk and choose the volume.
You will be requested to enter the password and then it will take some time to establish the link and mount the backup volume. From there it will do a full back up.
Hope it works for you as well as it did for me.

  • "Import Mailbox" not available after installing Leopard - no email

The first time I opened Mail after installing Leopard. It found my accounts and folders but nothing was in them. Everything I've read says to "Import Mailboxes" from the Library, however that option isn't available to me. (it is in shadow). Should I re-install Leopard? Is there a way to re-install just the "mail" rather than the whole operating system?

Restarting the MBPr a second time after the update resolved the issue for me. I was updating from 10.10.2.
Prior to resolving this, the symptoms I experienced were a loss of the Bluetooth icon in System Preferences, and no option to search for Bluetooth devices in both the Mouse and Keyboard menus. The Bluetooth icon in the top menu bar also had a squiggly line going through it, and when clicked reported Bluetooth not available.

  • 13" Mid 2012 MBP. Internal hdd not seen (again...) but runs fine from USB.

I bought my MBP in December, 2012. It ran wonderfully for the first three months. With no real warning whatsoever, I got the ? Folder at startup. I did my research and tried the troubleshooting I found here and on other sites.
What it boiled down to was that I could run the hdd externally via USB just fine, but it was not detected via the internal SATA connection. I tried swapping the hdd as well, but I didn't have any luck. So, I ran my brand new MBP via USB for about two months until I got back to the U.S. (working in Afghanistan) and took it to the local Apple Store.
They checked it out, swapped the hdd, and told me it was fixed. It seemed like it for about three or four months, but I was still wary. Sure enough, the hdd failed again. This time I couldn't get it to work from the USB though, so I beleived the hdd actually failed this time. I swapped the hdd, hoping that it was that simple (back in Afghanistan, so the store wasn't an option). It ran fine for about two months this time.
Now it is not detected internally again, but runs just fine via USB. I did try a different hdd that I had on hand, and that wasn't detected either. As you can imagine, I am not excited about running a year old MBP via USB. Unfortunately my initial year of coverage ran out last month.
Does anyone have some suggestions on how I should go forward with this? I've heard great things about Apple support, but I won't be back to the U.S. for at least a month. Should I bother talking to the local Apple Store when I get back? Deal directly with a different support avenue? Am I out of luck and stuck financing my own repairs? What is the best course of action here?

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the HDD, then there may be a faulty ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard. Try replacing it.
I would also check that your RAM modules are well-seated with clean edge pins.

  • MacBook Pro Internal HDD Not Recognized

My late 2012 MacBook Pro does not seem to want to recognize internal hard drives any longer. I have pulled the original startup disk and installed it in an external hard drive case and the mac will now boot from that. The brand new replacement hard drive that I purchased (thinking the original was bad) won't show in the computer either. The mac was working fine and then crashed and refused to reboot. Thoughts on the problem? Sadly I'm very far removed from any physical mac support.
In the screen shot below you see /dev/disk0 which is the original drive connected externally and no mention of the new drive installed internally.

The symptoms point to a faulty internal connection, usually the SATA cable.  Replace that and you should be back in operation.
For a definitive assessment, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be FREE.
    Ciao.

  • Internal mic not available with Apple headphones

Hi there! I hope somebody can clear this up for me.
I often use my Apple headphones with the built-in mic to monitor my recordings on GarageBand (like listening to one track as I record another over it), but I use the internal mic to record rather than the external mic on the headphones. However, now when I plug the headphones in, there is no option for me to use the internal mic on the computer. I've looked on the system preferences and on the GarageBand preferences, and no amount of jimmying with the settings will let me record through the internal mic while having playback through the headphones. I know the headphones are somewhat damaged due to my wearing them when I exercise (the sweat and all). Is it that the headphones are damaged, or that the computer has a problem which is making using the internal mic with the headphones not an option? What should I do to fix it? Thanks so much for your help!

Please Apple fix this problem, this has been bugging me for a long time.. No solution so far...

    Hello,
At this time, one can stream about 75 live TV channels  from the iPad, Xbox 360, LG Smart TV, and Samsung Smart TV.
From the iPad, this is through the 'FiOS Mobile' app from the App store.
For a list of channels available for Live TV on the aforementioned devices, you can go to either:
http://www22.verizon.com/home/livetv and select the link 'See available channels'
    OR
http://www22.verizon.com/home/fiostv/features#connect and select the link 'your favorite TV channels'.
Keep in mind that you have to be subscribed to the selected TV channel in your FiOS TV package in order to watch that channel live.
Also, as PJL has mentioned, the live TV streaming would work only if connected to your residential home network.
Lastly, if you'd like to submit the suggestion to include international channels to live TV streaming on the iPad (and other devices), you can do so via Verizon Idea Exchange.
Suggestions for any Verizon service/product/offering on the internet, telephone or TV can be made in the 'Idea Exchange' section of the Verizon Community Forums where it'll be noticed more by other Verizon community members as well as Verizon employees who can bring up individual ideas to the appropriate teams.
Also, forum members can vote on the posted idea for greater emphasis.

  • Internal HD not available for startup

    Hi,
I cannot startup my iMac from its normal internal hard drive.
The problem started this morning when my iMac would not mount an encrypted sparse bundle (which I have used happily for the last year). As I backup my system onto an external hard drive using SuperDuper, I addressed the problem by starting up from my external hard drive. This gave me access to my sparse bundle as normal. Next (and maybe this was my mistake), I used SuperDuper to copy my now unencrypted sparse bundle back to my internal hard drive.
The problem which I am now facing is that I cannot get my iMac to resume using my internal hard drive as the startup disk. By way of additional information:
    - the internal hard drive appears in disk utility and is verified/repaired as OK;
    - the internal hard drive does not appear in Startup Disk under System Preferences (the options are just my external hard drive and network startup);
    - the internal hard drive appears as an option when I use the option key on startup but, if I select it, then the computer asks me to restart which takes me back to where I started.
I would be grateful to receive any suggestions as to how I can get my iMac to start up from its internal hard disk as normal. Alternatively, if this drive is now irretrievable, how do I safely recreate my internal hard disk from the contents of my external hard disk?
    Very many thanks.
    Mark

Thanks for all your time on this.
Some final questions before I start. Do I use the Erase option to reformat the internal drive and, if so, with what volume format? Should I perform this function on 'Macintosh HD' in the left hand column or on the drive with lots of numbers and letters which is listed above it? Finally, is it OK to do all this while using disk utility from the external drive or should I carry this out while using disk utility on my original installation disk?
it's ok to do this while booted form the external. reformat the whole drive, don't just erase. select the whole drive(not volume name) in DU and click on the partition tab. set the number of partitions to 1, format to mac os extended journaled, then click on options and select GUID if your mac is intel and Apple partition map if your mac is PPC. finally hit "apply". once the drive is reformatted clone the external onto it.
