Yosemite and Blackmagic Speed Test

Hi all, on rMBP 15" with 1tb pci-e, after upgrade to Yosemite and after a clean install, my test on Blackmagic Speed test is around 480 mb/s in writing and 970 mb/s in reading.
With Mavericks my test was around 980/1000 mb/s in writing and the 900mb/s in reading.
Someone can test PCI-E drive on macbook pro retina 15" late 2013 ???
Thanks

FileVault was the problem... after yosemite install file vault take around 1 hour to complete process. Now is again ok.

• FileVault 2 and disk speed tests

A curious thing. I have had FileVault 2 enabled on my MacBook Air (late 2010) and have been running regular disk speed tests using Blackmagic.
This week I bought a new 2GHz Air with 256GB disk and ran Blackmagic, which showed impressive 453/404 MB/s speeds. All well and good. Then I switched on FileVault 2 and decided to repeat the test to see if there was any speed degredation as a result of the encryption. Now I get an error message that the Air's disk is "read only" and Blacmagic cannot run. If I had had problems on the old Air I would have assumed FV2 was the culprit. Anyone have an idea what is behind this?

Hi, thanks. BlackMagic is in the Apple App Store. Strange thing is, I could test the speed of the SSD on the 2010 Air while FileVault 2 was switched on. I presumed, therefore, that it was compatible with FV.

• High latency and poor speed tests lately

For the past 4-5 days, I've been working with various Verizon techs to resolve a high latency/slow Internet problem. Their ultimate solution was that they have no idea why it's doing this, and since I can reach a few websites at full speed and their line tests show I'm operating at full provisioning, it's not their problem. "We can't control traffic outside of our networks." Well, my results are also showing problems with the Verizon servers, so I would think they should be more concerned. Most websites, however, exhibit the problem. So I'm stuck, looking for a better answer than "go away." Maybe some of you are experiencing a similar problem with latency or sporadic speeds?
My provisioning is 20M/5M. I'm in the L.A. area. (In the traceroutes below, I masked Hop 2 for privacy.)
I've experienced this problem with 2 computers (1 desktop, 1 laptop), both using Ethernet ports; one test using wireless on the laptop. I've plugged the router directly into the ONT coax to eliminate my house wiring as the culprit. Westell 9100EM router.
A few websites seem okay, and speedtest.net results always show provisioning at full speed to the L.A. server, but the problem persists when using the non-L.A. server. With speakeasy.net, even the L.A. server exhibits the problem. The latency gets worse as the night goes on, sometimes over 1000ms for some traceroute hops. In the morning, it seems to be back to normal.
Thanks for any help....

Solved!
Go to Solution.

MisterJefferson, your problem looks to be with hop #3. That is a Verizon router just after the gateway router for you. This will need to be addressed by a Verizon Network technician. Your hops to your router and your hop to the gateway look fine. Verizon will need to reboot that second router or re-route your hops.
Chernabog, yours is more difficult, you dont have any obvious big issue. However you do have a moderate jump at hop number 8. this is off the verizon network and is out on the internet. on one of the ATT routers. Unlikely you are going to be able to do anything about this. And as it is off the Verizon network, there would be nothing verizon could do about it either. Usually though, if it is a router needing rebooting, it will generally self correct after a few days. Or you could be unlucky enough to be going through a system that is overloaded or just plain old. This can be frustraiting. I myself play a lot of online games and if the server is in Washington DC (I'm in California) one of the hops I have to go through is in kentucky with sprintlink and their routers constantly give me a 500ms ping and I havent been able to get it corrected in over 4 years. Something we sometimes have to live with when it is out of our control.

Agreed! This bug with the ringtone delay (№4.1) is really annoying

• Replacement HD reliability and speed tests

Hi,
Does anyone know if there has been a review of replacement HDs anywhere?
I want to replace my 60GB drive with a new, bigger one (running out of space) but want to read some reviews about different manufacturers reliability and comparative speed tests before I buy. - I don't want to go in blind and end up with a noisy, slow drive that crashes after 12 months!
I googled it but go nowhere after an hour!
I've read all the threads here about how to do the change and what spec to look for - thanks (very informative)
Thanks very much for your help.

Thanks - that is just the kind of thing I found - stand alone reviews by a shop.
What I am after is a comparison between competing brands - a Kind of Which? review with a 'best buy' in terms of cost per GB vs performance vs reliability. You know the sort of thing - magazines seem to do it all the time.
I know there has been much talk of 5400 vs 7200rpm - I don't need my mac to be running as fast as possible all the time, so i think that the 7200rpm HDs would be unnecessary - more expensive and I wouldn't use the extra performance.
All I need is more space, so a 160GB 5400rpm drive would be ideal I think.
Thanks

• Network speed test throughput monitor

I am looking for a quick and dirty speed test to continously monitor the bidirectional throughput of a transponder and POE device while they are undergoing environmental testing.
Would be nice if it could log throughput, dropped packets, and bit error rates between two computers and did not crash when a fault causes one end to stop responding like the C program we have now.
Our C programmer looks at us like we are insane when we ask him to not stop display an errror if the client or server times out.

Yes, I know how to handle and suppress errors in LabView. I was mainly looking for a good example on a network speed test.
The test we have uses was written by one of our software guys, it uses two computers in a client-server arrangement and stops and displays an error message when the client computer loses connection to the server. Regardless of the reasoning I have given the programmer refuses to change it because he wrote the test for him and that's how he wants it.
I want a program that can use one computer with two network cards.
It will send a data stream out one NIC, through the UUT, and back in the other NIC.
Where it Will be checked for errors and dropped packets, and sent back through the UUT.
A continuous throughput speed measurment will also be logged along with errors, dropped packets, and retries.
I have never used any of the LV networking, tcp, etc VI's and was hoping someone had done this before because I do not have time to start from scratch.

• IOS7 wifi and LTE speed very slow.

iOS7 wifi and LTE speed very slow compared to iOS6. This was proven with Safari and using speed test app.

I have exactly the same problem symptom ever since installing iOS7. Toggling the FaceTime or the LTE settings alleviated the problem until I installed the latest version on IOS (7.0.4- 11B554a). Now the bug is permanent, a Network Reset will not work anymore, a System Reset will work only for the first execution of Speedtest.
Looks like the network software is throttling LTE speed to the minimum (.50 Mbps) up/download speed no matter what. Now unlimited Data means nothing, maybe AT&T wants me to go to Verizon or Tmobile.
I reported this problem to AT&T Sept 26 when I first installed IOS7, they told me there was no problem really that I needed to wait for the LTE network congestion to go away...? Since I found a circumvention by toggling LTE I did not pursued the problem...
After reporting the problem again this morning, they sent me to the AT&T store to change the SIM card.... I will try this and report back if it fixes the problem... Although I doubt it will fix anything but burn and extra hour of my day. The AT&T rep said that if the new SIM card doesn't fix the problem I need to go to Apple for them to give me a new Iphone....???? I guess there are many iPhones gone bad after installing IOS7 (sarcasm).
If you have this same problem, please post here so that I am able to get back to AT&T with some leverage to get them to remove the choking of LTE. Basically, if everyone accepts the new low speeds, then, unlimited data is no longer a problem for this phone company.

• Reads and Write Speed

Hello guys
I have a question. I bought the Refurnished Mac Book Pro Retina 13.3 inch(Mid 2014) basic model(8GB memory, 2.6GHz CPU, 128GB SSD)
And Since I did buy from the refurnished, I am pretty suspicious about the performace. So I used the benchmark test and Read and Write speed test(Black magic speed test). Benchmark test was about average to most of the same Macbook pro users, but the read and write speed was pretty slower than any other. It was about 220 MB/S for Write and 560MB/S for Read. It that means something wrong with my Macbook?
Thank you very much for your reading all of this

Hi Ralphael,
I was thinking of buying the WD MyCloud box and your words of wisedom inspired me to take a risk, getting one of these for myself. It's always a gamble buying new technology bits and hoping it will do, what you expect it to do.
First thing I did was connect the WD MyCloud to my network (entrirely 1 Gb network capable ports - including router).I updated the firmware to the latest via the network connection, which was reasonably quick to update.
Everything worked perfectly, straight from go, the 3 Tb of data I had on my former Seagate GoFlex (manually connected to a SATA port on my P.C) only took a few hours to completely copy across. I tried transferring the wholelot across via the Seagate GoFlex 100mB/s ethernet port, but that was horrendously slow.
I loved the way I could get access to this device, via the internet, (wd2go.com) to the files stored on my WD MyCloud (at home). It indeed acted as a "Cloud" device for me as I could map the connection to a network drive on my P.C and then
copy files across to my P.C (wherever I am) - Just drag and drop from explorer and it's pretty quick to transfer across as well.
I just wanted to say this box is fanatastic and I am very happy with it. I know there have been a few critics out therewho haven't had good things to say, but I think they need to make sure everything fits the criteria for successful results,
which this device is well capable of producing. I had the experience of using a Seagate GoFlex device and that took a while before I got things working reasonably
well for me. It's good to have a device that now well exceeds the capability of this former device.
Very happy with this WD MyCloud and my experiences with it.
Added Kudos for your article.
Cheers
Patrick

• E1200 Router with poor signal and low speeds

Hello, I just bought an E1200 router, which is downstairs and about 50 ft away from me. I have only about 60% signal strength, and my speed test when connected wirelessly is only 5mbit up,4mbit down. I plugged my computer into the router via ethernet and I get 30mbit up, and 5mbit down.
Are there any settings you could suggest to improve this? I tried several channels already, none above 60% it seems.
Thanks!

• Line speed at 4.3 MBPS speed test at 100 KBPS

The following is an account of what lead up to the problem I currently in a hope this presents a clear fix to the problem.
On Tuesday the 17th of September the landline telephone stopped working and the speed of the Internet dropped form the normal speed test of 2MBPS to around 100kps (variable but not by much). After doing basic tests on the network and phones and because of the present problem with the phone as well as the Internet (although why it remained up just very slow is unknown to me) I thought it must be a problem that openreach had to deal with
narually an openreach engineer was phoned and he arrived on Friday 21st and tested the line; no fault was found in the phone line (this had mysteriously fixed it self) and the speed tested at the line was 4.3 MBPS this was higher then i normally receive so it surprised me after I did a speed test speed remained at 100KBPS. Since there was no fault on the line (currently) the openreach engineer went home. and i began touble shooting the network.
Network lay out
line > bt home hub (modem > switch) > business firewall > switch1(connected to PC1)> swtich2(connected to PC2,PC3,PC4,network drive)
after checking the whole network the fault was at the modem, after testing the modems internal switch there is no loss of speed at the modems switch.
Modem clams line speed is 4MBPS
speed test 100KBPS
the hub maybe at fault i have already reset many times

• Difference between BT Broadband Speed Test and all...

I have recently moved to BT Broadband from TalkTalk as I was dissatisfied with the speeds that I was getting with my TalkTalk line – they were OK outside of peak time but woeful in peak time. With TalkTalk, I was on their ‘up to’ 8Mbps which, in practice, translated to about 6Mbps for download outside peak times but dropped to below 1 Mbps in peak (around 500Kbps and sometimes even lower!) – these measurements were taken regularly with both the TalkTalk and Think Broadband speed tests which were usually roughly in agreement and I haven’t had to rely on memory as I downloaded the spreadsheet records available to Think Broadband registered users.
I am now posting this in the hope that somebody can explain the difference between the BT Broadband Speed Checker (Here) and all the others available on the web.
When you are first connected to BT Broadband they warn you that your speeds will vary over the first ten days while they test your line to ascertain optimum speeds for it. During that time, I checked it every day early, mid-day and evening (usually around 0630, 1230 & 2000 hrs) with Think Broadband and, yes, it did vary – the first day it started at around 1Mbps for download but rose to 10Mbps by the end of the day. On the second day, it rose to a peak of 17.8Mbps which was unbelievably fast to use (well, to me anyway) but never reached that speed again as over the rest of the ‘test period’, the download speed dropped and dropped to the point where I am now outside of the BT test period and consistently seeing only 2 to 2.5Mbps over a 24 hour period.
I emphasise that those speeds were all recorded using Think Broadband but I am now doing tests using the BT checker mentioned above and the speeds which BT indicate for downloads are consistently in the 14 to 18 Mbps range. If I do the BT and TB test in quick succession, they generally show the BT calculated speed to be better than that of TB by a factor of around 7 (ie. TB at 2 Mbps whilst BT show 14Mbps). Now either they are measuring different things (or the sams things differently) or one of them is lying – all I know is that my general browsing experience is slower outside of peak times and I can tell by the time it takes to load pages.
I might have misunderstood something in these tests but I am now beginning to regret that I fell I for the BT sales pitch which promised me ‘up to’ 20 Mbps but ‘more likely’ 17 Mbps. I have tried to discuss thisl with BT Broadband technical support but they were no use whatsoever – indeed, I got the impression that he was reading from a script and as it didn’t cover my issue, I was wasting my time – it would also have helped for English to be his first language!
According to the BT test, I am well within their ‘minimum guaranteed access speed’ (Here). for my area (about 4Mbps) and therefore cannot do anything about it. BUT that is only when measured using the BT speed tester – with any other, I am well below. I am beginning to feel very conned and might even start looking to withdraw from BT if I cannot get this settled.
Can anybody help. I will happily post detailed records of my various tests or router stats if they will help.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
No, it was Apple. Last night the movie (Argo) was downloaded. It took about an hour, however it did not open.
I can watch the preview, but can't open it.

• Safari - speed tests and pings

Hi
Not sure this is a Safari 6.x or 7.x problem as prior to upgrading to Mavericks I was experiencing similar issues.
On our work network, 200MB leased line, we're connecting our Mac estate over CAT6 yet we're experiencing extremely slow loading and hanging with Safari.
Having run some speed tests using other browsers and Network Utility it's apparent that there is an issue with Safari on upgraded machines and those 'out of the box' machines.
Ping tests on Chrome and NU are approx 1-3ms which is what we would expect (PCs are always 1ms), however in Safari ping tests range from 30-500ms constantly. We cannot get it below 30ms.
We have reset browsers, turned off extensions and still no joy.
Anybody else noticed the difference in speed?
Thanks

I am guessing that you are running a 'broadband' speed-test. These run their tests either in Adobe Flash or Javascript, the web-browser itself cannot do 'pings'. The different therefore is more likely to be how fast either Javascript or more likely Flash runs in a particular browser.
If you want to test a ping test at a computer level then you should either do this in Terminal.app by typing
ping address.to.ping
or use Network Utility which used to be in the Utilities folder but is now in /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications
Note: Most broadband speedtest sites do not work well on corporate high-speed leased-lines like yours, they have been designed for testing ADSL level speeds of up to 20Mbps and not leased-lines of 100Mbps or more.
I would not expect a ping response of below 10ms for any host outside your own local network no matter the speed of your link, however anything above 30ms would equally be considered slow for a leased-line. A mobile phone over a mobile data link would (alas) typically get much slower ping responses.

• Brand new user of Extreme and express - surprising speed test results

Dear All,
I had been using a linksys wireless router connected to a 20mps cable connection to send a wifi signal around my home. After a fair bit of research I upgraded to an airport extreme (wanted benefit of the gb ethernet ports and simultaneous dual band which the linksys did not have.)
So airport extreme set up nicely and speed test.net says I have download speeds of 19.23mbps on both my ipad and my macbook pro (2010). Signal does drop off in one part of the house so after a chat with the apple sales guy I also picked up an airport express to use as an extender. Using the excellent advice on this board mostly from Bob Timmons (found on a search) I was able to set express up and place in the part of the house where the signal didn't previosuly reach. It worked. So far so good. But, then an issue.
When the express is plugged in mbps on speed test drops from 19mbps to 4mbps on both the macbook pro and the ipad. Switch of the express reconnect the devices to wifi (I guess now they are focussing on the airport extreme) and speeds return back to the 19mbps!. Why would this be? And is there any way to fix it? The extra range is useful but not at the expense of all that speed.
thanks
Josh

Setup looks correct.
Have you tried some different channel settings to see if another channel might work better?
For 5 GHz, you would want to choose one of the higher numbered channels 149, 153, 159, 161 and make sure that "enable wide channels" is checked in Wireless Options.
For 2.4 GHz the lower numbered channels are usually more crowded, so you might try one of the higher numbered channels for that band, maybe 9, 10, 11.
Apple routers seem to be very sensitive to interference. If you have a cordless phone there, try powering it off for 45-60 minutes and restarting the Extreme and Express to see if that makes any difference.
If you have time, you can scan to see what other networks are working around you with a utility like iStumbler.
If you do this, you may be surprised that "full bars" is not as much signal strength as you might have thought. The "bars" are there pretty much for show. They really don't tell you much about the real signal strength on the network and they don't tell you anything about noise on the network, which can drag down speeds.

• Ipad and Iphone WIFI speed tested weird results

Hi:
Just to help (or make it worse).
I am sitting at my desk and testing my IPad and my Iphone.
I am running the speedtest app from the app store.
The Iphone consistenly gets 14+mbit download (I have a 50mbit ISP link) and just under 5mbit Upload (I have a 5mbit upload link).
The IPAD gets at BEST 7.8mbit down, but also gets just under 5mbit up. So it's even weirder than it seems. The IPAD gets the same upload speed and 1/2 the download speed.
I am testing them on the same network, same location, same everything (wireless G only setting on Router). I am testing them one after the other not simultaneously.
Oh and I couldn't get the IPAD to connect to Wirless N AT ALL.

I guess you both are new here.
Lots of iPad users are plagued by terrible slow wifi connections. There was a thread here "weak wifi" with over 80,000 views and 37 pages of replies.
I too had the same issue then I changed my N capable router to G only mode and my speed Is amazing. Well this is not a solution but hopefully temporary work around until apple comes out with a firmware update.
Write to apple in their iPad feedback form so that they listen to it.they don't look at the forums supposedly.

Bottom line here is you guys are not alone.
Regrads,
