Yosemite Applications folder inaccessible
Hi,
Following a recent upgrade to Yosemite on my Mac mini the Applications folder icon is greyed out and disabled. The only way to open the folder is to use Go/Go To Folder... in the menu bar. Has anybody else got this problem?

Here are the screenshots: one of the Finder window and one of the Info for the Applications folder. The sidebar iApplication items are /Applications for the top one and ~/Applications for the second one. Clicking on the top one has no effect whilst clicking on the second one take me to the correct place.
The folder preview is different from the actual icon and the permissions and sharing items look a little strange.
The permissions for the folder using terminal are:
d---rwxr-x@ 68 root admin 2312 10 Apr 17:55 Applications
which again look odd. Disk utility repair permissions did not come up with anything.

Applications folder inaccessible through finder?
So I recently downloaded an application that I decided I wanted to delete. However, when I try to go to "Applications" by clicking on it through the Finder sidebar, It shows up blank for a split second and then the window dissapears. When I look in the Applications folder under my name in /Users/, the folder is empty. When I try to "get info" on the folder in my finder sidebar, it is unable to calculate the size. When i search "Applications" in spotlight, there are no results, for both applications and the folder itself. When I try to access my applications by clicking on an application in the dock and selecting "Show in Finder", the window appears and dissapears again. I have tried getting a system update and restrating my computer and finder multiple times, but nothing is working. Also, sometimes my background photo and my dock dissapear and are replaced by a gray background.
I would try finding and opening Disk Utility and running a permissions repair on the drive in question.
If you can't find or run Disk Utility, try this if you still have your Mac OS install CD:
• Insert the disk and Hold c or option key down and tap the power button to boot from the installer disk. Let the installer start, but before actually installing:
• Select Disk Utility from under the Installer Utilities menu at the top of the screen.
• Select your drive or partition on the left, click First AId > Repair Disk & Permissions.
If you are a 10.7+ user - hold command r to boot from Lion Recovery HD partition (only, use no disks), it's a bootable section on the boot drive itself that's like install cd.
• Select Disk Utility from the menu option.
• Select the drive or partition on the left, click First Aid > Repair Disk & Permissions. -
I reinstalled operating system software on my MacBook Air (Yosemite 10.10.3) and tried reinstalling Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. I was able to install the software into my Applications folder but I was unable to enter the serial number or go any further with the installation. When I click on the Adobe Acrobat icon in the Applications folder, nothing happens.

No files in applications folder after installing yosemite
Problem description:
After installing yosemite on MBP (early 2011) the applications folder is empty. How do I get them Back? Further the fan is blowing all the time and the MBP gets very warm.

Can't find the Applications folder after upgrading to Yosemite
I was successful in upgrading my Macbook from Snow Leopard to Yosemite. So I installed Photoshop Elements 13. It seemed to work until I closed out of Photoshop. I couldn't find the Applications folder or the Photoshop program. Would like to know any hints on what I could try in order to bring up my Applications folder, where Photoshop is likely still stored.

I've done a little research and tried several of the terminal commands with no change. Her apps folder isn't horribly large and there aren't any odd applications in her folder. Anyone have any ideas about this?

Yosemite: empty Applications folder and Dock crashes after right-click
I upgraded my mid-2010 Macbook Pro to Yosemite, and am observing two problems: 1) my Applications folder is empty, except for the "Windows 7 Applications" subfolder related to Parallels; and 2) if I right-click on a Dock icon, the dock effectively crashes. When I view the Activity Monitor, Dock is consuming a huge amount of system resources (typically between 100% and 200%) and loginwindow and lsregister aren't far behind (around 60% - 100%). My battery life is awful - I've been using my computer for about 30 minutes and am below 60% after starting with a full charge.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Test if the Finder/Desktop/Dock works right while in Safe Mode, reboot when complete, test again.
If it works in Safe Mode but not a regular bootup, then Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Check the Other row in System Preferences.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Yosemite Empty Applications folder NO Launchpad
I have had numerous problems since Yosemite install.
Most of which have either been fixed (by the community... no thanks Apple) or have work arounds.
But this is the most frustrating and still occurring.
I cannot get finder to "see" my applications folder.
This not the "missing icons" adjust the columns error, but only occurs with applications.
Now using terminal I have checked the directory and they are certainly there.
I can run applications if they are pinned to my dock... but launchpad just comes up with a Blue screen with Loading Applications... on it
This is a iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) so perhaps getting to the end of its cycle, but still a very usable computer... or was.
It does have multiple user accounts on it and I have read that this may be an issue, but have seen no fix.
I have reset all permissions.. in multiple ways.
Really looking to the community for an answer please.The application folder on the hard drive is one that can/could be accessed by multiple user accounts.
All software you install will install in that location by default, so as to be available to all users of the computer. This is not in any way detrimental to performance so no need to worry.
Unless you have a specific need to limit other accounts access to certain programs, I would not ever bother with the user level application folder. New macs do not come with anything installed in this folder. I doubt that its contents were erased, most likely you thought you were viewing the user level application folder when in fact you were looking at the "global" one.

Missing apps in Applications Folder
I recently installed Yosemite on a clean hard drive. I reinstalled all my purchased apps from the app store. All the apps appear in Launchpad but several don't show up in the Finder applications folder. Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers, Pages and Photoshop Elements are present in Launchpad but missing from the applications folder. Since they are not in the applications folder I can't include them in stacks of similar programs and launch them from the dock. I have to launch from Launchpad and they all launch just fine. This isn't a real big deal but it's inconvenient. Any ideas why the apps aren't listed in the applications folder?

Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the programs are install but are not in the Application folder. I would recommend that you read this article, you may be able to find the programs this way and add them to the dock.

Preview has sudden;y quit working on my 13" Macbook with OSX Yosemite 10.10.2. It is stuck in the dock with a black dot below the icon suggesting it is open but it is not active. When I try to re-open Preview from the Applications folder on my hard drive it tells me Preview is no longer open. How do I re-open it?

I can do a search and find a specific application located on the hard drive - so I haven't deleted them. But I want the Application folder with the different applications back in Finder. I'm kind of hesitant about starting a search in areas I know nothing about. Can anyone help?

The sidebar in a Finder window can be easily modified, so it's possible that the Applications folder may have been accidentally dragged out of it. You should be able to drag it back on from its current location (Macintosh HD > Applications), as outlined in the following article:

Strange CmActDiagLog files appearing in applications folder
I was hoping someone could help me identify what these log files are that recently started showing up in my app directory in Yosemite.
There are 7 files that are labeled CmActDiagLog all with different dates.
CmActDiagLog2015-02-16-214919.log
After doing some investigation I think they have something to do with com.wibu.CodeMeter.Server but I am not certain.
Hopefully someone is familiar with this. Below is a terminal report I ran that may help.

/Applications Folder not opening in Finder but works in Terminal
Hi guys,
I recently upgraded to Yosemite, but I'm not sure if this is a Yosemite-related bug.
My application folder (/Applications) does not open in finder (see screenshots)
The spinner keep spinning in the bottom right corner.
Also, when I "Get Info", it keeps calculating the size and never completes.
Also, when I drag the Applications folder to the dock, nothing happens.
However, it works fine in Terminal:
$ cd /; ls -lh
drwxrwxr-x+ 129 root admin 4.3K Oct 17 03:14 Applications
When I go inside the Applications folder (in terminal), I can list all the files in it.Oddly enough, most of them are greyed out, and it only says "total 8" when I have way more than 8 apps.

I can even open my apps in Terminal:

Does anyone know how I can see my Applications in Finder?
I've tried the usual Disk Utility (verify/repair permissions) and even reinstalled a fresh copy of Mac OSX Yosemite (using recovery).
Note: I did mess around with ~/Library/Preferences immediately after installing Yosemite because of the background flashing bug (I deleted some plists files to fix that bug).

Well in that case the options I see are…
1.
This seems like a 'defaults write tweak' or similar system level modification that is failing on the latest OS.
Revert any applied system tweaks from apps like Secrets or Onyx, that is if you remember applying any (these can be things like 'no-glass dock', no shadows on screenshots etc).
Your Terminal may have the command history saved. Try 'history' in that app to see if you have any 'defaults write' changes listed. Post them here for help to revert them.
It seems likely to me that the 'background flashing bug' mentioned earlier by helloziy was fixing a bad defaults write setting (preferences store the defaults write tweaks). If you have one 'bad tweak', there are probably others elsewhere on the system.
2.
I would consider backing up, erasing the internal disk & clean installing the OS. Migrate ONLY your user data back to the new install (avoid Applications & 'other files' - they could be the reason for this issue). You will need to reinstall apps as you need them.
3.
Another possibility is using EtreCheck to view what everyone has installed & running…

It would basically be a case of comparing affected reports & then removing or reinstalling apps until something changes (a crapshoot).
Etrecheck will not tell you about any 'defaults write' or other system modifications.
4.
I'd backup & consider removing all system preferences. This is drastic & may break many things until you alter the default settings!
Reboot into recovery mode & remove the contents of /Library/Preferences from the boot disk, it will need to be done in Terminal.
You need to do this when the OS isn't running because Mac OS will cache preferences and some values will be written back to new files even after deleting the original files. Keep a backup of the files handy incase the OS breaks on next reboot!
Sorry it's not a solution, but it may help some diagnosis that get you closer to one. -

Look in your Dock for the installers Application icon.
Command+Click this icon in the Dock
A Finder window should appear with the installer selected, you can 'Get Info' on that item to see the full file path to work out where it is, or enable the 'Path bar' in Finder's view menu, that also shows the folder path to the selected item.
If you are hoping to install 10.9 on another Mac you may find it is best to create a bootable installer on a USB disk…

My iPhoto download is stuck. To the right, there is a greyed-out "Pause" button, and to the left of that, the word "Waiting".
I tried putting the iPhoto download into the Trash (from the Applications folder) but it won't stay in the trash - just keeps popping back into the folder.
Have looked all over online and tried lots of things but no luck. I don't even know where to ask.
