Yosemite cannot mount external disks

Since I upgraded to Yosemite my IMAC does not mount external disks, even the bright new one I bought
I have also a Macbook Air that I upgraded to Yosemite and these same external disks can be mounted on the Macbook Air.
I have searched on the Apple support community and on the internet and quite some people whom upgraded to Yosemite have the same problem.
I checked the USB specs on both the IMAC and the MACbook Air

I have read that if you turn Spotlight off you will have no problems. Open Spotlight, choose "privacy", click the "+" at the lower left and add what you do not Spotlight to search. Worked for me. I have 2 internal Seagates formatted OS X journaled in an external case.

After installing Yosemite I cannot use Time Machine anymore because the external disk (WD My Passport Edge) cannot be mounted. Does someone know what to do? Thanks in advance for your help.

Cannot mount external USB drive

During a recent update I remember pacman asking about replacing some package with another package to handle disk mounting. I think the added package was "gnome-volume-manager" or "gnome-disk-utility" (or both). I didn't see any postings describing problems with doing this, so went ahead and allowed the change. Now it's a few days later and I find I cannot mount an external USB hard drive anymore. It has an entry in fstab, and although I have tried mutiple edits of the device to associate the drive with, nothing works.
The disk used to associate with /dev/sdb1. Now this device no longer exists. Here is what has happened to my /dev/sd* entries:

Trying to force association with "/dev/sdb" "/dev/sda5" (or some other number not in use) or "sdb1" (or 2,3,4, whatever) just yields "special device ... does not exist".
Does anybody know how to deal with this?
Does anybody know what package(s) I replaced when the update in question took place? I think I'd like to reverse whatever happened.
And on another note, I think another gnome-based package also recently replaced a package relating to printing. Yesterday I discovered I have printing problems too:
At first there were no printers found. Although cups is supposed to start according to rc.conf, cupsd was not running. I started it manually and then all the printers showed up again, though I cannot print duplex (again, worked fine before). What is going on with these gnome packages?!? Anyone know which package(s) I need to remove (and then what to put back) to make printing work like it used to also?

oddly, fdisk -l shows nothing, even for disks which are mounted (eg. /dev/sda4). when I insert a standard USB thumb drive, the following show up properly:

and I am able to mount and use the drive as usual.
The external drive I've been struggling with has xfs for filesystem type. After using the thumb drive, /dev/sdb showed up spontaneously, but no /dev/sdb1. attempting to mount gives:
mount: /dev/sdb is not a valid block device
or
mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist
depending on which device is specified in fstab.
I am thinking that either a) my ability to mount xfs filesystems has somehow been hosed, or b) there is something wrong with drive, which must have spontaneously failed very recently (it is less than 1 yr old, but this happens from time to time).
If the drive is okay, any ideas about how mounting xfs filesystems could have been broken by recent upgrades?
btw, the fstab entry (which worked fine until a couple days ago) is: /dev/sdb1 /mnt/external_1 xfs rw,noauto,user,exec 0 0

Cannot mount USB disk in SIngle-user mode (solaris 10)

I need some help please :
I can read/write to my USB disks when i'm in muti-user mode but when to I swith to single-user mode ( init S ), I cannot mount it.
in Single-user mode , i started volume management daemon :
#/etc/init.d/volgmt start
#volcheck
but i'm still not able to mount it.
I tried to mount manually:
#mount /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpoint , i have this error: < mount : not a UFS magic number ( 0x0) , dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 is not of this fstype.
My system recognizes the USB device though in single-user mode:

The USB drive was actually a FAT filesystem.
so I did # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /testpoint and everything went fine
I can read/write to my USB disks when i'm in

Looks like it's assuming UFS. If this is a pcfs
filesystem, give it the type on the mount line.
# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /testpointYeah, this was the right command, I had to specify option < -F pcfs >.
but I read somethere on this forum i had to specify :c as the drive for FAT at the end of c2t0d0p0 , so the full command was:
# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0:c /testpoint

Cannot mount storage disk after running "reboot -- -r"

I have a server installed Solaris Sparc u4 and integrated with a storage. When executing "reboot -- -r" or "init 6", the storage disk cannot be mounted after system startup again. The output of console said "

I really added item into /etc/vfstab which is "/dev/md/emads/dsk/d50 /dev/md/emads/rdsk/d50 /home ufs 2 yes global,logging ".
But, if I use "reboot" instead, the storage disk can be mounted normally.
I'm so confused. Could you please tell me the cause and solution? Well, I don't wanna use "mountall" every time after the system is rebooted.

Mounting External Disks[freeagent]

Hi everyone.
I have the following setup.
--> 5 Macpros with 1 external disk[freeagent] each
--> 5 users share Files using LAN
--> In each Macpros, there are 2 users, 1 admin and 1 standard user
I noticed that when an Admin user is logged, all disks mounted which includes the external disks, are seen in the network but when a Standard user is logged on, the disks mounted are not seen.
How do I fix this? I am not familiar on how to setup the permissions/rights for this.. Using windows I can fix this.
I don't want the users to log in as Admin. They should be using the standard account and be able to share whatever disks they have mounted and be seen in the local network.

Cannot See External Disk in TM

My iMac has an internal disk, plus a 1TB external disk, for data.
I also have a 2nd 1TB external disk for TM.
My external data disk went offline (TM disk still online). TM shows nothing there for my external data disk (not even an icon).
Did I do something wrong in my settings, or does TM not support backup of multiple disks?

TM does support backups of multiple disks and if you set it up correctly that disk should have been backed up. It has to be formatted mac os extended journaled. then TM will back it up automatically unless you add it to the TM exclusion list.
click on your computer name in the sidebar (check the box to show the computer in the sidebar in Finder preferences). start TM and scroll back in time to when the data drive was attached. it should show up on the list and you can restore things from there.

Cannot find external disk

I have two external disks attached to my system. One is attached via USB to an Airport Extreme. It is used as the target for Time Machine backups from both my iMac and my MacBook Pro. Software is up to date on both machines. The other disk is used for user files and is attached directly to the iMac by USB.
"Suddenly" the backups failed, because the connection to the disk failed. Neither disk appears in Finder. I've tried some cable and port swapping, rebooted, etc. but still have no clue what's happening.

Time machine cannot see external disks

Hi,
Time machine is not seeing my external hard disk (an iomega Storcenter network hard drive). However, I can see and access files from this external disk as usual on my network.
I want to use Time machine to back up to this disk. Can anyone help me please?

No, sorry. Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or a drive on another Mac on the network that's running Leopard. It will back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and requires a running a Terminal command to make it work.

You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.

Vista PC's connect to network but cannot mount TC disks!!!!

I will start by saying that I have never had a problem with connectivity between my iMac and Macbook.
I have 2 PCs in the house running Vista. Both can connect wirelessly to the TC and access the internet through this without a problem. However when trying to connect the disks (TC disk and also one connected USB drive) I get an error.
Error reads "Unknown User, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the Disk's administrator (67)." I know the password I entered is correct.
TC firmware version is 7.4.2
File sharing is enabled.
Secure shared disks with TC password
AirPort Disk guest access is Read and Write
WIndows workgroup is set the same as on the Vista machines.
WINS Server is blank.
The frustrating thing is that it used to work just fine and it appears that this is a recent event (the kids have been complaining for a while and I have only just now got around to looking at it seriously).
When I first purchased my TC 9 months ago we were a Windows only household. There was never any problem with connecting to the drives. It appears that the connectivity has got progressively worse over time.
At one stage I dumped the Windows AirPort utility and just tried to manually map the TC and other drive within windows (i.e. select Map Network drive, enter IP address of TC and then select the shared name) This worked for a while but now windows will not even see the shared drives. The TC is visible on the network considering it is the point where the two PCs connect.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get the two Vista PCs to connect?

OK. I have had a closer look at things and believe I am closer to identifying the source of the problem.
It appears that I am unable to use the Airport Agent to mount the disks because of the (so-called) "smart" firewall in Norton 360.
If I disable the Norton firewall I am able to get the disks mounted (mapped).
Now I do not want to have to permanently disable the firewall just so I can access the disks.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to configure the firewall so that it allows communication between the Vista PC and the TC? (i.e. any specific ports to open, protocols to allow, etc.)
It is also interesting to note that I get the same problem is I manually map the disks from within Windows Explorer (i.e. no problem with firewall disabled but constant invalid password with firewall active).

[SOLVED][XFCE] Cannot mount usb disks & manage network connections

Hi guys,
I'm using XFCE with 3.3.1-1 kernel. Since yesterday I'm not able anymore to automatically mount usb disks, manage my WiFi networks (networkmanage connects to the default access point but I can't select another AP nor editing my settings). I'm also prompted to type my password when I clik on the shutdown icon;
So it seems I lost some privileges but I can't figured out why...
I still belong to the same grousp as before:

lp wheel games video audio optical storage scanner power users
Does anybody has an idea where to take a look?

Cannot mount external but if I run disk verifty it mounts

I'm just wondering why: I have an external firewire drive (Porsche) than will not mount if I unmount it saying I should run disk first aid.
When I run Repair or Verify it will mount without finding any problems.
If I unmount I have the same situation again. Has anyone had this happen?

This seems to be a bug. You may be able to work around it by booting from a Recovery system on another storage device.
If you have a "clone" backup on another drive — not a partition on the same drive — boot from it by holding down the option key at the startup chime and selecting its icon in the Startup Manager display. Launch Disk Utility and repair your primary startup volume — not the one you're booted from.
If you have a Time Machine backup on a locally-attached storage device — not a network device such as a Time Capsule — there should already be a Recovery system on that device. Boot from it and repair in the same way as above.
Otherwise, use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a Recovery system on a spare storage device, such as a USB flash drive, and boot from that device. All existing data on the Recovery device will be permanently erased.
Make sure you have a current backup before doing anything.

Cannot mount external drives

Hi all!
I have an 2010 imac i5 32GB RAM, running on 10.9.2.
All of a sudden my machine does not mount ANY extrenal hard drive. It recognises them in Disk Utility, but they appear greyed and cannot be mounted. Not even disk repair. Last week though the drives were mounting on the system without any problems.
Yesterday I have upgraded the OS to 10.9.2. (from 10.6.8). Still the same problem, the drives are recognisable in DU but cannot be mounted.
All of the disks I've tried are NTFS format (originally formatted on a pc). Funny thing is I have VMware Fusion on my mac runing a virtual Windows 7 pc. Windows do recognise the drives and mount them without problem, but not the mac.
Also note that I'm using Tuxera NFS to work with these drives with no problem so far, until now.
Also checked the cables, I'm connecting the drives though USB ports, they are ok.
Any suggestions?

just guessing you are using USB to mount the external. you may need to use two usb ports to mount the drive. that means a cable with two usb connectors which should provide enough power to the external.

Cannot mount external USB drive with FDisk_partition_scheme

Due to some recent mac issues in my lab, we updated one of the computers to Maverick 10.9.4 from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 yesterday. Anyhow, this seems to have erased the ability of the mac to read or mount several identical USB drives with the NTFS format (WD My Passport Ultra 500GB USB3.0). It could do it yesterday when it was OSX 10.6.8, but not today (OSX 10.9.4). The drives still work fine on other OSX 10.6.8, Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 computers (this is appears to be a problem with the Maverick 10.9.4 operating system itself, rather than the flash drives which work flawlessly with every other computer I've tried). I want to remove data from the computer to create backups on the USB drives (no, I don't want to create an online backup or buy a new set of USB drives).
diskutil can see the drives, but cannot verify or repair them as they lack a GUID (GPT) partition scheme. I'm assuming this is the root of the problem. Manually mounting the drives does not work. Installing the ntfs-3g driver also did not work (I was using this to write to the NTFS drives until we upgraded OS's). Installing the WD Passport drivers for OSX also did not work. How do I get the mac to mount these drives?
I could reformat one USB drive and then copy to the others, but this would be extremely inconvenient and take days of copying files back and forth (and would prefer to fix the mac rather than go through this with every NTFS drive I own). If I did this, the FAT32 hard drive format would not be suitable, as format is unable to handle the extremely large sequencing datasets I need to transfer. I'm not super familiar with hard drive formats, but in the event we cannot get Maverick to actually work could someone possibly suggest a format able to handle large file sizes (the largest file I need to move is ~60GB) and be compatible with Windows 8.1 / OSX 10.9.4 / Ubuntu 14.04 as well?
Another workaround I thought of would be just to install an Ubuntu partition on the mac and get the files off through the Linux install. Which is also inconvenient, but would probably be faster than trying to reformat the drives and copy everything over onto them again given the amount of data I want to transfer.
Unrelated, but is there any way to view files and folders in the OSX root directory besides through Terminal? It seems like this functionality was also removed when we "upgraded" from Snow Leopard. (At this point, if it were up to me I would wipe all of the macs we own and replace them with Ubuntu... even the most minor of tasks always require some sort of workaround with them... at my wits end here ).

Yeah this definitely appears to be a problem specifically with this mac. It's been having all sorts of weird problems lately, and we figured that upgrading to Maverick might fix them (but instead we got new problems).
To give an update on this, I ended up reformatting one of the drives to HFS+ and disabled journaling. It now recognizes the drive again, and I'm pulling the files off that way. I looked at exFAT, but it looks like HFS+ has much better Linux support (Windows is read-only but that's only a minor annoyance, as the algorithms to process the data only run on UNIX machines anyways). It's a shame I couldn't keep using NTFS (had to copy over literally EVERYTHING again...) but whatever. Again, no solution for the issue (where this mac can't read NTFS drives).
@rkaufmann87 - To give a bit more explanation, we recently had to disable online backups because apparently the sheer amount of data causes Time Machine to freeze the computer and fail every time it has a scheduled backup (original issue we thought that upgrading to Maverick would solve... didn't work). The hard drive has been having a lot of issues when it begins to reach max capacity as well. So I am pulling off all of my files to external hard drives and deleting the local copy before we attempt to back up online again. And the data would probably take me a year and a lot of money to recreate (for the curious, it's high throughput sequencing data). I'm choosing not to take any chances as a result.

Cannot mount external drive on network when no user logged in

We have a few workstations on our network that have multiple accounts for users in order to preserve preferences, etc. An external hard drive attached to the each workstation, holds work done on that station by the different users. When all users are logged out, the external drive does not appear as a mountable device when trying to log into the workstation from another computer; only the internal drives are seen and mountable.
Is there a way to make the external drive visible and available for mounting over the network when no user is logged in? The external drive is set to ignore permissions for that drive in the get info window.
Additionally, when a user is logged in to the workstation and someone tries to log in over the network to access the external drive, the drive is sometimes available over the network and other times not. What causes this inconsistency?

You really want to format it HFS+ wiyh GUID Partition scheme to ensure your data transfers correctly...

(On IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Not sure if that'll make it see it or not, but your data will be better. Besides, you should be able to install to that then & maybe boot from it to ease matters.
