Yosemite causes font problem in Chrome

Does ANYBODY know how to get fonts to display correctly in Chrome since the update to Yosemite? I so regret doing the update because all my Helvetica displays as an A inside a square. I have searched in all friggin forums about this and nobody has a solution that works. Please holler if you are a superstar and have a solution.

Would you work around this by keeping on doing the sudo every time you restart the computer
No, as you're then just patching a recurring issue every day. Something is causing the problem.
When clearing the caches initially works and then comes back, it's probably either corrupt fonts, or third party fonts you've installed that conflict with some of the newly installed system fonts.
Since you just recently installed Yosemite, it's a pretty good bet the OS X supplied fonts are not the issue. That leaves third party fonts you've installed. Create a new folder on the desktop. With Finder showing as the active app at the upper left next to the Apple logo, hold the Option key and choose Go > Library from the menu bar. This open the Library folder in your user account. Open the Fonts folder. If there are any fonts in that folder, move all of them to the new folder you created on the desktop.
Next, launch Font Book. With FB in the foreground, choose the option on the menu bar to Restore Standard Fonts. This will move any third party fonts in the root /Library/Fonts/ folder to a new folder right next to it named Fonts (Removed). The only ones remaining will be those installed by OS X. It will also perform this move to the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder. All that will be left as active fonts in the three main Library folders after that (system, root library, user account) will be those installed by Yosemite.
Font Book is not a happy camper when fonts are manually removed. It will almost always corrupt its database. So the last steps are to clear Font Book's database, and once again, clear all font cache files from the system.
1. Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point. Yosemite is a bit different. Whether it's a Safe Mode boot or a normal one, you get the same progress bar. It just takes longer to get to the desktop in Safe Mode. So hold the Shift key until you get to the desktop.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
2. Since the system font cache files are not cleared by a Safe Mode startup, repeat the steps you performed above:
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current logged in user account. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
That should stop any issues with fonts being displayed incorrectly in all apps. After that, you need to determine which of the third party fonts you have are causing the problem. Use either the Fonts folder in your user account, or create a new folder in the root /Library/Fonts/ folder. You could just name it "test". Drop about 10 fonts into your new folder, or the initially empty user account Fonts folder, at a time. Use the system for a while and see if the problem returns. Keep adding fonts a handful at a time. When the problem reappears, you'll know at least one of the fonts you just reactivated is bad. Pull those back out and once again follow the two steps above. Keep whittling down your third party fonts by means of elimination until you've clearly identified the culprit(s) and delete those fonts.

  • T61 nvidia driver causes font problems

after my last update a new graphics driver for the nvidia quadro 140m was installed.
the new version (7618) caused bad problems with my fonts. (they could not been displayed)
-> only squares for each letter
it took me a have day to find out, that it was the graphic driver (i didn't expected that).
After I reinstalled my fontexplorer and repared my windows installation several times,
it took me another half day to find the download to the old driver again. (7471)
    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7kd165ww.exe
now it works again with the old driver and i hope there will be an update and at least a notice in the thinkpad system update.
    frustrated greets.

    Hi Puschl636,
I had a similar problem. I have 3.03a of the presentation director and the most current display driver.
If I boot with dual screens, the first time I do it, I have to open the lid to the laptop and then close it after startup and it will usually move to the dual screen profile.
It may be a temp fix, but after that, as long as I have it docked, the dual screens come up.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can PS CS6 cause font problems in In-Design CS4?

When I was running just Adobe Creative Suite 4 I didn't have any problems with the In-Design program. After loading Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6, when trying to print in In-Design CS4, I just get the spinning beach ball!
I suspect a font problem induced by CS6, but could be off base on this one. I'm running a 2010 Mac Pro. If it's a font problem, whats the best way to attack! Any suggestion will be helpful. Thanks

  • Font problem when converting to pdf

I have been struggling with this for a long time! When I export to pdf for some reason the fonts become really mangled. I use several fonts but it is especially baskerville 12 that looks really bad. I have searched and searched but can't figure out why it comes out like that?
If anyone can be of help it will be much appreciated!

I have the same issue. From what I found online it originated sometime during this update (http://indesignsecrets.com/mac-os-x-10-6-7-update-causes-font-problems—but-proba bly-not-in-indesign.php)? I am running OSX Lion but it seems the issue was inherited...
My situation is using Pages with Baskerville font. It appears wonky in Adobe Reader but as expected in Preview.
Found a temporary fix at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4320355#4319047 . It would be nice for this to be included in an upcoming patch.

    Hi doctor.saddam,
If your MacBook Pro is shutting down unexpectedly, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

ya looking at your picture I do see the diff. but I do not have that pixelation in my firefox.
.Xresources has nothing to do with gtk
I do want to let sites choose their own fonts though.
When I look closely on my screenshot I wonder if it's even the same font though (the "3" looks very different).
Perhaps that's where the problem lies.
If I force firefox to use Arial, it looks good. If I set it to Helvetica which seems to be the font used, it looks like in the screenshot - pixelated.
    $ fc-match helvetica

Seems it doesn't use truetype (helvetica.ttf?) as default font for helvetica - shouldn't it?

  • Typekit Web font problem - only in PC browers

Hi. We have developed a site in Muse using a particular font from Typekit. The font in question is 'Quicksand'.
When we publish the site onto BC for viewing, on a Mac (Safari & Chrome browsers) the font shows fine, and on iPhone/iPad too. When we view it on a PC (IE8, Chrome, Firefox) it is either very feint (Chrome) or almost totally illegible and distorted (IE8 & Firefox).
We changed the font to another from Typekit on one particular page and the problem was solved.
Not fancying changing all the text, menus etc etc on the whole site, any ideas what could cause one particular font to not work like this?
    Many thanks
    Nathan

I'm having the same Muse Web Font problem. Web Fonts are beautiful in Design Mode but when in Preview Mode they're a mess. When I publish they render like in Preview Mode, a mess. They display incorrectly when viewing on a PC from any browser I've tried: IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera. They look great on my iPhone but I don't have another Mac OS device from which to view. This happens with ALL Web Fonts.
Please see samples: 1) Muse Design Mode. 2) Muse Preview Mode. 3) Firefox PC. 4) iPhone.
The text displayed in images 1 and 4 is crisp but in images 2 and 3 is pixelated and misshapen. Can someone explain what's causing this and offer a solution?
    Thanks,

  • Glitches in address fill-ins with nicknames; default font problem; plus other glitches in Thunderbird 31.3.0 and 31.4.0; can I roll back to an earlier version?

I am unhappy with the recent upgrade to Thunderbird 31.3.0 and now 31.4.0. My bottom line question is whether I can roll back to the previous version, which was working well for me.
The problems I have encountered include:
    1. I used to be able to enter a single letter in many cases in the address field, and the autocomplete would fill in the entry that I always use with that single letter. That function has been lost, as has auto fill-in based on the nicknames I have entered in my Address Book. I see there is another thread on this problem (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1036962), but no satisfactory answer so far. Entering a single letter now pulls up completely unrelated address entries that may not even have that letter as part of the name, address or nickname for that unrelated address. I have created new nicknames to try to adapt to this problem, but even these new nicknames no longer work with the 31.4.0 upgrade yesterday, forcing me to create yet more complex and hard-to-remember nicknames to pull up my frequent addressees. This is all very frustrating to me, as I depend on speed and ease when creating messages.
    2. Also, I used to be able to enter a single letter in the address field and then use the mouse to click on the "To:" symbol to the left of the next address line to change the next entry to "Cc:"; doing so would then cause the complete address to fill in in the "To:" address field, and make the next field ready for an entry. That no longer works. If I use that technique, the shortcut that I entered in the first field gets included along with the address (if I'm lucky enough to have the address itself selected now, given the problems I've mentioned above). I now have to press "Enter" in order to get the address in the first field to "take" correctly, and then have to click on the "To:" symbol for the next line as a separate action. Just another inconvenience with the new version.
    3. While still on the subject of addresses, personally I see no reason why the address and subject fields should now be colored blue by default rather than appearing as blank, white fields. I far prefer the old look. And I suspect that changing from the blue color to a nice, clean, white field takes time and computer resources that slow things down.
    4. The default font (Times in my case) no longer "takes" when replying to or forwarding messages. I've checked Tools/Options/Composition, and Times is still shown as my default font. However, when I start to type (in a reply with the original message quoted or in a forwarded message), the result is "Variable Width". In order to get Times, I need to highlight the block of text after typing, including the lead-in to the quoted message or the header of the forwarded message, and select "Times" when "(mixed)" shows up. This is a big pain; I often forget to do so and end up having to edit the Unsent Message (which I check before sending) as New and correct the font.
    5. A minor problem: I rely on the reminder to attach a message which shows up when an "attachment-related" word is entered in the body of the message. It has been a wonderful feature of Thunderbird that has prevented me on many occasions from sending off messages without the attachments. However, in the new versions, even if I have indeed added the attachment, a pop-up comes up on sending the message saying there has been no attachment and asking if I want to add one. It's easy enough to just click "No", but it's yet one more unnecessary and distracting step that this new version is requiring of the user.
I'm really sad to see these various changes/glitches. I love Thunderbird and it bothers me deeply to find myself mired in so many new problems that slow down my work. I would be grateful for any suggestions and advice, and, particularly, for any information as whether I can roll back to the version prior to 31.3.0 that was working well for me.

Thank you, Zenos. I tried rolling back to v31.2.0, since I had not encountered problems prior to December. However, that didn't help. So I followed your valuable suggestion to revert to v24.6; that seems to have done the trick.
I would like to mark this problem as "Solved" -- the rollback seems to have worked. However, since my original post was a complex mix of things, before I do that, should I post the individual problem sets that I had noted (address fields/nicknames problems -- numbers 1-3; default font problem -- number 4; attachment reminder problem -- number 5) as separate issues which have not been solved?
Do you know if these various issues are being worked on? I'm glad to have the temporary fix of rolling back to an earlier version, but I'd like to get back on the current update schedule at some point if and when these problems have been corrected.
    Thank you again!

  • Dual Monitor Causing System Problems?

Hi, I'm new to this site, so I hope this is where I ask this question! My design group switched to G5/Cinema Display screen from old g4 setups mid 2005. I retained my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2020u monitor to use as a secondary display for pallettes, extra files, etc. It's hooked up using a dvi-vga adapter.
My new G5 had hiccups from the start, but around March 2006 I started getting Kernel Panics almost every week, serious slow-downs, Adobe app crashes, etc. It got to the point that I was troubleshooting every week, but could never put a finger on exactly what was happening. IT archive-installed 10.4.4 after we discovered the system had been updated to 10.4.6 and we thought that would solve the problem. While that solved the issues that were relevant to 10.4.6 glitches, it didn't fix everything and little, persistent problems remained, including stalls, crashes and kernel panics. After removing suspect fonts, wallpaper, icons, updating software, repairing permissions, tossing preferences, and other troubleshooting over and over, we (I.T.) finally switched my cpu to another one in the department using data migration (just my user information, not software or other files). Still the same hiccups and even new glitches appeared (InDesign crashing on spellcheck, Photoshop not granting me access to save changes to files, etc.), including two more Kernel panics (within 5 minutes of each other) in the two weeks since we switched hardware. More troubleshooting fixed the app-specific problems, but there are still the persistent annoyances occurring.
I again did all the troubleshooting mentioned above and finally someone mentioned that I'm the only designer in our group using a dual display set-up. Could there be validity to the non-cinema display monitor causing these problems and if so, what is the solution? I've disconnected the second monitor for now, but would love to have it back. Also, we work with a server (for instance, the kernel panics only happen when I try to place a file from the server into InDesign CS2 using the place command, so there's another avenue to go down if the monitor isn't the issue.)Thanks!

I only just disconnected the monitor, so it will take time to tell if that's a factor. As for the kernel panics, although it's always the same scenario (placing images from server through InDesign) they happen very randomly; it's not happening every single time I place a file. In fact, I just placed an image on the server into an ID doc I have on my desktop, no problem. So I can't say for sure that it has happened when working from my desktop or only when working on the server.

  • Font problem with MX under Snow Leopard

Anybody know what might cause an app built with Director MX not to display an installed (not embedded) custom font under Snow Leopard?
The program was built quite some time ago but was tested under previous Mac OS X.x versions and worked fine. What might have changed that could cause this problem?
Complicating this is that I don't have Snow Leopard myself to test it directly, but here's what I do know:
The font is definitely installed and available to other apps.
Everything else about the app works fine.

I noticed the same jumbled text problem.
When I went to look at Font Book, I see that those fonts are no longer installed. It must've happened when I loaded Snow Leopard last weekend.
Anyway, I went to reinstall fonts, and I see I've got a bunch that got uninstalled. But when I try to reinstall them, like Calisto and Caligula to name the first couple I tried, Font Book reports that there were serious errors when trying to load them.
Does anyone have insights into the vague message: "System Validation" as the serious problem? I don't see a way to get more details about the problem than that.

  • InDesign CS6 crashing when exporting as a PDF (not font problem)

I have attempted exporting my PDF with all different kinds of settings. It's only an 8 page document. It has about 15 low res jpgs in it. I used a stock Adobe font. There are a several hyperlinks in the file but, mostly it is just text. I have no idea how to fix this. And naturally, I need it for work tomorrow. I do get one error message saying that there is overlaying text on 3 of 8 pages, but I really don't think that is something that would cause this problem. Any ideas??? Thanks!

I thought that's what that link was for...the crash report I posted to pastebin. I have never used that site before. Sorry.
Alas, I was able to get it work...after 5-6 hours of working on it. I ended up saving it as an IDML (again, the first time didn't work). It replaced all the images with gray squares, but at least I had the content. The images were the least of my worries. I recreated the entire doc (borrowed every page but page 4) to get away from whatever that was about and just redid the layout for page 4. It exported perfectly as a PDF and is now on the boss lady's desk, just in time.
Thank you all for all of your help!

  • Font problem when downsizing file in Adobe Acrobat pro 9

We currently use Quark on our pcs and sometimes when we need to downsize the hi res print ready
pdf to low res. We do this in acrobat but what tends to happen is that the fonts either shift or
go across the page. Can anyone help with this? there are two of us running 9 while the rest of the crew are operating 4,
although I do not think that this is the problem. Can external ads cause a problem?
    thanks
    Nita

    External ads?
Open the original external ads and check for font embedding. If the fonts are not embedded (or subset), than Acrobat has no font data for the spacing and such.
I have to ask however...when you create a "hi res print ready" pdf from Quark...with a placed pdf without fonts embedded (or subset) does Quark not realize or warn you that the fonts are not available?!?

  • Problems with Chrome and Safari

About one week ago, I started having some issues with my mid-2012 MBP. After troubleshooting various items, I both reinstalled OSX and then erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. As far as I can tell, most of the minor issues were taken care of.
    Two issues persist.
    1. The thumbnail photos that accompany status updates in my Facebook News Feed are not showing up. It's either blank, or a broken photo symbol. This is happening intermittently in both Chrome and Safari. I should add, since the latest install of OSX, Chrome and Adobe Flash have been the only things I have downloaded. And the issue remained in Safari after the fresh install and before downloading Chrome, so I know this issue isn't Chrome related. (It also happens with the Test user profile I have in which there are no other programs.)
    2. Along with (1), both Chrome and Safari have been partially or fully freezing. Again, this is intermittently. When the browsers freeze up, the Activity Monitor shows both Chrome and Safari as using over 100% of the CPU. It does not resolve itself in Chrome and requries a force quit. Safari has been resolving itself.
Like I said, I have already erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. I have also ran the Hardware Test and it found nothing; and my S.M.A.R.T. status is Verified. I have also reset the PRAM and resent the SMC.
Additionally, the newly downloaded Chrome is running as it is when downloaded from the site. That is, no extra plug-ins or extensions.
Anyone have any ideas about what the issues could be?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Does anybody know how to solve this font problem?

    Hello everyone,
I have had this font problem for weeks now and I can't seem to get it solved. There are a number of fonts that won't load properly in Illustrator, PS, and InDesign. They are loaded in the system, but refuse to show up in the list. I've installed them in the home directory/library/fonts. These are commercial opentype fonts and one homemade opentype font. Sometimes the font that I created will appear, other times it does not, but many other fonts refuse to show up in the font display lists of these 3 software packages.
I've cleared the font caches with FontNuke, everything looks like it should work properly, but it does not. Also, with Font Book, I've resolved any duplicate font problems. Does anybody know how to solve this problem? Is this a known CS4 bug?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using the latest Mac Mini and CS4 software.
    Thanks in advance.
    CB

    Hi,
How do I check if the fonts have the correct creator and so on?
Anyway, I've spent the better part of today validating and removing suspect
fonts. Why does the right click choice for resolve duplicates and the
validate font behave completely differently in Font Book? I discovered that
when this is investigated further with the validate font command, I found I
had a massive amount of duplicates that according to font book cause minor
errors. I thought that would have been sorted out with the resolve duplicate
command, instead I ended up check marking and manually removing the fonts
    that had minor errors.
I still have many commercial fonts plus my own font not showing up in
Illustrator or PhotoShop. If I copy and paste the font directly into
InDesign's font folder, my font shows up. I also tried removing my font to
see if this would fix any of the other problems. It doesn't. I did type in
my font name in the console dialog box and this message is displayed for
this font as well as mine and many others.
10-04-06 5:21:09 PM Font Book[12940] ##### ERROR:  The font system thinks
    the font
    file://localhost/Library/Fonts/Voluta%20Script%20Pro/VolutaScriptPro-Regular.otf
is active, but the file no longer exists!
Then I went back to font book to check to see if it is there and it is
enabled. For my font the caution triangle appears with the multiple copies
of the font is installed. Resolving duplicates doesn't solve this problem.
Any ideas of how to fix this problem?
    Thanks
