Yosemite causing my computer to crash randomly

I've had Yosemite for around 2 weeks now.  At first I wasn't experiencing any problems with the new operating system.  Problems first arose when I had a few USB devices attached to my computer.  Then about a week ago my computer (Macbook Pro Retina 15") screen randomly went black however I noticed it was still outputting power to my USB devices.  I tried waking it from what I assumed to be sleep but it wouldn't wake up.  I tried to restart but it wouldn't let me until I closed the screen and lifted it back up again.  Over the past week I've been using third party applications such as Audacity and Vectorworks and it seemed like using these applications would cause the computer to crash.  Two day's ago I experienced one of these crashes and when starting it back up again the computer would crash on the initial loading screen (Apple logo and loading bar screen).  After spending 30 minutes trying to get my computer up and running again for a meeting I simply gave up.  Yesterday however I was watching a movie on iTunes and my computer again went dark on me leading me to wonder if it has nothing to do with the applications I'm using but that something is causing my computer to crash after a few minutes of use (15-20 minutes).  Anyone have any solutions?
Whenever I restart my computer my computer recognizes that there was a problem because it displays the window "Your computer was shut down due to a problem would you like to reopen applications" (Paraphrasing).  And occasionally I'll get a prompt asking if I want to send a diagnostic report to apple which I've been doing.

  • My iPods are Causing My Computer to Crash!

Lately all of my iPods are starting to cause my computer to crash when I plug them in. It doesn't do it every time. But when it starts, I can't fix it. I have restarted my computer, reset all of my iPods, and tried different USB ports and the problem still persists. Right after I plug the iPods in, a blue screen flashes for a second and then the computer restarts. Any ideas on how to fix this problem. It is frustrating! Help

if you have an HP printer try disconnecting it

  • Firefox is either constantly crashing or it won't start after it caused my computer to crash

Firefox has caused my computer to crash and after starting back up when I tried to open Firefox it just gave me multiple crash reports then it wouldn't even give me that after awhile.

    Hi dwennon,
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately it is hard to give support steps without an crash reports. However since Firefox is not starting I would recommend trying to start it in Safe Mode:
*[[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
You can also try to start Firefox with a new profile from the cmd.exe:
    # Open a cmd.exe or put cmd.exe in the Start menu
    # Paste this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
#Hit enter and when you see the manager pop up, click create new profile. Enter the name and open Firefox
If then it continues to crash please submit the crash report ids: Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!
You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the [[Firefox crashes]] article.
Looking forward to hearing from you :-)

  • Importing Video to iMovie 11 Causes Entire Computer to Crash

Hi. I must say up front that I am not very Mac saavy, so I apologize in advance.
I am trying to import video from a Canon Vixia HFS200 camera in to my iMovie 11 on my iMac. I'm running OS X version 10.6.8. The other details are in the error report that I've pasted below. When I turn on the video camera, I select sync then select "Computer/Printer" for USB connection type. It will then open my iPhoto and upload photos, and then it will open my iMovie (if not already open). It can transfer to iPhoto just fine. However, when it opens the transfer window in iMovie, it stalls with an empty transfer screen and then I get the gray box of death telling me that my computer has crashed and I must re-start it.
I would appreciate any advice on this issue. Thanks!

According to the link below I got from the Canon Canada website, apparently there is mentioned software to retreive images and videos from your camera.
    http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300004027/01/IB66_EN.pdf
Anyhow, since you had it working before with iMovie 11, I am suspecting that it somehow got corrupted when the mounted volume (your camera) somehow got disconnected due to inadequate battery power.  Which was why Canon recommended people use an AC adapter for this or a fresh battery before a major transfer of movie clips.  When mounted volumes disconnect abruptly for whatever reasons, iMovie 11 goes into beserk mode trying to restore that connection resulting in crashes or slowdowns.
To restore iMovie 11 back to where it was.
You need to delete iMovie's plist and cache files, 2 files located in your Home/Libary folder
    com.apple.iMovieapp.plist (document)
    com.apple.iMovieapp        (folder)
After this, you can either do 2 things.  One is run disk repair utility and execute repair permissions on the drive that iMovie resides (probably your main boot drive) or download a free utility called OnyX which is a free OSX maintenance software to do that plus some extras including clearing caches, which sometimes are the causes of system crashes.
It is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php and it will help repair permissions and clear caches.  Please download the appropriate version for your OSX (Snow Leopard).
Once that is done, reboot your computer and run iMovie 11.  Connect the cable to the camera and computer and do your import.  Make sure you have a fresh charged battery on your Canon.  This should work.
Regarding Apple Care.  The easiest way to deal with this is deal your issues with a Genius at the Apple Store.  They will help you with the registeration of Apple Care.  Just because you bought Apple Care does not necessarily mean you are registered and you should register it as soon as you got the system and Apple Care together.
Apple is a good system, but in the quest of making the system super friendly, it can sometimes be daunting to get it working again because unlike the PC, the interface itself makes it challenging to do low level stuff.

  • I recently downloaded CC into my iMac. The Bridge sort feature causes my computer to crash.

I use the sort feature in Bridge to sort my images by file type and date created. The sort feature causes my iMac to crash and of course does not sort. The CC is a recent download, and my iMac is new and updated.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
If you have any other peripherals, disconnect them all. Reconnect one at a time to be sure it's really the external disk, and only the external disk.
Run the Apple Hardware Test, from the separate disc that came with your Mac.

  • Premiere Pro freezes and causes my computer to crash by re-writing the permissions inside my computer

Premiere Pro re-writes my permissions inside my computer and causes premiere to crash, run slow, restarts my computer in the middle of rendering, and freezes my whole computer.  I have a brand new 2013 Mac Pro with 12core, 16 GB of ram, and 6GB of GPUs.  I will even try and and edit very small HD files from a DSLR whether they are H264 or Pro Res files.  I will do something simple like a distortion correction on those files that are a minute long and it takes it 40 plus minutes to render if it makes it through without crashing the program or the computer.  If I run it for a while without restoring the permissions in the disk utility it makes my whole computer freeze and crash from just about every program.  I have spent many hours on the phone with apple re-installing my operating system thinking that hardware was my issue.  After doing so and installing programs like avid and final cut with Adobe products off the computer it worked perfectly.  Then when I install Adobe products like Premiere Pro on the very first render they will start to have the issues I have explained above.  I have contacted Adobe support and have spent like 20 hours over the last few weeks with them remote logging onto my computer trying to fix the issue.  Towards the end of the last call the guy I was talking too wanted to collect all the information he could to ask the engineers about my problem. He asked me over a dozen times if I had re-installed my operating system and I responded with yes I have each time.  He then changed his tune to the only way he will continue to help me is if I will again re-install my operating system and only put Premiere Pro on the computer just to see if that will work.  I have crazy deadlines and do not have time to go through that process again and again.  He also told me that lots of people with my same computer have the same issues but still wants me to re-install my operating system again.  I explained to him that I am extremely behind with my work (because of this issue) and do not have the time to re-install again since the first re-install didn't work.  I had told him multiple times that I can get around using Adobe products but am huge fan of them(when they work) and would like to find a way to solve the problem.  He then told me that I should go ahead and cancel my subscription and and use that work around since he can not figure it out.  Is there anybody at Adobe that cares about losing my business?  Or anybody out there that may help with the solution of my problem?
    Thanks,
    Cody

WOW!!!! Adobe only cares about there reputation and not their customers!
Response:  I said multiple times in the last thread that I already did a clean install of my operating system.
Response:  I use DaVinci 10 times more than Premiere Pro and never have had one issue with it ever!  Must not be the issue?!?
Response: Changing the read and write permissions was the first thing the guy tried two weeks ago.  I have done a clean install of Mavericks and it did not solve my problem(as I said in my first post).
(Please do not create new posts in response to an earlier post. That post was deleted).
    Hi Cody,
Really sorry you're so upset. I'm only trying to help, though. I suggested that the number one fix is to make sure that your permissions are set to read/write. You did not mention that agents tried this at all in your original response so that's why I mentioned it. Also, I was not completely clear that a clean installation was done as most people install the original OS and then update it, which can cause the issue. Sorry for the confusion.
You did say that you use Resolve all the time with no issues. Resolve can mistakenly install CUDA on your machine which has AMD GPUs. This can cause serious issues. I would remove CUDA from your machine and see if you get better results: Avoid installing NVIDIA CUDA drivers on computers with AMD GPUs
If you want further help, please let me know and I'll do what I can do to assist.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • PE9 Burn failure at 95% causes entire computer to crash

Hi - I hope someone can help.
I am puttig together clips from mobile phones and various other devices of the first year of a babies life, it includes audio tracks on the soundtrack line as well as the audio and video on track 1. I have also included a pan&zoom slideshow of images and the total length is approx 1hr20mins.
I am not sure what the problem is, but after the disc menus (there are 4) have all encoded, the programme gets to 95% and then crashes, but it doesn't just crash the programme, it actually crashes my whole system whereby I can't use my mouse, or the keyboard to close anything.
Last week the system was working perfectly, and I have tried saving the whole movie as an mpeg to my computer which has worked perfectly, but there is something preventing the burn to finish.
I am using a Dell XPS 17 with intel i5 core processor, to hard drives (C and D) with 1TB RAM total. I use an Nvidia graphics card and have RealTek HD audio. (not sure if you need all that or if it's even the right stuff to tell you!)
    Please help!!

You've probably got a number of issues going on that are overloading the program. It's also possible you don't have enough clean, freshly defragmented space on your C and D drives. Even if these drives are huge, fragmentation to keep Premiere Elements from grabbing the contiguous space it needs. You are working a) an unusually huge video for a DVD (DVDs can only hold about 70 minutes of video), b) you may be using unnecessary large photos (see below) which can choke the program and c) you don't say where your video is coming from, but Premiere Elements needs to work much harder on video that's not miniDV, HDV or AVCHD -- and these elements are all combining into a program meltdown.
First, when you set up your Premiere Elements project, which project settings did you select? Have you ensured that this setting matches precisely your video footage? If it does, you should see no red lines above the clips on your timeline before add effects to them. Is this the case in your project?
Second, have you ensured that your photos are not larger than 1000x750 pixels in size? Using photos directly from a camera (some of which can be many times video resolution) are the chief cause of program choke.
Have you rendered your timeline (press Enter) whenever you see red lines above your clips on the timeline? When your timeline is rendered (the red lines turn green) your program will perform more efficiently and you'll have less issues with transcoding your DVD. However even this does not overcome the issues listed above.

  • Latest update causes my computer to crash

i was using my computer the other day and it just shut itself off, when i ran a startup repair to uninstall recently installed files that may be causing the problem, i found the problem had stopped but itunes wouldnt open. itunes claimed that it had missing files and i should reinstall itunes. after going online and reinstalling itunes again it worked, but soon after the drama repeated itself. my computer crashed.
has anyone else experienced this problem? and more importantly how do i fix it so i can enjoy itunes without having to reinstall it everytime?

  • Is Snow Leopard causing my computer to crash, or is it another app?

Every time I open a program (ProTools by Digidesign) my computer crashes. I am curious what is causing the crash based on the crash report.
Based on the report below, do I need to reinstall snow leopard or protools or is it something else?
    Here is the report.

  • AGP aperture size cause my computer to crash?!

Ok. When my AGP aperture size is set to anything past its lowest value (4mb), my computer crashes. I haven't noticed any huge performance differences when running at 4mb aperture size, as opposed to 64mb or 128mb, but i'm curious as to what anyone here might think the cause of this is? Would it most likely be my oporating system, my motherboard, my video card, my RAM, etc...?
    System Specs:
    Windows 98SE
    MSI KT4V Motherboard
Radeon 9700 Pro (Made by ATI.)
512mb DDR RAM (Not sure what brand.)
    Two 60gb Maxtor Hard-drives
    400+ Watt Power Supply

I've been banging my head for two days now trying to figure out why my KT4V would not boot after setting initial bios.
I changed my AGP aperture size to 4mb and now I am up and running.

  • Can a wire disconnected from the CRT display cause the computer to crash?

    Hello all,
My computer keeps on freezing up and also having kernal panics when I am using it. I have tried everything to fix the problem but nothing worked. Today, I shined a flashlight through the cover of the computer and found a wire that is disconnected from the CRT display. While I am using my computer, the display is working fine. No discoloration or anything. Can someone please let me know (if you know) that a wire disconnected from the CRT display is causing my problem?
Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

    Hello,
It's really hard saying what you are looking at. Here's my thoughts:
Has the computer ever been serviced / dismantled?
If not, the wire may have always been like that from the factory.
Without seeing it, it's hard saying for sure.
It could be a "Tie" or something similar that just there to hold things in-place (like a zip-tie). It's not unusual to find actual wire used as a tie.
It could be a wire that was only used in specific configurations. Perhaps your system doesn't have the option that needed that connection. They may have used a standard wire-loom, and only used wires they needed.
It could be your AirPort antenna (used or not). I can't say since I cannot see it myself.
There's just any number of things it could be.
But, if the machine has been working, and not been opened, then that wire has probably been like that for a long time.
The only reason I could see for a wire to be loose now if it wasn't previously, would be if it had stress on it, and the solder connection just let go / broke.
Can you describe what it looks like in more detail? That might help someone identify it.
How does it run through the system? Can you tell what color it is? Is is coated or bare wire? Does it run along with the other wires? Does it look like it was attached previously? Is there a bare end on the wire? Does if have a connector? Etc.
Perhaps with some additional detail, we might be able to better advise you.
    I hope this helps.

  • The last sync caused my computer to crash?

when I synced my iphone 3GS with my Windows PC, I was able to download the pictures from my phone, but then, my computer had a virus. I was able to safely remove the virus using AVG, and then my computer was fine, but now I'm wondering if it was possible that my iPhone 3GS had gotten a virus... anyone ever heard of this?

That forget button should only have effect if you click it and click the Red Forget button in the drop down.
You may have had other profile issues if the freezes started to happen after you used this button once or more times or you may have made more changes that caused this issue.

  • Shockwave Flash Player Is Causing My Computer To Crash

I've been getting a message saying that my Shockwave Flash
Player has caused a problem which requires Internet Explorer to
close. How can I fix this?

I'm having a similar problem with Firefox. Every time I open
up a browser and go to a page which requires Flash, I recieve a
message that says that it has encountered a problem. It doesn't
crash out directly, but will usually do so within 10-15
minutes....a freeze-up of Firefox occurs and I have to Ctrl-Atl-Del
out. The rest of my system is tip-top, and it's only occurred since
    the upgrade of my Flash.

  • Whenever I plug my iPod in, it causes my computer to crash!

Can anyway help me? I have an 80GB Classic
    Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recently, a young lad (Tim) I know has an IPOD classic, he too has also been driven almost mad with the windows XP crashing after a few seconds with plugging into the USB port. All other USB devices and USB ports are working fine with other devices.
Here is the story for your info.
He has been advised by other PC engineers to do almost everything to his PC, reinstall USB drivers, remove software, clean out registry etc, including a fresh install of Windows XP. All very time consuming and annoying if the IPOD still crashs windows XP.
Tim sought my help with this. I was going to suggest try using a powered USB hub. My thinking here is the IPOD draws power from the USB port, and maybe the motherboard can't quite supply enough power. What made me suspect the PC was the fact that I asked Tim to try connecting the IPOD to his fathers Laptop and that was OK.
In the meantime while I was searching forums like this one, Tim asked if I could find a new Power Supply for his PC as the existing PSU fan makes quite a noise as is normal with smaller high speed fans. Here in the UK, MAPLIN electronics do replacement PSU's and I decided an uprated (480 Watt) with an ultra quite fan would be better that his existing 300W PSU. This arrived by mail and was fitted and checked PC working OK.
Having had some incredibly obscure and/or intermittent faults (many faults which seem to be software related) due to fauly PC PSU's (even if all the voltages measure OK in circuit) during my history of PC maintainance, I suggested to try connecting the IPOD to the USB port having now replaced the PSU.
The IPOD now worked with the PC, no more Windows crashes. Probelm solved by replacing the PSU.
Now of course, the PSU may not be your problem, and I would not want you to go and buy a new PSU only for you to discover this was not the cure. (£29.99 from MAPLIN electronics)
Can I suggest you try these:-
    (1) Connect IPOD to another modern laptop or PC, preferbaly one that is known to work with an IPOD.
    (2) Borrow a USB 2.0 hub (must be exteranlly powered) and connect IPOD to the hub.
    (3) Consider buying a NEW PSU (not a recycled unit), uprated in Wattage from the one you currenly have.
Please don't blame me for any lost expenses if a NEW PSU does not solve the IPOD crashing the PC for you. I only wrote this to give my recent personal experience on this fault which was solved.
    David.
