Yosemite, deleting backups stored on SSD

About This Mac / Storage -> 65GB worth of backups. How do I find these backups and delete them. I am in need for space to download a program.
Also, I just deleted a program which is 60GB but only 30GB was deleted form my computer. I search the program name and files and nothing came up, is there a place these files are hiding which I can then delete?
Thanks

I think you may be concerned with Time Machine local snapshots.  Please read these two articles:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202301
http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
They will always be deleted if space is required for other data and may safely be ignored.
Ciao.

  • Keep archived logs but deleting backup of db

    Hey
I'm running a backup script every night that issues a "backup database plus archivelog" and saves the backup to disk. Due to disk space limitations I have to delete the obsolete backup taken the night before. However the "delete obsolete" also deletes the archived logs on disk. Is there a way to delete the obsolete backup but still keep the logs on disk?
Tried the "delete backup of database completed before 'sysdate-1' but I cant seem to get passed the promting for deletion - it has to run automatically.
    Thanks for any advice..

Why don't you work with retention and than you delete the obsolete?
delete backup of database will remove the full backup of the database (datafiles, archivelog, spfile). You can create a script to delete the backup of a given list of datafiles.

  • Deleting backups on a device.

When I delete backups from an Ipad on ICloud settings will I lose my movies/shows on other devices that I bought from Itunes on that Ipad (they have the icloud symbol on the corner)? What do I have to do to keep those movies I bought on the ipad before I delete backups from it or are they already safe?

Deleting a backup only deletes the backup.  It won't do anything to the other data on your phone or in your iCloud account.
Also, the movies aren't really stored in your personal iCloud account.  They are stored in the iTunes store.  The cloud symbols are links to your previous purchases in the iTunes store so you can redownload them or play them (if running iOS 7) if desired.

  • Can't delete backups while in Time Machine

So I've been trying to delete some older backups to free up some space on my portable HD while I'm in Time Machine and everytime after I click the wheel button and go down to "delete backup", everything freezes and I have to do a force quit to get back out. I really need to free up some space. Please help me out! I'm running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

If you are dealing with the Time Machine Snapshots on your HDD, please read this:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202301
In essence you may ignore them because they will be automatically deleted if room is required for other data.
    Ciao.

  • I have pictures on my iPad and they are backed up on my icloud, if I delete them off of my iPad, will they be deleted or stored on my icloud

I have pictures on my iPad and they are backed up on my icloud, if I delete them off of my iPad, will they be deleted or stored on my icloud

The only photos backed up up on iCloud is your Camera Roll when you run iCloud Backup and they can't be accessed without restoring your whole devices.
Photo Stream is not a backup. It is a sync tool.
Photo Stream only holds 30 days of photos on the server and 1000 photos on your iOS device.
To keep them safe, all your photos should be transfered to your computer and backed up.
Once they are safely on your computer, then delete them from your iPad.

  • DELETING BACKUP

    Hello.
I am having great difficulty deleting  a backup I no longer require in the iCloud.  Keeps saying it's being used to restore another device but it isn't!  Have tried a number of different methods including my PC and the original phone but no luck.  Can anyone help?!

    Hello Plazmakidz,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can find and delete backups via iTunes Preferences or in a Windows Explorer window. For this case, let's just stick with iTunes. Head to *Edit -> Preferences*. When the window pops up, head over to the Devices tab where you'll find a list of your stored backups. Go ahead and click on any of them (usually there is only one listed) to highlight it and then select the *Delete Backup* button.

  • What happens if I click "delete backup" in order to delete the iCloud backups from my sisters phone off my device. Will it delete everything on her phone?

So a while ago when I got my phone I started a new Apple ID account/ iCloud.. Then when my sister got a new iphone I gave her my id to use too. In settings-general-usage it says that my storage is almost full. I then click on manage storage and it shows my phone and my sisters phone and how many gb or whatever. Also it says "last backup failed" and other stuff that's Irrelevant. Now when I click on my sisters phone I have an option to "delete backup" MY QUESTION is if I click the delete backup button will it just delete the iCloud backup off my phone OR will it totally delete everything involving the backup off my sisters phone forever??? Please help! Thank you so much!!!!!

Deleting a backup deletes the backup only from the iCloud storage, not anything on the iPhone.
The iPhone's iCloud backup will be updated at some point - automatically when the iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network while connected to a power source unless the iCloud backup is turned off on the iPhone.

  • I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be back

I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be backed up. I am supposed to do this before I go to the Apple store today to get my phone fixed. Can someone please help me? I have done almost everything.

This article explains ways to reduce your iCloud storage: Managing your iCloud storage.  In addition to what's mentioned in the article, if you have lots of photos and videos attached to your text messages, these are all included in your iCloud backup and deleting them can sometimes significantly reduce the size of your backup.
If worse comes to worse, back up your phone to your computer rather than iCloud.  To do this, connect it to your computer, open iTunes and go to File>Devices>Back Up and to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  This can be used to restore your data when you get your phone back.  (In fact, it's faster because you don't have to download the data from iCloud.)

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

The iCloud backup includes most things except non-iTunes purchased but the iTunes backup does not include those either. For what iCloud includes see:

  • What would happen if I turn off my backup and delete backup data From my device? Will it delete my music and everything for ever or just stay in the cloud but not on my device?

What would happen if I turn off my backup and delete backup data From my device? Will it delete my music and everything for ever or just stay in the cloud but not on my device?

If you have multiple devices backing up to the Cloud, you will see all of them listed. You would click on each device to change what is backed up from that device. You can then delete your individual back-ups.
Once you have all your settings to your liking, you can then go back to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, and click on Back Up Now (bottom of the screen) to create a fresh backup with your new settings.

  • How to delete backup data in icloud to free up storage space?

My iphone 4s has not been backed up in 3 weeks because it says "there is not enough iCloud storage available". Through viewing the data sizes currently backed up in iCloud, the Camera Roll is taking up 99% of the space. I deleted almost everything from the camera roll and photo stream on the actual iphone device, but what do I need to do in order for the storage space to be freed? Is there another place I need to check to delete data (i.e. photos) and regain the storage space available and resume successful backups?
    Many thanks,
    SM

So by selecting "Delete Backup" it will delete everything backed up to iCloud from other apps as well, correct? Is there anywhere I can go to view the actual data being backed up and specifically delete certain data? Without knowing exactly what has been backed up, I'm hesitant to delete everything.

  • WbAdmin Delete Backup command not supported in 8.1 Pro x64

    Hello
I've searched for how to delete specific backups that I've created using the elevated Power Shell command "wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:E: -include:C: -allCritical -quiet" but I've run into a roadblock.
    The problem is that none
of the "wbadmin delete xxx" commands are actually supported in Win8.1 Pro 64-bit (6.3, Build 9600). If I type "wbadmin delete /?", I get:
    ---- Commands Supported ----
DELETE CATALOG                     -- Deletes the backup catalog.
DELETE SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP  -- Deletes one or more system state backups.
DELETE BACKUP                       -- Deletes one or more backups.
However, when I try to use ANY delete command (for example, to delete a specific backup version that was identified using "Wbadmin get versions"), I get this error:
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> wbadmin delete backup -version:06/26/2014-07:29
    wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Warning:  The DELETE BACKUP command is not supported in this version of Windows.
    The operation ended before completion.
The same thing happens if I use -deleteOldest, with or without the -backupTarget switch.
Does anyone know why the Delete command is not available on 8.1? Is there a patch, workaround or alternate method of deleting specific backup images?

Yolanda, thank you for confirming the issue and for pointing me to a solution. I really appreciate it!
I have looked at the cmdlet reference page tried to use the commands but it appears that they do not work on my system. For example:
    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> remove-wbcatalog
remove-wbcatalog : The term 'remove-wbcatalog' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or
operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try
    again.

    + remove-wbcatalog
    + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        + CategoryInfo          : ObjectNotFound: (remove-wbcatalog:String) [], CommandNotFoundException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException
Also, if I type the help command listed on the reference page, get-help -module windowsserverbackup, the only reponse is a blank command prompt. Do I need to install the windowsserverbackup functionality separately? It does not seem
    to be built-in.
