Yosemite Empty Applications folder NO Launchpad

I have had numerous problems since Yosemite install.
Most of which have either been fixed (by the community... no thanks Apple) or have work arounds.
But this is the most frustrating and still occurring.
I cannot get finder to "see" my applications folder.
This not the "missing icons" adjust the columns error, but only occurs with applications.
Now using terminal I have checked the directory and they are certainly there.
I can run applications if they are pinned to my dock... but launchpad just comes up with a Blue screen with Loading Applications... on it
This is a iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) so perhaps getting to the end of its cycle, but still a very usable computer... or was.
It does have multiple user accounts on it and I have read that this may be an issue, but have seen no fix.
I have reset all permissions.. in multiple ways.
Really looking to the community for an answer please.

The application folder on the hard drive is one that can/could be accessed by multiple user accounts.
All software you install will install in that location by default, so as to be available to all users of the computer. This is not in any way detrimental to performance so no need to worry.
Unless you have a specific need to limit other accounts access to certain programs, I would not ever bother with the user level application folder. New macs do not come with anything installed in this folder. I doubt that its contents were erased, most likely you thought you were viewing the user level application folder when in fact you were looking at the "global" one.
Matt
Well I see it got answered at the same time I was typing this response. So anyhow I am glad you got to the bottom of it.

  • Yosemite: empty Applications folder and Dock crashes after right-click

I upgraded my mid-2010 Macbook Pro to Yosemite, and am observing two problems: 1) my Applications folder is empty, except for the "Windows 7 Applications" subfolder related to Parallels; and 2) if I right-click on a Dock icon, the dock effectively crashes.  When I view the Activity Monitor, Dock is consuming a huge amount of system resources (typically between 100% and 200%) and loginwindow and lsregister aren't far behind (around 60% - 100%). My battery life is awful - I've been using my computer for about 30 minutes and am below 60% after starting with a full charge.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Lawenforcer, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Test if the Finder/Desktop/Dock works right while in Safe Mode, reboot when complete, test again.
If it works in Safe Mode but not a regular bootup, then Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Check the Other row in System Preferences.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Within minutes of reboot, apps won't open from the dock, Applications folder or Launchpad.  Already running apps appear unaffected.  What should I do?

I installed Lion on my late-2009 Mac Mini a few weeks ago.  Within the last week, a strange problem has cropped up.  Just a few minutes after reboot, my Mac Mini stops opening applications.  I can try to open applications from the dock, or the Applications folder, or  Launchpad, and nothing opens.  Applications that have already been opened appear to be unaffected, as long as I don't close them.  If I quit an application, I cannot re-open it.
This does not appear to be related to any updates or changes.  The problem began while my Mac Mini was on 10.7.1, and persisted after an upgrade to 10.7.2.

Hello, how exactly did you move these other files, & what were they?
Open the Applications folder, does iMovie & iPhoto work from there?

  • Empty Applications folder in user account

Since migrating to a new MacBook Pro I've noticed that whilst the Applications 'place' in the Finder sidebar has all my applications in it, the Applications folder under my user account is there, but completely empty. All the other ones are fine e.g. Movies, Desktop, Music have all their contents in both places, it's just Applications that seems to be an issue. Is there a way to correct this? Does it even matter anyway? It's just that on my old MacBook, apps automatically appeared in both places.

  • Empty Applications Folder

I saw that this folder: /Applications, contains all my applications and this folder: Users/<username>/Applications, is empty. Should I keep or delete the empty folder?

I'd leave it. It's for applications which would be available to only that user.  It's harmless if not used.

  • Empty Applications folder in Home Folder

I've searched the discussions and others have this "problem" (a feature or bug?) An empty folder named "Applications" appears in my home folder. I can delete it, but it gets recreated. I know I could (should?) leave it be, and it does no harm, but it bugs me!
Anyone know what application is creating this empty folder? If Mac OS X is doing it, it's only just started happening for me.

    Anthony,
I have a similar problem with a Desktop folder being created. I have made a post here:

  • My applications folder is empty when I open it in finder.

Aside from those in my dock, other applications installed in my computer can only be seen and opened using launch pad. Prior to this happening, I have just recently updated my OSX Mavericks and accidentally removed my applications folder in dock. Although I can still start apllications using launch pad, I'd like to know if and how can I make applications reappear in my applications folder. Can anyone help me, please?

In Finder (menu bar), try going to Go -> Applications.
Mavericks seems to have installed a secondary empty Application folder in my User directory. Maybe it's done the same thing with yours.

  • Root Applications folder is empty? ls -laO shows nothing

For some raisin, for the past couple days I've noticed my root applications folder is empty. The applications on the dock still launch fine, "Show in finder" shows an empty applications folder. ls -laO shows nothing. I notice that, if I look at it funny, sometimes the "utilities" folder pops up, but typically only for a few seconds. Same with with the MS Office folder. Searching for application names in spotlight shows them, but "open in enclosing folder" shows an empty Applications folder. Searching for Terminal shows Terminal, along with a full Utilities folder, but the applications folder is still empty when I go up the tree. I have no clue what's going on here. Can anyone give me an assist before I flatten and reinstall?

    Justin
in the root Applications folder, all my apps are there, but the Applications folder within my User folder is empty. The "root Applications folder" contains applications available for all user accounts to use. If you have an Applications folder in your User folder (I, for one, don't) it is for your own private applications. If you don't have any, you can delete that folder if you wish (but check there are no other files, eg support files or application "helper" folders, in there first).

  • How can I create application folder in home folder?

    Hi there,
I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
    I have two questions.
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research. Does anyone know if this is a bad thing?
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?
    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for the answer.
I've screwed up my computer before doing some dumb things without asking, so I was a little paranoid.

  • Application folder Changed name for no apparent reason.... Help Pls

    Hello there
I just install Leopard (and updated to 10.5.5) on my macbook pro. Checked few things in the Application folder, then few minutes later I went back to it, to realized that it had changed name to ( 0..) I've no idea why???? And another empty Application folder was created in the same path MAC HD/ Library
    1) Any idea why this happened.
    2) I wonder if there are any implications if I drag and drop all the app folders that reside in the now 0.. folder on to the new applications support folder.
    Thanks for Your help.

I have no idea why this happened, but as to renaming I would drag the new empty Applications folder to the trash and rename the original currently 0 back to Applications.
Then check that this correctly renamed Applications folder has permissions set to:
    System: read and write
    admin: read and write
    everyone: read only
Then in Disk Utility (Applications /Utilities) do Repair Permissions.
    See how that goes.

  • Applications folder problem

I tried to reinstall Firefox using the typical drag to apps folder method but nothing happens.  When I look for Firefox or any prog there's
    something very wrong.
I've attached a screengrab to show that it looks like at some point I've moved the whole apps folder!
The one is Users > Mac > Applications is empty!  The one in "Macintosh HD" has all the programs in.
I'm worried about doing anything else now because mainly I've got a huge film project on the go with AV files all over the place.
Do you have any idea what I could do?
    Thanks
    JD

Thanks but there's still something wrong.  Here's what happens when I try to install a prog (Firefox).  You can see the prog icon but it hasn't installed. (I've added the empty Applications folder to the sidebar and dragged the download into there as well).
As I said, the 'drag to Apps Folder installation facility (as in the blue window at the back) doesn't install it.  It just pops out a finder window and instantly shrinks back in again.  It's the same with the VLC Media player download.
So when I click on what looks like the installed prog icon to open it it just pops up the window below.
The Applicaitions folder from the menu bar pops up a bit slow too.
    This might give further clues....
    Thanks!

  • Applications folder is empty

How do I fix this? I'm on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (12C60) 2012 air, and although my main applications folder has my apps in it (Macintosh HD > Applications) and my launchpad looks fine, for some reason my user applications folder is completely empty (Macintosh HD > Users > MyName > Applications). I am the only user on this computer (other than guest account). I don't remember it being like this in previous versions of OS X. Is it meant to be empty unless I have apps installed only for myself?

I reinstalled operating system software on my MacBook Air (Yosemite 10.10.3) and tried reinstalling Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.  I was able to install the software into my Applications folder but I was unable to enter the serial number or go any further with the installation.  When I click on the Adobe Acrobat icon in the Applications folder, nothing happens.

    Hi Tom,
kindly check the System requirements | Acrobat family of products—older versions (XI, X, 9)
    For serial number message try:
    Error "Invalid serial number" | Acrobat 9 | CS4
