Yosemite froze on login screen

Good Day.
I am a South African Mac user and after the 10.10.2 upgrade everything was fine and yesterday I restarted and my screen got stuck at the login and would not go further than 50%.  I tried everything PRAM and even new installation of Yosemite but nothing.  I read it has something to do with file vault en encription, but connot get in, to switch it off.  I am a basic user and not yet very familliar with mac fixes and problems, can someone please help.  I am desperate.

Hi Piero,
As jy backups het van jou data is 'n nuwe installasie miskien die beste, maar jy kan die volgende stappe eers probeer:
Verseker dat jou Mac af is.
- Hold Command-R on the keyboard and turn on the Mac (Keep the keys held down)
- Click on Utilities or Disk utilities
- In the left column you should see Macintosh HD and underneath again Macintosh HD but greyed out
- Click on the greyed out Macintosh HD
- On the top bar you should see: Verify, Info... click on Unlock and enter the password your were asked to make for FileVault
- Next click on File at the very top menu bar and you should see 'Turn off encryption' .. click it.
- You will have to enter your password once again.
- Either a progress bar will appear and if not, restart your macbook as usual; Log in and start the System Preference, Security and Privacy, FileVault and hopefully it should be decrypting and giving you an estimated time which decreases very quickly.
If not successful, give a shout and I will post the steps for a totally new installation
Hoop dat dit help

  • Yosemite restarts on login screen

When I'm logged in and inactive after some time a see the login screen (that's ok and that's what I want ;)) but when OS is in that state after some time it reboots.
How can I fix that issue? Is it a bug in the OS or some wrong setting somewhere?

    Hello sloik84,
It may be due to the settings to log you out after a certain amount of time of inactivity. Check in System Preferences > Security & Privacy and in the General Tab you should see a button that says Advanced. In order to click it, you will need to click the lock in the lower left hand corner and enter in your password for your computer. Once that it is done you can click on Advanced and you will see a section called Log out after... minutes of inactivity and set it to how you want it to be.

  • Installing yosemite on windows login screen

Hi, after something went totaly wrong with my mac, I found myself stuck on the windows login screen (My mac also operated with windows). I didnt remember my windows password and I cant change it via mail or something. So I was really stuck in there and I think I should buy os x yosemite so I can install os x again. But my question is: If I put the stick in my mac, can I reinstall os x again or will nothing happen? Because if I buy it and nothing is gonna happen Ive bought that stick for nothing,
    Thank you!

You don't buy a USB drive with Yosemite on it. You download Yosemite from the App Store. To reinstall OS X:
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • After installing yosemite stuck on login screen

So against my better judgement, I decided to upgrade to Yosemite. The login seemed to be going ok, then I noticed it was stock on the progress bar... once again, against my better judgement, I did a hard reboot. When my iMac rebooted, it went through the loading screen ok, and onto my user login screen. After selecting my account and putting in my PW, it is now stuck on the color wheel loading icon... nothing happens. What are my options?

    Hi there,
They DID solve it at the genius bar!
He tried a few code tricks, aka booting up using command+S, but those didn't work.  He ran a restore permissions and reinstalled Lion (without removing any of my personal data) and hey presto, it works.  I'm typing to you now on the machine.
Is that enough info for you, or would you like me to get more..? I do have to go back soon for another issue.  I just want to help the community with problems.

  • Yosemite installed on iMac purchased with Mavericks now takes 2 minutes to boot and give the login screen.

Downloaded and installed os x yosemite on iMac that was purchased originally with Mavericks. When power button is pressed I get start up audio tone and then the the black screen with the white apple symbol with the progression bar. The bar moves very slowly two about one third and then the mouse cursor appears and there it stalls for around two minutes. After the wait the login screen appears and it operates normally. This whole process before update would only take maybe 30 seconds.
If I try the web recovery process it will revert back to Mavericks any suggestions on what this might be. I do have an external Mac passport pro external drive that does have time machine enabled and has been there for months.
    Thanks

After spending a number of hours with Apple Care personnel I was connected with a supervisor and finally got the iMac to boot up on every attempt and in a reasonable amount of time. Login screen now comes on in 30 to 40 seconds and computer is usable within a total time of 1 minute to 1minute 30 seconds.
Here was the process. Tried to download whole operating system with reinstall from utilities menu at power on and at 7 hours progress bar stalled at one third the way. Reason, time machine external hard drive was still connected during process. Disconnected all external connections except power and tried download again. This time whole operating system downloaded in 15 to 20 minutes. Yosemite installed and rebooted automatically and booted to login screen, signed in then to desktop, but boot took around five minutes. Shutdown and connected all peripherals, i.e.. ext. HD, DVD, printers and tried to start. iMac stalled at 2 minutes into progression bar with white apple symbol before login screen. Removed peripherals and tried again and still stalled and would not boot.
What was done to correct is as follows. Started iMac in Safe Mode, cleared all items in cache from Macintosh HD/Library folder and System /Library folder, system start up items, launch agents, and launch daemons contents cleared, removed printers in system preferences, ran disk utilities verify and repair of disk and disk permissions. Shutdown and removed power from iMac. With no peripherals system then booted normally. Reconnected peripherals while iMac was still on and added printers back to system preferences and all is well.
So it seems only reasonable that the downloading problem was hindered by the time machine external hard drive, to which an Apple rep. agreed and the extremely slow boot up or stalled boot up was caused by items in the start up and launch folders. I will state here that I was using my ISP's anti virus software for the Mac which was in the launch folders and most likely was causing the boot up problems.

  • Install failed due to loss of power and Yosemite will now not go past login screen. Help!

I recently tried to install OS X Yosemite.  unfortunately during the install my laptop was unplugged and the installation failed mid way through.  Each time I start my mac I get to login screen and after logging in get an error message and told to restart and try again - which does not resolve the issue.  Guest login do work to the safari screen.  Any help hugely appreciated.
    The error message reads:
You need to restart your computer.  Hold down the power button until it turns off, then Press the power button again.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Upgrade to Yosemite cause weird dual screen mirror on login only

I just upgraded (and also tried a fresh install to an external drive with the same results) to Yosemite from Mavericks. When I start the MPB I get the apple and the thermometer (white fill in bar) every time I reboot after a complete shutdown. Then, the login screen is mirrored on the external monitor and LCD in a non wide screen resolution (looks like 1024x768). After I log in it looks ok but this doesn't happen with Mavericks. I just got this MBP Jan 2014. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also tried cmd-opt-p-r.

A friend just told me the apple/thermometer is normal for Yosemite so ignore that part.

  • Crazy Yosemite Login Screen.

After I upgraded to Yosemite on my MBP (early 2011), at least once every few days I will open my computer to a login screen that looks like this.
The screen is never frozen, and I can type in my password and log in, but it just looks crazy.
Also, sometimes if I open my computer within a few minutes of having previously closed it, it will load all my previous windows, freeze for a minute, show the login screen like it wants me to enter my password, and then it reverts back to allowing me continue my work.
These are two oddities that I noticed after installing Yosemite, and I just didn't know if anyone else had anything similar happen to them.
Also, before I upgraded OS X, my computer has been running pretty slow and I've observed a couple other weird glitches that I did not document.
Is it possible that my HDD is on the brink of failure?
    Any input would be appreciated!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Yosemite upgrade - problem with login screen

I've upgraded to yosemite yesterday and now I can't login to my user account - I have login screen with Upgrade needed and Guest User. When I click Guest user I have only Safari available.
Macbook Pro, late 2011, Yosemite (10.10)

The same here: at startup my computer shows a gray screen without my usual login pic, and the indication [upgrade needed]. If i go into the process a progress bar shows that something is happening then finally the system does the login and the computer works fine.
If I go back to the login window from Yosemite my usual login window appears properly and i can login and logout as usual.
The problem seems to come out starting up the machine only.
    MacBook Pro (15", early 2011)
    Thanks

  • Yosemite sends me to login screen - while I'm working!

Not every day, but (far) too often, Yosemite will throw some kind of a snit and send me to my login screen!
I have no clue what precipitates this, but it is most unwanted behavior.
Anyone know about this? Anyone experience it themselves?
    thank you

    That's my understanding.

  • Login screen on Yosemite remains plain white instead of blurred wallpaper

    Hello,
My login screen on updating OSX Yosemite remains plain white instead of being colorful blur image of my desktop. I tried several options, but couldn't fix the issue. It remains colorful when put to sleep but not on restart. My friends' login screen is still the blurred image of desktop on updating to Yosemite. COuld someone suggest me a way to fix this issue. I dont like the plain white screen upon login.

I had my normal desktop background showing up at login (only one account), but I changed a desktop to a solid color for a presentation and then back to the original image afterwards. After doing that, my login screen now shows the solid blue that I used, even though no desktops are set to the solid color anymore.
Not a solution... but I have absolutely no idea where it is pulling that solid blue background from, and I would guess its probably the same as where its pulling your mismatched login screen from.
edit -- the solid color is only when the computer has been fully shut down; for sleep/lock/etc I get my background image. But, I did used to get my normal image as a login background after fully shutting down.

  • MacBook Pro with retina display (2014) stuck on login screen after latest Yosemite update

Yesterday I ran the latest Yosemite update. The MacBook restarted afterwards, but the login screen won't respond to trackpad or keyboard. The MacBook is fully charged, BTW. I've shut down by holding the power key until it powers off, let it rest, and powered up again. I get the chime and the login screen, but I can't select anything either with trackpad or keyboard.
    OH

Sorry folks, this is me again.
NEVER MIND. I closed the lid, opened it, and all is well. I don't know what was going on, but it seems to have resolved itself.

  • Stuck at login screen after Yosemite Upgrade - 2013 27" imac won't recognize keyboard or mouse

I installed yosemite without issues on my 2013 macbook pro retina so decided to try it on my 2013 27" imac. Install went fine until I get to login screen. Wireless keyboard and mouse won't pair so I can't type in password. Connected generic wired keyboard and mouse and still won't recognize it.
However, when I restart it I can hold down option on keyboard and it will bring up list of hard drives to boot from (I also have windows installed with bootcamp) so I know imac pairs the key

So the iMac was purchased by my father in 2011 shortly before he died.  I thought, why not check if he also purchased Applecare at the same time? Turns out he did! So after calling and trying to reset the SMC, etc. with it not working the Apple tech told me to turn it over to an authorized repair shop here in Louisiana.  Hopefully they can fix it.

  • Yosemite - login screen on low res

    Hello all,
i'm facing strange issue. After update to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Retina ( Mid 2012 ) login screen appears in low-res.
I've tried changing resolution and several restarts but no luck so far. Anyone had same issue?
    Thanks for any advice.

Also experiencing this on my Late-2013 15" rMBP...it wasn't present during the early OSX 10.10 betas but has been persistent over the last few and now with the full release.
I have done a full, clean install as well to see if something was fubared in the settings but nope. What a really silly issue to have. 10.10 wasn't ready for primetime, these aren't the type of bugs that people should be experiencing.
What I can say though is that for me, this issue is limited to when i'm using an external display. If I use my laptop without anything connected externally it doesn't happen.

  • MACbook Pro brand new, froze up on me. I get a login screen then.... Gray?

Can someone please help me. I have a brand new MACbook pro and I tried transferring my PC data. But now my Mac is froze up. I  get a login screen then gray........
    <Edited by Host>

Hold down the Shift key on Restart, right after the startup tone.
That will boot into Safe Mode, which will run some disk checks and clear out some caches. If it boots, then restart normally and see what happens.

I've never transferred from a PC, so I don't know what Migration Assistant would have done. I can't imagine it would have transferred anything over that would do any damage to the system.
