Yosemite grey screen/restart loop- Mac Pro

Hi - I am trying to instal a fresh copy of Yosemite onto a new SSD in my Mac Pro 2009 and cannot get it to complete the installation. I am currently running Mavericks 10.9.4 from the stock HDD.
I have carefully followed steps to format the new SSD drive using Mac OS Journaled with a single GUID Partition.
I have tried two types of instal:
1. From a Bootable USB stick - created by Disk Maker X
The instal goes though initialisation, then the timed instal screen stage (which it completes), then it reboots to a grey screen (completely blank). It sits there for a few mins and eventually I hear the disks starting up and it boots straight into Mavericks.
2. Via the Yosemite installer straight from Mavericks. It lets you choose a destination drive, so I select the SSD, it does it's thing but after the first reboot just goes right back to the very first installation screen....
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks

  • Grey screen restart in several different languages

My ibook G4 (2005/6) greys out. My friend's computer did the same thing and replaced the airport card and sorted the problem. My apple dealer told me it was logic board? My airport card isn't easily found as the puter is older.
    what do I do.

Hi wickovski, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Grey screen restart in several different languages
That is a Kernal Panic, your dealer may be right. See if it does it trying below.
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

Have you booted off the Install Disk by holding the *d key* down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs.
Here's the list and downloads for AHT...

  • How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core 2010 model?

How can I hook up 3 screens to a Mac Pro 8 core. One is a 23' Apple Cinema Display, the second is a 20" Apple cinema display and the 3rd is a 32' Sony Bravia HDTV (connected to mini port with mini/HDMI connector) Do I need to buy another video card? I have heard  about 4 different scenarios about this, and they all sound a bit complicated. I thought that you could automatically connect 3 displays with the card that comes with the MacPro. It has a DVI port and 2 mini ports, so it appears that would be for 3 displays. But this is where it gets strange. Any thoughts?

Which video card?  5x70?  If you read about the various scenarios thern for 5x70's you need two active adapters for thee monitors (TV considered a monitor).  And you should have seen references to these apple docs:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
It's not really complicated.  Search out the appropriate adapters and hook 'em up.   For the 23" and 20", if they are DVI, you need single link adapters.  For the TV, if you end up using the DVI port for it (because possibly you can't find the appropate adapter cmbination) then you need to handle the audio separately since DVI doesn't carry audio.

  • MacBook Pro Presents a Grey Screen & Restarts Over and Over

I just got my new 2.7Ghz i7 last tuesday and even after the first time I turned it on and completed updates, restarted, and I was just running safari and itunes, randomly a grey screen came up saying that I needed to restart the computer. I thought it was a one time deal, but then it happened on thursday. Now, today I was working on assignment on pages, with safari running as well, and then the same screen came up and I lost everything. And then it did it 2 more times within the span of 10 minutes, those times not even having anything running. It's been fine for the rest of today, other than having to restart my assignment since I hadn't saved it yet, but the things is I had my previous macbook pro 13" that I purchased in october 2010 and that never happened once. Now, I've had this one for a week and it's happened 7 times. What do you recommend? If I bought it online, can I bring it to a store to exchange it.

Hi clifton, and welcome to apple DIscussions.
I would bring it to an Apple Store asap and if it's not something simple, I'd ask for an exchange.

  • Snow Leopard Server fails when I restart my Mac Pro

I have a new Mac Pro that I've been running Snow Leopard Server on. When I restarted my computer it wouldn't boot up. It would only get to the screen with the apple symbol and the spinning dial under it. I had to totally reset up the computer and server software. 2 weeks later the same thing happened and I had to reset it all up again! A week later the same thing happened so I just gave up and installed Snow Leopard. I was using the computer as a "regular computer" meaning I had all my music, photos, other apps.... but nothing was installed or changed the day and the day before it failed. I didn't even have time to set up web hosting and all that crap. I was just browsing the web using Safari.
And yes everything was up to date.
I would love to go back to Server but I'm not going through all that crap again!!
Any ideas for what the problem could be would be great!
one last thing. Finder froze the last time which is why I had to restart; if that helps anyone.
but please leave a message even if you think it wouldn't affect it.

I would suspect your jumpers settings are wrong. These are cable select...try that not slave/master

  • Jittery fuzzy screen on a Mac Pro

I just purchased a used Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 Quad Mac Pro on eBay. In testing it, the screen (an Optiquest 22" that works fine that I owned previously) is flickering and fuzzy.  Then when I mess with the display system preferences it clears up and is sharp again.  On a restart it goes back to the fuzzy jittery look again until I re-open the system prefs.
It's running 10.8.4 but I don't have the install discs.  I do have the Discs for my old computer (10.6.8)  Seems like it's a software issue since it gets cleared up with some mousing around and futzing.  Should I re-install the older 10.6.8 to see if that fixes it?
It's a clean install of 10.8 now so it's no big deal to blank out the OS.
I would rather not return this thing is I can sort it out.  I'd have to pay $60 to return it.
    Thanks for any help!

So here's more information on this.  I have clean installed 10.6 on the HD.  Same problem.
I switched monitors and another monitor I have doesn't seem to be affected by the jittery fuzzy screen symptom. I checked and switched the monitor cables and that didn't do it.
I didn't seem to be messed up when I start up with the Optiquest 22 main monitor in the second monitor position from the video card connections.
On start up, the apple logo on the gray screen is sharp but as soon as the dsktop appears it goes fuzzy.
When I go to displays in the systems settings and switch between display resulotions it clears right up and looks sharp and perfect.
So at this point I've ruled out the OS and cables.
It seems to be an incompatibility with the Optiquest screen. But only when used in the primary monitor position.
This monitor has worked perfectly on my older mac pro, from 2 years previous (2006 model) Wondering if there's some software I can use to try and get the screen working right?
I suppose I can buy another, newer monitor if the Optiquest is glitching out but I'd rather not as I know it works fine normally.
    Any thoughts?

  • G3 won't startup (grey screen with happy mac)

My sister has a iMac G3 that all of a sudden stopped working. When it's turned on, we get the chime, a grey screen and a happy mac, that's all. It just sits there. I've tried restarting with the C down, using the PRAM trick, putting in a CD startup disk (though not the one it came with), disconnecting the USB drve/hub, but get nothing. We've had problems with the CD drive before, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was broken too. Any help would be appreciated. It's a blue iMac (maybe a 350mhz?. Thanks in advance
    iMAC G3 (350mhz)   Mac OS 9.0.x

You may need to replace the PRAM battery. A weak or dead battery has been known to cause startup problems.
If you can startup from a Mac OS installation CD, you can run Disk First Aid from the CD (for Mac OS 9) in the Utilities folder, and verify (and repair if necessary) the internal drive.
If you suspect the CDROM drive, you can also try disconnecting the CDROM drive internally to see of this will allow the iMac to start up. Sometimes, a bad drive will prevent another drive on the IDE bus to not be recognized.

  • Sudden Restarts on Mac Pro.

As of the past week or two, My Mac Pro has been doing sudden restarts.
The latest was in the middle of a film scan.
I set the scan up, walked away from the computer while it scanned and a few minutes into a 25 minute scan, the computer shut down and gave me the 'gong' sound. Upon the reboot, it gave me the error message that an unexpected shut down happened and do i want to send a report to Apple.
Yesterday i was getting the same thing. These mostly happen while the computer is idle.
The only difference with yesterday was that upon reboot, i got the error message with the power button symbol asking me to hold the power button down and shut down the machine and then restart.
I did a reset where i shut down the computer, and unplugged everything from the rear of the machine for a minute or so. still sudden shut downs.
I have read that this is common on the MacBooks but i have not seen anything on the Towers.
Please advise? i have a few months left on Apple care.
    Thanks.

Seems like we have three different threads.
I don't believe the article on SMC RESET is accurate, at least leaving unpowered for couple minutes doesn't seem to work, try overnight, until they return to using a physical SMC button.
Run AHT in Extended Loop. And run Memtest. Marginal RAM is still bad ram.
There should also be a UPS, worth every penny, along with AppleCare - and do pay for extended warranty. Now.
Heat is always worth checking. Boost the fans. Monitor temp readings - Hardware Monitor is more accurate than freeware program iStat.
Clone your system and put it someplace safe off line on FW drive.
    Run Disk Warrior.
Don't continue to use after a freeze or hard restart, repair it and boot from your emergency boot hard drive that has 10.5.5 (latest) along with Disk Warrior and other tools.
Do some maintenance. Onyx 2.0 or Leopard Cache Cleaner.
There WAS an issue with freeze and restarts on wake from sleep that was addressed (April?) with EFI firmware patch update.
Kernel panics are as varied as user setups. RAM, USB and FW devices AND cables. Tablets, input devices of any kind.
And if you don't stumble on why and solution, and a clean fresh OS (and be careful what you install, and double-check along the way) schedule an appointment to get it looked at, you're right, it isn't normal, but it could be something like a printer driver or connection too.

  • Yosemite - Grey screen and shut down

I Upgraded to Yosemite last night. Now When I boot the machine I see Grey screen with a time bar and then blank white screen and then it shuts down

    Hi ..

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to verify and repair the startup disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery

  • Grey Screen "Restart"...

Since attempting to install the new 10.4.8 patch, my computer will no longer start up. I get a grey screen with the message to restart in like 5 languages.
I've done that a few times. Then whipped out the OSX disk and used disk utility, repaired permissions. (Not sure if it matters much but with a small amount of bar left it hangs there for a LONG while before it finishes. I've even run it a few times, it always does this, and doesn't claim to find any more errors.)
I then try Repair Disk and I get this error,
    "Invalid sibling link
    Volume check failed.
Error:The underlying task reported failure on exit"
It still doesn't run if I restart either. The same grey window.
I've also tried an archive and install so that I didn't lose anything important but doing that just gives me an error that says there were errors installing the software, please try installing again.
Anyone have any clue if this is at all fixable, or am I basically screwed and need to format/install. There is some important information on my computer that I need badly (yeah, yeah, backup, I know...).

I get a grey screen with the message to restart in like 5 languages.
This indicates what is called a kernel panic.
Why Apple doesn't recommend this as a warning message or at least an FYI but you should check the hard drive for any directory errors with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from the Tiger install disc #1 that shipped with the Mac or with the Tiger retail install package if an older Mac that shipped with an earlier OS X version installed which now running Tiger that was installed via the Tiger retail install package before installing a major OS update such as 10.4.8.
More than likely, this was an underlying/unnoticed hard drive directory problem that was brought to the surface by installing the 10.4.8 update.
If there is a hard drive directory problem that Disk First Aid repair cannot successfully repair after running repair several times, the problem is substantial and you have two options which does not include re-installing via an Archive & Install.
Purchase a more substantial disk repair utility such as Disk Warrior (with no guarantees but DW has been known to work miracles when other options have failed) or reformat the hard drive with your Tiger install package and re-install the OS and all included software along with re-installing all 3rd party software.
And as you indicated, one of the reasons why maintaining a backup is so important. If you have access to another Mac, you can try connecting this Mac to the other Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode in an attempt to recover the important information before reformatting the hard drive.
For future reference before installing a major OS update such as 10.4.8, check this link.

  • How to get 10 screens on a Mac Pro

    Hi All:
I'm trying to figure out how to get 10 screens working together like one big desktop on a Mac Pro.
Currently I have a 12core 2010 Mac Pro with 2 ATI 5770 cards driving 6 30" cinema displays.  Each of these cards are double wide.
I want to connect 4 65" LED displays.
Does anyone have an idea how I can do this?  The Mac Pro has only 4 slots.  The two 5770s take up 3 spaces (because of their doulbe wide size).  The last slot has a OWC solidstate drive there.  I guess I could remove that and use just a regular SATA SSD if need be, but would love to get this done with just 3 slots.
So some thoughts. There are two possible ways (ideal, and less ideal) that I can think of:
    IDEAL way:
The ideal would be to find a single wide card that supports 5 or 6 displays, and use that.  I know that some people have had success flashing single wide cards, but it's not clear if all the ports are usable.  See here for an ATI card with 3 ports, single slot, that's been flashed:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Mac-Pro-ATI-Radeon-HD-5770-1GB-Video-Card-Single-S lot-5870-/150928552679?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item23240af2e7
Also, it's not clear if you could get 4 of those cards working to drive all 10 screens.
However, there are single wide 5/6 display cards like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150566&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junc tion&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10440897&PID=3332167&SID=u00000687
Has any seen or know of a 5 port card like the above that has been flashed to work in a Mac Pro?
    LESS ideal way:
My guess is there are some PCI expansion chasis, and I can just put in 2 more regular ATI 5770s there.  I found this:
    http://www.jmr.com/en/products/14/3-slot-pcie-extender/
    and this
    http://www.magma.com/catalog/classic-pci-expansion
I'm not sure how well these extenders work.
    EVEN LESS ideal way:
Perhaps getting another Mac or PC and somehow VNC'ing in is an option, but this likely would be too laggy to run video from one computer to the other.  The ideal is to just treat the system like one giant screen, but I'm open to hearing any experiences/suggestions on getting this to work.
    Thanks so much!

After reading up on it, it seems that the 6850 supports 3 displays. So perhaps I could do one 6870 (4 displays) in slot one, and then 2 single slot 6850's or 5770's in slots 2 and 3. This would give 10 displays.
    I have 3 questions then:
    (1) What is the quietest 6870 card people have successfully used in a Mac Pro?
    (2) What is quietest single slot 6850 or 5770 card successfully used in a Mac Pro?
    (3) Has anyone gotten thiis 5770 single slot card to work on a Mac Pro, and have they gotten 5 display ports to work?
