Yosemite GUI & Finder Responsiveness

Hey folks,
I've updated my 2012 MacBook Pro Retina (Intel4000+Nvidia 650M version), and am having two issues:
1.     GUI Responsive
2.     Illustrator CS4 Crashing (plugin errors)
3.     Finder Responsiveness
1. Regarding GUI responsiveness, I feel like transitions between interface elements are slow and/or stutter.  For instance, the System Preference panes somewhat choppily draw themselves when navigating between different preferences.  This behavior also presents itself when rendering webpages in Safari or Chrome.
2.  This is really annoying, but Illustrator CS4 will not load.  It reports a problem with the Photoshopimport.aip plugin.  If you remove the plugin and try to relaunch, it stalls on another plugin in.  I've tried both Java 6 SE from Apple, and Java 8 from Oracle.  Still have the same issue.  This is particularly annoying.
3.  Finder has issues for sure.  When opening Finder, sometimes files are not displayed.  Sometimes when you open finder a few files are displayed, but when you scroll through them, nothing else is there.  This issue is intermittent, but obviously annoying.
Any thoughts?  Is it possible to tap into my 650M instead of just the Intel graphics to help resolve the GUI issues?  I would give up some battery if the discrete graphics could handle a little bit more of the GUI.  That said, issues 2 and 3 are new to me.
Best,
Tony

I've reinstalled Yosemite to no avail, here is the spew on the console (multiplied many times over) when the Finder hangs for a while at boot:
if anyone can decrypt this, provide clues, I am more than willing to experiment with junk

I got a question in Discoverer.
Is there a way to find Responsibility name in EUL10_US user in Database side. I mean in EUL tables can we able to find what Responsibilties been shared the report.
I see many EUL tables when we login as EUL10_US user Toad, I would like to know the Report with which ORacle responsibilities shared.
Any ideas on this -thanks a lot!!!

I wrote a query that I've been using for a while that shows me the owner, report name, and who (responsibility included) that the report is shared to. Hopefully you'll be able to modify to suit your needs.

Having downloaded Yosemite, I find that I can't enlarge the print on the Help pages.   The 'Command +' keystroke doesn't seem to work.   Anybody any ideas as to how to do it in the new OS X 10.10 ?

    Hi ..
Command + T should definitely work.
Restart your Mac then try again.
If that doesn't help, a Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help after an OS X upgrade.
Top left corner of your screen click the  Apple   > Shut Down.
After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.
Once you are in Safe Mode, go back to the Apple  menu. From the drop down menu click:  Restart
Then try enlarging the text in a Help window.
    About Safe Mode.

mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.
It is taking an hour to power up and mac apple logo appear onscreen. No finder controls or "clicks" are being recognized. Spinning beachball all the time.
Using hard power off and holding the mouse down, I was able to open the optical drive and then restart with "c" and ask the dvd to reinstall the system, but it has stalled before finishing the installation.
This happened about 4 days ago, first it started responding slowly, and then it just keeps spinning the beachball. I can't find hardware test. I did run etrecheck, it did not have any error messages, but I can't copy or move the data anywhere.... I am not able to access the mac pro with another machine, and now I am stuck in install freeze, so I can't copy etrecheck by hand onto a piece of paper.
Without being able to finish a reinstall, what can I try?
After it got bad, and before it got REALLY bad, I managed to repair permissions, but it took a long time. Most of a day. When I restarted from that, things were only worse.
Mac Pro 1,1 , 11 GB ram, 7300, 5TB hard drives, OS 10.6.8,  the drive containing the system folder is/was 700 used, 290 free. While I could get commands to respond, I put Activity monitor on the desktop and watched it.  System memory was 3.31 GB used, about 7 free, and some wired. No app was using a huge amount.
what should I try next? I put a bid on a new/old machine so that I could move the 4 hard drives over.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Please correct me as I articulate this.
I have three versions( 5, 6, CC) of the Adobe Master Collection which I keep active for different clients. I have final cut and motion. I have Office 365. I have a collection of graphic apps that are individually not too big but in all, my app folder is 65GB and my bootcamp partition is 61GB. I can't fit all this on 120 ssd and a 256 will be full once I install, correct? drives should be half open?
Somehow I did not make it clear enough that I was trying to copy onto a 2TB drive I had just initiallized in order to try and save files from my startup drive. I don't use time machine. I take a day or a few days worth of documents and physically move them to another drive at night.  If a series is finished I make two dvd's as well. The second black drive that was failing was the drive I moved my backup documents onto. At no point was I trying to backup onto the failing drives. I was trying to copy off both of them onto the other two drives, a third aux backup that has been there for a while, and a newish 2 TB which I designated as the startup drive when all this trouble started.
I wondered if there were any good techniques for trying to get the data off the failing drive. Thanks for the suggestion of Data Rescue 3. I don't have it yet, but I will try it as soon as I get it. I was never trying to repair in place.
I am very interested in getting a pci bracket and an ssd, but I may wait until I can afford the larger one. If I get an older bracket that is compatible with my old mac pro 1,1  ,  I'd like to be able to move it to a mac pro 3,1 if I get one. Will the larger ssd drives be compatible with the sata in a pci bracket that can work in my mac pro 1,1 ? sata 2 versus something else? If 240 or 256 is my size limit, how much more than my 65 and 61 GB partitions can I put on there? How much of a scratch disc can I make if I leave another 39 GB of headroom on my bootcamp partition? I'm filling 165 GB without making any allowance for temp files.
You have said that 120 is enough for any system. I think I must be misunderstanding something. Are you saying that assuming that most people run office and photoshop and maybe lightroom?
I have and use 4 HDD in this machine, mostly for document storage in two places.
I took out all but the group of 2GB ram chips I bought a year and a half ago. The old ram had passed the hardware test the last time I had access to the hardware test. Two black drives failed, one was a year old and one was a year and a half old, and that it may have been exacerbated by the heat wave. I don't know why the video and the monitor were affected save that the startup drive was failing. I am trying to replace the card.
With all this said, I am also looking at a used mac pro 3,1 with a better video card since a newer machine will likley be compatible through another OS upgrade. If a machine costs only a little more than a new card, it might be a better way to go.
I don't have any sources that offer an ssd for 100. ( of a size that is useful)
How large is your application folder?

The search feature in Yosemite only finds a few files when I know many more exist. Is there a fix for this problem?

Are you searching for file names or content?  If it's the latter dDownload and run Find Any File to search for the same file names.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there are files with those file names on the hard drive FAF will find them.
In any case reindex the HD for Spotlight according to this Apple document: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support

  • How to find Responsibility through which the user has logged in to Disco.

    Hi All,
I have got a requirement to create a "Usage Report Summary by Responsibility" for all Oracle user having an Access to Oracle Disco Viewer.
In the report, I need to show the list of Oracle Users and the Responsibilities through which an User has logged in to Disco Viewer.
Kindly help me in finding the corresponding Disco tables to full-fill this requirement.
    Available Information/queries in my Hand:
    1. Query to find the list of Workbook and its shared Responsibilities
    2. Query to find number of times an Oracle Disco Report has been run.
    Thanks a ton in Advance
    Arun

    Hi Arun
The first place to look is to try running one of the pre-built workbooks created by Oracle for this purpose.
I see you are working in Apps mode. Therefore, you'll need to run both of these scripts when logged in as the owner of the EUL:
    1. EUL5.SQL
    2. EUL5_APPS.SQL
You will find both scripts in the $ORACLE_HOME/Discoverer/Util folder where your Discoverer Administrator tool is located.
Next, you will need to log into the Administrator tool and import this EEX file: EUL5.EEX
You will find the EEX file located in $ORACLE_HOME/Discoverer, again on the PC where Discoverer Administrator tool is located.
After you have imported the EUL, log into Desktop or Plus and open up the EUL5 workbook that you will now see in the list and work through the various worksheets. You should find one or two that will give you what you want.
Let us know how you get on
    Best wishes

  • Where to find response file (Suse Linux)?

    Hi,
I would like to do a Silent and Non-active Installation of OBI on Linux. Following the instructions on http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14504_01/dl/core/install/appdx_d.htm there should be a stage/Response directory. However there is nothing like this in the file system I downloaded from oracle.
I have downloaded the following file from oracle: biee_linux_x86_SUSE_101341.zip
Could you please help me finding a response file for the installation.
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Evgeny

As explained on the link you posted the response files are in the "Oracle Developer Suite" CD/DVD, not in the OBIEE installation file. Download Oracle Developer Suite and check there.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite = No Finder, No Sound, No Menus, Spotlight not working

I downloaded Yosemite and immediately afterwards I noticed huge problems. I have no sound. Clicking on Finder brings up an empty window that has the different colours of grey/white that are in the Finder but nothing else - no words, no exit button, nothing. Spotlight doesn't search for anything on my Mac it just searches the internet. Google Chrome is unusable because the screen is constantly flashing white horizontal lines/bars (whenever I move the mouse, type something in, watch a video etc.) There is nothing in any drop down menus (sorry I don't think that's what they're called) I can see the top menu but when I click the apple logo for example there is just a long white bar, nothing in it. Same with everything else. The top header bar is all there but the writing is uneven... the battery percentage, date and time are not centered but pushed way up, my name on the right is in a smaller font and is also raised up from the center. After I opened finder it is one big window that I can't get rid of, quit out of, nothing. If I try moving it it resets itself to the center. I've found some things online that say there could be corrupted files I have to get rid of but I can't search for them in spotlight or manually look for them in the finder window since spotlight won't search for anything in my mac and I can't see anything in the finder window.
The one thing I haven't noticed is speed difference... everything runs pretty much at the same speed if I can get it to open...
I have a Macbook Pro 13" mid 2012, 2.4 ghz... Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4gb ram, not retina display... that is all I can remember, I can't bring up the "About my Mac" tab because I can't see it. I was also really dumb and didn't make a backup of anything before doing this.
*I can't even select anything from the drop down menus in this forum to "identify your product and operating system" UGH

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

  • Yosemite cannot find startup disk

Hi, I have a problem with Yosemite installed on my mid2007 iMac, which has me perplexed. After installing Yosemite I found that on booting, my iMac would not find the startup disk, and shows me a blinking question mark. The iMac might sometimes find the startup disk the first time after installation, but would fail to find the startup disk on subsequent startups. So to get the iMac to start I boot into my yosemite installer flash drive go to the start up disk section in the apple menu of the installer and select startup disk from there, and that gets me into the Yosemite session. Less than ideal.
    I have tried a number of things;
A couple of clean installs of Yosemite 10.10.2.
Checking the integrity of the Hard Disk with Disk utility. (it said it was OK in cheery green lettering) I have had an aftermarket Corsair Neutron SSD as the startup disk for 8 months or so, which has been running well.
Checking the hardware with Apple Hardware Test which said no problems detected. I did this as I also had  other issues, like beachballs occurring, particularly on the login page delaying login, and a couple of instances of Yosemite telling me that it couldn't shut down immediately because I had a app open, when I had in fact quit the app earlier.
A couple more clean installs, one next to last where even the Yosemite installer flash drive could not see the start up disk. With the last clean install I currently can start the iMac with the help of the installer flash drive.
Googled around, but didn't find a lead.
The only option I can think of to enable me to boot into Yosemite with less fuss is to install Refit, a program that helps people who want to dual boot linux on their mac. It may be able to present the startup disk.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.
iMac 7,1(24-inch Mid 2007),2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo,  4 GB memory, 256Gb Corsair Neutron SSD,  ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB

The repairs were unrelated. I had a bad logic board and some bad RAM. The hard drive checked out fine.

  • Mail is unable to find response to messages

When selecting the backward arrow icon in the mail column view I get an error message reading 'Mail was unable to find your response to the message “message title”. You may have deleted the message.'
This occurs frequently, even right after sending an e-mail. I am confused as I did not delete the copy of the outgoing message and it is still found in the "sent" message mailbox.
This did not occur in my old Powerbook but has started in my new MacBook Pro. I have everything set up the same as my Powerbook so, again I am confused. The email accounts are POP (not imap), if that makes a difference.
Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

This is a problem that has been reported here quite a few times and for which no solution has been found yet. Doing some cache-cleaning, or even just restarting the computer, fixed the problem in some cases.
Read the following article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures:

In addition to the utilities mentioned there for cache cleaning, you may also consider OnyX or Cache Out X, which are free.

  • Mail unable to find responses

Lately, I get the message "Mail was unable to find your response" when I click on the response arrow next to an email in the main window.
I found an old (now locked) thread on this topic and deleted my Caches/Mail folder as suggested, but the problem persists. I've tried rebuilding my mailboxes to no avail. The thread mentioned looking for the .emix files associated with my replies but I don't know how to go about this.
    Does anyone have ideas?

    Hi John, I'd get EasyFind...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11076
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8707
Use that to search your whole drive or home folder for...
    .emlx
Then sort by date modified or such to see if you can guess which ones might be associated... in easyfind you can just double click on them to have mail find them.
You could search by content also, but that'd take a longer time.

  • Illustrator CC and Yosemite Update - finder issues

    Hey!
Anyone out there having issues with the finder in Illustrator CC after the update of Yosemite?

  • Yosemite no finder preferences

I have just installed the Yosemite upgrade on both my iMacs. One is working fine. However the Finder preferences box on the iMac 3.5 GHy Intel Core 7 is now blank. The General. Tags, Sidebar and advanced are all missing. Have I deleted something by mistake? I tried reloading the upgrade but the same thing happens.
I don't think I need the functionality immediately, but it would be good to get it fixed.
However I also have lost the small window that shows the status of finder copying files. It does copy the file and there is a sound when the action is complete. But there is no widow showing progress or showing when there is a duplicate file etc...
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you ever so much. Yes you solved my problem. Firstly creating a new user made everything work OK. Then I realised from what you said that there was a rogue app causing a clash...and that the app had to be something  connected with Finder......So I went back to my originasl log-in deleted one app called thumb creator, or something like that, and all is fine again.
I am so relieved and happy
    Thank you
