1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

HT201364 I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook Pro extremely slow
I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook very slow. Browsing has become slow. Mail hardly moves. It takes ages to show contents of inbox, yes including previously downloaded emails too. Thus the overall experience is very disappointing. IS THERE A WAY TO GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS OS X that I had? OS X Mavericks should be renamed as OS X HAVOCKWRECKS.
I am just a Apple user guy.

4 GB RAM This is a minimum amount of RAM for basic Mavericks function (I know the specs say 2 GB). If you are doing anything more than just checking your email you may want more RAM, especially if you are doing things that are more memory intensive, like audio/video recording/editing. It all depends on your degree of tolerance for the SBBOD (the spinning beachball of death). At the moment you've got no page-outs so that's good.

These next categories are all things that are loaded at startup and can be potential causes for poor performance, as they run in the background. These all need to be looked at carefully if you want your mac to run better. The rules are:
1) if you can live without the app that installs these potential culprits, uninstall it. You have to uninstall the app itself, not just the file that is listed here.
2) if you can't live without the app, then at least research it to see if it is compatible with Mavericks, and make sure you have the latest version.
Some of these I don't know about, but I've marked those with **; you'll have to research them yourself.

Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow !! Need help ? what is the solution?
I've ran a benchmark on my Mac (iMac early 2009). Performance of Yosemite in general was about the same as Mavericks. But that can be different on other Mac's of course. Safari is mostly a bit slower. It's recommended you clean your old internet-caches and then restart Safari. (you can use a little app called CCleaner to do that). That might make a difference. Speed-issues are usually solved in the first and second update of OS X.

Update to Mavericks 10.9.5 made my MacBook Pro extremely slow!
Update to 10.9.5 made my MacBook Pro (2011) extremely slow. I upgraded on the 30th Sep and since then it's getting worse and worse. Today was totally impossible to work with it.
It freezes in Safari or iTunes, several Apps crash, Numbers stops responding all the time, loses wifi, loses connectivity with printer/scanner, overheats, puts memory into pressure and drains battery. I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions but nothing works. I have already backed up my stuff to an external drive.
How do I fix all this?? I'm getting desperate. Thanks.Hi Linc,
Thanks for your input!
In fact, the major problem happened around 04:00pm yesterday, the 14th. It has been getting worse since the update on the 30th.
I tried as much as possible to be selective but in 2 hrs a lot happened. Most of code repetitions were deleted.

First: you need a backup. Then:
I would boot into the recovery partition (restart and hold down ⌘ R until you see the apple logo) and use disk utility to repair your HD. Repair permissions while you are there too.
I'd also get rid of the google keystone agent, which is a frequent flyer here for slowing macs down.
Then restart and see how things are.
If that doesn't fix it then I'd reinstall Yosemite over the current installation.
If that doesn't fix it then you probably need to start over with a clean install (i.e., backup your documents, erase your HD, and reinstall everything from scratch). -
OS X Yosemite has made my MacBook very slow
Hello all.
The new OS X Yosemite update has made my MacBook (13-inch 2006-2010) really slow. Has anyone else had this problem and how do you resolve it? I would have thought Apple would bring out another update by now to help the slowness it has bought to my Mac but I am still waiting and to be honest, getting very fed up with how slow it is.
It is a MacBook 13-inch late 2009 (I believe).
Any help is welcomeHello,
Thank you for all your replies.
Linc Davis- I was not using Yosemite before the upgrade I was using which ever operating system was before that and it was running fine.
Etresoft- I have downloaded Etresoft and the results are as follows:

Yosemite 10.10.3 made my MacBook Pro extremely slow
I upgraded to 10.10.3 this evening and have spent the last 5 hours struggling with my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011).
I have enough memory (16GB RAM) on the computer, and yet everything is slow as molasses and the Beach ball is having a field day.
Initially, nothing was working - Finder, Safari, Photos, Preview, etc. After digging through various forums and following various tips, I can at least post this message from the MacBook.
iCloud is one huge offender. Turning it off has helped a bit but I am still dealing with far far more sluggish response compared to the pre-upgrade performance. Digging around all the apps to turn off iCloud sync-ing is not my idea of fun. Photos, Preview, Safari, etc. were all trying to put data into the cloud.
Simple operations in Photos (like Export for under 10 photos) are still taking for ever, and then crashing. My library file is about 33GB in size. [This whole idea of creating Library files instead of keeping the photos in folders on the file system never made sense to me. Who needs the headache of over-bloated and prone-to-corruption libraries?]
If I wanted all that cloud functionality (by default), I'd have bought a Chromebook.Did all the things you suggested. The system is still very slow, although Activity Monitor indicates that the CPU and memory utilization is very low. With the new Photos, I deleted everything from the Library, and yet the app is sluggish and clicks on the menu bar still bring the beach ball.
Lastly, ran EtreCheck.
The log is included below. I note 29 errors on the disk, although when I did the Disk Repair last night, it was able to successfully repair the one or two errors it found (directory count was off by one, etc.).
Any further tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, in advance.

Yosemite has made my MacBook unbearably slow
Hi there,
Like other Mac users I have found my MacBook Pro has become so slow it is virtually unusable since installing Yosemite. I installed it several days ago and the problem has not resolved. I have run EtreCheck in the hope that someone might be able to spot the problem. I would really appreciate some advice on how to bring my machine back to a reasonable speed. Presumably Apple will be working on a fix, given how many people have this problem??
Problem description:
Since I installed the new Yosemite OS my MacBook Pro has virtually ground to a halt. Everything is so slow the machine is now almost unusable - rather like dial-up connection days of old. I’d love to be able to fix this!

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -
Macbook Pro 2011: slow after yosemite upgrade
Hi,
I recently upgraded to yosemite, and during the installation, the installation bar stopped at about halfway and stayed there for hours. Knowing that it was going nowhere, I powered the computer down and turned it on again. After this, the installation appeared to be completed because it let me actually use the computer, but it was painfully slow. So I redownloaded yosemite and tried to reinstall it. However, the installation got stuck at the same spot, and another manual reset resulted in use of the computer, albeit at a snail's pace.
So I tried to reset the PRAM, then i tried starting in safe mode, then i tried booting normally, none of which worked. After reading on these forums, I found out about Etrecheck, I was able to download it and ran it yesterday. Here are the results:

Please and thank you for your help. I am currently writing ~2 words before the loading wheel comes up and stops me from typing for about 10 seconds. There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive or other storage device to hold the data.
1. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
If you use FileVault 2, then you must first unlock the startup volume. Select its icon ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. Enter your login password when prompted.
2. If Method 1 fails because of disk errors, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
3. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
4. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data. -
Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.
I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable. I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help. My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution. Need help.
SIgned,
YoseMighty SlowProblem description:
MacBook Pro (mid 2012) is running super slow since I upgraded to Yosemite. Used CleanMyMac2 and freed up 22G. Verified and repaired disk permissions. Re-installed Yosemite and still, it is running dead slow. Windows take between 45-60 seconds to open, files are slow to appear…generally just slow and unresponsive.

MacBook Pro 2011 slow at low battery
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and when the battery gets to around 15% all applications seem to slow down. After about a minute of being plugged in everything runs smoothly again. Is this normal? Is it just trying to save power by slowing down processors?
I should have been more explicit. My intent was not to suggest the the MBP should be connected to the AC outlet 100% of the time. If conditions permit, use the AC connection, if not use it under battery power. If you have had the MBP connected to the AC outlet for 4-6 weeks, then do disconnect it and run it with battery power to a 30% - 40% discharge level and the proceed with a charge back up to 100%.
All batteries deteriorate and discharge over the course of time regardless of whether they are being used or not. Chronological maximum battery life will be achieved by minimal to moderate battery usage. I have a replaceable battery in my old MBP that is about 4 years old and is and is a 91% health. The newer MBP has the original battery and in 19 months of usage is at 96% health. I may not achieve the number of cycles that Apple advertises, but I am confident that I will get at least 5+ years service from them.
Certainly there may be situations where an AC connection is not readily available and the cycle count will accumulate quickly and the battery life will be shortened as a consequence. (ex. a student in classroom environment) Such situations are the reason why we have battery powered MBPs, but if you discharge a battery totally every day, it will need to be replaced well within three years of service.

Yosemite has made my macbook air unusable
This seems to be a software set that chokes this computer (Air. 11") Are
Greetings John Kernan,
It sounds like Yosemite may be working slower than expected for you. To begin troubleshooting, I would suggest reading over and working through the attached article.

Macbook Pro 2011 slowed significantly to the point of unusable.
At first I deleted Gigabytes worth of unused songs, movies, documents, etc. No change. Did disk repair and disk permissions repair.
Kernel_task was taking up 560% of CPU. Backed up HD and did a factory reset. This stopped the kernel_task but was still slow. Reset PRAM and SMC. A little faster but still slow. Any other fixes I should try? I should also mention the battery is shot but I don't know if that would affect speed. Have re-tried disk permissions repair. I paid for the update to mountain lion. It began to slow sometime after that. It was then later updated to Mavericks and an unknwon amoutn of time afterwards became unusable. Now it's back to 10.6AlyGShow wrote:

If the OSX does not detect a functional battery it will throttle the CPU.
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set %CPU to display values from high to low. Post an image.

Macbook pro 2011 slow to sleep after upgrade from SL to Maveriks
Hi
i have a problem...after upgrade to Mav. (from the app store) my computer need 50+ sec to go to sleep mode. why?
i search for the causes here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776 but nothing.....
i think that the only way is by terminal with "pmset -g log" but i don't understand.I have noticed this exact same issue last night/today. I upgraded last night as well.
I have been chatting with apple support and have tried Safe boot, SMC reset, PRAM/NVRAM reset, testing on a new user account.
Nothing seems to be fixing it, is it a known OS issue. As having a mechanical HDD with a sleep time of 30 seconds is potentially a problem.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard which had a shutdown/sleep time of a 1-2 seconds. I'm considering going back to Snow Leopard.

ITunes 5 or 6 will not add a pre-recorded CD to the Source List. It flashes the CDDB window up for a second...then nothing. The OS labels it "Audio CD" on the desktop. I have re-installed the OS and iTunes and blown the prefs...same result.
