Yosemite has ruined performance of my 3-year-old iMac with freezes, application shutdowns and more. What can I do?

Since installing Yosemite my iMac frequently freezes, particularly when I have multiple windows open/apps running. I've never had this problem before. All my apps are installed on a solid-state drive and all documents, etc. on a separate drive, so I'm accustomed to fast performance. Most problems seem to occur with Microsoft Office (Word and Entourage) and Safari, but that's what I use most heavily, so no surprise. I have always been able to keep a lot of apps/windows open on desktop without performance problems, until now. Yosemite is leaving me stranded. (I upgraded to Yosemite because a couple of the newest apps I use on my two Macs and iPhone require Yosemite.) Any advice?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Will Mountain Lion work on my 4 year old iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo   Processor Speed:     2.66 GHz

Will Mountain Lion work on my 4 year old iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 2.66 gHz.
Really do not want to load it and find there are issues.
Oh I really not a big tech guy I just want everything to work well.
And I'm just about to purchase a Mac Book Pro as well.
Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated
    Cheers

I also have a 4 year old iMac 24". it is the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo. I have been running Mountain Lion since it was released, and before that Lion. Runs great. Over the last month I have noticed some slow data transfers from a USB harddrive. But not enough to do any research. I use a USB harddrive for my Time Machine backup and notice no problems or slow transfers while the Time Machine backup runs. My iTunes has its nedia files on a USB harddrive and is used to watch videos, play music and share photos on the AppleTV. I also use Aperture on the iMac to store and manage 20,000 photos.
I have 6 GB of ram, 4GB and 2GB memory sticks. I know it is best to have identical ram sticks but my iMac model cannot run 8GB of ram and I feel 6GB is better than 4GB.
Mountain Lion is a great OS and I am glad I upgraded. It works great with the AppleTV (no airplay but iTunes on the iMac serves up all our music, photos and videos), iPhone, and iPod Touch. Also with my wifes brand new Macbook Pro. All the devices including the iMac can share data on iCloud.

  • I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8

    I've a ten year-old iMac, with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 & PowerPC G5 processor
Problem is iTunes, reinstalled recently as 10.6.3; saying needs QuickTime 7.5.5 or higher.

the iTunes 10.6.3 was installed a few days ago by the same tech person selling me the computer about two years ago, when the OS was reinstalled including iTunes.  I've not been able to make iTunes work since the computer was returned.
The tech person is busy and will get back to me eventually, so I'm trying to see if I can do anything by myself.  This shouldn't of happened, though everyone makes mistakes; is what I'm guessing?

    L.S.
I switched to Maverick on my 4 year old iMac. At first the program Maverick slowed down te activity speed. After changing datafiles to an external drive it works oké now. No problems untill now.
Recent I needed Adobe Flash Player, which is downloaded in the most recent version on my iMac, for starting a program for showing results. The program doesn't start, I had to download the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player.
No result - Testing - downloading - removing cookies - restarting - downloading and installing again, etc.
Testing the Flash Player on YouTube the problem results in the same problem.
The software on my iMac is up to date.

  • Restore keeps asking for my wife's previous, 5 year old, no longer remembered, Apple ID password. What can I do?

Gen 3 iPad went into "Recovery" mode while updating to 8.0.2. requiring a "Restore."  iPad is now in it's 17th hour of trying to restore and recover all data backed up in cloud and on MacBook Pro.  Odd think - I keep being asked for a password my wife had on her first iPad, one associated with an email provider with haven't used in over 5 years.  We have no recollection of that old password.  What can I do?

First, the iPad should not take 17 hours to restore. Perhaps if your wifi was extremely slow, but if you're restoring from a backup made to the computer, it should take no more than 20 minutes or so. I would be inclined to start again - connect to iTunes, click Restore within iTunes, and go from there.
The only time an AppleID would get in the way of restoring is if it was used to set the Find My iPad feature. If this is the case, you're going to have to recover access to the AppleID. Start here:

  • HT3680 My 3 year old iMac is freezing and I get a message "startup disk almost full for running applications. delete files..." Where do I find the startup disk and what should I delete?

My 3 year old Mac is having trouble and freezes up from time to time lately. I get a message saying "startup disk almost full, delete files ..." something about having enough room for applications to function.  I know my startup disk is the Macintosh HD, but what kind of files do I need to delete and how much space do I need to free up?  In my "about this mac" area, it says I have 4.89gb free out of 319.21  So I am confused why I need to do this.

You're less than 2% free and should always have at least 15% (my SWAG). Best is to get an ext FWHD and move stuff from the startup disk to it and delete it from that. Best things to move are movies, music, and photos, using the apps that manage those things.

  • 1 year old iMac with issue

This is my first Apple computer, and up until now - over a year, never had issue.  For past week, having trouble with closing programs on the red close button, or deleting emails on those buttons, or typing into a web browser, or entering on a submit button... When I place the mouse on these areas immediately a pop up occurs from the "tool bar options" for example - "cutomizie toolbar" will show, or a box that states "icon & text, icon only, text only".  It is not always the same pop up but several differnt ones.  I can't seem to figure out why.  It allows you to not be able to close out at that or enter information? The buttons become useless.   It occurs probably 75 percent of the time.  I am not inadvertently hitting something different with the mouse.  It seems like some sort of bug?  Is there a program I can run to diagnose or find it, or do I need to take it to a repair shop?

The gray area above the window is called the toolbar and if you right click on it you'll get the option to Customize. So one of two things are happening: 1) your finger is straying over to the right side of the mouse (easy to do with the magic mouse) or 2) you have a mouse problem.

Amazing the new 27 inch I mac has no built in dVD player. Bit like buying a brand new car and finding it doesnt have any doors.

Great analogy - particularly applicable to folks who would buy a new car without looking at it, never mind taking it for a test drive.

  • My 6 year old iMac is freezing frequently and I have random weird display spots - any suggestions?

I'm having issues with my desktop Mac - I took it to apple and they ran a diagnostic and said it was fine.  The screen has frequently appearing inconsistencies like weird little sections of random colors and now the whole thing is freezing frequently.  I have approx 60 gb free and I'm running 10.7.3 with no odd software or especially labor intensive programs other than iPhoto.
Any ideas are more than welcome!

  • My 5-year old iMac is freezing up and will not reboot unless it is turned off for an hour or so.  What is going on?

After some heavy lifting ( backing up or working in several applications) the system will slow down to a crawl and then freeze.  A hard shutdown and restart will usually not reboot it.  I typically get a white screen with a floder with a ? mark on it, a circle with a line through it, an Apple logo with a spinning wheel for many hours (I let it go overnight once to no avail), or a simple white screen.   The disk checks out fine with Drive Genius and disk usility, from both the hard disk (when I can get it running) and from the Disk utilite and Drive Genius Disks.    I have erased (zeroed out) the disk and reinstalled Snow Leopard several times with all updates.  Reparied permissions successfully.  It runs swimmingly until I start loading up files and try to use them or tao back up to Time Machine on a Time Capsule.   It will then repeat the whole scenario.   Often, If I leave it shut down for an hour or two, or overnight, it will boot fine, even after all of the prior white screens.
I have taken it to the Genius Bar a coupole of times, and they have done a system reinstall and analysis to no avail.   Everything looks fine.  Infact, ast time it had rested and while it did not boot before I left, it did fine there.
The only devices connected are an ethernet cable, bluetooth mouse, and keyboard.  What's up?
I think this is a hardware not a software issue.

BankerDad, let's see if we can change this device's behavior. Is there any physical or liquid damage on that device? Connect it to a charger to see if the charging battery icon populates on the screen. Keep us posted.

  • I have a 6 year old computer with 512MB of RAM and I am worried that if I upgrade from 3.6 to 8.0 Firefox will be too slow.

Should I keep using 3.6 for as long as possible? I have been very happy with Firefox 3.6. I have a Compaq Presario computer.

My opinion is to get more RAM. I found 512MB to be too little for Firefox '''3''', and I rarely have multiple windows open and rarely more that 10 tabs open.
Try Firefox Portable first, and then if the Portable works to your satisfaction think about about upgrading to 8.0. Firefox Portable won't mess with your current Firefox installation, it installs completely separate. <br />

As far as Firefox 3.6 goes, it will probably be around for another 5 months or so as a currently supported version, as far as security updates are concerned.

  • 3 Month old laptop performing like its 7 years old

    Hi
My HP notebook is 3 months old but is performing like it is 7 years old.  It is extremely "laggy" and struggling to perform even the simplest of tasks.  I am constantly getting the "not responding" dialogue at top of screen and the mouse curser lags and jolts.  I am not a gamer nor do I download movies or music.  It is only ever used for browsing.    I have done several whole computer scans and found no viruses or malware.  I did a number of system restores, but to no avail.  I then did a "refresh" using the update and recovery section of my pc.  Unfortunately this has not helped.
Has anyone any suggestions as to why this woud be happening? It is still under warranty as only 3 months old and to be honest I just want it gone.  I'm now back to using my old Asus which is 5 years old and performing light years ahead of the HP.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?
