Yosemite has slowed indesign down!

Oh my word - I have indesign CC and it craps out several times a day since I upgraded to yosemite!! I have to restart my laptop several times a day which is slowing down my workflow significantly. I have plenty of ram and had very few issues with mavericks. I've alos uninstalled and reinstalled.
Does anyone know a trick/fix?

The great majority of us have no such speed problems with InDesign in Yosemite, including me.
I'd agree with Bob that sometimes an in-place update to a new OS doesn't work correctly. If you want to solve it:
(1) Do a complete backup of your computer (always!)
(2) Follow the instructions Bob provided
(3) Reinstall Creative Cloud applications, including InDesign.

I'm gonna jump in as I have similar issues with Yosemite.
My two old white MacBooks run perfect with Snow leopard, but my 2011 17" i7 Macbook Pro is a dead slug with yosimite installed.
Tried the start with C held down, also with option held down.  All it does is beeps at me three times, then again three times.....
I want to remove yosimite and install Snow leopard from dvd as yosimite runs worse than a Windows OS.
Can it be done, what do I need to do please?
Examples of faults,  even with a 1tb solid state drive and 16 gig of ram, it is incredibly slow.  Took four hours to install Logic 8 last night, I still have to reinstall logic 9 upgrade.   On the White MacBooks I got both 8 and 9 installed in under an hour and a half all up.
Beeping on startup means failed RAM.
Slowness is usually caused by incompatible third-party system modifications.

  • It has slowed everything down without any add ons, how do i fix it?

As soon as i downloaded firefox 4 it slowed everything down, i don`t have any add ons, it doesn`t remember all my security settings like passwords or even my name?
I have to keep writing everything in all the time wherever i go or whatever i do.
I`m paying for broadband but i`m not getting it`s speed, it`s very annoying and frustrating when firefox 4 says it`s faster and safer, not on my laptop it`s not?
It will complete almost everything eventually, but it`s painfully slow?
I`ve only got 10meg speed but it`s taking between 1 and 5 minutes to do anything?
I`m only using my laptop for normal stuff like gmail email, eBay, banking, etc.
I don`t use it for games or facebook or porn or anything like that, just basic stuff?
It`s slow all the time for everything?

  • Yosemite has slowed my computer to a crawl.  Need Help!!

Since installing Yosemite, my computer has been extremely slow. Firevault has been "encrypting data" for over 10 days and when i do "diskutil cs list" on the terminal it says it is 15% done. It has been at that point for over 7 days.  Any ideas? Can I reinstall Yosemite and start over?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
Enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.

  • Need speed. OS X.4 has slowed me down (I think)

Firstly, I do not understand most of this computer jargon so excuse my lame attempt at trying to describe what I'm looking for.
I'm wondering if increasing my RAM will speed up my mac. I'm mainly using Adobe CS2 apps and my computer has turned into a slug. I usually need all 4 apps open (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat) as well as my font managing app. I've read that my max. RAM cap. is 4 GB but I've also read it's only 2 GB.
Can I increase my processor speed? How? What are these PCI Express Lanes that I'm reading about and do I have them?
I can see all sorts of slots inside my computer but don't really know if they can help me. I'd appreciate any time and help anyone has to give.
    1.6 GHz PowerMac G5/ 800 MHz/ 1.25 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Using mainly CS2 apps
    1.6 GHz PowerMac G5/ 800 MHz/ 1.25 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Using mainly CS2 apps

Generally if you are working with 200mb files you need over a gig of ram minimum to get any decent speed.
Bear in mind OSX ***** around 512mb, so you need. 1.5gig total minimum.
Single processor can handle much more than 200mb when you start getting up to over 2gig of RAM (Photoshop CS max is 2GIG then you have to allow for system etc) so ideally if you had 2-3 gig you'd get good performance.
I use a dual core 2.3gig with 3.5gig of ram, handling files up to 1.5gig+. I find mine opens 200mb almost instantly.
The points above are very true. If your Mac is running out of Ram and having to access the hard drive to help it along, it slows the machine. This is because whilst its trying to use the hard drive ti suuplement the ram, its also trying to read or write the file you are saving/opening, to the same drive, and run the system, so quite alot of information flying back and forth. Remember the hard drive can only read or write one batch of info at a time as the needle flies across the disc.
On a single processor machine, to maximise performance the above idea of the second hard drive will help separate the read write from the scratch disc.
The extra RAM will then take the strain off the whole lot. Ram is fast access memory and can be accessed in a fraction of the time as a spinning hard drive which has to go and find the info.
The graphics cards in the first Macs were only low end 5200's and could do with an upgrade but you'd be best investing your money into the Ram first then hard drive second.

  • Connecting to the update has been connecting for more than 6 hourand is still trying to connect when will it finish downloading the suggested update?s, why? This update has slowed me down way too much.

A window opened when I started that said " We strongly suggest that you update......" I did not want to but each time I turned my computer on the same window pops up with the "strongly suggest" and my computer began to run slower and stop lot. So I finally pressed the bar for more information..But never got any. My computer continued to keep "stop script" and run slow. So after several days of this I clicked on "Next" to download the update and it has been" Connecting to the update server" for over 6 hours now and still running little green boxes in a frame over and over and over. Why is this happening?

My huge annoyance is how Preview converts ai, .eps and .ps files to .pdf files.
It has progressively deteriorated from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard.
In Leopard it defaulted to saving the .pdfs to the Documents folder not the place of origin and would regularly crash if more than a few (sometimes just 2) files were opened simultaneously.
In Snow Leopard nothing was fixed and now the names are stripped off the converted files so that they are all called Untitled.
Apple must have received hundreds of bug reports (I diligently sent one every time Preview crashed) and several feedbacks detailing the problem, to the point I believe persecuting Designers and ruining their work has become a NEXT programmers secret objective.
Except for a couple of minor bug fixes to do with drag & drop in Preview, I am puzzled where the so-called improvements in Snow Leopard really benefit user.

  • Lightroom 3 Slowing Waaay Down?

    Howdy!
I am an Apple Aperture user and thinking about switching to Lightroom.  I downloaded the trail version and have 15 days left before I have to decide weather to buy it or not.  So far all was going really great and I was convinced I needed it, until this evening when I started editing more images from a recent photoshoot.  For some reason Lightroom has slowed waaaay down.  I haven't installed anything new on my Mac, everything was working great previously so I am not sure what to even try and troubleshoot.  My images are from a Canon 40D (or XTi) each about 10gig and all are RAW.
So far I have only imported 2116 images and if I convert my currrent Aperture library, it as 40k images I would want to move over.  Of the images I have imported I have only 235 in this current folder, about 60 of those I have edited on.  Some I have done some pretty extensive editing clearing up skin using a combination of the skin smoother and heal tools.  A few have some artistic work on them and only a couple have I sent to an external editor to do manipulation.  I have added one plugin to Lightroom LRB timelapse, and would like to add more for my Photoshelter account and more editing options.
My MacBook is running Lion, 10.7.1, has dual core 2.4 processors, 4 gigs of Ram and a 500 terribyte 7200rpm drive.  I use an external 22 inch Acer monitor.
What should I try to recover the performance of Lightroom 3?

    David
Can you just confirm something? You say each image is 10Gig do you mean 10Mb? You asls say you have a 500 Terrabite Hard Drive? Surely you mean 500Gb??
Check disk free disk space, you may find things are slowing because you are running out of virtual RAM (which is basically hard disk space)
I would not consider copying over all your photos again into LR. I too have Aperture and moved over to LR about 18 months ago. As a Manchester Photographer I simply find the support in the photography industry superior and most professional photographers have opted for Lightroom, although I do use Aperture on occasion for certain projects.
Lightrooms catalogues you images and leaves the originals in their orignal location
    Regards
    Darren

Since the update to Yosemite the MacBook has slowed down appreciably. Safari for example takes upwards of 30 seconds to load. How can I speed things up?

    Hi ..
Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?
Check to see if the startup disk needs repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important data first before using OS X Recovery.
Anti virus software, as well as third party Mac cleaning utilities such as MacKeeper  and CleanMyMac can also slow your Mac down.
    For Safari.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari to test. if that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

All the com.apple stuff in red can't be good.
First: you need a backup. Then:
I would boot into the recovery partition (restart and hold down ⌘ R until you see the apple logo) and use disk utility to repair your HD. Repair permissions while you are there too.
I'd also get rid of the google keystone agent, which is a frequent flyer here for slowing macs down.
Then restart and see how things are.
If that doesn't fix it then I'd reinstall Yosemite over the current installation.
If that doesn't fix it then you probably need to start over with a clean install (i.e., backup your documents, erase your HD, and reinstall everything from scratch).

  • Yosemite upgrade slowing down my Macbook

Hi - I recently upgraded to Yosemite OS X and it has slowed down my Macbook (2011 model, 2Gb RAM). Everything runs painfully slow - booting up, opening any applications, opening Chrome, Thunderbird - EVERYTHING. Its been suggested I add RAM but not being a techie Mac user i havent a clue how to do that and not really sure i want to throw more RAM at an old-ish machine. I read on the forum about EtreCheck and am hoping this report may help me get some answers?
    Thanks

I would replace the 2GB with a 4 GB to make 8 GB, but you don't have to.

  • My mid 2011 MacBook Air has slowed down significantly overnight?

Last night my MacBook Air was working fine.
When I went to use it this morning, it has slowed down significantly. It takes awhile for it to respond to trackpad movement or the keyboard. Opening finder is delayed now, opening any app is delayed now. Booting it back up takes extra long now, probably around a minute compared to thirty seconds before.
I've tried an SMC reset, repairing the disk and repairing disk permissions.
From what I can see, the hardware doesn't appear to be failing, but I could be wrong.
Can anyone help me out? What could possibly be going on with my MacBook? How did this happen overnight?

Your MacBook Air's memory is not upgradable, and as you already determined unused storage capacity is not a relevant factor.
There are many reasons a Mac may be performing slower than expected.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
To identify potential hardware problems: Apple Hardware Test.

  • New Mac has slowed down dramatically

My mac is only a few weeks old and I have noticed that it has slowed down dramatically. It takes quite awhile for programs to load. The fill-in boxes are not keeping up with my typing and it is getting quite annoying. I am new to Imac, so I am not sure how to go about checking the processing speed, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

It does not. First things first have you tried restarting?
    Try restting PRAM

Try booting up in Safe Mode

Also open "activity monitor" and look and see what is using a lot of processing power.
