Yosemite install has messed up my home folder after fixing user short name.

I just installed Yosemite 10.10.2 onto a new Mac Pro, replacing 10.9.5.  After the installation completed, I allow my iCloud settings the set things up for Mail and my other general account settings.  The only issue is that when I changed my short name from timjones to tjones, auto correct changed it to tones (as it has done in this post 2 times).  Once I recognized this, I used the normal method for modifying a user account by logging in under another admin account, using ditto to copy the '/Users/tones' folder to '/Users/tjones', selecting the Tim Jones account in Users and Groups and using the Advanced Options to reset the short name to tjones.  I then reassigned the home folder to /Users/tjones.
All seemed to go well and when I logged back in as tjones.  However, I could no longer set up my preferences for apps nor could I access my mail.  I then clicked on the 'tjones' home folder in Finder and was greeted with a dialog that said 'Preparing to duplicate items to "Users"'.  It then spun for around 2 minutes and prompted me for my password.  I entered it and the dialog changed to 'Duplicating 0 items to "Users"' and it's now been spinning for around 15 minutes.
What is this and am I back at square one and reinstalling (I have good backups...)?

The "Duplication" finished finally and my home folder has now disappeared from the /Users folder in Finder.  If I check in a Terminal, there are now 2 folders - 'tjones' which is set to tjones:wheel and 'tjones copy' which is set to tjones:admin.  As mentioned, neither is visible in Finder.

  • The Home folder is still in the name of the previous owner.

    Hello.
I have recently purchased a second hand iMac.The Home folder is still in the name of the previous owner and I keep getting asked for his passwords. All his applications are still on there, so I would like to do a clean install and start again. Lion was already installed so I do not have any discs to re-install. How do I do that without any discs etc?
    I appreciate your help.

You are in a bit of a jam. You cannot reinstall Lion because you do not have the previous owner's Apple ID and password which would be needed. You have to buy your own copy of Lion. If you don't already own a copy of the Snow Leopard DVD then you must purchase the Snow Leopard DVD from Apple's Online Store - $29.00, install it and update it to 10.6.8 to access the Mac App Store. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password, purchase and download the Lion installer - $30.00. Or go to your local Apple retailer and purchase the Apple USB Flash Drive Lion installer - $69.00 that you can then use to erase the drive and install. This latter option is your only alternative if the computer came with Lion pre-installed.
The Lion license is not transferrable because it is associated with the purchaser/owner's Apple ID.

  • How to replace home folder after yosemite erase-reinstall?

Hi, I did an erase-reinstall and then simply copied my backed-up home folder (administrator's home folder) back into the new home folder but this has not worked well. Can anyone tell me the correct procedure of how to restore the home folder. I have a Time Machine back-up from a previous online Yosemite install (not an erase-install) as well as a regular back-up on a separate drive. Can I fix this up (i.e. remove the whole current home folder and replace it properly) without doing another erase-install of yosemite? Many thanks, Barak

baltwo, out of interest, I just found this at:  http://www.theinstructional.com/guides/how-to-re-run-the-os-x-setup-assistant

Under certain circumstances, it can be advantageous to re-run the Setup Assistant. Using some command-line trickery, we can do just this without having to erase and reinstall OS X...

  • Install Boot Camp Partition without Home Folder

    Hello!
I have a Early 2011 MacBook Pro and wish to install Windows 8.1 using Boot Camp. The problem is I have replaced my optical drive with another hard drive (to be specific I replaced my HDD with an SSD then the optical drive with the HDD). With my Mac model it isn't possible to install Windows with a USB (I have tried :/). My current plan is to put my optical drive back in (because you can't use an external optical drive) and install Windows to a partition of the SSD. The trouble is my Home folder is on the HDD, which I need to remove.
What is the best thing to do? Can I boot up OSX and install Windows without my home folder? Should I temporarily move my home folder? Should I create a new temporary user? Or is there some hack that will actually work that doesn't require opening up my Mac again?
Thanks in advance for any response, Phil.

Is there software that I can install or something special I can do to install windows in a way that it won't be able to access the files on the Mac side? I don't want the security risks of windows getting through to the Mac bit. So, is there something that can out up a barrier between the two?
The choice to install Windows is an invitation to security risks. It does not mean OS X does not have its own security risks. All OSes do. Windows has more widespread malware, viruses, etc. Windows has read-only access via Apple HFS+ driver to OS X volumes (this is installed as part of Bootcamp Drivers package).
    You have two choices,
    1. Install FileVault2 - OS X: About FileVault 2 - Apple Support.
    2. Convert your HFS+ volumes to CoreStorage. See the help about diskutil cs convert. Please also see https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/diskutil.8.html
    diskutil cs convert
    Usage:  diskutil coreStorage convert
            MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
            [-stdinpassphrase | -passphrase [passphrase]]
Convert a regular JHFS+ partition into a CoreStorage logical volume.
The file system must be mounted and resizable (i.e. Journaled HFS+).
Ownership of the affected disk is required.
Either method removes read-only access to OS X side.

  • Rename original home folder after Set Up

I just set up a brand new Pro in a computer lab. I installed Adobe Master Collection, Final Cut, ProTool, etc. It took days....
I then discovered I had (stupidly) named the original Home Folder incorrectly during set up. Can I rename the Home Folder without screwing up all the software serial numbers and activation codes. I have already changed it to the name I want in the Sharing Preferences but my little house still has the original name. It also wants me to type the original Admin. name. I'm not the only Administrator so this is going to lead to confusion.

There might be some permissions issues with the name change. Unfortunately, I do not recall whether I changed the name of a user home folder or used the migration assistant to transfer things to a different user account, but I wound up having to clean up a lot of permissions problems so be sure to check that out before you turn it over to the intended user.
Good Luck with the Adobe apps. Some of them just do not take kindly to any sort of change.

  • Rescuing my home folder by creating a new name

    Please, I need help.
For the longest time my home folder was called, "Pappa Moosie".  That's right: two caps and a space. Everything worked fine, but within the last few months my browsers got wonky, and things started crashing. I tried a backup and a reinstall, but still having problems. Now I can't access my home folder because of the irregularity of the naming of it. Can you give me a way (step-by-step preferred: I'm an older gent) to change the name of my home folder from "Pappa Moosie" to "pappamoosie"?
My system is really a mess right now. Thank goodness for my iPad.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't think that's your problem, you should look here for fixes

  • Importing Home Folder after new hard drive and Lion Update

    (Okay, long title.)
Had to replace my hard drive. Was running Tiger.
Backed up my entire Home Folder only, on an external harddrive, before it failed completely.
Hard drive replaced, and then loaded Snow Leopard, updated to latest version, 10.6.8.
    Ready now to get Lion.
    Questions:
    - After I install Lion do I simply use the "Transfer Information to This Mac" feature to bring in my Home folder?
    - What about the apps that are duplicated, such as Mail, Safari, iCal, etc. Will that be taken care of on its own?
    - What about the iLife apps, GarageBand, iPhoto, etc.? Will I be able to update those to the latest versions?
    Thank you.

If the username and password combo is identical, then you'll need to unhide the new hidden user's Library folder, then open both home folders and transfer you're stuff. Do note that you might get you can't do that messages. For those items, move the new ones into a newly created Desktop folder, and then you should be able to copy the Tiger ones. Once done, restart so the copied stuff is put into RAM and is available for your other steps, such as reinstalling the apps.

  • Home folder for AD users?

I'm upgrading the servers from 10.6.8 to 10.7.. am running some testing before i do the final upgrade, i have noticed something.. I couldn't assign home folder for Active directory users.. I'm running Mac OSX 10.7.2
The Open Directory server is bound to Active directory server and when i open the Server app, and under users.. I clicked on + sign to add users and select the type as "imported user from another directory".. I can see all the active directory users and i can import them but then it doesn't allow me to create home folder for them.. while it works fine for the open directory users..
This what perfectly working under 10.6.8 but not under 10.7.2, unless there is a work around that I dont know about..
    Any idea ?

    Hi,
Could still do with trying to work out if this is possible. If anyone has any ideas / suggestions it would be much appreciated.

  • Problem: securely erasing home folder after enabling file vault

I enabled file vault. It took 4 days (125 GB) to "securely erase home folder", then when it finally reached 100% I got an error message that it could not be erased after all. I also now got an icon on the desktop (protected house) showing my home folder. Anybody experience with this? What do I do to securely erase? What can I do to speed it up? I have 4GB RAM and a HD of 500GB

    open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
    At the prompt type:
    diskutil secureErase freespace 0 /
    (press return)
This will secure erase free space on your boot volume.
    Level "0" (zero) is a Single-pass zero-fill erase. Levels 0 through 4 are supported.
Here is a full description of the different erase levels: 0 - Single-pass zero-fill erase.
    A. 1 - Single-pass random-fill erase.
    B. 2 - US DoD 7-pass secure erase.
    C. 3 - Gutmann algorithm 35-pass secure erase.
    D. 4 - US DoE algorithm 3-pass secure erase.
for more info (in Terminal) type:
    man diskutil
    (press return)
This should take considerably less time than 4 days. On my Mac Pro with 162GB boot volume,
130GB free (I keep my data on a different volume) it takes about 10 minutes using level "0".
Disk Free Space Warnings are normal during operation and can be ignored.
more info about it from apple support:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24002
You can invoke the erase procedure from Disk Utility GUI interface, but it usually is quicker
    when run from terminal.

I was trying to rename my home folder I then restart my computer and now all my stuff are gone. Can anyone help?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /Users/ as the path, and move the files to your current home folder. Alternatively, open the Accounts or Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, unlock it, control-click your account, choose Advanced Options, and change the path to the home folder.

  • Restoring previous home folder after turning off FileVault

    HI Folks,
I turned FileVault on a long time ago and because of its size didn't turn it off before upgrading to Leopard. After the upgrade, it became obvious that FileVault had to go--it was occupying essentially the whole hard drive and spotlight didn't work. I searched out some instructions on how to work around FV to make space and found this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1974?viewlocale=en_US.
I followed the instructions to the letter except when I got the part where it says "Copy files from the disk image to your new account," I ran into trouble. Thinking it wasn't that big a deal, telling myself I could solve the issue later, I proceeded to nuke enough files in my original user account to give FV the room it needed to turn off. This included (stupid me) my LIbrary folder. When enough space was created, FV turned off and spotlight now works fine.
I won the battle but lost the war... That's because in Leopard, unlike Tiger (for which the instructions were written), you can't simply "Highlight all items in the sparse disk image and drag them into your new account's home folder." Not allowed.
I have everything safely stored on my handy external drive but other than transferring folder by folder, is there any other way to restore my home folder? Is there some super-secret workaround or is this the cautionary tale to all you other folks out there (like we need to hear it again): don't get impatient and pay attention to which operating system the instructions were written for. Tiger's troubleshooting articles are not interchangeable with Leopard's.
Hope I am saving someone else some grief by airing my tale of woe.
    Best wishes,
    T

  • Can not login after changing account short name and home directory

    Hi,
I did sth rather stupid while trying a get timemachine working on my iMac 10.5.5.
I changed the short name, login shell and home directory of my account. (didn't listen to the waning that I may not be able to login if I change those information Now I can not log into my account anymore. I tried to use fileVault master password to change the password of my account, but it didn't help. Can anyone tell me how do I fix this problem?
    Thanks a lot!

No, I still can not log in as that user.
I did as you advised, but it gave the following message:
"attache failed, no such file or directory"
then I suspect you may be entering the command incorrectly. another possibility is this. I noticed you said in one of the previous posts that if you cd into the main user home directory you only see user.sparseimage. It actually should be user.sparsebundle. Or have you upgraded to leopard from tiger with filevault turned on? then it could have remained sparseimage rather than sparsebundle.
    run the following in terminal
    sudo ls -la /users/username
    and post the results.
does it list sparsebundle or sparseimage?
Another thing, when I typed in the command, it didn't take the admin (root) password, but the password of the account I was logged in got me through.
that's what it has to be. it takes the password of the user (it jhas to be an admin user) which is currently logged in.
I am wondering if I can recover the problem user's files from the sparseimage file, then copied all the files to a new user.

  • Yosemite install, all folders missing with just folder names show, but can't open.

    Hi
I've just done a clean install for a relative to Yosemite.  It all went well, but I'v noticed all folders on all hard drives are missing.  Just the title of the folder is
showing, but I can't open them where the folder icon would be.
    Any help gratefully appreciated.
    Thanks
    Matt

Do you have a backup you could restore the older version from?
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite
    Revert Yosemite to Mavericks
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • Adobe creative cloud cc install has messed up my Flash Builder 4.6 serialization

    Hello,
I have been a flash builder user for several years now. I have had FB 4.6 installed on my computer as a free upgrade from FB 4.5, which came with my copy of creative suite 5.5, which I purchased in 2011.
FB 4.6 has been working fine - even when I moved to adobe creative cloud last May (2012).
However, now that I have installed the new creative cloud (CC) applications (and uninstalled the creative cloud cs6 apps) - I am having problems with Flash Builder 4.6. I open it and get a message that my 'trial period' is up. Again, I own FB from my purchase of CS 5.5 - not to metion that it was included in creative cloud. I know that I can download FB 4.7 from creative cloud, but it doesn;t have the design view. So I want FB 4.6. I have seen some solutions to similar problems on the web that recommend reinstalling as a trial and then inputting the serial number once it launches. But I have FB 4.5 on my CS 5.5 installation disc - not FB 4.6 - and I'm not even sure how I could get FB 4.6 anymore. Not to mention that uninstalling - reinstalling 4.5 - and then upgrading from 4.5 to 4.6 - even if possible - would be a huge hassle.
Can someone please help me to get my FB 4.6 working again? To reiterate - everything was fine until I installed Creative Cloud CC apps and uninstalled Creative Cloud CS6 apps
    Thanks
