Yosemite Installer App Missing

Am needing to make a bootable disk of Yosemite but can't find the Installer app which should be located in the Applications folder.  I'm using a Dan Frakes/Macworld article as a guide and this is the first step.  Is there a way to download this from somewhere?

Did you install Yosemite on your current boot drive after downloading the installer?  If so then it gets deleted after the installation.  In order to keep a copy of it you need to make a copy of the install app before you continue with the initial installation.
You should be able to go to the Purchases section of the App Store  and download again:

  • How to keep downloaded Yosemite Installer App

RE: Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support (support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372) last modified 2/12/15
Related to the 3 steps beginning with  'Download the OS X Installer app from MAS', my experience (after  many attempts trying different things, including using terminal command, but was unsuccessful with that as well ... I have done this easily with Mavericks so I am somewhat familiar the process, as well) is that the downloaded Yosemite Installer proceeds immediately form installation to bootup, and there is no opportunity to 'grab' the install app before the installer deletes.  Like moving it to Utilities folder or renaming it.  Seems that with Mavericks, you would get booted in, and the installer would leave the App alone, until the first time you use the installer to install on another volume,  at which time the file gets deleted unless you have previously moved or renamed it. Would appreciate your thoughts. Probably me overlooking something, but have run out of ideas.
    Running MBP mid-2012 with 10.10.2

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for not responding sooner.  Nothing I tried worked, so finally (duh) contacted Apple tech support who provided these steps:
    (1) Bootup from internal startup volume (I had been booting up from external drive, and Apple tech support said no-no)
    (2) App Store>Purchases>Download OS X Yosemite (i.e., full OS X installer dmg file)
    (3) Logged in as Admin, use Terminal command line:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app
[where ‘volume’ and ‘applicationpath’ obviously must correspond to any changes to name/location of the downloaded dmg file.
    (4) As I remember, took maybe 45-60 minutes to complete creating the bootable installer on thumb drive (needs to be at least 8 GB).

  • Problems with the mac app store login/ yosemite installer download

I am trying to download the yosemite installer from the mac app store, but can't seem to log in. I receive no error message. What could be causing these issues? I am using a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8.

Based on the numerous posts regarding iTunes and the App Store, there appears to be an issue at Apple's end. Although Apple has not provided any indication on the cloud status page.
    Do not change your settings.

  • Where Does Yosemite Installer Hide? (aka missing disk space)

I've been using a 400GB partition on an external drive for Time Machine backups for some time and it's had plenty of room to work with. I upgraded to Yosemite recently and all was well with the Time Machine backups.
Yesterday I downloaded Yosemite again to install it on a second drive so that I would have a second bootable drive. Today I got notice that there was not enough space on my Time Machine backup drive. Suddenly the 400GB was not enough and my primary boot drive had swollen to 480GB. I don't know what it had been, but obviously there is now a lot more on it than there was.
My assumption is that I have the Yosemite Installer and/or hidden installer files that didn't get cleaned up after the second installation. I can't find anything in hidden files or folders that I recognize as such but soemthing is eating up lots of disk space that I need to free.
Where does the App Store stash downloads in case that's it?
If I hold Option on a restart, I no longer have the Installer as an optional boot disk, but I do get three "Recovery-10"... disks. Possibly those are the problem, but I can't locate them either.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Ok, I may have found a possible solution. I found this at stack exchange. It's not the best option and it requires a simple shell command, and will not be able to be used to restore from Time Machine, but for backing up one or more directory, at least in the short term, this will work. Here it is:
There seems to be an issue with Yosemite renaming the computer local host by adding (#) after the computer name. There are other reports of this happening in a thread on MacRumors Forum and I believe a few people have blamed this as a cause of time machine backup failures. I've tried a few of the suggestions in the thread but so far none have worked. I've stopped using time machine for now and reverted to an old bash rsync script.
A really simple solution is to open the terminal and type:
    rsync -avu ~/ /Volumes/backup_disk/backup_folder
replacing 'backup_disk' with the name of your external hard drive and 'backup_folder' with the name of the backup folder i.e.: 'yosemite_backup'. The three flags -avu mean: archive (a) copy the home directory recursively into sub folders, verbose (v) print to the terminal window everything you are copying (feel free to leave this out) and update (u) will only overwrite files that are newer than the archived file (useful after the initial main backup). This solution isn't as hands off as time machine but at least it's a simple way to back up vital information in Documents and Pictures/Videos.
    Hope this helps!

  • Missing Installer App in Nexus1000v for Hyper-V zip

    Hi all!!
I am trying to install a Nexus 1000v for Hyper-V following de documentation, and I have seen that the Installer App supposed to be used to install it is not included in the Nexus1000V5.2.1.SM1.5.2.zip
I've tried to achieve it but it has been impossible. Could anyone upload it?
    Thank you

    Hello,
I don't believe the installer app is available anymore with the new 5.2(1)SM1(5.2).
Have you tried doing the install with the new documentation for 5.2(1)SM1(5.2) which does not reference the installer app?

  • After Upgrade to Yosemite, all apps are slow.

I upgraded to Yosemite  and all applications are slow.  ( as e.g.. starting to type in this box give me beachball for 2 seconds initially) A big difference in speed from Mavericks to Yosemite. Opening system preferences takes 3 seconds to load, and clicking on Users & Groups takes 25 seconds to open.
    I do not have fire vault enabled.  I did a safe boot and some apps did appear to open faster. Also did a repair disk and rebooted.  No change. When Safari is open it takes 5 seconds to open a new window.   I ran EtreCheck and the report is as follows;
Thanks for any help;( After pasting the EtreCheck text file, I clicked on this box to add the Thanks... , it took 2-3 seconds for the beach ball to stop spinning.)

You could do that, but when setting up your new iMac it is a much better idea to transfer only your existing User Accounts. In other words when Setup Assistant appears, de-select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" and "Other files and folders". That way you will eliminate the possibility of reinstalling potentially incompatible software from your existing Mac or its TM backup. It's best to create new printer queues and preferences anyway.
Your venerable HP 1012 will probably work without any difficulty but if you need its driver download it here. If it gives you trouble try OS X's generic PostScript driver.
After configuring your user account, install original versions of your essential software from their original sources. In other words if you installed them via download from the developer's website, download them again. You might need license keys so gather them. Obviously the Mac App Store makes things easy since anything you obtain from there is already linked to your Apple ID and is easily reinstalled by going to your Purchases page.
Don't reinstall things like AppCleaner, CleanMyMac, Western Digital "Smartware" or any of that junk. You don't need it. MacFUSE is outdated. Research Prolific Technology for potential updates for their serial controller. The one you have may work, or not, but you should re-download its driver.
Consider abandoning Microsoft altogether and migrating to better solutions such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. They are all free with a purchase of a new Mac and are far more integrated with OS X than anything Microsoft will ever be able to accomplish.
The Burr-Brown USB device is unknown to me, so research TI's website for support if you need it.
If your essential software was distributed on optical media, you can use OS X's "DVD or CD sharing" feature to remotely mount the older iMac's optical drive so that you can install its software. It will work as though that drive were physically installed on your new Mac. Having said that, anything that was distributed on optical media is highly likely to have been outdated a long time ago.
If your essential software is old, orphaned, no longer supported, or is no longer available, meaning you have the only viable copy, the only option is to transfer it from the TM backup or older Mac. In that case be very cognizant of the likelihood for incompatibility, and have a plan for uninstalling it should it cause adverse effects. Creating a new TM backup is the way to do that. A new external HD dedicated to the new Mac is a cheap investment. When you are certain you no longer require the older Mac's TM backup, you can erase it and use it as an additional, redundant TM backup or "clone" repository – whichever you decide is best for your backup needs.

  • HT201372 The copy of the installer app failed.

I'm trying to create a USB bootable with Yosemite, but the process doesn't complete.
I launched the command from terminal as explained here
    /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/YOSEMITE/ --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app
and I got the following output:
    Ready to start.
To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/YOSEMITE/.
If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: Y
    Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...
    Copying installer files to disk...
The copy of the installer app failed.
Everything goes fine until almost the end. It seems the USB volume is unmounted abruptly because it disappears from the desktop and I got the message asking to eject it before removing it. After that, I get the error that the copy of the installer fails.
I'm running OS X 10.10.1, I downloaded the Yosemite Image from App Store.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program which will do all the work for you.

  • After updating to Yosemite, following apps not opening. App Store, Mail, Contacts, Calendars... About the Mac

    About the Mac
I recently updated to Yosemite and now I am having problems with the above mentioned apps, not opening at all.
I am unable to check to which version its update to, or even update to next version.

You ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanse" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below. If you use any iWork applications, you may need to delete them and redownload them from the App Store.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Error on downloading Yosemite from App Store

This is to open a separate specific issue that was also a problem from creating a Yosemite boot disk on a flash drive.
I had previously downloaded and installed Yosemite from the Apple upgrade site.  I installed it and then my MacBook Pro started to malfunction to an unusable state.  I erased my HD and restore back to my Mavericks - 10.9.5 - backup on Time Machine.  I found that iTunes was now corrupt and want to try to install Yosemite from a clean HD and start over.  So I have created an empty thumb drive with a single partition to use as a bootable drive to do a clean install after wiping the HD.
I now cannot download the Yosemite installer from the App Store though.  I get a popup saying:  "OS X Yosemite failed to download.  Use the Purchases page to try again."  When I go to the Purchases option at the top of the page, I get a new one page listing Yosemite (dated 10/9/2014) with a red message "An error has occurred."  I have tried 3x to download again and no luck.   The history also gives the option of downloading Mavericks (2/25/2014) and has iPhoto (10/20/2014) ready to Install.  In the Application folder it has the Yosemite install icon greyed out with an X at the corner to cancel the install.  Clicking it and confirming cancel of the install, I still get the same download error after.  The download bar under the Application folder is blank, i.e. no progress.
How do I get around this?

Even the ignorant get lucky sometimes, or sometimes they just think they are lucky and will find out soon that they aren't so lucky.  In any case, in my desperation to get my MBP operable again, I seem to have made some progress.  I had been unable to get my first install of Yosemite to work so I ended up reverting back to Maverick via a complete restore from Time Machine.  As noted above I still couldn't get a successful download of either Maverick or Yosemite to use to make a recovery flash drive (in order to wipe my HD and start over).  I thought maybe I could use the built-in recovery disk on my HD to get a clean copy of Mavericks and hopefully that would fix things.  I thought Mavericks would be on the recovery partition (if that's the right term) since I was running a restored Maverick.  I found that the version there was 10.10 - Yosemite even though I was running Maverick  Since I had already used Time Machine to restore to Mavericks I felt comfortable in seeing what would happen if I restored from the Yosemite recovery.  Well - it worked.  It got me up and running and let me download and complete the install of Yosemite.  It now runs smoother then it did before without the spinning beachball of death all the time.  But iTunes will still not launch so I need to figure that out.  And I downloaded the Yosemite Installer which I can use to make a recovery flash drive.

  • "Download the OS X Installer app from the Mac App Store" - where to find it? A search doesn't bring any result...

I want to create a bootable USB drive for Yosemite. The support site suggests to ""Download the OS X Installer app from the Mac App Store" prior the creation. But where to find it in the App store? Any search combination does not bring a meaningful result....
    Thanks guys.

Thanks Matt, understood. It was my fault, just simply thinking, there is an App called "Installer"

  • Missin Installer.app

I was trying to re-install itunes on my computer because my old ipod wasn't appearing on my computer. After downloading the version from apple.com i tried to open it. There is a .mpkg file and a readme file. I know the mpkg file is supposed to look like a box, but on my computer it looks like a piece of paper. After, I was looking to see what was wrong, and the "installer.app" was missing room my utilities folder.
I have no idea where it has gone...what can I do to get it back?
    Thanks

Hi, pkracunas. Welcome to the Discussions.
Before going the "Pacifist" route, and after following Kappy's advice re: searching for it (in case you moved it), note the following:
Files that go missing unexpectedly can indicate a corrupted disk directory. As a general checkup, I suggest you run Steps 1-3 of the Procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ before attempting to reinstall Installer.app.
If it turns out you moved it, put it back in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder (/Applications/Utilities). One should not move Apple-provided objects from the /Applications or /Applications/Utilities directories.
    Good luck!

  • Trouble with launching yosemite installer

    Hi all.
I've downloaded Yosemite via App Store, after that installer's start page appeared. But I rebooted my Air by mistake before start installing process.
Thus I've got no idea for now (after reboot) how to launch Yosemite installer manually (App Store shows that I've really downloaded new OS X, but there is no way to start installing). Can anyone help me with that?

    Hi, lebedev.antony.

  • HT201372 What is an OS X Installer App

In order to create a bootable drive for Mavericks I understand that I need to download an installer app.  I'm not sure what that is.  Is it what I find on my list of purchased programs?  When I click on that to download it says you already have this installed are you sure you want to install it?  I want to get it to an external drive.  If I download it it won't start installing will it?  Will I have the option to install in the external drive?  Thanks

It's Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks (if you purchased a copy) or Yosemite.
The download will not auto start. Just move it to your other storage device and follow the steps to make a bootable installer.
