Yosemite killed my wifi

Upgraded to Yosemite this evening on my mid 2011 Mac mini and now I don't have wifi. The wifi menubar icon has an "x" on it and when I click on it, it says, "Wi-Fi: not configured." The only option is to Open Network Preferences.
When I open Network Prefs, there's no wifi option on the left, only ethernet, Thunderbolt, firewire and bluetooth. I try to add a wifi network via the "+" sign, but nothing gets added. My wifi network is working fine as my wife and kids' computers (on Mavericks) as well as all of our iOS devices connect to it fine as usual.
Luckily, my Mac mini is normally connected to the internet via ethernet cable, but I need to figure this wifi issue out.
When I go through whatever diagnostics, it sees my wifi network and allows me to enter my password, but then it won't connect. But, it only shows my wifi network via these diagnostics - not from the wifi dropdown on the menubar and not in Network Prefs.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

  • I have an iPhone 4S with Sprint, I had to replace my last phone after the newest update killed my wifi button. Now my new phone won't get 3G at all. I have tried turning my phone off/on, resetting my networks, and turning airplane mode off and on.

I have an iPhone 4S with sprint. I had to replace my phone after the new update killed my wifi button and wouldn't let me turn my phone off. Since I've had my new phone, I haven't been getting 3G. I have tried resetting my networks, Turing airplane mode off/on and restarting my phone. Nothing seems to work. Any info on what I should do next would be great.

If you have set this phone up, then there would not necessarily be a solution here until you have been verify with the provider that everything is provisioned correctly on their end. Since the 3G comes from your cellular provider, if the settings are correct on the phone, then you should work with the carrier next.

  • 8.1.3 update killed my wifi

Ok, my iPhone 4S worked fine on 8.1.2. After today's update to 8.1.3, my wifi is no longer working. The wifi button under setting is grayed out and disabled!!!
I have done a complete restore from iTunes and set it up as a new iPhone - wifi disabled and grayed out.
Restored from my backup - same thing, wifi disabled and button grayed out.
So now I have a iPhone 4S with no wifi.
Apple OS updates really ***** these days.
Anyone has the same experience with the 8.1.3 update on an iPhone 4S? Suggestions on how to fix it?

Thank you all guys. I finally get it to work.
I believe that it is a software issue. Right before the 8.1.3 update, wifi is working perfectly. I put it on the table and started the update. Afterwards, the wifi went dead. The phone was sitting on a table and plugged in. So nothing could have kill the wifi. I don't believe in coincidents, my wifi chip decided to go bonkers right after I do a software update? good try Apple. You screwed up the update, so just admit it.
I read about the so called 'reflowing' the wifi chip. I don't believe heat from a blow dryer can 'reflow' anything. I gave it a try anyway, no help.
Finally, I turn on the airplane mode, then do a phone reset (home + sleep button for 10secs). Upon rebooting, I turned off airplane mode and the wifi button is enabled again. Just like that.
I hope this can help others who have experienced the same issue.
So, in other words, what you did was essentially reset the connection for the wi-fi, just like the article advised.  If it was the iOS, that wouldn't have fixed it.  It was some sort of setting issue.
The iOS cannot cause the wi-fi to gray out permanently.  It doesn't work that way.

  • Yosemite killed Magic Mouse

Yosemite killed my Magic Mouse. It disconnects all of the time. Sometimes never reconnecting. Sometimes taking 15-20. Its so frustrating. Switching the mouse on/off from the mouse itself or via toggling Bluetooth on/off my MBP doesn't do anything. Manually trying to connect does nothing either. I participating in the Yosemite beta program from start to finish and submitted feedback on the issue numerous times.
Anyone else experiencing this or have a fix?
    Thanks
    ~ G

You've probably fixed this by now, but I encountered it on a Macbook Pro after upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.1 from Mavericks, where the Magic Mouse worked fine. After booting into Yosemite after the upgrade, the Magic Mouse wouldn't resync and the Bluetooth preferences didn't show the mouse. I changed the mouse batteries, turned it off and on several times, turned the Macbook Pro's Bluetooth off and on, and removed the unconnected Magic Mouse listing from the Macbook Pro's Bluetooth Preferences.
I'm not positive what fixed it, but while struggling with this issue it occurred to me an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard and an iPhone with Bluetooth enabled were just a foot or two away from the MBP. I moved the iPad with its Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone w/Btooth enabled to the next room and suddenly the Magic Mouse connected to the MBP. I then noticed the iPad or iPad Btooth keyboard showed up as available in the MBP's Bluetooth preferences, so I removed that, too.
I'm not sure if this was a coincidence, but the idea it might help struck me based on the following reasoning, which might be faulty:
    - maybe Bluetooth in the Macbook Pro, the iPad and the iPhone were all detecting the Magic Mouse and the iPad and/or iPhone were "winning" or hogging, perhaps because they were on next to the Magic Mouse during the Macbook Pro's long hiatus during the Yosemite installation.
    - maybe by the time the Macbook Pro finally booted to Yosemite, the iPhone and/or iPad had hogged the Magic Mouse Bluetooth identity so the MBP saw the Magic Mouse as unavailable even though the MM and iPad/iPhone were just friends, not a pair.
I had another iPhone next to the MBP but its Bluetooth was off.
I didn't have time to verify this after the Magic Mouse started working because I was charging a client an hourly rate, otherwise, I would have nailed it down. Still, the agony in the forums over this issue lead me to post this possibility in case it turns out to be true.

  • IMac Retina 5K - Yosemite 10.10.2 - Update has killed my WiFi! (Before everything worked fine on 10.10.1)

    Hello,
    URGENT HELP NEEDED !
Imac 2014 Retina 5k with 4ghz Intel Core and 16GB Ram
    Router : Netopia
Have upgraded this morning my iMac Retina to Yosemite 10.10.2. Before upgrade Wifi worked great, now since upgrade, I lose the wifi connection after a few seconds ! To get it back I have to (a) Reset the router (b) delete the wifi network from Network settings (c) restart my iMac
I then get the internet back for a period going from 20 seconds to about 5 minutes max!
In the router log I see on he MAC address of the iMac the computer connect itself, and then I see a message that says "Suspect Connection" and then another for the MAC address of the iMac being "Connection closed".
No tempory fixes work! I have discussed this with my internet provider (Swisscom) and they have done everything they can do on their side (change router channels etc...) but to no avail. They say this is an Apple issue.
    I am going crazy !
    Any solution is welcome ...

  • Yosemite (OS X 10.10) killed my WiFi :(

I just updated to Yosemite on a brand new 15" MBP Retina Display. For some reason my WiFi is not working. I turn it on and select the network I want to join (my regular network at home that I've been using with this same computer before updating). So, I turn it on and select the network and doesn't seem to want to join it and then my WiFi switches back off completely.
Is anyone else having problems with their WiFi on Yosemite?

Ever since Yosemite Developer Preview 4 my 13" MacBook Pro (non-Retina) has not been able to connect properly to the WPA2-Enterprise wireless network at my university. I literally bought the computer FOR my university work. I reported the issue to Apple through Feedback Assistant using Wireless Diagnostics. I briefly had Developer Preview 5 installed earlier today and that seemed to fix everything. I then upgraded further to Developer Preview 6 (I hadn't been on my Mac lately so I was behind in updates. There was no reason to use it since the Internet was nearly impossible to use) The WiFi seemed to be working flawlessly in both DP 5 and 6, so I thought the error had been resolved. After installing Yosemite Golden Master today, the issue is back!
My WiFi indicator is doing the "trying to connect" animation but the wireless is actually connected since I can load webpages. Sometimes after I load a few webpages, the WiFi will drop entirely. Then the network will pick back up, I will be authenticated, and then I can use the Internet again. It seems like there is a bug in the 802.1X authentication since my Network preference pane shows a "Working" indicator and the status says "Authenticating" and the WiFi indicator is animated as "Trying to connect" but I am actually connected currently. It is driving me insane.

  • Why does osx yosemite crash the wifi router?

Upgraded to Yosemite, with MBP retina and my wifi router a Netgear CG 3100 D 28 PAUS crashes every time I connect up. I have turned off wifi and then forgot the connection and then reconnected with no joy. It continued to crash the router forcing it to reboot. I reinstalled back to mavericks and there was no problem and the wifi and router were stable and worked well. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I have the same problem than you. After updating to Yosemite yesterday, my internet connection through a Netgear CG 3100 cable modem stopped, but only with the updated computer, the rest of my devices seems to connect well. After going back to Mavericks, everything work well again.
Is there might be an incompatibility between Yosemite and this cable modem?
iMac CoreDuo, 12 GB RAM, OS X Mavericks (again)

  • Why after installing Yosemite is my WiFi slooow on all my devices?

    Hello!
A few days ago I downloaded Yosemite to my late 2011 MacBook Pro with Retina followed by the update yesterday.  Ever since the initial install I have experienced an extremely slow WiFi speeds.Today I just noticed that all my devices (MacBook Air, iPad Air) all also manifesting the same problem: very very slow Internet speeds.  I had thought it was Yosemite which but now think it may be Time Capsule related.  My ISP (iinet Aus) has assured me that my line speeds are fine but when they had me do a speed test the results were very slow.  Any suggestions?  Thank-you very kindly!!
    Bec

    Hello again!
I spoke with a senior AppleCare person who made the following observation.  It must be related to my router and/or modem.  He had me unplug both, wait awhile, and then first connect the modem and then time capsule.  And guess what?  It worked!!  Thank-you Billy in the Phillipines!!!
Not the first time I missed the incredibly obvious.  However thanks to all the other Apple Care people who patiently went through all the steps mentioned by so many in these discussions.  It wasn't until Sahd in Australia asked me to check the my other computers that it was narrowed down to, what now seems like the first thing I should have tried!

  • Timecapsule kills internet/wifi connection, when starting backup?

Everytime my timecapsule start backing up, my wifi/internet connection is killed?
I still see my airport in the top bar wifi logo, but no internet connection
I have to restart timecapsule before i get my internet back
Im on a imac 27" fully upgraded with OSX Lion
    Anyone?

Unless you're backing up more than one device, a Time Capsule is a rather expensive Time Machine device.
That display shows that you're connecting over the 2.4 GHz band, which tends to be slower with an ideal connection, but tends to hold up better over distance and through interferences such as walls.
Is there any way you could connect your iMac to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, at least long enough to run a test of a Time Machine backup.  Before you run such a test, be sure that there's an Ethernet connection item in the list in the Network panel of System Preferences.  To assure that you're using the Ethernet connection, you might also want to turn off the iMac's Wi-Fi feature.
Still another option might be PowerLine equipment.  For less than the cost of an AirPort Extreme you could have near-Ethernet speeds without the need for a cable.

  • Not Happy, Yosemite killing my new iMac

I have a three month old 21" iMac with 1Gb and 8Gb DDR memory.
I updated to Yosemite several days ago and it's dreadful. Everything I do I get a spinning beachball
I've given it a few days to settle down but doing anything on it is frustrating.  I've bought this for my business (with Parallels & 8.1) and it's sucking the life out of me.
I'm not too technical but I've found the activity monitor and it shows that pretty much all of the RAM is being used.
Surely 8Gb of ram is not enough these days?  After spending £1,100 on a computer there's no way I'm buying more RAM....
Can anyone suggest what is killing my machine?
    Thank you in advance

thanks, i've ran the eltrecheck and here are the results

  • Yosemite kills my Internet

I upgraded to Yosemite last night on my Macbook Air (2013-mid). Today I tried to go online and it said not connected to internet. The wifi icon on top right shows Connected (to my home wifi which worked fine before upgrade), however, it is not connecting at all. I google it and noticed some ppl got the same issue. But most of them could connect just unstable. Mine is not connected at all even it shows connected..... Anyone may have any solution or nothing i can do but waiting for the apple updates to fix the bug? Please help.......

    Hello ipingilie,
For issues with getting online, then check out the first article below to use the Wireless Diagnostics to help isolate the issue. I would also recommend creating a new network location as that has helped me in the past with internet issues.

  • HT6572 10.10.1 update killed my wifi!!

I updated to 10.10 and have had no problems.  Today I install this 10.10.1 update and now my wifi is completely unreliable!  None of the fixes that people have mentioned have worked for me.  Bluetooth makes no difference, changing 5g channels does not help.  I only have a connection for about a minute and then it stops working altogether.  Pings to my router correlate to my connectivity but they fluctuate anywhere from 1ms to 500ms and then suddenly I get "Request timeout for icmp_seq nnn".  At that point, if I switch to another network or turn on and off wifi I restablish my ping and connectivity (again ranging from 1ms to 400+ms pings just to the router next to my computer).
This is ridiculous!!  How does the supposed fix for wifi problems create problems I never had with 10.10.0?
This needs to be fixed immediately!

UPDATE: Solved Wifi issue with MBA 2013... so far!
    Hardware:
    MBA 2013
    Clearwire Clear Spot 4G Apollo
ISSUE: after Yosemite update (and 10.10.1 update) wifi connection continuously dropped and reconnected.  No issues before Yosemite.
I was able to test using several wifi networks, which other than being a little slower than expected, all worked with no connecting issues.
Attempted fixes: All the standard ones found in this forum and other places (ie. delete network settings and preferences.  Delete and recreate wifi network with new name... the list goes on.)  Some very temporarily seemed to solve the issue... only to see it return after a few quick surfing sessions.
SOLVE: (at least for now... I'll update this every 24 hours for the next few days)
While in an in-depth conversation with high level Apple tech Scott... I learned that deleting the wifi preferences and settings files wasn't all the files related to wifi connection.  Keychain holds the wifi passwords.
I then changed the settings in my modem to not require a password.  It connected after asking me "this network previously was protected by a password.  Are you sure you want to join it?"  (or something along those lines)  I agreed and was connected without any drop offs... Yah!!!
After a few hours of success, I changed it to WPA2 passworded (same question box popped up, I agreed)... connect with no issues... Yah again!!!
AFTER 24 HOURS:  Still successfully connected!!!
NOTE:  I believe this issue is caused by a corrupted keychain entry.  Apples help forum shows other high level network techs have notice this issue too.
I'm assuming that just deleting the keychain related to this wifi connection would accomplish the same results.  You would just need to re-enter the wifi password.
Watch for updates every 24 hours for the next few days... any feedback would be great.  Let me know if this helped your issue.

  • After yosemite update, my wifi periodically runs very slow and sometimes disconnects

    Hi there,
After the yosemite update my iMac's wifi has been running super slow, nothing to do with my own internet connection as it's fine, as other computers and devices works fine on the internet.
Recently the only way that I have fixed it is to turn my wifi off, and then turn it back on again, this fixes it for a short amount of time before I need to do it again.
    Any suggestions?
this was a screenshot during the time that it was running slow, during the test it went down to about 0.02 mbps download, then spiked to 2.5mbps, causing the average of 0.19mbps.
Upload speed seemed average for my internet connection.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Yosemite killed FCPX 10.1.3

Since upgrading my iMac (24-inch, Early 2009, 4GB) to Yosemite (final release), Final Cut Pro (10.1.3) no longer works. I get the following error: "This graphics configuration does not support hardware acceleration, which is required to run Final Cut Pro." I have tried deleting my copy of FCP and redownloading from the Apple App Store, but still nothing.
It has been working fine under Mavericks. I know it's my fault for not researching Yosemite compatibility with this iMac, but I need a fix. I either need FCP to work under Yosemite, or I need to know how to downgrade back to Mavericks. Thanks in advance for your help.
    iMac (24-inch, Early 2009)
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB

I have a similar Mac (still on Mavericks), and even though I have only occasionally used with FCP X (as I use mostly my 2010 MBP and now my rMBP), yours is a cautionary tale for me.
It may well be that the GPU is borderline for this kind of work and that with Yosemite it does not work anymore.
No idea on how to make it work with Yosemite.
Note: of course most macs that worked well with FCP X in Mavericks continue to do so in Yosemite. The following may apply, however, if an old-ish mac used to work with FCP X in Mavericks, but now does not in Yosemite.
Going back to Mavericks should be possible, but is not trivial.
    0) Open the Mac App Store and find OS X Mavericks in your Purchases. You should be able to download it.
I don't think you can just reinstall Mavericks over Yosemite, though. You may have to reformat the drive, which also means that you probably should:
    1) Clone the drive to an external (since you are going to need to reformat it)
    2) From the a Mavericks installer create an installation disk on a pen drive or similar (instructions for this abound on the web - search for "Mavericks createinstallmedia")
    3) Start up holding the option key, select the aforementioned pen drive, erase the iMac drive, install
    4) Copy your stuff back - at this point it is not clear but I expect that Migration assistant should work to import your stuff correctly.
