Yosemite on Macbook Air late 2013

Hi,
I have a MacBook air with 4GB of ram, 1.3ghz, and about 60-70GB of free space. I want to upgrade to Yosemite, as I like the look of the new features-however, I am quite concerned that it will really slow down my computer. Those with the same machine as myself, does Yosemite run well? I have read accounts of it being fantastic, and accounts of Mac's becoming unusable!
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you!

1. Make a clone backup with Carbon Copy Cloner software.
   Then try Yosemite.
Yosemite runs well on a Mac with 8GB RAM installed.
2. I see no problem with Yosemite here on this Mac.
Best.

If anyone has anyideas of what is going on or could even help me thank you.

As time goes by (months or years), keep your eyes on how long Microsoft continues to support Office 2011 for Mac.  Eventually you should consider Office 365 or Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

Sounds like you may have been in extended display mode. If so, all you had to do was drag a window to the projector display. Or, if you wanted mirrored mode, in display preferences select check mirror display.

  • Macbook Pro late 2009, Macbook Air late 2013, LaCie 2TB external 2.0 3.0 USB Thunderbolt

I have a late 09 Mac Book Pro and now have a Macbook Air late 2013.  I have a LaCie 2TB Rugged 2.0 3.0 USB  & Thunderbolt connection.  The Air recognizes the external drive fine but the Mac Book Pro on 2.0 USB does not.  It shows up in Disk Util on the Pro grayed out.  Any thoughts on why the Pro will not recognize the drive?  Thanks

You might want to consider pairing waaaay down on the User Login Items.
Having all of these apps launching at startup/login is probably slowing down your Mac's startup time AND having all of these apps running in the background is both eating yo CPU cycles and RAM.
    Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.
Google apps  like Chrome and Drive may still not be playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks.
Until Google releases a proper fix or official update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall these Google apps.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox.
Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently and is ,usually, more stable on OS X Mavericks.

  • How to transfer a 8GB .MOV file from MacBook Air (late 2013) via external HD (Samsung S2 Portable) to a Dell laptop ?

    Hi guys and galls,
How can I transfer a 8GB .MOV file from MacBook Air (mid 2013) via external HD (Samsung S2 Portable) to a Dell laptop ? The mentioned file currently will not let me transfer it to my ext HD. I want to upload it afterwards to a Dell laptop with Windows software installed.
Reformatting the drive doesn't seem to be the sollution, since this will erase all the data stored on the ext HD, and it will only allow me to use the drive with either Apple or Microsoft equipment.
Please HELP, running out of options here... Thnx, "Apple-Dummy"

Attach the HDD to your MBP.  Click on the icon on the desktop COMMAND+I. It will produce a display such as this and look what it says by FORMAT.
How do I format my External HD: FAT or ExFAT?
Do this on a PC.  You will have to use the Windows equivalent of Disk Utility.  I am not a Windows user so I cannot give you detailed information regarding this.  I have seen on these forums that there are at times compatibility problems if formatted on a Mac.
Which one is preferred, FAT or ExFAT? And why?
Use ExFAT.  FAT has a file size limitation of 4 GB.

  • Safari cannot open the page because the server is not responding, MacBook Air (late 2013) 1.7 GHz

I'm no longer able to listen to a specific radio station on my 13" MacBook Air (mid-2013) via Safari.  I've been listening to this specific radio station using Safari every day for a long time, but for some reason, now, when I click on the appropriate button to listen to the radio, when the new window pops-up, the error message appears that says, "Safari can't open the page because the server where this page is located isn't responding."
Please note that yesterday, I cleared the history and website data, as I had to clean out adware off of my computer (per Mackeeper, which I'm no longer using of course, and per Safari's new thesmartsearch.net that was overriding my search preference of google).  To clean out the adware, I used AdwareMedic.
Any ideas?  Thank you in advance for any help.

Thanks for the update. You might also consider using iTunes and Internet Radio:
Not all radio stations are available though, since they want you to see advertisements in addition to listening to them

  • MacBook Pro Late 2013 retina randomly freezing

    Hi there,
I recently purchased a pretty tricked out MacBook Pro 15" Retina from the refurbished store. Totally stoked to have it, and I was really enjoying the machine.
However, I've been having these random lockups about once a day which is the only real fly in the ointment (but a pretty big one, my MacBook Air late 2013 or prior Microsoft Surface Pro were very dependable machines).
Here's some extra details about my system
    Mavericks: 10.9.4
    SMC version: 2.19f7
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,3
    Boot ROM version: MBP112.0138.B07
As far as I can tell, I'm on the latest available versions of everything (not including betas).
I have also performed the GeekBench Stress Test, an SSD stress test, a GPU stress test all of which the machine passed with flying colors. I have reset the SMC/NVRAM etc, performed the built in Hardware check with nothing but positive results (no issues found). There's no panics in the console log. Here's an excerpt from my latest freeze, which doesn't seem to have anything in common with prior freezes.

I'm still within the return window, however, I can't identify a specific hardware issue. I also have found that other individuals using MacBook Pros suffering from similar issues have had their machines & logic boards replaced with no improvement which leads me to believe the issue is in OSX or the EFI.
Any advice, tips or anything I might be missing is greatly appreciated.

    Hey Linc Davis,
It was not a hardware issue. I use a lot of refurbished hardware (iPhone 5, this MacBook Pro), and there's no discernible difference in dependability between refurbished and new. Apple's Refurbishment processes are stringent. I would like it if they were clearer about their refurbished warranty. I have purchased several Apple computers new, some of which displayed hardware faults out of the box (Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro), some of which didn't. Some issues only showed after some use (iBook G4).
Solution: I completely formatted the SSD and used the recovery partition to download a fresh copy of Mavericks from Apple. I then recovered my important data from a Time Machine backup, and re-installed the latest versions of my applications straight from the vendors. I did not do a "Migrate from backup" or anything like that, I treated it as an entirely fresh install. I believe migration from backups was the core of my issue.
Since then, I have not had a single freeze and the machine is more performant than before. My console is also a lot tidier. It's likely the install that came on the computer was faulty, Migration Assistant broke something, or some other bug appeared in the interim.
I'm very happy I don't need to waste time with a lengthy & tiresome replacement process. I hope this helps anyone else suffering from this issue.

  • Help, how to downgrade my macbook air late 2010 from os x yosemite to snow leopard

A very good friend just updated my Macbook Air late 2010 (OS Snow Leopard) to OS X Yosemite. Now my Macbook air is messed up. No sound. Left shift key not working.and so forth. I am wondering if I can return it back to my previous OS?
How to return it to my previous OS? Please help me. No need to back up anything, as everything is in my dropbox.

    1. Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Select Disk Utility from the main menu. Click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When formatting finishes quit DU. Select Reinstall Lion from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

  • Macbook Air Late 2010 display flickers after installing Yosemite

    Hi !
    I'm from Germany.
i have upgraded my Macbook Air, Late 2010 from Mountain Lion to Yosemite last Saturday.
The Installation works fine. At the first Time i have no problems, but:
One Day later i start my Macbook Air normally. Now the left side of the screen is flickering.
There are vertical lines to see. The right side of the integrated screen is ok.
i have resetted the SMC and the Power Management.
Please help, what can i do ?
    Greetings
    iRoGo

I noticed a similar issue with my MBA 2012 after installing Yosemite. The screen flickers slightly most of the time now. It's more noticeable with dark backgrounds. It almost 'vibrates' and is very annoying. Reminds me of an old monitor with a low refresh rate. I reset the SMC, PRAM, etc. and contacted Apple, who had me go through the same steps. The flickering is still present when booted into Recovery Mode. When I boot into Safe Mode the issue gets dramatically worse and I see screen artifacts like iRoGo describes -- parts of the screen blanking out, whole screen/parts of the screen flickering on and off, lines appearing, etc. It's basically unusable in Safe Mode.
At this point the issue seems to be hardware-related (i.e. issue persists in even in Recovery Mode), but I'm suspicious seeing that it manifested right after installing Yosemite. I will be bringing my MBA to Apple for service later this week...

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

  • MacBook Pro late 2013 does not show login window after waking from sleep

MacBook Pro late 2013 does not always prompt for login, but opens directly to desktop, even though security settings are setup to prompt for password after 5 minutes. Up to now, this only has happened on battery, machine goes to sleep or lid is closed, 10 minutes pass, lid is opened and desktop is shown instead of lock screen. Console shows, that the machine was actually sleeping (10 min no log entries) and also does not show any error in regards to login window.
This behaviour occurs randomly and I could not track down any root cause/behaviour, yet. Sometimes everything behaves as it should.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    marcus

Count me in, I have the same issue, and from what I read here, it looks like a Yosemite/SSD related issue ?
I'm not 100% sure if it started when I put a SSD in my old iMac 2009 (as a fusion drive) or if that's after that when I upgraded to Yosemite...
I did disable auto poweroff like suggested in another thread : Mac freeze during the night sleep.
    sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0
    We'll see if it helps.
It happens toughly a couple of times a week.
