Yosemite on Pause
Where on my computer is Yosemite being downloaded? I'm on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) right now, but my computer is partitioned, to where I can use Yosemite on it also. I upgraded Lion to Yosemite, (really love it) but the Startup disk with Yosemite no longer showed up like it did when I was on the Startup disk using Lion. So, to be able to switch back and forth between systems, I used the Terminal and typing in (diskutil cs list diskutil coreSorage revert lvUUID) which would take me to the gray screen with the two disks, plus recovery disk. I tried restoring Yosemite using SL, but I interrupted it in mid stream and I tried going back to the Yosemite startup disk and although the partition is still there, but it shows up as "Untitled," and it's empty. I went to the app store and I'm in the middle of downloading Yosemite again, but I don't want it taking over the partition with Snow Leopard on it, because I don't want Yosemite taking over completely. I have to many important files on SL. Where on my computer is Yosemite being downloaded? I can't seem to locate it, which leads me to believe that it will be installed over my SL. Am I right about this? Any help would be appreciated and if you let me know right away it would also be appreciated, since I can't keep the downloading procedure for Yosemite on pause forever. Thank you so much! -Della
Ok, never mind. I think I may have found the answer. Being that I have hardly ever gotten any answers to my questions, basically renders this discussion board practically useless. Thanx. -Della

My computer installed the 10.10.2 update the other night and since then my mid-2010 iMac, which had been performing flawlessly for almost four years, will now FREQUENTLY will 'pause' or slowdown across all programs, not just in one program, i.e.: iTunes will pause music on its own (without skipping) before resuming, the spinning wheel will come up for 5-10 seconds, and the entire computer will be unresponsive at random intervals with no rhyme or reason to what triggers it (even as I write this, the computer will pause and I'll have to retype whatever I tried typing). The only programs I'm running at any given time are iTunes, Safari, and Pages (as I'm in the middle of my dissertation), which are the exact same programs as I've been running this entire time; the only change (that I am aware of) to my computer in the past 24-48 hours is the 10.10.2 update. I've seen other threads in these communities talking about similar issues and I was thinking that maybe the common thread is that maybe the update is just a bit too much for computers with the original 4GB RAM installed to handle. Here's my full EtreCheck report, and other people experiencing similar issues should feel free to post their problems and EtreCheck reports here so we can try to determine whether this is, in fact, stemming from the 10.10.2 update, or not.
Problem description:
Up until the recent Yosemite update (10.10.2) my computer performed flawlessly, with almost no pauses in Safari and at no time did a pause or slowdown in any program cause a similar issue in other programs. Now in the last 24 hours, my entire computer will pause or slowdown, including my iTunes *pausing* without skipping for a period of 5-10 seconds, at random and frequent intervals, despite having only Safari, iTunes, and maybe Pages or Preview open (that is, the exact same programs and same CPU activity load as the past four years before this recent update). The only thing that’s new in the last 24-48 hours it the 10.10.2 update that was automatically pushed by Apple into the App Store.

Your hard drive is failing. Plus, you only have 4 GB RAM. Have your internal hard drive replaced with an SSD. And as long as you are taking it in for service, get as much additional RAM as you can. Then you should be fine. -
Yosemite download paused and unable to resume
Trying to update I mac 2009, running osx 10.6.8. upgraded to 8 gig ram. Lost wifi connection during download. Now I am unable to resume download or start new one.
Also another useful tip: Hit the pause button once in a while and then click RESUME immediately. This helps to resume the download from the last paused point, should there be a power outage or something.

I'm a first timer on this (or any) help site. I just installed Time Capsule. The first backup looks like it will take two days at the present speed. Can I close MacBook Pro and have first back up continue, and can I unplug tomorrow and plug in at work without affecting the backup?
Hi Oneinspirit,
Time Machine backups can be paused by choosing "Stop Backing Up" from the Time Machine icon on the right hand side of your menu bar ( ). Once you're ready to resume the backup, you can choose "Back Up Now" from the same icon.
Start a backup: Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, then choose Back Up Now.
Pause a backup: Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, then choose Stop Backing Up.

I paused the Yosemite upgrade download (my home DSL was going to take 9 hours plus). Now, I cannot un-pause and have a "waiting" message next to the pause icon.
My machine paused or froze at 3.6 GB. Upt to then it was downloading. I made random keystrokes and changed PREFS - ENERGY SAVER to Never Sleep.

Bluetooth headphones disconnecting after pausing video content on Yosemite.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014)
Yosemite 10.10.3 (latest public beta)
(short) My Beats Studio Wireless headphones will disconnect after pausing video content.
(long) My headphones will connect without issue. However, after watching video content (either on Safari or QuickTime), the headphones will disconnect from bluetooth. To re-connect, I must turn the headphones off then back on. I have read the bluetooth faqs and there are no solutions addresses this issue. I have had moderate results by removing com.apple.bluetooth.plist and re-pairing my devices, yet, the problem returns after watching video in Safari. This problem only persists on OS X. I have tested the headphones with Windows and iOS and they work as intended with no dropouts. Any ideas?Hi tlacroixia,
Thank you for the response. Because this is not happening when your computer goes to sleep, the first troubleshooting steps I would recommend would be to reset your computer’s PRAM and SMC. Please follow the instructions located in the attached two articles below to complete these steps, and again, please let me know if the issue continues.

SubjecSummary of your question
I don't want yosemite. It only down loaded a small portion before I changed my mind. Still on the desktop even though i put it in trash and emptied trash. icon says "paused" MY mac is 2009 too old for yosemite. How can I remove what has been downloaded?MY mac is 2009 too old for yosemite.
Yosemite will run on that computer. Try quitting the App Store and then control click on the installer - Move to Trash. The installer should be in your Applications folder. -

Hey guys, I've been trying to save my mac from this constant lag for the past few days to no avail. I've been reading the forums and trying to figure this out myself but I haven't been able to reach a solution so here I am. I've done a clean reinstall. I've run disk permissions and repaired the disk. I've reset PRAM. I don't have FileVault running. I am constantly getting rainbow wheel, even as I'm typing this question out. Applications freeze in their own windows, for example, Chrome will freeze but I will still be able to move over to another application like safari and use safari. It's practically impossible to run any kind media because it stutters constantly. Any and all help is welcome, thanks in advance.

Mid 2012 13” Macbook Pro slowed to a crawl after update to Yosemite. I currently have 10.10.1 running. I have tried a clean install, I’ve resetted PRAM, I’ve run disk permission verification and repair. None have helped. I constantly get rainbow wheel and all sorts of media stutters.
Below are my EtreCheck results. Any and all help is welcome, thanks in advance guys.

It's been a few days since my last post, i've tried uninstalling chrome and adobe flash but my mac is the same. My problems have actually grown. Now my mac is heating up even when the lid is down and the computer is sleeping. The battery has also begun to drain very quickly. Any suggestions? solutions? After recently installing yosemite my mac been painfully unresponsive and slow. I cannot boot up in normal mode, i'm currently in safe mode.
What I have tried so far and what I know:
Initially thought filevault was the issue, I disabled encryption and now it says "decryption is paused" and hasn't resumed in days. Potentially is the issue.
I run a hardware diagnostic test using the hardware check within the macbook pro (booting up holding D) and the mac didn't identify any hardware issues.
I reinstalled yosemite (not a clean install) and the issue was not resolved.
I have completed a backup of my mac so all my data is secure.
Any help would be great, even just telling me how to turn on filevault will be helpful.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

New iMac running 10.10.1 frequently pauses, way too slow
I recently bought a 27 inch iMac, installed Yosemite, and migrated my files by time machine from a 5 year old macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. Since updating to 10.10.1, I frequently get the spinning beachball while I wait to continue, and everything seems much slower than it should. Safari downloads take forever, compared to Firefox. I ran an EtreCheck report pasted below. I tried some easy fixes like removing desktop clutter, reducing transparency, but that doesn't affect the overall slowness. Any solutions welcome!
Problem description:
Installed Yosemite on new iMac, migrating from snow leopard on an older macbook pro. Instead of being fast, processes frequently pause for bit while the beachball spins, then resume. Way too slow, much slower than my old macbook pro.

Why does Yosemite keep freezing?
I have a MacBook Pro, 2012 I believe. For the most part, it's been one of the best computers I've owned so far, running smoothly with few glitches or errors. Then I updated to Yosemite.
Now, I'm lucky if a job that took a few seconds on the previous system takes less than five minutes on the new one. The system lags and hangs pretty much every other action. It has to 'think' about everything, but especially typing. While writing this, the system paused for over fifteen seconds, unable to do anything, before continuing with typing out my sentence. Here's a little bit of what keeps going wrong:
1.) While typing in Microsoft Word, the system will continually and consistently freeze, often in the middle of a word I was tying, sometimes for upwards of a minute. May or may not complete the word or phrase I was typing when freeze occurred (literally just happened while typing this sentence; so Firefox is buggy too) Saving and opening files also takes an inordinate amount of time.
2.) Using iTunes or 3rd Party software for music and/or videos is pretty much impossible. Audio will repeatedly pause and glitch for upwards of thirty seconds before resuming, or just cut out entirely. Video doesn't fare much better, however video will sometimes freeze while audio continues on for a few seconds before freezing as well. Other times video and audio will pause at once and then resume. Problem is also present (but less pronounced) for YouTube videos.
3.) Accessing files takes upwards of a minute (depending on size and location) and will necessitate no other activity on other programs in the meantime (system will lock up temporarily and then resume as file opens).
4.) System will often stop and lock up even when I'm not doing anything; evidenced by the spinning 'busy' icon appearing and the system not responding when prompted.
5.) System seems to have a problem with scrolling through menus or websites as well.
6.) Possibly the cause of -or related to- these problems: Filevault will not stop its encryption process. I left the system running on cord power (modifying the appropriate energy-saving settings so the computer wouldn't go to sleep automatically) for upwards of 24 hours with no programs running, and the progress bar hasn't moved. (Occasionally it'll jump to full and then return to half-full)
I love my computer, but this new OS has made me pull my hair out and want to bash my head into the wall, repeatedly. I have no idea how to fix this, or how I would implement a solution, if any. My only thought is that I should re-download and install the previous OS, but it'd be a tremendous hassle and I'm worried about compatibility issues with some of the newer files. Could someone please explain why this keeps happening and walk me through a solution? Bear in mind that I am the DEFINITION of 'Stupid end-user'. I know nothing about how computers or coding works, and I'm just trying to get mine fixed.Activity Monitor - Mavericks also Yosemite

MacBook Pro mid. 2012 got slow (even reinstalling Yosemite from cero)
Hello I'm Abraham,
This is my Mac:
Macbook Pro Mid. 2012 model (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB, 500 GB HD) with OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
(Purchased brand new from Apple Store since 2013 and I'm the only user of it)
The issue:
My MacBook started getting really slow that the only way I could use it was on Safe Mode. I'm a common user, the most demanding program I use is Photoshop CS4 (beginner level) and I'm extremly cautious installing non-safe or third-party software.
I found the problem was that FileVault bug that makes Yosemite hang or freezes with the last upgrade (If you choose FileVault turn on) so in some way the ecryption process get stuck the whole system.
I solve the problem doing this: (http://www.macissues.com/2014/10/27/filevault-bug-makes-yosemite-pause-or-hang-a t-login/)
After that I started using Mac as common and running really fast and smoth as Mac normal does, not demanding so much from it. But after some weeks from the FileVault problem it started getting slow again, not so much but with lethargy.
So I did this 4 tasks (in that order) trying to back my common Mac speed:
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support (The result from this Test was that everything is good)
And my last move, and I don't know if was the right choice, was format the hard drive with Level 3 secure option (from Disk Utility and took like 40 hours to finish) and reinstall Yosemite from cero and keeping the Hard Drive without nothing (software, photo, music, etc.)
So my Mac now it's like brand new, but it still has lethargy doing things (I mean more than usual) like:
Switching programs
Writing trough the keyboard / 'Backspacing'
Starting up the Mac
Logging in and out from the system (Usually took about 30 secs. - 1 min, now takes up to 4-5 minutes)
Opening Safari Tabs / Finder Tabs
Even with taks like those ones, the color wheel appears.
In conclusion: I can use the Mac, but after some time it gets really annoying, it's like going back to Windows.
If anybody knows what could be, I will appreciate your help.
Thank's.Thank's!

How do I stop notifications to upgrade to Yosemite?
I'm on 10.6.8. I keep getting notifications to upgrade to Yosemite. I don't want to upgrade because I've heard Yosemite caused problems and lag issues to Logic Pro 9. I don't want to keep getting the notifications to upgrade. I've refused so many times, but it keeps popping up. How do I stop these?
The updates list is blank and says "no updates are available". Even when I clicked "show incompatible app update", Yosemite still isn't listed on there. So, where else am I supposed to click?
Since the update list is blank, I tried right-clicking the "free update" button, but all that did was download Yosemite, which I don't want to do, so I paused it.
Do you why am I getting notices to upgrade to Yosemite if there are "no updates available" in the App Store? Or am I supposed to download Yosemite first, then right-click it to hide the update? -
How do I permanently prevent Yosemite installing on my Mac?
I accidentally clicked on Install All in the App Store when I did not mean to update from Snow Leopard to Yosemite.
I immediately hit Pause to stop it getting any further but am concerned it may continue the installation when I restart, which I absolutely do not want!
Is there a method to uncheck the Install option in the App Store?
I am running Yosemite from an external hard drive but do not want it on my internal hard drive.
PeterBobHarris wrote:
If you let the Yosemite installer finish downloading, it will automatically start, HOWEVER, it will put up dialog boxes that give you a chance to Quit the installation.
You can then keep the installation in your Applications folder for a future use.
NOTE: I ALWAYS download the Major releases and Quit soon after they are released (Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite). Apple has a tendency to remove the previous version one they make a major new release. If I have my own copy, I can decide to upgrade to any intermediate version and not be forced to go to the latest. And since I already download each release, they are all listed in my App Store Purchases and are available for re-download. If you do not download a copy, and at a later date you decide you want to upgrade to that copy and not the latest and greatest, you will be out of luck, as you will not have a local copy and your purchase history will not list the release for re-download.
My advice is to download and Quit. Copy the Installer from the Applications folder to a safe place and be happy in the knowledge you have options in the future that you would have lost otherwise.
The bottom line is that you will not be forced to complete the installation. You will have an opportunity to quit before the installation really gets going.
If the suggestions from Eric Root and sean.wells work, then just file this bit of trivia away for future reference.
This is very good advice. You will not be forced to install Yosemite, since you can just Quit rather than click on the "Continue" button that you see when the installer lunches. But having a copy of the installer stored for future use is a good idea. If you are chronically short of disk space, consider backing up to an external drive.
