Yosemite Photos and RAW files

In iPhoto I used to be able to right click on the file and choose ‘Edit in External Editor’, the file would then open in Photoshop Elements, in a format known as Adobe Camera RAW. This is specifically designed for Editing RAW files. This option no longer seems to exist in 'Photos', so my question is how do I get the RAW file into PSE’s Adobe Camera RAW from within the new Photos app?

With photos you can't do the same as in iPhoto re editing in e.g Photoshop.
What you can do is choose your raw file and export it, to a folder on your desktop
open that in Camera Raw do your adjustments, save and reimport into Photos.
hope this helps.

  • Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files.

I'm using Panasonic LX3 with its RAW format (a supported RAW format since sometimes with iPhoto '09 already)
When I choose to Photo Stream my images after import with iPhoto '11, it says "Photo Stream only supports JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW files."
My files are RAW formats so why can't I photo stream it?!
Is there something I can get around or need to wait for Apple to support this?!

You don;t have a preset set. What you are seeing is normal behavior when importing Raw files.
What you see at first is the camera produced JPG preview imbedded in the Raw file. Aperture puts this up while it decodes the actual Raw data. This JPG has all the special settings and enhancements set on the camera and is basically the image that would be produced if you were shooting JPG.
As a rule none of the settings on the camera (apart from the basics) are applied to the Raw file though some of the newer cameras have settings that could affect the data stored in the Raw file.
This is a often asked question by those just getting into Raw and you can search the discussions here for other answers to this question.
Given the capability of today's cameras, especially the high-end ones, a lot of users have decided to abandon Raw as unnecessary  if they are happy with the images the camera produces. It's all a matter of personal needs.

  • JPG and RAW files are not grouped together.

I am finding that my RAW and JPG files are not grouped together.  They show up on the Grid View as JPG for the JPG file and RAW + JPG for the NEF(RAW) file.  This does not seem to be consistent through out the folder.  Some of the pictures are grouped together and others are not.  The ones that are not grouped together have been auto-stacked and then unstacked.  I am not sure if this is what caused the seperation of JPG and RAW files.  I did try to take a picture that I had auto-stacked it  and then remove it and it did not sepearate.  The "Treat JPG files next to raw files as seperate photos" option is turned off, like it is in my Lightroom 3.

This is what I'm talking about:
    Show subfolders are on:
    In windows Explorer:
    In the Import Dialog:
    Where are the files?
If I click on the Folder 2014_12_14... all the files from all folders will populate.

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.

  • How to have my Jpg and RAW files in version sets (PSE10)

I take both jpg and RAW files on my camera so that most of the time I am pleased with the jpg and do little editing, but some of the time I need to really work on a photo which is where the RAW file comes in handy. In my photo well I have 2 of each picture displayed ie the jpg and RAW. How can I get it so only the jpg is displayed and the RAW either hidden or as a version set collapsed? Having 2 of each photo makes the photo well look untidy and full of duplicates.
    Help appreciated.

Highlight the two photos (using Ctrl+click), right-click on one of them and select "Stack...Stack Selected Photos".

  • Does anyone know how I can copy photo and video files from the Photo's app on my Macbook, to a USB stick or other external back-up?

I've updated the software on my Macbook to the most recent version; regretting it now; and iPhoto has now become the Photo's app.
The problem is I can no longer back up my photo and video files taken on my phone, saved to my mac, by copying them and saving them on a USB stick or other external hard drive.
I could easily do this with iPhoto, but now Photos app does not let me copy the files when I select them.
Does anyone know if there's a way to save, copy or back-up my photo's and video files: prefreably one that doesn't involve iCloud, as I don't feel like paying for more storage; there must be some way to access those photos/videos from my iPhone to save on another source?

Select the photos and videos in Photos and use the command "File > Export"  and select a folder on your USB stick to save the photos to.

  • When showing JPG and RAW files as one, which do we see and which is edited?

    Hi Guys,
Hoping someone out there will have the answer to this.
Just come back from a long trip with thousands of pics in RAW, I like to use Canon DPP to generate the JPGs quickly and to give me Canons interpretation on the RAW image. (Apparently same processing as in camera).
Once imported into Lightroom 3, I have set up to view the JPG and RAW files as one.
    There are two questions:
1.) Which of the two is the visible one in Library mode? can one set the preference?
    2.) Which is edited?
I do not really want to fully develop all the pics in Lightroom as some of the standard shots have come out perfectly and at the same time I feel I need to be able to compare them.
Any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

1.) Which of the two is the visible one in Library mode? can one set the preference?
Raw only. The jpeg is sort of like sidecar. Cannot set a preference. The only setting you can change is to view them separately.
    2.) Which is edited?
    Raw only.
... and at the same time I feel I need to be able to compare them.
Lightroom's Canon-specific DNG profiles are developed to match Canon's picture styles (or whatever they are called). So, if you use, say, the Faithful Picture style in Camera, Lightroom's "Camera Faithful" profile will render your raws very close to DPP, if not identical. That's for default settings. However when you start adjusting, Lightroom's and DPP's processing may differ.
You may not even need those Jpegs for comparison, after all.

  • When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"?

When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"? IE always saved photos in the "Photos" file and documents in the "Documents" file. Firefox makes me choose every time. Very annoying.

How about if Firefox is programmed like IE in this ONE thing...
When saving files from internet sources, if the file ends in a typical photo extension such as .jpg, .bmp, .tif etc. it defaults to save it in your PHOTOS folder.
When saving anything like a .doc, .pdf etc. it defaults to save it to your DOCUMENTS.
You could still change it to 'desktop' if that if really where you want all your photos and documents... or some other folder that you decide, but DEFAULTS to the LOGICAL folder.
I have carpal tunnel SO bad that even typing this suggestion is painful and having to make the extra click along with moving the mouse EVERY time I want to save something is painful.
ALSO, I shouldn't need a bunch of ADDONS to accomplish this. I tried downloading one and it did nothing. The problem still exists.

  • Separating jpg and raw files after importing in lightroom 5

i would like to separate my jpg and raw files once they are in lightroom (right after importing) so that all my jpgs are 1 after the other on the film strip below  and my raw files are one after the other. is this possible?

  • 10.4.11 autoupdate killed tiffs and raw files - REPAIRMENT HOW?

    Hi there!
I got big problems when I was updating from os 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 - everything crashed and I had to install everything new - I decided to take a new harddisk as well, but when I copied the rest of the stuff from the old one, I had to realise that several tiffs and raw files were damaged in a way that "preview" can handle them, but no other programm (no photoshop, or capture one). Is there any possibility to get those stuff back working well?
Thank you for all your help!!!
    Yours,
    Joerg

    Thanks for that,
I downloaded RPP and it does indeed open the RAW files and lets me convert them into TIFFs or JPGs which I can then import into Photoshop to play with.  However I'm still confused about why I can't open them in Photoshop directly.  My other camera is a SLR saving to a SanDisk Extreme lll Compact Flash card and I can open RAW files off that on the same computer with no problem using a Photoshop RAW converter plug-in.

New iMac. Flash drive is primary for OS and apps.  I want to use my HD 2 (1 TB hard drive) for my bulky photo and music files.  Can I direct iPhoto and iTunes to use the larger hard drive as the primary target when importing?

Yes.  Unfortunately, I don't know the specifics because I don't use iPhoto anymore and I completely copied over 15 years of MP3 files recently when I installed 10.7.  Needless to say, I have not opened iTunes since and probably never will again - not because of iTunes but because of my stupidity.  I did have some of the files backed up but I hadn't backed up in a while.......anyway....
When I imported my CD's, I had them go directly to my external firewire.  I can't remember exactly how to set it, but in the preference section of iTunes you can specify an import destination to any drive that's available to your machine.  I did this with iPhoto as well way back at one point when I was using Tiger, but I don't remember the specifics on that either.  I can't imagine they would have discontinued support for that feature since then.
    Sorry I couldn't help more.

  • Preparing for Photos - exporting RAW files

I'm planning to switch over to Photos when it is available. The problem is that my current Aperture file is quite big - 1.64TB and I think the online Photos option only allows for 1TB.
What I'll probably do is take out all of the RAW files and archive them on an old hard drive. Is there an easy way to systematically remove all RAW files, making sure there is a JPEG file left behind? I've never done anything like this before, so this might be much easier than I realize!

    Hi John,
Since PhotOSX is not yet in even in public beta release, I suggest — emphatically — not doing anything or worrying about preparing for the transition yet.  Further, since Aperture works and will continue to work, and since all new software is buggy, I suggest waiting until at least PhotOSX 1.1 (or equivalent) is released before making the transition.  The issue you are addressing is likely to have a different solution then than it has now.  No one outside of Apple has any idea — and those in Apple don't know with certainty — what the resolution of your issue is going to be.
That said, I think you should do the following now, all of which serve to tidy up your Aperture Library and installation.  (You may be doing all of these as part of your routine maintenance.)
    - Weed your garden.  We save _a lot_.  What can you remove and destroy without lowering the value of your collection?
    - Organize your toolshed:
    - - Combine, relocate, and remove keywords.
    - - Make your object names uniform.  If you don't have one written down, write down your Library naming conventions for Images, Projects, Albums, Smart Albums, and Folders.
    - - Organize all your Presets (throw out the ones you needed once, and still have).
    - - Delete (or change the status of) all Images marked "Rejected".  "Rejected" should not be a permanent tag.
    - - Work to have no Images flagged (Flagging is an ad-hoc tag for work-in-progress.  You should have no Images flagged at the end of any completed work session.)
    - - Make sure the folders you use to organize the other containers in your Library make sense and provide the utility you want.
    - - Attend to anything that you "left for later".
    - Repair your greenhouse Library.  I do this regularly with _every_ Library.
    - Upgrade your OS to Yosemite.
    - Upgrade Aperture to the latest version under Yosemite.
All of the above will help insure that porting your data from one database to another will go smoothly.
Always have a complete back-up of any computer file before you use it.
Hope some of that is useful,
    —Kirby.
