Yosemite problems on I mac mid 2007 machine

I Mac mid to late 2007 2.0 GHz Intel 2GB ram running Yosemite 10.10
About 3 months ago my sister (we are a Mac family) upgraded to Yosemite on her 2007 machine that had been running fine.  Did not know that was possible on an old machine.  Anyway she has been having noting but problems since.
Questions:
Is problem because she only has 2GB ram?
Can we go back on her Time Machine to around August well before she loaded Yosemite and do a total restore WITHOUT losing data from August to now?
If so how do we restore her banking, schoolwork etc. between August and now?
Thank You

  • Should I upgrade to Macericks now from 10.6.8 on my i-Mac(mid 2007, core 2 duo?). Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ? 10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about future supportibility?

Should I upgrade to Mavericks now from 10.6.8 (i-Mac, mid 2007, core 2 duo)? Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ?  I have the latest version of 10.6.8 and have upgraded my memory to 4GB. This could be one reason for me to make the move now.
10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about lack of support now. I know my PC apps will not work but maybe some apps that work now will "walk away" from 10.6.8 and then there's the security question of above.
I am also concerned about iPhoto 9 transition to i-Photo 11 and compatibility of my Time Machine WD Passport HD (format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) based on several questions in applicable forums.
Thanks for your help in this important decision!

If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard. It's much better suited to your old hardware. That said:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • I am running 10.9.4. on an older Mac (mid 2007). My iPhoto is 7.1.5.  I have no access to photos on iCloud. The icon does not even appear. I've been told that an iPhoto upgrade may not solve problem. Advice?

I have no access to photos on iCloud. The icon does not even appear on my mac or in iCloud.
The Mac is running 10.9.4. on a mid 2007 model.
    My iPhoto is 7.1.5.
I was told that my system was too old to support the required upgrades that would allow me to to see photos on iCloud; thus, I should not be the latest iPhoto.  Accurate?

All you need to do is upgrade your iPhoto to iPhoto 9.5.1 thru the App Store.  This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

  • Temps causing problems? 24" iMac, mid-2007

I have an iMac that started having possible heat issues about 3-4 months ago. After it boots up or wakes up from being asleep, within a few minutes, the CPU fan will slowly speed up to around 3300 rpm and stay there the entire time the computer is running. If my kids use it for playing games on, the screen will eventually go black and I have to press and hold the power button to shut it off and restart it.
I am looking at the temps through iStat Pro, but I dont know if any of these are abnormally high.
The iMac is currently running at 3300rpm and here are the current temps. All that has occured is the iMac was booted up, I watched iStat, then opened Safari to type this email. The CPU is running at around 5% utilization.
    Temps are in celsius.
    iMac HD: 30
    CPU: 41
    Airport card: 44
    Ambient: 29
    GPU: 97
    GPU diode: 116
    GPU Heatsink: 115
    HD Bay: 42
Would this indicate a logic board problem? I have taken the iMac apart and cleaned all the dust from inside very good and the problem persists.

Hi James. It has been a while since I did this, so I am going from memory, but this is what I did.
I checked prices of a brand new GPU w/heatsink from Apple, and it was incredibly expensive.
So I started trolling through Craigslist and ebay and finally found someone selling a used heatsink without the GPU for my model of iMac. I bought it for $5 on ebay. I thought it was an incredible deal, and I wouldnt waste much if it didnt work.
So I got the replacement heatsink and bought some thermal paste off Amazon that everyone recommended. It was called Artic Silver.
Once the heatsink and thermal paste came in, I tore it all apart using instructions I found on ifixit.com
Here is the site I used to figure out how to tear it apart:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replacing+iMac+Intel+24-Inch+EMC+2111+GPU+Assembly/5 214/1
This is the thermal paste I bought:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002EQU6C
Once I did all of this, I reassembled it (breaking my infrared sensor in the process) back, turned it on, and all the problems I was once having completely went away.
Here is what I dont know. I dont know what was really bad. It could have been a bad bonding with the thermal paste. It was all cracked and dried out on the old heatsink, so maybe just re-pasting it would have worked?
It could have also been the thermal sensors that are built in to the heatsink as well. I had no way of testing whether they were working or not.
All I know is that by replacing the heatsink and re-thermal-pasting it, my iMac is now back to normal.
    I hope this helps.

  • Version 10.1.4 don't work with Mac Mid 2007

    Hey Apple Community,
I use Final Cut Pro a long long Time...
Today I saw an update is out but... can't download... why not enough graphicperformance Why??? and where i can download a Version who works?

If your iMac is what is listed in the title of your post, than no it won't work.
According to google searches, that iMac has a Radeon HD 2400 or 2600 Pro GPU. That hasn't ever been supported in FCPX.

  • My Very Slow Mid-2007 iMac

My iMac was running unbearably slow. I'm not just talking slow to load a web page; I'm talking slow as in 20-30 second waits simply to get a drop-down menu to open or to save a file and 15 to 20 minutes to initially boot. I followed suggestions that I found in forums online, running Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk, for example. The latter helped for a time but became less and less effective for shorter intervals. I installed OSX Yosemite 10.1, hoping that would help. It did not.
At one point I came across a suggestion to run Activity Monitor. Running AM showed a recurring message: Google Chrome Helper not responding. Further checking seemed to indicate that this was a minor bug and would not affect performance. Nevertheless, I tried to disable Chrome Helper, following the directions in a post. I also installed a beta version of Chrome that was supposed to address the bug. The situation did not improve. I tried running Safari. I had similar issues with Safari.
On a whim, I downloaded the latest version of Firefox. I used to use Firefox but switched to Chrome when my school system started using Google Apps and suggested that Chrome would be the best choice of browser to work with Google Apps. When I opened Firefox, the problems almost totally disappeared. Web pages load instantly, and I am no longer getting the annoying spinning pinwheel when I click on a drop down menu. I am not a technical person so I have no idea why this should be happening or if my success will last. There seems to be no logic to it. Nevertheless, I am posting this in the event that it might help someone else going through the frustration of watching the interminably spinning rainbow wheel.

i just installed yosemite on my mcb pro mid 2012 with a clean install. so i only had the new os x yosemite running on my mac. everything went perfect. than i installed win8.1 with the bootcamp assistant and also everything went perfect.
    But here's the Problem:
When i'm using Windows 8.1 and i go to the "Computer" window where i can find my hdd partition "Bootcamp (c;) there is only this Partition. the mac Partition is missing.
so i am not able to read the files on my mac Partition.
Before i installed yosemite and win8.1, i was running mavericks and win7 on my macbook pro and i haven't had this Problem. i was able to see and read my mac Partition also on Windows 8.1???
is there any solution for this Problem???

  • Problems with FileVault 2 on my iMac mid 2007 with Mac OS LION on it

    Hi guys !
Get a problem with FileVault 2 on my iMac mid 2007 with MAC OS LION on it. FileVault 2 works, but after rebooting my system, it was unpossible to select an account with the cursor of my trackpad. No chance.
Before activate Filevault 2 the trackpad works fine. No problems to select an account. Anybody else with the same problem ?
    Regards
    Volker

    Hi EVO67 !
I checked out your solution, but.... sorry it doesn't works.
So I cut off the bluetooth connection of the magic trackpad from my iMac and pair it again, but the problem is the same.
May be it's bigger bug with LION, so I need an update for this function.
But thank you very much for your help.
    Regards
    Volker

  • My Mid 2007 24" iMac has been a bit laggy on Yosemite and getting worse every day, so I went to the Apple Support pages on Apples website looking for help and thought I'd found some. This is what I did and it made everything 100 times worse :(

So here is what I found and what I did to try to alleviate the RAM eating upgrade named Yosemite. This guy has helped quite a few people, you can read all the comments and I gave it several tries this morning.

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.
I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.
First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.
Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.
Guide of how to access Safe Mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.
To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again. You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.
More info about PRAM: OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
Voila, reconnect your external displays and enjoy your system.

I hope to hear from anyone even to knock me in the head, lol. Thanks in advance and I'll be around trying to figure this out.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Given the circumstances I agree taking it to an Apple Store might be the best way to address the problems with it. Manually eradicating all the software contributing to its unacceptable performance will be time-consuming and tedious. If it were mine there is no question I'd erase it and reconfigure it from the ground up. That would be less time-consuming and more likely to be successful, but it's also tedious.
And I do agree with a previous respondent that he could use some more RAM.
So do I. 2 GB is the absolute minimum for Yosemite to even run, and it won't run well with that little. That Mac can address as much as 6 GB, which would probably be acceptable if you were to reconfigure it and leave out the garbage software causing and / or contributing to poor performance.
Lastly, you have to evaluate how much time and money you are willing to spend on a Mac that's nearly eight years old. Age itself doesn't kill Macs, but eight years is about as much economic life that can be expected from any computer. Among the limitations that cannot be overcome are its Core 2 Duo CPU and RAM. Even 6 GB memory isn't all that much any more.
Having said that, even a brand new fully configured top of the line Mac Pro would run poorly, if at all, given the software that's on your Dad's Mac. Intego, Norton/Symantec, MacKeeper, Cocktail... all that stuff is utter garbage and there is too much of it to mention. Personal testing of Intego alone on a brand new Mac containing nothing other than one minimally configured user account resulted in performance degradation so extreme no knowledgeable Mac user would consider it acceptable.
For reference, here is the procedure I would recommend:
Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac. You will need a suitable external hard disk drive for this purpose. One with adequate capacity can be purchased for about $60.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
Always obtain software from authorized sources such as the Mac App Store, original installation media (CD or DVD), or from the developer's authorized download source. Never obtain software from download aggregator websites such as C net dot com, Mac Update dot com, Soft onic dot com, random popups that may appear while browsing the Internet, or other sources that primarily rely upon junk product advertisements for their revenue. Such sites are not to be trusted, and are the most common means of distributing adware or other junk you probably do not want.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

  • Does anyone have a Mac Mini (MID-2007) with wifi that works?

Does anyone have a Mac Mini (MID-2007 C2D) which wifi works?
It seems that Mac Mini has different models and some have a Broadcom Wifi card and some Atheros WIFI card. I'm trying to find user whom Mac Mini 2007 with atheros card works. Since os x 10.6 and 10.7 my wifi have not worked at all. I even changed internal antenna. Also attached external antenna on WIFI cards ext port. Still very poor connection. Also sometimes when my mac wakes from sleep country code of WIFI card is US not FI as rest of my family macs. WIFI is made with apple extreme router (802.11n). 2.4 and 5 Ghz networks. I do not have network interference. With Minimac Atheros card has support b and g network with 2.4 Ghz and a network with 5 ghz. Signal ratio is average -80 dbm, and speed varies from 6-36. Both a and g networks work same way on minimac. When I turn machin on wifi is usable about 1-2 minutes then latency will rice and after that timeout will occur on network. Still mac mini is connected to network.
    Atheros firmware is: 5424: 2.1.14.9
    Card: Airport Extreme (0x168c, 0,86)
    Location: ETSI
    Country: FI
    Security: NONE
    PHY: 802.11a
There are a lot of guides on net how to get it working; eg. change older OS kext, remove preferences, install os again (done all that, nothing works, but older kext files seem to work little better). But does any one have a Mac Mini with working wifi. What brand is your router and is the card in minimac original Atheros. Broadcom seems to operate Apple Extreme router quite well.

My Mac Mini Mid 2007 has the same specs:
    Card: AirPort Extreme (0x168c, 0x86
    Firmware: Atheros 5424: 2.1.14.9
Ever since I upgraded to 10.7.2, my WiFi has been running painfully slowly. Same issue: it works okay for a minute or two, but then slows to a crawl, with network timeouts, etc. And it shows I'm still connected to the network. It gets particularly bad when waking from sleep, unless I quit my web browser first, then put the machine to sleep. (Waking the machine with browser still "launched" causes big problems.)
Has anyone figured out a workaround for this issue?

  • How well does OSX Yosemite run on a Mid 2007 iMac?

I own a Mid 2007 iMac with 4GB 667Mhz DDR2 RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz processor and has ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB graphics. I was considering upgrading from OSX Mavericks 10.9.4 to OSX Yosemite, but fear it may slow the Mac down. If anybody has upgraded their Mid 2007 iMac, does it slow the system down? Thank You.

Hi JRos23. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I also have a mid 2007 iMac (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and I'm waiting on reviews like yours to evaluate if it is worth to take the leap and update. Last year I updated to Mavericks from Lion (skipped Mountain Lion) and it improved a lot on many fronts. However, it only felt smooth when I updated the RAM to 6GB. Apple specs tells us that this machine supports max 4Gb, though I found many people saying that it would support 1x2GB + 1x4Gb, and it does. I trully recommend it. If it helps anyone, I bought these: link (sorry, Spanish Amazon store).
However, seeing that you're having a good enough experience until now I will definitely consider it as near future project, maybe with 10.10.1. Is it really an improvement or are there any daily usage setbacks?
    Cheers,
    JP

  • I upgrade my mid 2007 IMac to Yosemite and it has been running very slowly since then. I have 3GB of ram. Should I go back to Mavericks?

I upgraded my mid 2007 IMac to Yosemite and it has been running very slowly since then. I have 3GB of ram. Has this been a problem for anyone else?

Your iMac year and model is low on RAM.
3 GBs is really not enough RAM to operate your Mac under OS X Yosemite OR Mavericks smoothly and efficiently.
New Macs now ship with 8 GBs of RAM as minimum, base installed amount of RAM.
Your Mac model can take a maximum amount of 6 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend purchasing and installing the necessary RAM amount to meet the 6 GB RAM total.
If you live in the U.S. , Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC (macsales.com) has the proper RAM module or kit needed to get your Mac to the 6 GB RAM total limit.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S6GP/
RAM is user installable and is, relatively, easy to install be newbie and novice Mac users.

  • Problem between a Mac Pro / 01-2007 and ATI Radeon X1900XT

    Hello,
My friend has bought a second hand ATI Radeon X1900XT with a fan Zalmann Fatality VC-ZV9 and has the following problems. She can switch on her computer without any problem and the card works fine (Photoshop, ...) As soon as she launches Secondlife client, the screen gets black few minutes after, and if she tries to switch off and on the screen, it says "No signal" anologic or digital. This card is reported to work very well with Secondlife. It can't be overheat, since it comes very quickly, and just after the crash, she can touch the card which is not hot. The fan works fine. How can I investigate to find out what goes wrong with this card ? Her computer is a Mac Pro bought in January 2007 with 3 Gb RAM and Leopard. The problems has occured before 10.5.3 version of Leopard was installed. I've made a test of the Video Memory with Techtool Deluxe and it didn't find any problem.
    Thank you

I think I'm having a similar problem: running a Mac Pro/ATI Radeon X1900XT. Was having issues with general artifacts that seemed to come and go randomly. The machine got very hot one day when the AC was not on and the office was closed: random artifact "pixel dots" became lines on the screen, and then the entire screen just went black.
I had to do a hard shut down, and it's happened several times since. When I pulled the ATI card out, there was considerable dust built up at the intake which I cleaned out. It hasn't blacked out again, but the artifacts remain on the screen.
I suspect the card is about to die, but was trying to see if anyone else had this experience? Also, if anyone recommends replacing it with the same card, or if there is a better recommendation? I do general design and photo editing, no gaming and nothing very intense.
    Thanks for the help!!
