Yosemite question

Will Yosemite OS support Freehand MX? I have been wary about upgrading operating systems (currently running OS 10.6.8 on an iMac) because I love Freehand MX. Illustrator does not provide options Freehand does. Anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks.

It's highly unlikely that it works. But check at: App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • Need help reinstalling Yosemite/Question about external hard drive

I have an early MacBook Pro and I have to reinstall Yosemite because I've been getting nothing but spinning beach balls, slow loading, lag in type showing up, and wi-fi issues.  I took the laptop to the Genius Bar at the Apple store last week and they ran diagnostics on everything and all was perfectly OK.  No hardware issues, no memory issue and he said my laptop was very clean.  He saw the spinning beach ball many times while he was working on my laptop and suggested that I turn off File Vault as that could be causing the slowdown.  He said if that didn't work (it didn't) to buy an external hard drive (which I received today) and to back up everything through Time Machine then reinstall Yosemite.  I specifically bought an external HD that says "for Mac" and as soon as I connected it Time Machine opened and did the backup.
Now these are my questions.  Are all my photos on iPhoto, and my Word for Mac documents backed up so that when I reinstall Yosemite, everything is going to be right where I left it?  Will I lose Word for Mac and have to reinstall it?  Isn't Word for Mac a one time use/install and will I have trouble and have to call Microsoft to input my authentication key in again and will they let me? I know silly questions but I'm really worried about losing stuff.
Also step-by-step detailed instruction on how to reinstall Yosemite would really be appreciated.  Thank you!

If you have taken the backup using the Time machine then there is nothing to worry as all your photos from iPhotos and Word for mac documents are backup safely by your time machine.
Only keep one thing in mind that the external HDD which you use for the time machine backup should have the capacity size of about 3-4 times that of your backup data size. Or else, the time machine external drive will start deleting the files if the external drive is about to be full.

You absolutely don’t have to reinstall the Word for mac if its install in the first place because Time machine will backup the system installed files of your MS Word which you had installed.
Word for mac is a one time install and you don’t have to call Microsoft for any authentication key after you have restored your Word backup files from the time machine drive. As I said before the time machine will backup your Word system installed files leaving you no chance to reinstall it again.

    Here, Yosemite reinstall procedure......
Important:    To reinstall OS X, you must be connected to the Internet. Make sure your power adapter is plugged in. Reinstall OS X using the built-in recovery disk.
In the menu bar, choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command and R keys.
Select Disk Utility, then click Continue.
Select your startup disk on the left, then click the Erase tab.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, then click Erase.
Important:    Erasing the disk removes all the information from the disk. Be sure to back up the information you want to keep to an external device.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.
    Hope this helps.....

  • Mail 8.1 for Yosemite Question?

Using a quote (") mark while typing in Mail 8.1 causes the line to skip since installation of Yosemite.  Can this be fixed?  Very annoying!

    From the menu bar, select
              Edit ▹ Substitutions
and uncheck all the options. Test. If the problem is resolved, you can experiment with re-enabling some of the options to further isolate the cause.

  • Stop prompting me to upgrade to Yosemite

    OSX 10.9.5
Is there a way to stop the Yosemite upgrade question/prompt? Currently I select "ask me tomorrow" everyday. I'm running VMWare Fusion and from reading user reviews the 2 are not dancing well at the moment. I feel like I'm one mouse click away from disaster. I'd like to stop the Yosemite question but not block all upgrade prompts.
    Thanks!

When the installer window pops up DO NOT click Continue, go up to the menu bar and click on Install OS X then Quit Install OS X.

  • Disappointing upgrade to Yosemite (wifi, safari, graphics, java)

Some of my problems on my MacBook Air 11 Mid 2012 running OS X Yosemite (question follows at the bottom):
    1. Wifi seems to be very unstable
    2. Safari suddenly freezes and are not very reliable
    3. Java runtime pops up every now and then, and yes I have the latest Java (8 ver. 25 or something) (see picture)
    4. Outlook REALLY struggles with almost any simple task
    5. The graphics on volume decrease/increase is horrible with black corners of the rounded edges, plain amateurish! (see picture)
    6. Safari don´t take no for an answer when I don´t want location services on website to follow me, keeps coming and has to close browser to continue.
So, is it any hope for me that this will be improved up on in a later version of Yosemite, hopefully soon? Or is my only solution to perform a clean install and cross my fingers that most issues will be resolved?
Hope some of you have any insight on this matter or that it might be an upgrade in the near future, thanks!

Never ceases to amaze me this new operating system, right before this I got Apple's answer to blue screen and had to do a restart...

  • I cannot open a document from an earlier version of pages.

Hope someone has a helpful solution for me.  I am trying to access my resume that I did in an earlier version of Pages.  I tried to open it today and saw an error saying that the document could not be opened.  I have tried researching this and basically have no solution.  I need my resume and don't know what to do. Has anyone else figured out a solution other than blowing up their computer?
    Sharon

Copy/paste from TextEdit works. The use of Pages v5 has created more problems than user solutions. Make certain you export to Word format as a backup. Pages v5.5.1 will make a huge 500Kb Word document. You will need to open and save it out from either MS Word, or the free LibreOffice to reduce it down to small double-digits in size.
Sharon, there is a Yosemite community under the general category of MacOS & System Software. Post your Yosemite questions there, and you should get competent answers to your questions. Responders to your question(s) will want to know the year and make of your Mac, how much memory is installed, and if you upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks, or an older OS X installation. The Apple > About this Mac can provide useful info. Be as concise as you can while still conveying the issue you want resolved. If you are running anti-virus software, state that as it is a known performance and stability decrement for OS X.
Yosemite is now one revision beyond the base release. Each new iteration of updates to Yosemite will fix bugs, attend to some usability issues, and improve performance. I am running Yosemite on a 2014 MacBook Air with 4GB of memory. It has been flawless — if not overly art-deco for my taste.

  • Questions on previous Yosemite upgrade posts

I had the following questions on previous Yoemite upgrade posts:
    1.  how do you acquire and make a bootable thumb drive installer?
    2.  how do you boot the system in safe mode?
    3.  what applications and versions of these are Yosemite compatible?
    4.  if an upgrade is required how do you get it?  I realize that this will be application dependent?
    Thanks.

I would go with Niel's suggestion for question 1 as the program will do all the work for you.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite I cannot download updates and the icons are not question marks.

I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, I cannot download any updates for apps and cannot purchase apps. When I go to the app store all the icons are have question marks in them. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this problem?

Repair permissions & restart your comp.

  • There are too many questions "like" mine, so here it is: I updated from Mountain Lion to Yosemite, I can't open iphoto 9.1.5, I am directed to the app store, I "accept" iphoto upgrade and enter my credentials, but no update occurs. :-(

Attempting iPhoto upgrade from 9.1.5 to 9.5.

How many questions like yours should there be? What exactly do you expect the volenteers here to do about what you personally consider "too many questions"?
To move to iphoto 9.6 (required for Yosemite) You must log in to the App store  using the Apple ID that was used to set up the compter (or purchase the application if it was purchased later), backup your iPhoto library and then download and install iPhoto 9.6 from the App store
If that is not working then you must contact App store suport - link is on the right of the App store window

  • Yosemite Mail displays image attachments as question marks if attachments also contain a pdf

We have 11 macs running Yosemity in our company and I have the following problem with Mail since upgrading.
If an email is created in Mail and both images (jpg) and pdf's are attached to that mail, the recipient will see the images displayed as question marks, but the pdf show as icon as it should. This is only on mac. Other clients see the attachments properly.
This also appears to be the case when receiving email from others using outlook. When the email contains both images (even in signatures) and pdf files, the images displays as question marks and the pdf display as icon or previewed as normal.
    Any suggestions?
Displaying remote images in HTML emails are ticked, but this is attached images, not remote images.
When sending the pdf only - displays correctly
When sending the images only - displays correctly

I found a solution here and it worked for me. It doesn't go back to old messages that are already in your inbox and correct the issue, but any new messages that come in will show images:

  • Installed Yosemite. QT Has Question Mark When I launch An Inbedded Video

    iMac - recently installed Yosemite
I have videos embedded on the site Actors Access. I always use Safari. All the videos except the latest one that was upload through Actors Access work fine. The last one uploaded when previewed launches the box with Q and the question mark inside. Is this problem with the people who uploaded it? Is this a Safari issue? The video in question works fine on other Macs I own, including another iMax. But they are running on Mavericks.. Works fine on Firefox on my iMac with Yosemite. If 4 videos work on the Actors Access using Safari with Yosemite installed why does this particular video launch the QT Question mark. How do I fix i?  And I thank you for any answer.

Can you share the URL so we can test the page and its code?

  • SMS - iMac and Yosemite Requirements Question

A question about requirements for SMS....
    iPhone running on 8.1.2
    2010 iMac running on 10.10.1
    2007 iMac running on 10.10.1
2012 Macbook Air also running on 10.10.1
SMS works fine on the Macbook Air (check)
SMS does NOT work on the 2010 iMac
SMS DOES work on the 2007 iMac
What is confusing to  me is I just went though about 2 hours with Apple support.  They discovered that the reason SMS is NOT working on the 2010 iMac is that under system information you see this:
    BluetoothLow Energy Supported: No
    Handoff Supported: No
    Instand Hotspot Supported: No
Under the Macbook air, all these fields are YES.
Now here is the confusing thing...
On the iMac 2007, they are all set to NO, but SMS works fine!
    So, my question is...
What are the true requirements to have SMS work correctly?
You need IOS 8 and Yosemite
You need a specific piece of hardware?
Support told me that the 2007 iMac should NOT be working because the Bluetooth fields are set to NO, but it does!
Any clarification in this would be appreciated.
And sorry this is so long!

I have a new IMAC 5k running Yosemite and when I log in I am asked a whole series of questions as to what keychain can access. How can I authorise all of these to be available upon login? Items concerned are such as "Talagent", "Messages agent" etc

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences... ▹ First Aid
There are four checkboxes in the window that opens. Check all of them. if they're not already checked. Close the window.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.
If you use iCloud Keychain, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.

  • QT Question With Yosemite

JUST UPLOADED TO YOSEMITE. PROBLEM WITH QT DEALING WITH SAFARI
I belong to site called Actors' Access. When I submit my photo and resume, I have the opportunity to include a video clip, which Actors Access uploads, not me. I just went to include my video clip for a submission. I wanted to preview it, which I can do via Actors' Access. What I get is a Q with a question mark in it. I pressed open window. Nothing happens. All the other clips open and play, but not this latest clip. Yes, I did call Actors Access, figuring it was something to do with their upload, but it plays fine on their computer. I also went to Firefox, I can play it on Firefox AFTER I got a dialogue box that said activate QT... it's Safari, I'm having this problem with. How can I get this video clip to play on Safari, with Yosemite as my operating system. Is there a way to activate QT, as Firefox asked me to do? Thanks for any help solution. Peter

Apple ID has my old email address. It will not allow me to change the address and will not accept my password or ID questions.   I recently upgraded to OSX Yosemite 10.10.1.  I also have an Apple ID that works with iTunes and would like to keep it as my primary.

To change the iCloud ID on your devices you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted (if using iOS 7), then sign back in with your current ID.
If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, you will have to temporarily recreate it in order to delete the existing account.  To do this, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
