Yosemite: Random crashes after unplug USB devices

my mac book pro started to crash when I unplug some USB devices, after I installed a FTDI driver. I did uninstall the driver to try to fix the issue, no luck.

  • Crash when plug or unplug USB device

I have a Mac Book Pro that I plug into a Raritan KVM switch and use to sync files between the laptop and my desktop machine. I've been doing this for years with no problems, until I installed the Leopard OS. Now either when I plug in the USB connector, or unplug it, the computer will crash about half the time. What I mean by crash is that I get the grey background screen and the message that says,
"You must restart your computer...." What is the deal with this? I'm plugging in a USB device and it
brings down the entire computer. Like I said, this NEVER happened until I got this new OS upgrade.
If I had known how unreliable this OS release was going to be, I never would have put it on the laptop.
I have been an Apple customer ever since 1984 because I just want a computer to work, and not go
through all this stupid crap. I just updated to version 10.5.3 with the hopes that would fix it,
but I guess it's too much to ask these days just to have it work. Is Apple infected with Windows
now that it runs on Intel hardware? I don't know, but my confidence has gone down a lot.

    Hi.
I assume you have exhausted all the Repair Permission and using Single User Mode to 'repair' the disk; and still encounter this problem.
I wouldn't totally blame the OS Upgrade but I also understand that you may not get the finer details of whether the new update is compatible with all the devices etc that we use daily with the computers.
But in your case, it is most likely the new OS is somehow incompatible with the switch. I had one time a USB Bluetooth adapter that everytime I leave it plug-in and when shutdown my mac, kernel panic occurs (that's what you are experiencing)
See if you can isolate and confirm whether this is a new OS compatibility issue, by using another mac with an older OS or something, also check with the switch's manufacturer if there is a newer model or able to do some sort of firmware upgrade?
I know this really doesn't help your immediate problem but think you have to understand this, that whenever they have a newer upgrade or newer OS, or a piece of hardware, some "older parts" have to be chuck, if not, the new OS would be too huge and balloon up, or cause complications - that's my theory anyway; Like with the new macs and new OS, I can no longer run Classic which is still quite vital to some of my daily work, but "no choice" I just have to find some other way to work around it, because without the new hard and software, I also wouldn't be able to enjoy the new and speedier applications like the Adobe CS3 suite.
    Cheers

  • My hp photosmart premium all in one keeps telling me randomly to remove my usb device.

My HP 309 all in one Photo smart Premium Wireless Printer, gives me a remove your usb device reading .None is attached.
I can reboot it and it goes away ; but returns later.I even connected one and removed it but it did not help.
I also can"t get my auto feeder to work.I took it to Best Buy and he didn't know what to do either.

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @mrsddavis ,
I read your post about the troubles you're having with the printer telling you to "remove a USB device", when you do not have a USB device plugged into the unit. I have a couple suggestions that I hope will help you. You may have tried all of the steps to my first idea, if so move on to the second one. Also, the second step will be in a private message to you, as it cannot be posted publicly.  In regards to the ADF not working, let me know what the problem is, for example, will it pull in paper and then jam, or will it not pull paper in at all? Let me know so I can research that problem for you.
If you are not sure how to check your forum messages this post, has instructions.
    Power reset:
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Ensure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help greatly.
Good luck, I hope this helps

  • Trackpad doesn't work for 5 seconds after any USB device is connected

This is really irritating. I could plug in any USB device - a hard drive or iPhone, and the trackpad will not work for about seconds of trying to get the pointer to move around the screen. Normally there's nothing connected to the Mac, so when something is plugged in, even if I just plug something in and walk away from it and come back some time later, if I try to move the trackpad, nothing will happen for about 5 seconds after trying to move the mouse pointer. Very strange.
    Any idea what's going on?

Seems like a strange problem. You could try putting dbus earlier in the list, second after syslog-ng is where I used to have it. Moving to systemd might fix it too.

Why don't you convert all the old 16 bit code into 32 bit code and
create one application where the various parts all know about each
other? I don't think that there's any way to coordinate an old 16 bit
LV and a new 32 bit LV application so that they don't step on each
other driverwise like they appear to be doing. I don't think that the
two LabVIEW's even know that the other exists!
Alternatively, get a second computer to run the 16 bit code on and
make the two apps communicate with
each other using TCP/IP or serial.

  • My Keyboard and Mouse freeze after connecting USB device

In the past few weeks I got this situation where my MacBook Air (13" Late 2010 model) would stop responding to the keyboard and trackpad after I connect a USB device (like an external hard disk, or even my iPhone).
I found one (quite inconvenient) solution: if I connect an external USB mouse and keyboard they work, and after a while the built in trackpad and keyboard start working again. But if I do not have an external mouse and keyboard around me, I am quite stuck and only a reboot fixes the situation.
Any idea what might be causing this, or if there is any solution? It is clearly a software issue, as the hardware can be returned to normal state after reboot.
Note: I have the latest OS - Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50) and regularly update my software.

I have the same issue, on the same model (late 2010 13" MBA).
I haven't been able to figure out a solution either. Strangely, I recently bought a USB external drive and it *never* causes a freeze upon connection. Only smaller devices (iPod, iPad, FitBit, USB stick) cause it. I need to reboot the computer with the device attached to be able to access it.

  • Programs randomly crashing after 10.4.10

Ever since I've updated to 10.4.10, I've experienced random crashes, most noticeably with Safari. I reinstalled 10.4.10 w/ the combo updater, done an archive and install, done an erase and install and still have the same problem. Mail crashes occasionally, but it is usually Safari that crashes. I can't seem to find any pattern to it. It just happens. I've tried going back to sites I was on when it crashed to duplicate the problem, but am unable to. It happens seemingly totally at random. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
I never had this problem w/ 10.4.9 . If I want to go back to .9, should I archive and install then update .9 or do an erase and install and upgrade to .9?
I've been using Macs for over 5 years and never had an update act as goofy as this one.
    Thanks,

  • MacBook Pro: Blank Screen and Random Crashes After Yosemite Update

    Hello All!
So I'm living with the regret of updating my MacBook Pro to Yosemite. My MacBook Pro is an early 2011 version, and ever since I updated it - I literally cannot turn off the computer because when I go to turn it on, the screen is completely black. Performing the flashlight trick, the computer eventually lights up, on average three minutes later. However, that's not the only issues I have been having. My computer constantly loses WiFi signal and is crashing every two hours or so. It's not even that I have a lot of programs running; I literally only have Chrome running... So I'm not sure what I should do now. Is it even because of the Yosemite update?! Help please?!

Nothing obvious here, but better get rid of that remnant of CleanMyMac2. Also check if all software with kernel extensions, launch agents and launch daemons is still necessary and up to date (if not uninstall or update).

  • Pulseaudio random crashes after a three week update

Since yesterdays (three weeks delayed) update I have faced multiple issues, the most buggy update I think I have had on arch ever.
Managed to fix seven of them, but pulseaudio keeps crashing and behaving weirdly. Most of the times, it just stops without any errors at all, but once or twice I got something like this:
    david@dntb:~$ pulseaudio
E: [pulseaudio] bluetooth-util.c: org.bluez.Manager.GetProperties() failed: org.freedesktop.systemd1.LoadFailed: Unit dbus-org.bluez.service failed to load: No such file or directory.
E: [alsa-sink-ALC662 rev1 Analog] alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write!
E: [alsa-sink-ALC662 rev1 Analog] alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
    E: [alsa-sink-ALC662 rev1 Analog] alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail.
Sometimes when I launch pulse, I get sound from only one application, like in the bad olden days... Sometimes it works like nothing has happened. Then I launch flash for example and get audio only from flash or only from everything else than flash. Strange.
I am gonna do some testing with verbosity increased.

I'm having the exact same issues with pulse and it's driving me nuts. Has there been any news on this topic? Pulse just crashes and I can't figure out why. I, too, get the bluez and the snd_hda_intel messages when I look into the logs. But neither of them to be the definite cause. Most of the times the error occurs when I open pavu control, maybe also while playing flash, but not only. Pulse will also not respawn automatically after 5 seconds, although it says it will in pavucontrol.
    Please help

    Hi Everyone,
i have a crash every now and then. Looks like it has something to do with Networking or Bonjour.

anyone got any idea what it could be ? I learned that
there is no more com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist in OS X 10.10. The service that controls mDNSResponder is now discoverd. The plist file you are looking for is actually:
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
You want to add --no-multicast to the ProgramArguments in that file.
      <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/libexec/discoveryd</string> <string>--udsocket</string> <string>standard</string> <string>--loglevel</string> <string>Basic</string> <string>--logclass</string> <string>Everything</string> <string>--logto</string> <string>asl</string> </array>
    Becomes
      <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/libexec/discoveryd</string> <string>--udsocket</string> <string>standard</string> <string>--loglevel</string> <string>Basic</string> <string>--logclass</string> <string>Everything</string> <string>--logto</string> <string>asl</string> <string>--no-multicast</string> </array>
but doing this (adding --no-multicast) disables finding and communicating with printers in my network and my timemachine backup drive can't be found.
..... any clues ? this is driving me mad.

  • Random crashes after installing X-Fi Fatal

    Greetings,
Got a wierd problem that I think may have started after I installed my new souncard (which by the way rocks!) Every now and then my machine just freezes solid, nothing responds, so I have to switch the power off and on. It has happened three times today, once just while browsing, once while watching a movie and once while starting up a game.. So it seems pretty random. I've got the newest drivers from the Creative site.
One thing I haven't done yet, is do a full reformat. Haven't gotten around to that yet, thouht I'd ask here first :P
Oh, here's the rest of my PC specs:
    AMD Athlon FX-60 | ATi Radeon X900XTX | DFI Lanparty UT RDX200 CF-DR | 2GB Kingston HyperX | Hiper Type-R 580W
Maybe someone has had the same problem? Any help is appreciated!
    - SaddlefallMessage Edited by Saddlefall on 08-3-2006 02:30 AM

I think I may have found the problem. I think one of the PCI slots are broken.. When the first crash happened, when I restarted I couldn't find the wireless card in that slot.. so I swapped it. And when I got the soundcard, I put it in that slot. Thats when the crashing started to happen. I've reformatted now, and put the soundcard in another slot. No crashes so far, but it's still early :P Let's hope that's it then..

Hi since I have installed Yosemite. My computer is mysteriously restarting and recovering from a crash. It never happens while I am using the computer but I can come home from work or from being away from home and I find that the computer has restarted and that it gives me recovery info upon restart. Here is the error log that shows up when I restart.
Can anyone look at this and tell me what is going on or what is at the bottom of it.
The computer is iMac 27-inch Mid 2011
    3.1 Ghz Intel Core i5
    20GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
475 GB free storage on main disk.

Do a restore but do not install any apps and test it for a few days. If it keeps happening, take it back to the Apple Store to exchange under warranty and let them know that you've already done a restore and removed all apps and that it keeps happening.
If that fixes it, it's an app...you'll want to add back each app one at a time until it starts happening again to try and isolate which app is causing the crashes.
This is happening to me, too...but I have way too many apps to go through this whole process so I'm just living with it for the time being and will most likely just take it back to the Apple Store for a warranty replacement.
    Good luck!!

  • Random Crashing after PMU resets

    Background Info:
Yesterday my Powerbook crashed. The mouse went out first, and then it froze and the monitor wouldn't show up. [That same day, my brother tried downloading files on his corrupted Nano and I'm suspicious that the courrupted nano - which has crashed twice already - did something to my computer]. So I tried a PMU reset and it worked for a little bit, then it said I needed to restart my computer about an hour later. I wasn't doing anything except resizing a finder window. Then I reset it again and it said I had to reset a few seconds after the computer booted up. I did another PMU reset and the same thing happened.
I'm guessing that I need to repair disk permissions by reading other threads on this forum. If so, how do you do that? (can't seem to find any specific instructions) and is there anything else I should do after I do that?
    Thanks,
    Stacy
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.0.x)   can't tell exact OS X number

Tests such as those are inconclusive unless they say there is a problem.
Mac OS X usually does not have fragmentation problems as it does a lot of its own small file defragmentation. If your hard disk is very full, or you are running a lot of files in swap space, then naturally things will slow down because it it will be harder to access files on the machine.
I think what happened is that your recovery might have attempted to restore cache files for specific applications which are now quitting and bad preferences and that the backup prior to the erase copied over corrupted files as well. If your backup prior to the erase was a full fledged clone, you can sometimes use the Migration Assistant to import the clone if it was on a Firewire hard drive:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
That can often get rid of a lot of the corruption.
Disk Warrior 3.0.3 will also repair the directory much better than Norton will. But I would only run it on a system that is backed up.
Just how full is your hard disk?
